  • In December 1972, a chartered aircraft carrying a Uruguayan rugby team was found 72 days after it crashed in the Andes. Incredibly, there were 16 survivors, who managed to stay alive by eating from the bodies of their dead team-mates. This is the incredible story of "The Miracle in the Andes".

    It is inexplainable how Nando and Canessa spent 10 days in below zero temperatures, sometimes in snow up to their waists, climbing up and down rocky cliffs - and while wearing only layered sweaters and trousers with their leather rugby boots and socks for mittens. They had a 'sleeping bag' sewn from insulation ripped from the plane, but it barely kept them warm in temps of 30 below zero at night. The odds were absolutely stacked against them. I'll never fully understand how they made that trek.

      Robert Slydell I'm neither. These guys have cashed in on this story through books, movies , speaking engagements etc etc in which complete suckers pay to go and listen to. How many years later and they're still babbling on and on with their BS. It's indeed ' vile' people who endlessly take advantage of a tragedy.
      And are you saying they weren't cannibals? That's precisely what they were no matter the circumstances.

    • @robertslydell6990
      @robertslydell6990 6 ปีที่แล้ว +108

      It's the latter. Canessa is a heart surgeon, Parrado took over the family business and is a successful businessman in his own right. They "babble" because they are asked about it to this day, it's a great survival story that inspires people. Fuck off.

      Nando Parrado wrote a book called Miracle in the Andes. In the epilogue he mentions that many experts believed they would need lifelong long counselling to deal with issues they were sure would come up. According to Nando, they pretty well came through it with minimal problems. They all lived successful lives and stay in touch helping each other. A lot of it had to do with their religious beliefs.

    • @valeriaardanaz4180
      @valeriaardanaz4180 4 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @@rockedred There is another way of paraphrasing. And focusing the whole story ONLY on that, is extremely disrespectful. The story is not that they had to eat their friends and family. The story is that they survived 72 days in the most inhospitable place on earth. That they had to rescue themselves because society had abandoned them. The story is that they had to walk across the andes with no mountain training nor equipment whatsoever. The human flesh eating was just a consequence of all that and another anecdote to the whole story.
      If you knew anything about them, you'd know that they dislike the fact that people only focus on that. There is so much more to it. So yes. They had to do cannibalism. No one is denying that. But It doesn't make it any less disrespectful to use that title and focus the attention only on that.

    Antonio 'Tintín' Vizintín was sent back to the fuselage when the expeditionaries (himself included) realised that the distance they had to walk was longer than they expected, and therefore, the 'food' they were carrying wouldn't be enough for the three of them.
    'Tintín' says that, at the time, he didn't know his backpack was much heavier than Canessa's and Parrado's. It wasn't until many years later that he found out he'd climbed the highest mountain for three days carrying 40 kilos (88 pounds) of 'food' and water.

    Does anybody know the song played close to the end, and at the very end (min 14:10)?
    On the other hand, saw the movie and the book Alive!, the book is impressive. It may help to understand those who wonder about the smiling photos :)
    (I find the word "Cannibalism" in the tittle a bit out of place, I have to say)

    • @Adifgreat
      @Adifgreat ปีที่แล้ว

      The book 'Alive' is. The survivors say the movie is not true to the book, and find it disrespectful because a lot of facts were changed or made up, and quite a few important characters were left out of the story, in order to give Ethan Hawke's character the role of the superhero. Actually, what took those kids out of the mountains was teamwork at its best, and that's not portrayed in the film.

    10:13 "managed to get a transistaor radio from the cockpit"
    This is simply false. The transistor radio was inside of a luggage. The Radio from the cockpit wasnt working and they tried everything to get it to work. They took the radio from the coclpit to the tail of the plane, which was several miles away. Roy Harvey tried to repair it, but didnt succeed.

      Nah. I don't see what's miraculous about a ton of deaths and having to eat your friends. They weren't saved by any miracles, they had to drag themselves to find help and almost died doing so.

    • @Seek1878
      @Seek1878 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@solann_ Not a "miracle." Its all about how the plane crashed and it boils down to luck. Snow, the angle, etc, are all factors. Sure wasn't a "miracle" for those who died painfully and slowly, like the woman who's legs were crushed and it took her days to die.

    Why dont they come to the point? I dont care about their rugby stories. But it would be interesting to know how they consumed the corpses. Could they create fire to crisp the meat? If yes, how? Or did they consume the corpses raw? I mean those are some essential surviving tips...
