Tripreport - THAI AIRWAYS Short-haul Economy Class Boeing 737 Flight - Koh Samui to Bangkok Airport

- Airline Trip Report. Trip report of our Economy Class flight onboard a Thai Airways Boeing 737-400 Classic!! We are flying from Koh Samui Airport (USM) to Bangkok´s Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK). This flight review begins with us just having arrived at Koh Samui Airport by taxi from Chaweng Beach where we have spent a 3 week holiday.
The footage follows us from the check-in area of the airport where we begin by standing in the wrong check in line. It turns out that the line we were standing in was only for Bangkok Airways flights, and our Thai Airways check-in desk was only opening in one hour after the Firefly flight to Penang was finished checking-in. Finally we checked-in for our flight and our airport tour continues through this airports very unique "terminal" past security control and immigration and to our departure Gate 6! Where then show the viewer the facilities available to Business Class Passengers (Royal Silk) and Economy Class passengers. Like all airports around the world Business Class passengers have a separate lounge available to them with snacks and drinks etc. In Koh Samui the service of free snacks and non-alcoholic drinks are also provided to Economy Class Passengers, but of course not a lounge. After a walk around the departure area we are invited to begin boarding our Thai Airways flight to Bangkok.
We are driven out to the aircraft in some very cute carriages, which make an impression when one is used to be driven to the passenger aircraft by bus for tarmac embarkations. Our waiting aircraft is a Thai Airways Boeing 737-400 also known as a Boeing 737 Classic because of it´s age. The viewer then watches the boarding of this aircraft before we taxi and takeoff from the Chaweng Beach side of the airport flying over the Bangrak Area wand having a nice view of the Wat Plai Laem Temple.
As the flight gets underway we present the viewer with the "Onboard Safety Card" for the Boeing 737-400 we are flying with, the Inflight Magazine "Sawasdee", show the leg room available for Economy Class passengers, the In-flight Meal and refreshment served on this short flight. Before we begin our descent to Suvarnabhumi Airport, we take the viewer to the very back of the aircraft for a view of the Economy Class passenger cabin from there, and we also have a look at the lavatory and galley area of this aircraft before we sit down and begin the approach towards Suvarnabhumi Airport. The viewer get´s to watch the approach and we then land at Suvarnabhumi Airport on Runway 19R. After a longish taxi from the runway to our arrival gate we depart this Boeing 737 Classic and begin making our way to the Air France KLM Sky Lounge, where we will spend some hours waiting for our connection flight to Europe.

The red strap means that the slide in the door is armed, which means if the door is opened, the slide will inflate. This is to warn those opening the doors from the outside, and whenever doors are armed before departure, the strap has to be put across.
Definitely a unique and beautiful airport. Another great video. Liked a lot, especially the fire department information! Also very nice to see your channel grow!

Wow, an airport that looks like a resort. Simply stunning and fits perfectly to such a vacation destination. You just don't want to have any rain when departing or arriving

I have now made it to around 25 minutes and i have a little tight with time so i will watch the rest tomorrow. But so far it's very amazing. Cool that Koh Samui has banana & coconut trees / palms / bushes... The 734 is a oldie but goldie.!

Guess the strap on the R2 door glaze was purposed actually to indicate to the crew members that the door is armed, although different airlines have different company procedures. Did you see the crew tear it off when the aircraft arrived at gate?
Koh Samui Airport is certainly one of the more unique ones I've seen, and quite beatiful at that! While our September trip to Thailand will be to Phuket, definitely want to do Bangkok and Koh Samui, at least, next time!
Koh Samui Airport is very worth a visit if you get the chance! :-D

The Koh Samui airport is charming and picturesque. The interior of the 737 is very colorful and delightfully retro. Glad you and Maro shared your visit to this airport and the flight thereafter. Hope your travels back to Europe is pleasant!

I remember in late 60’s through late 70’s the San Juan Puerto Rico (US Commonwealth) International Airport was also surrounded with beautiful lush vegetation and in the terminal there were large Caribbean blue man made ponds with tropical fish inside!

In September 2018, THAI will scrap the plane you were on in this video, and Samui routes will be suspended. Sad :(

The strap over the door shows if the slide is disarmed or armed. If the strap is over the window the slide is armed if the strap is not over the window the slide is disarmed!

Very nice video Maxi and Maxo. Koh Samui airport is very exotic and outside. I know you and her already been on Bangkok Airways to HKG. I seen there a lot of foreigns on the plane and still summer clothes due to hot outside in Samui airport. There were only two airlines in Samui. Snack looks delicious on short flight and yummy coffee. B737-400 still fly and stay with TG fleet. Your pervious flight to Samui from BKK without window is no fun and no view out there.

Airlines in Samui are normally Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, Firefly, Silk Air and I believe that I (Maxi) saw a Hainan Airlines arrive once! +Traveller The strap over the window means that the door is armed, and the slide will inflate if the door opens. On the Boeing 737, the strap advises the ground staff to don't open the door. On the other aircrafts (like airbus) there's sometimes a light to advise the ground staff.

The strap across the window of the cabin door means that the slide of the door in armed. When it´s disarmed the strap is fixed under or over the window.The airport colleague can see this from outside before open the door.

Oh, I took that flight long time ago...like 20 years ago. Things changed I see.

Interesting that you flew with this flight over 20 years ago, what did you notice has changed. This aircraft is an over 24 Year old Boeing 737-400 Classic so the cabin interior has probably not been changed since then. Thanks for watching and for sharing your own experiences with us. how many crew were on board anyway? service is simple and very attentive crew.
We are not sure how many crew members were onboard but can only say that the Thai Airways cabin crew always give a top notch passenger service! Thai Airways is one of our favorite airlines!

Why do they use their only two 734s on the USM-BKK run ??
As far as we can see from there fleet info online there smallest aircraft are the Boeing 737-400´s of which they appear to have 5 off. Koh Samui is a small airport with a short runway and no larger planes appear able to arrive there. We have plane spotted there over the past 3 years and the biggest commercial aircraft operating there are the Silk Air / Bangkok Air Airbus A319´s. Hence Thai Airways uses the smallest planes they have in their fleet. That´s our theory which we believe is correct ;-)

Fun Fact: The person on the cover of the Sawasdee magazine in this video is our Crown Prince and he is also a qualified TG 737 pilot who flies commercial flights from time to time.

Thai dont fly to samui anymore,we only have bangkok airways who are super exspensive for under a 1hour flight.nice video guys.
No they do not. We think that Thai Smiles does but are not 100% sure. We usually fly into Koh Samui with Bangkok Airways as part of a codeshare with the airline flying us from Europe to Thailand so we do not see/feel the expensive price. +Traveller At 11:42 you think those vehicles are weird you should see what's used for airside transfer at Peshawar airport they either use proper large coaches or mini buses to take passengers from the terminal to the aircraft I do not know why.

Thai Airways should've replaced their 737-400 with the 737 MAX instead of retiring the type completely
Considering the current situation with the MAX, perhaps it is lucky that they did not. Thanks for watching our video and for taking the time to share your opinion.
And even if the 737 MAX issues didn't happen, Thai Airways probably still wouldn't have ordered it since they had been suffering financial losses for years and they even had planned to scrap fleet renewal plans, postpone upcoming routes that were way too ambitious (like launching new US flights such as Bangkok to Seattle/San Francisco) in order to cut costs even if the FAA upgraded Thailand to Category 1.
