There's no reason the flakes should remain "mysterious" Have several parties take samples and get them tested at several independent labs. The media itself could do this.

Cant drink the water. Cant use the streams and brooks. Cant raise chickens and eggs (they eat off the ground), cant have a vegetable garden. This whole region is now a superfund site. I check zillow and see people listing their homes trying to flee. They will never sell. Norfolk southern should have to buy every house in town at fair market value for any wishing to leave.
Blame the railroad companies not the government
Don't worry, you're next.
All the people affected by the train derailment need to file a civil lawsuit against the company.
I lived 2 blocks from an Edison electric plant & they would blow their stacks in the middle of the night sending bright yellow flakes all over everything, they used to collect on my car. That plant got shut down & doesn't exist anymore due to toxic waste. Regulations are for people, not the corporations bottom line, sad that people think that they kill jobs because this company did just fine according to Wall Street.
How bout the government? This is bigger than people who own train companies… how bout Rothschild and builderburg….. do not be deceived.. this was intentional… just go look at the Simpsons movie… next stop comes the dome.
Individual law suits too...
The ash appears to be a composite leftover of the vinyl-chloride burn, which likely changed from chemical form to a kind of plastic ash after heating. Probably not a good thing to have in your yard, especially if growing a garden. Hopefully no one signs a hold-harmless agreement from either Norfolk Southern or any federal agency. Time will tell how severe the consequences will be.
If it was any form of plastic, than rain would not dissolve it. You people have no knowledge.

Since the day of the derailment everything is poisoned. Water, land, crops, animals
Outdoor gardens will definitely have issues.
People are gonna need Potted plants.
It doesn't take much to grow something indoors though, just 30 bucks and a trip to the dollar store.
20 bucks for a fan.
5 bucks for a couple extra regular house light bulbs
And 1-2 bucks for a spray bottle.
Sure you can get super complicated with grow tents, special lights and air filters but most of that's unnecessary for a couple small plants.
And for people who are really struggling, you can buy seeds and (edible) plants with an ebt card from Amazon and Walmart.
Phosgene has no antidote and very persistent. Improper combustion with inadequate oxidizer( burning in a ditch) instead of special incinerator.

@@TREEHUGGAH1 greenhouses can be surprisingly cheap as well if you're resourceful and have an hour.
All it takes is an old trampoline frame separated in the middle, giving you the 2 half circles for a greenhouse. Dig the ends into the ground and grab a tarp or even a roll of window plastic. (Honestly a decent sized tent may work as well though)
There's Lots of vids out there of trampoline frame greenhouses being set up in different ways with almost no money.

I have lived near rail lines my entire life. This makes me want to take proximity to rail lines into consideration when I move to another place. Being within earshot of one may not be a good idea if rail companies are not forced to improve safety standards when transporting hazardous and flammable materials.
Me too and I think every railway car should be marked with what it contains.
Every chemical filled rail car is a potential weapon in this time period.

This is the smartest comment on here. Everyone else is like "There was a fire and I can't figure out why there's ash." People actually are getting stupider. Now that I think of it, that stupidity is probably due to toxic chemicals. It's ripe for another conspiracy theory.
The soil and water is about as safe as a Fukushima fish market.
We had similar ash from the Northern California fires… we use air quality apps, wear n65s and use HEPA air filter. This reminds me of what we have been exposed to here. What is happening to our beautiful country? Why aren’t we safe anymore?
For me personally, I think we’re relying on old infrastructure to support 2x, 5x, even 10x the amount of people it was meant to support. The population grows and grows, but no new infrastructure. To put it simply, the old crap is falling apart. Jobs would explode if we finally took initiative and built new roads, railways, etc. quality of life would go up. Less accidents.

I wouldn't trust the EPA for those tests. Get an independent test.
If it is hazardous, why would you pick it up with your bare hands?
,🙄
because its ash from burning cardboard box's.
I'd set up big yard bags & leaf blow the ashes into them. May not get them all, but alot of them.
Jerry, I worked with Union Carbide for 27 years before retiring. We manufactured plastic trash bags and food storage. Polyethylene was one of the major components of the trash bags. There were very large rolls and boxes of the pellets and every area of the plant. When this plastic burned it left a black ash literally drifting in the air like small balloons and eventually dropped to the ground. There's no doubt in my mind that this would be toxic in some way and if these were to enter your eyes or lungs it would make a heavy burning sensation. In my opinion I would avoid turning these in your soil for your garden
One thing also to add to my comments, if you look closely on some of the buildings plants or cars you might find some of the ash stuck to the surface of the item. Right after the plastic has been burned it will drift and be in a sticky form
There was a train car labeled "powder, flakes" on the epa list. They didn't say what it was.
Doesnt that sound to you like CYA release???

Getting the ash out of his yard will be an ongoing task because wherever the wind blows, so flies the ash and it’s obviously all around his property, in other yards, woods, etc. It should be tested to determine the composition. Anyone who thinks this catastrophe stayed localized right over the burning rail cars is delusional. The environment will be affected as well for many years to come.
How does this affect vinyl siding prices ?
I want to put it on my home ...so mold can start growing on the back side , be super flamable too
