What Nando and Roberto did must be one of the greatest feats in modern day history. To walk for 10 days without any real equipment, climbing a mountain 4000+ meter high in freezing cold weather and barely without any food. And with everything that happened leading up to it. The fact that they were malnurized and that Nando had been in a coma. That they were hit by an avalanche that killed 8 people. Man. I’m lost for words. From now on I promise myself that I won’t live my life like it’s granted.

THIS man.. 🙌🏻. This HERO, who, with Roberto walked for miles over the sometimes vertical Andes mountains, wearing only rugby boots and summer clothes, with no equipment apart from poles and crude sunglasses made with materials salvaged from the plane crash. He walked for miles, with bulky foam seat cushions strapped to his feet to stop him sinking in the snow. Try walking like that round a room, let alone up a mountain. He walked, with parts of his friends in his pockets which he then had to eat. He walked, having survived a plane crash, head injury, three day coma, starvation, dehydration, injury, sub zero temperatures, emotional loss of his mother, sister and friends....having to make the unthinkable choice to use the only protein on the mountain....those same friends. He walks over mountains, then voluntarily steps back on a helicopter - TWICE - to go back and rescue the other survivors, on helicopters buffeted so much by the wind, that the young copilot pilot was crying in terror and the passengers were shouting the rosary. Can you imagine, after one plane crash already. Nando Parrado. Inspiration, brave Hero....a living legend. Saved for a reason.
Agree 100%! The other 14 survivors themselves tell the world that although they don't consider themselves heroes, they do consider Nando and Roberto actual heroes. That hike/trek was an gigantic act of courage and determination!

Nando was by his side, and Álvaro Mangino rode behind them. When the helicopter began to shake like it was being beaten, he asked Nando if the trip had been like this on the way over, if the helicopter was supposed to seem like it was falling apart with that horrible sound of screeching metal. However much power they gave the motor they never managed to stabilise it or to arrive at the summit they wanted to fly over. Nando responded to him that, yes, he should remain calm, that it had been the same before. Daniel looked again at the co-pilot and saw that he was crying now. He looked again at Nando and found his expression to be sombre. How ironic, Daniel thought, that seventy-one days of suffering should be brought to an end in this way. Dying on another aircraft.
Fernando Parrado is a legend. The man suffered a broken skull on impact and was in coma for 3 days. He also lost his mother in the crash and then watched his sister dies some days later. He then survived the whole ordeal and volunteered himself to go ask for help after hiking with Canessa for 10 days. He deserves a damn statue in Uruguay.
After all he went true losing a mother and sister in a terrible way this man can manage to go on a stage and talk about it in front of many people. This is just unbelievable. This guy is a legend.

I have listened to Nando, in his native language, Spanish. And I must conclude, that in English, he is more intense and fluid. In Spanish, he is more leisurely and calm. On both occasions, he is always sincere, motivating and humble with his heroism. He is truly a special human being.
In Spanish he moves you into tears, he shows his soul completely as the huge human being he is…love him and the rest of partners in that incredible adventure and challenge, they all are an example of courage and partnership
I was in 5th grade when this happened. The story has captivated me for decades. 15 years ago I was doing a winter solo mountaineering expedition in Alaska, where I live. Triggered avalanche, which somehow I managed to survive. Found myself in a life-death survival story, nowhere near similar to what these men endured but it put me to the ultimate test and I made it out alive, self rescue, on my own wits. Search teams couldn't find me. Had i stayed put waiting to be found I would have died there. What he says is so true: we don't know what our strengths will be until faced with such a situation. And to live your own best life NOW, not wait. And be grateful.
The Andes disaster was a fascinating psychological example of what armies have known for centuries... when a pre-formed group is suddenly exposed to terrible danger, the guys who "rise to the occasion" and become leaders are RARELY the ones you expect. Neither Parrado nor Canessa were captains of the rugby team, nor did anybody think of them as leaders before the crash: Parrado, as he says, was a gawky rich kid with glasses and Canessa was such a peevish know-it-all they called him "Muscles". But those were the two men who said "If I go, I'll probably die anyway, but if I don't go, then we will all die here." Without them standing up, nobody would have gone anywhere.

I cried so much when i saw the movie, as I read all the documentary. Believe it or not inspired me to stay strong as a single parent with 3 young kids at a very young age of 21. If this man survived I will survived too. IF THERE IS A WILL THERE IS A WAY. Even I suffered Lupus for almost 24 years due to over fatique without maintenance for almost 18 years now.I retired with peace of mine.I always think of those who survived for 72 days. Mr.Nando Parrado and the 15 survivor I sincerely thanks all of you because it inspired me. My mom and I have strong unity that our family will survived . Your an Ideal person.

As a 41 year old man from a tiny town in South Carolina I can say without a doubt this man has been a hero of mine since I was a young boy and my mom read me his story. I read the book Alive and was immediately inspired by Nando and Roberto, and the whole team and their incredible story of survival . Nando, I heard you say you were an average person (implying you were not a leader prior the crash). YOU WERE a leader and had never been presented with something so challenging and horrific. I remember the very day in October 1972 when I heard the news getting ready that morning for school over our radio in our bathroom. Your courage has been my inspiration many times. 😌

I was 14 years old when this accident happened. I do remember hearing about it in school. We actually talked about the incident after these young men were rescued. There was a big Newspaper article about it in my local paper back then and I read the entire half page they printed on it. I was shocked and in disbelief about it but there it was in black and white. I was very moved by their story and had some trouble with it due to my being very young at the time and ended up speaking to one of my English teachers about it. She explained a great many things to me that day one of which was perseverance. That conversation has always stuck with me over the years along with these young men's experiences and both have help sustain me in my life and for that I will forever be grateful. May God bless all who died that day and in the days that followed and also for all who survived.

@ Es cierto, pero 21 meses en temperaturas que pueden llegar a más de 80° bajo cero, vivir casi dos meses en una banquisa a la deriva y cruzar 1.300 km en esos mares en un bote de 6 mts, me parece que supera por lejos las condiciones terribles de estos valientes uruguayos y ningún experto está preparado para semejante exigencia. En mi opinión son proezas incomparables desde cualquier punto de vista.

Nando and Roberto are extremely amazing. He did not let his friends keep suffering in the cold and die of starvation in those mountains. He and Roberto are the greatest heros that I have ever heard of. They are true champions. Any future after the future from that plane to freedom would be easy. I hope all stays well with Nando and his family forever.
QuixoticQuaver The book is fantastic but the epilogue is my personal favorite part of the book and you can check out parts of it online by going to amazon and clicking on the "look inside" feature. Your probably aware of how Roberto Canessa became a pediatric cardiologist. I was amazed to read how he personally bought a used piece of equipment from a New York hospital and how he went up there to bring it back home. Something that was bulky enough to require the use of a handcart, he wheeled it down to the sidewalk and after awhile flagged somebody in a truck to take him to the airport. Then there was the red-tape he had to deal with once he got home that eventually got the president of the country involved. Lots of great stuff about all the survivors and then the part about why after years of turning down opportunities to have his story told, he changed his mind. Some of the most inspirational stuff I've ever read.

Tenía 16 años cuando ocurrió la tragedia y hoy 26/10/2022 hace 50 años que sucedió el accidente y acabo de escuchar a Nando Parrado y siempre rescato algo desde que supe que estaban vivos (aunque yo presentía que estaban vivos, crease o no), he seguido su historia y la seguiré escuchando hasta el fin, no me aburre, todo lo contrario cada día aprendo más. Leí tres libros sobre ellos y el que más me gustó fue la Sociedad de la Nieve, increíble. además he escuchado a alguno de ellos en sus conferencias, su superación por todo lo que pasó es extraordinaria. Hasta les escribí en la página viven en el 2010 para contarles lo que yo había sentido y estaba en ese momento con una gran depresión y tuve la bendición que me contestaran Javier Methol y Coche Inciarte. Gracias a Nando por este video ya que venía medio bajón con todo lo que pasa y me diste fuerzas a pesar de todo.

There in the remote Andes, Nando proved himself to be a self-made man. Despite harsh conditions and loss of his two closest women, he never gave up. After the crash he and his late sister became the example of model siblings. When the men died one by one, Nando stayed tough inside and out. Everyone of us has his personal Andes. And either you defeat them, or they will defeat you. And to defeat them, you have to take a leaf out of the book of Nando.

Yo tenía 23 años cuando ocurrió esta tragedia. Cada vez que escucho a Nando Parrado es un momento de reflexión, una historia real de supervivencia y una organización de equipo admirable de valor y amor por la vida, para sobrevivir 72 días en los andes. Siempre miro y escucho esta historia varias veces como un recordatorio, un ayuda memoria de estar a 4000 metros de altura en el medio de la nada, sin agua ni comida y como sobrevivieron este grupo de muchachos, aún hoy a casi 49 años de este suceso me pone la piel de gallina por la prueba que pasaron. Mis respeto y admiración por el valor para superar esta prueba de vida y de salir a buscar ayuda de Nando y Roberto Canessa!!!! Siempre los recuerdo. La noticia que había sobrevivientes fue un milagro de Navidad.

I think the most touching part from this was when his daughters asked him to take them to the andes mountains where the plane crashed and where their father lived for 2 and a half months, and how they were born there cause had he not done what he did to survive they wouldnt be here.

I remember when this happened and was all over the news. I have recently started reading and watching everything I can about this tragedy and find it more interesting than when it originally happened. As a young child, it didn't hit me like it hits me today. The sheer determination it took to get off that mountain was larger than life itself. I've always wondered, that if I were in that plane, would I have had what it took to survive? Would I have volunteered to make the journey with Mr. Parrado? I don't know the answer to that question and I would only know if something like this were to happen to me and I pray it never does. I would love to meet this man and shake his hand, as I believe he is a hero in the truest sense of the word.

THIS man.. 🙌🏻. This HERO, who, with Roberto walked for miles over the sometimes vertical Andes mountains, wearing only rugby boots and summer clothes, with no equipment apart from poles and crude sunglasses made with materials salvaged from the plane crash. He walked for miles, with bulky foam seat cushions strapped to his feet to stop him sinking in the snow. Try walking like that round a room, let alone up a mountain. He walked, with parts of his friends in his pockets which he then had to eat. He walked, having survived a plane crash, head injury, three day coma, starvation, dehydration, injury, sub zero temperatures, emotional loss of his mother, sister and friends....having to make the unthinkable choice to use the only protein on the mountain....those same friends. He walks over mountains, then voluntarily steps back on a helicopter - TWICE - to go back and rescue the other survivors, on helicopters buffeted so much by the wind, that the young copilot pilot was crying in terror and the passengers were shouting the rosary. Can you imagine, after one plane crash already. Nando Parrado. Inspiration, brave Hero....a living legend. Saved for a reason.

This is the text, translated by the publisher from Spanish. “ In the rescue helicopter Daniel was seated behind the pilot and could only see the back of his head, but he could see the profile of the co-pilot, a man too young for what he had to face. Nando was by his side, and Álvaro Mangino rode behind them. When the helicopter began to shake like it was being beaten, he asked Nando if the trip had been like this on the way over, if the helicopter was supposed to seem like it was falling apart with that horrible sound of screeching metal. However much power they gave the motor they never managed to stabilise it or to arrive at the summit they wanted to fly over. Nando responded to him that, yes, he should remain calm, that it had been the same before. Daniel looked again at the co-pilot and saw that he was crying now. He looked again at Nando and found his expression to be sombre. How ironic, Daniel thought, that seventy-one days of suffering should be brought to an end in this way. Dying on another aircraft.

Fernando Parrado is a legend. The man suffered a broken skull on impact and was in coma for 3 days. He also lost his mother in the crash and then watched his sister dies some days later. He then survived the whole ordeal and volunteered himself to go ask for help after hiking with Canessa for 10 days. He deserves a damn statue in Uruguay.
After all he went true losing a mother and sister in a terrible way this man can manage to go on a stage and talk about it in front of many people. This is just unbelievable. This guy is a legend.
I love Roberto's response when Nando noticed that he was wearing the belt of his dead best friend Ponchito. "Your best friend is gone Nando, I'm your best friend now"
I have listened to Nando, in his native language, Spanish. And I must conclude, that in English, he is more intense and fluid. In Spanish, he is more leisurely and calm. On both occasions, he is always sincere, motivating and humble with his heroism. He is truly a special human being.
In Spanish he moves you into tears, he shows his soul completely as the huge human being he is…love him and the rest of partners in that incredible adventure and challenge, they all are an example of courage and partnership

I was in 5th grade when this happened. The story has captivated me for decades. 15 years ago I was doing a winter solo mountaineering expedition in Alaska, where I live. Triggered avalanche, which somehow I managed to survive. Found myself in a life-death survival story, nowhere near similar to what these men endured but it put me to the ultimate test and I made it out alive, self rescue, on my own wits. Search teams couldn't find me. Had i stayed put waiting to be found I would have died there. What he says is so true: we don't know what our strengths will be until faced with such a situation. And to live your own best life NOW, not wait. And be grateful.

The Andes disaster was a fascinating psychological example of what armies have known for centuries... when a pre-formed group is suddenly exposed to terrible danger, the guys who "rise to the occasion" and become leaders are RARELY the ones you expect. Neither Parrado nor Canessa were captains of the rugby team, nor did anybody think of them as leaders before the crash: Parrado, as he says, was a gawky rich kid with glasses and Canessa was such a peevish know-it-all they called him "Muscles".
But those were the two men who said "If I go, I'll probably die anyway, but if I don't go, then we will all die here." Without them standing up, nobody would have gone anywhere.
Actually, Marcelo Pérez, the captain of the team, did become the leader immediately after the crash, but sadly he died during the avalanche.

I cried so much when i saw the movie, as I read all the documentary. Believe it or not inspired me to stay strong as a single parent with 3 young kids at a very young age of 21. If this man survived I will survived too. IF THERE IS A WILL THERE IS A WAY. Even I suffered Lupus for almost 24 years due to over fatique without maintenance for almost 18 years now.I retired with peace of mine.I always think of those who survived for 72 days. Mr.Nando Parrado and the 15 survivor I sincerely thanks all of you because it inspired me. My mom and I have strong unity that our family will survived . Your an Ideal person.

As a 41 year old man from a tiny town in South Carolina I can say without a doubt this man has been a hero of mine since I was a young boy and my mom read me his story. I am 60 yrs old from Argentina. This is the first time I put my attention on this documental I find inspirational to keep on pushing thru difficulties.
This guy has the biggest balls ever, just incredible. He had such a strong mindset and will power to save himself and everybody, despite losing his mother and sister. He is the badass everyone wants to be, this guy is just wow. Along with Roberto and the rest of the team, just insane.

Nando, I heard you say you were an average person (implying you were not a leader prior the crash). YOU WERE a leader and had never been presented with something so challenging and horrific. I remember the very day in October 1972 when I heard the news getting ready that morning for school over our radio in our bathroom.

I was 14 years old when this accident happened. I do remember hearing about it in school. We actually talked about the incident after these young men were rescued. There was a big Newspaper article about it in my local paper back then and I read the entire half page they printed on it. I was shocked and in disbelief about it but there it was in black and white. I was very moved by their story and had some trouble with it due to my being very young at the time and ended up speaking to one of my English teachers about it. She explained a great many things to me that day one of which was perseverance. That conversation has always stuck with me over the years along with these young men's experiences and both have help sustain me in my life and for that I will forever be grateful. May God bless all who died that day and in the days that followed and also for all who survived.

@ Es cierto, pero 21 meses en temperaturas que pueden llegar a más de 80° bajo cero, vivir casi dos meses en una banquisa a la deriva y cruzar 1.300 km en esos mares en un bote de 6 mts, me parece que supera por lejos las condiciones terribles de estos valientes uruguayos y ningún experto está preparado para semejante exigencia. En mi opinión son proezas incomparables desde cualquier punto de vista.

Hi Nando, I attended the Lake Tahoe event and is was amazing. I read, Alive, in 7th grade and now, as a teacher, I have the opportunity to create a reading curriculum around, Miracle in the Andes. We're reading an excerpt from your memoir and watching the documentary, I Am Alive. My 7-10th graders are loving it and can't wait to get their own copy! We just finished watching this TED Talk too! I grew up listening to this incredible story told by my father. certainly had a great influence on my life, both in my personal and professional life. the dissemination of this fantastic story is essential for people to have a real perspective on human resilience and to be able to take this example into their personal lives.

Nando and Roberto are extremely amazing. He did not let his friends keep suffering in the cold and die of starvation in those mountains. He and Roberto are the greatest heros that I have ever heard of. They are true champions. Any future after the future from that plane to freedom would be easy. QuixoticQuaver The book is fantastic but the epilogue is my personal favorite part of the book and you can check out parts of it online by going to amazon and clicking on the "look inside" feature. Your probably aware of how Roberto Canessa became a pediatric cardiologist. I was amazed to read how he personally bought a used piece of equipment from a New York hospital and how he went up there to bring it back home. Something that was bulky enough to require the use of a handcart, he wheeled it down to the sidewalk and after awhile flagged somebody in a truck to take him to the airport. Then there was the red-tape he had to deal with once he got home that eventually got the president of the country involved.
Lots of great stuff about all the survivors and then the part about why after years of turning down opportunities to have his story told, he changed his mind. Some of the most inspirational stuff I've ever read.

Tenía 16 años cuando ocurrió la tragedia y hoy 26/10/2022 hace 50 años que sucedió el accidente y acabo de escuchar a Nando Parrado y siempre rescato algo desde que supe que estaban vivos (aunque yo presentía que estaban vivos, crease o no), he seguido su historia y la seguiré escuchando hasta el fin, no me aburre, todo lo contrario cada día aprendo más. Leí tres libros sobre ellos y el que más me gustó fue la Sociedad de la Nieve, increíble. además he escuchado a alguno de ellos en sus conferencias, su superación por todo lo que pasó es extraordinaria. Hasta les escribí en la página viven en el 2010 para contarles lo que yo había sentido y estaba en ese momento con una gran depresión y tuve la bendición que me contestaran Javier Methol y Coche Inciarte. Gracias a Nando por este video ya que venía medio bajón con todo lo que pasa y me diste fuerzas a pesar de todo.

There in the remote Andes, Nando proved himself to be a self-made man. Despite harsh conditions and loss of his two closest women, he never gave up. After the crash he and his late sister became the example of model siblings. When the men died one by one, Nando stayed tough inside and out.
Everyone of us has his personal Andes. And either you defeat them, or they will defeat you. And to defeat them, you have to take a leaf out of the book of Nando.

Yo tenía 23 años cuando ocurrió esta tragedia. Cada vez que escucho a Nando Parrado es un momento de reflexión, una historia real de supervivencia y una organización de equipo admirable de valor y amor por la vida, para sobrevivir 72 días en los andes. Siempre miro y escucho esta historia varias veces como un recordatorio, un ayuda memoria de estar a 4000 metros de altura en el medio de la nada, sin agua ni comida y como sobrevivieron este grupo de muchachos, aún hoy a casi 49 años de este suceso me pone la piel de gallina por la prueba que pasaron. Mis respeto y admiración por el valor para superar esta prueba de vida y de salir a buscar ayuda de Nando y Roberto Canessa!!!! Siempre los recuerdo. La noticia que había sobrevivientes fue un milagro de Navidad.

No hay que glorificar a nadie, ni usufructuar de una tragedia con victimas que nunca regresaron a sus familias, It was God's will, not mans will to survive and live a life..

I think the most touching part from this was when his daughters asked him to take them to the andes mountains where the plane crashed and where their father lived for 2 and a half months, and how they were born there cause had he not done what he did to survive they wouldnt be here.
God bless him and his family. He has gone through a lot. It's so heart breaking to be stuck in the middle of nowhere. Life is full of unexpected things.

I remember when this happened and was all over the news. I have recently started reading and watching everything I can about this tragedy and find it more interesting than when it originally happened. As a young child, it didn't hit me like it hits me today. The sheer determination it took to get off that mountain was larger than life itself. I've always wondered, that if I were in that plane, would I have had what it took to survive? Would I have volunteered to make the journey with Mr. Parrado? I don't know the answer to that question and I would only know if something like this were to happen to me and I pray it never does. I would love to meet this man and shake his hand, as I believe he is a hero in the truest sense of the word.

La fe mueve montañas;este es un claro ejemplo cuando sucedió yo era una adolecente.Lo escuchamos por radio y sentimos una gran alegría.Tambien asiste a una conferencia de ellos.En Uruguay somos muy pocos.Pero en algo siempre nos destacamos.El libro Viven es muy fuerte cuando lo leí,no paras de emocionarte a cada instante.Y relata muy bien toda la tragedia.
