Edelgard cherished her time at the monastery, she loved her teacher (in Black Eagles routes), she wanted nothing else but to stay in those moments. But she knows it cannot last, her goals for the future she knows will make her enemies with those she considered friends. She wished she could stay. She talks about how she beautiful the monastery was, how she fears the end of the peaceful days. She talks about how she can be herself, free from her past and her future. But also how she is hiding her true goals, the mask of happiness she wears to hide the pain she will cause. Her heart scorched by the horrors of her past, and those responsible still controlling her actions now. She sees her teacher as an escape, someone who will help her forget the darkness, and someone she wishes to stay with, something to guard against the cold of her past. She chases Byleths shadow, hoping to speak of her truth. But finds she cannot bring herself to say anything out of fear of rejection. Making promises with her fellow classmates, despite knowing she will break them. She tries desperately to reveal herself, but her efforts are so subtle they come to nothing. She speaks of her affection toward Byleth, how her feelings make her conflicted wanting to both embrace them but knowing her path prevents them from coming to fruition. But she will accept them even if it's only temporary. They are as snow (Silver Snow route) The Blue Moonlight, (the Azure Moon route). As the wind calms my thoughts, (Verdant Wind route) "Open the door and walk away, never give in to the call of yesterday". Edelgard accepts her future, her role. She remembers the happy days but accepts that it is in the past, she moves forward no matter the cost.
I would listen to it again, and consider that the following characters are: The Sun - Byleth (playable character) who’s teaching is seen as the suns rays and approval for siding with them Crimson Flower / Rose - Edelgard a flower that only blooms in war and withers in every route the sun does not side with her. She’s afraid of losing the sun. The song is mostly about Edlegard choices and feelings, future outcomes, and Byleth’s alternate decisions. The Moon - Dimitri the full moon reflects the sun’s light. And Dimitri certainly went through phases. The wind - Claud. Usually directionless and lacking power, it is given direction and power by the sun. The cold/snow - Rhea stuck in time after losing her mother, representing an unchanging uncaring stagnation. Something that stands in Edlegard’s way of blooming. Rhea can also be seen as an Edlegard at the end of their path, that has gone completely numb and cold due to their loses. There is a surprising depth in this song. Also I recommend Heritors of Arcadia from fire emblem echoes.
I played the Black Eagles Route first and i have to say... the Song hits different. When you dive into Edelgards backgrond and recognize what she has been through, then this musical masterpiece strikes right through the heart.
Byleth: The Sun. The professor, who provides crucial support to whichever lord he or she ends up siding with. Edelgard: The Flower. She withers and doesn't see her goals to the end in any route that isn't hers without the sun's support. The song also hints that she enjoyed her time at Garreg Mach, and that she does truly love the memories she made there. Dimitri: The Moon. It reflects the sun's bright light, which also reflects his various changes throughout his route but also symbolizes his hidden darkness. Claude: The Wind. The wind doesn't necessarily need the sun, but is formed and is thus boosted by its presence. This is seen in-game as even if Byleth doesn't side with him, he can still succeed and see his goals through, but he achieves the most with Byleth by his side. Rhea: The Snow. Not only is her cold exterior melted by Byleth, the snow can also represent Byleth being left all alone in the snow, with none of the lords with him or her.
Genuinely in love with this song. It just gets me with the "I fear the edge of dawn, knowing time betrays" Edelgard is terrified of each breaking dawn, because she knows each passing day just puts her that much closer to the end of her personal peace, as well as her own shortened lifespan. A sad girl's pleas live only for a breath, and then they fade against the blazing flames, the same force that scorched her heart black and stands in the way of her one moment in time in which she can just be herself, not the Flame Emperor, or the heiress of Adrestia, or anything other than a simple young woman
Three Houses was my Pandemic game, and caused me to become a long time Fire Emblem fan (I dont think I'll be tired of this series any time soon). I think a big part of why I resonated so much with this game was because I could understand the plight the students in the officers academy. Sure, I wasn't thrust into a war months before my graduation but I was a college senior in 2020. When worries about graduation should have been at the center of my mind, the world shifted and suddenly the wellbeing of myself and everyone around me mattered more. Losing and the fear of losing loved ones became a big part of the twenties which I had just entered. I've grown *a lot* since I've played Three Houses but it's always going to be a piece of media that made a huge impact on my life. I think I full on cried when I first listened to Seasons of Warfare (and Edge of Dawn the credits version) in full.
I love this song, especially since it's a window into a particular someone's inner thoughts. I wish I could gush, but I know I'll cross into spoiler stuff on routes you hadn't yet played.
I mean, the song is only fitting for routes that aren’t Crimson Flower, and he played Blue Lions, so I think it’s good context to give him. I mean, the song canonically makes the most sense for Silver Snow, since Byleth was still at Edelgard’s side for the first half of the game
Lady of Hresvelg was the main reason why I played the Black Eagles route first, listening to it in the opening cinematic got me intrigued since it was definitely about Edelgard. Immediately after starting and getting to where I needed to choose a route to play on I was stuck between Blue Lions for Dimitri and Black Eagles for Edelgard, though ultimately chose the Black Eagles route. And I must say I was very satisfied with the playthrough, in the Black Eagle route there are two different paths you can take which makes it a bit different from the other routes once you select them you are on a set path until the end. But on Black Eagles you can miss one of the endings its capable of having even though yes it feels like it was cut short since you don't go to Shambhala like the other routes do, at least in Three Hopes it gets a bit more fleshed out albeit in a slightly altered story line. Also got to say Marco I hope that maybe you can look at music for the game that came after Three Houses. The music from Three Hopes is phenomenal but that's because its a bit more action oriented compared to Three Houses so the music is in a faster tempo, but its still pretty good.
This song really resonates with Edelgard's sorrow and experiences. Sometimes when I reflect on her story, this song really brings out her sadness and longing.
Something I just noticed is that in the song, in certain parts of the background it has the techno music when encountering the Agarthans or their pillars of light, possibly representing TWSITD's presence in her thoughts..
That's really interesting. I always noticed the electronic music, and I recognized it from that one battle theme within the agarthans' lair, but I never really thought much about it. It definitely sounds like something almost directly taken from it though
5:09 Those who slither in the dark. The ones that caused her so much pain with their experiments, that killed her brothers, that cut her lifespan. And yet she was forced to strike a deal with them to defeat the church of seiros in order to achieve her goal (destroying the crest system, in order to avoid others from suffering just for the same thing that she was experimented on). It's really something that takes a toll on someone, and even if she plans to betray them, it's not like she is scoffing the deaths that she is going to cause by waging war across the continent.
Yeah he said he only played Blue Lions, so I don’t think he’d even know any of this 🥲 makes the song so much more tragic if you’ve played Edelgard’s route and you’ve heard The Color of Sunrise during the credits instead (edge of dawn without the sad lyrics and instead a major key)
Edelgard is such a tragic character. She had consigned herself to being alone in order to pursue her ideals, only to arrive at the Officers Academy and be surrounded by people that cared about her, looked up to her. And Byleth was someone who was able to guide her, stand by her side. Edelgard never expected that she would be happy. But she had already planned and made alliances, the war was already coming. She wanted nothing more than to be a normal girl, but was trapped by fate.
To a large part she did not have much choice ... this is something a lot of people seem to gloss over ... Edelgard was crafted to be an instrument of war for TWSITD ... The Empire was basically under their control .... its not like she could really stop it ... if she tried to go against them as was in 3 houses with basically no proof she would be done away with ... or the Empire would be destroyed in a civil war ... while TWSITD would just retreat to their base and do it again later ... and the suffocating influence of the Church would remain ... The war was inevitable TWSITD would stroke it later if not then ... they would not stop until stopped
@@Ower8x By herself she could have not done much, but you are ignoring that she went to the monastery. There, she had 5 years to form an alliance with the next leaders of the other 2 continental countries and even with the church. She already had a strong connection with Dimitri, so that one was already in the bag. Her path is understandable given she is "broken" (cause of the life she had), but it is ridiculous to try to excuse her with: "she didn't have any other options". She is the one leader out of the 3 houses who is 100% unexcusable. Also, why did she need to deal with the church before dealing with TWSITD? How was the church worse than them? Why did she have force a unification of Fodlan? Why force people to quit the church? She literally is forcing her will on the whole continent and yet some people try to excuse her... IRL she would be rightly labeled a dictator.
@@redrhinoz2119 Where are you getting 5 years? .... The game states when we reach the academy that THIS year the 3 Heirs are present at the academy ... there is no indication they joined at different times There is no indication they were there years before Byleth arrived ... We also do not have higher or lover year students at the academy ... Monica is a special case because of her kidnaping, otherwise there are no year 2 or lower years students ... The officiary academy seems to be a 1 year maybe a bit longer education modeled after real world Military Officer training So she did not have 5 years to make allies at the academy ... So your 5 years looks just like a head canon you have to put all blame on Edelgard ... Or you are confusing the 5 year skip with time spent at the academy ... why go after church first? 1. You are ignoring she was molded by TWSITD to be an instrument of war ... even if she hated them does not mean they did not influence how she thinks ... 2. Power levels ... the Church was stronger .... so it needed to go first ... or do you believe TWSITD just like machination and would not attack Seiros/Rhela directly if thy were stronger than them? It was practical calculation ... I want to defeat 2 groups that also are enemies one is more powerful the other is less right now I dont have the power to defeat either .. so I ally weith the weaker to gain power and defeat the stronger then turn on them 3 Ability to ... she had the ability to go against the church but not really against TWSITD that control the Empire ... her window of opportunity are the few months from coming to the academy to the rescue of "Monica" in 3 Houses ... but she is unable to get anything that would allow her to go against them in this time ... and by the time "Monica" is killed things are to far gone .... thats the major point of divergence for 3 Hopes ... With her agent Jeritza in a position to pick and suggest missions, the bandit leader dead and the group scattered in panic she has an opportunity to get what she needs to go against them ... that said p2 of 3 Hopes has its own problems ... Not sure what you are talking about ... I have never once argued Edelgard is not guilty ... I am talking about the degree of guilt ... Since there are massive mitigating circumstances, Mainly: She was altered both physically and menially by TWSITD so much so that large parts of her memory was suppressed ...then she was groomed to be a war started before coming to the academy ... In light of that I confidently can say the degree of her guilt is quite up for debate ...
@@Ower8x Yeah, I got the 5 years twisted. It has been a while since I played it. That aside, I stand by everything else. To the points you wrote. 1. You mention she was molded. So what? A delinquent whose parents fail them is still a delinquent. And you accept that her decision is not out of logic but because of her programming. 2. "Power levels" The church is strong, evil, etc. So the best course of action is war against such a strong group? Instead of let's say "discredit the church so that it didn't turn into a continental war". Her decisions were stupid, childish and not practical. 3. She can't go against TWSITD before, but then she can after? It is B.S. And she is 100% guilty of the WAR. There is no debate for that. Then you can add transforming people into monsters, invading sovereign nations, regicide, kidnapping, etc. She is the biggest villain in EVERY ROUTE when you look at things objectively. But because she is a "cute girl" with a sob story some people still side with her.
FE:3H is one of the reasons I bought a Switch Lite when the pandemic hit and oh my god it's so good. Music, gameplay, characters, Story... It really is a masterpiece of a game.
Oh man I love that you've done this video! It's been so long since FE3H come out (five years is a long time I swear) but it's so nostalgic to hear this theme again in the context of a breakdown
Honestly this is such a great song, and I love how before playing the game you just sort of vibe with the song, but after finishing it, you realize the lyrics are actually spoiler heavy. Also, Hresvelgr is Edelgards last name. I love the “I look to you like a red rose, seeking the sun no matter where it goes” because in every route Edelgard has an attachment to Byleth, and he/she is the one she admires most, and Byleth is the reason why she’s better in some routes as opposed to others. I also love the “open the door and walk away never give in to the call of yesterday” because it’s like she knows her plans means betraying Garreg Mach and all the friends she has made at that school, and I still think about the battle before the timeskip. She genuinely doesn’t want to hurt any of her friends, but knows she also can’t allow her feelings to get in the way too much since she’s already taken things to an extreme. I also love the “I fear the edge of dawn knowing time betrays” because it’s referring to her shortened lifespan, and that’s kind of why war is her fastest and best solution so she can finish the war, reverse that effect on her lifespan, and govern. The “my blackened heart scorched by flames a force I can’t run from” likely refers to Those Who Slither in the Dark, and how in a way they sort of have her on a leash. Also, I know you said you haven’t played all routes, so the stuff I’m talking about are things that are mentioned in all routes. I also love the reference to the different routes like “they are as snow melting away, yet sealing your warmth if only for a day” referring to the split route from Edelgard’s if you side against her in favor of Rhea, it’s like she was expecting Byleth to side with the church if you pick against Edelgard, but before that it was like she was enjoying ever moment she had with Byleth and the Black Eagles before the big moment happens. “As the wind calms my thoughts, I held strong in this terrace. I feel at peace. Carried away by the winds song” referring to Claude since they have a shared goal. “The Blue Moonlight cuts across our side as pure as clear as a ringing bell, reaching for us in the night” obviously talking Dimitri and how they will never see eye to eye with each other since Dimitri won’t believe anything Edelgard has to say and will think her responsible for the tragedy of Duscur, her mothers death and a lot of other things.
i relisten to the song after i'm done with each route and it hit different each time and add more depth. My first route was silver snow by mistake coz i didn't know the requirement for Edelgard route and i was in pain playing through that route the whole time then more for Edelgard on her route, Edelgard route is the only route that i complete the game in all difficulty meaning i have clear it multiple time, each that song up just bring tear to me
Woah, its awesome you published this video. I casually remembered your video on God Shattering Star and I saw that vid when it came out. And to be honest, Fire Emblem Three Houses is one of if not my favorite game. It's not perfect by any means, but at the time I played it, it became such a formative and personal experience. The Black Eagles was the route I first played, and also, my favorite. Though the shortest, I loved the dynamic between the students and Byleth. Also, it was the route I did manage to S-support Edelgard. This song is so meaningful to me, who was so scared back then of changes in the pandemic and also my student life since I was graduating from high school. I can relate to Edelgard, in the sense I'm just a scared girl and I am aware that I had to let go of so many things, so many experiences and relationships. But still it felt so comforting to listen to this. Thanks for the video and analysis, and I hope you enjoy playing the other routes in the game if you haven't!
the whole "my heart scorched by flames" line refers to that Edelgard had the Crest of Flames (aka the Fire Emblem) forcibly infused into her blood, which is one of the main driving forces of her wanting to destroy the crest and nobility system. Its one of my favorite things about this incredible song
Just here to tell Marco to play the new Honkai Star Rail update. For one the story is amazing, but we also have breathtaking music and vibes, especially when it comes to the boss fights introduced in the update. And also, LITERAL OPERA which just pumps you up with how epic it feels to listen to it.
My take on Edelgard has always been that a teenager should never have been given the reins of power and responsibility that she has. Traumatized, beaten, broken, and ultimately told: "Hey you'll either wage a terrible war that'll kill millions, that you'll probably lose or you'll become a puppet slave of some dark organization. Your choice." When every move is a bad one, you take the one that has the best shot at giving you a happy ending.
The song is very descriptive of what happens in the game. And yes playing the other routes does change quite a bit about what happens. Ultimately all the routes are sad for Edelgard.
I'm definitely going into spoilers here. "My blackened heart, Scorched by flames, a force I can't run from" This references the darkest part of Edelgard's past. Blackened heart, not only for betraying her friends but the scars of having been experimented on and having lost all her siblings to those experiments as well. Scorched by flames, having the crest of flames forced in her body even though nobody should have more than one crest. The force she can't run from being the revenge against those who experimented and wanting to change the current status quo which has tormented many a people. Crests are an important part of the game and a good portion of students have directly or indirectly been harmed just because of them.
If I remember right Sylvain's brother was cut from the line of succession of his house despite being a worthy leader merely because he had no chest. Sylvain feels guilty so he acts frivolous to mask his regret for having his crest while his genius brother is discriminated against. It makes the head canon of joining Edelgard make perfect sense because her ideal world would have seen Sylvain's brother earn his birthright which would see him still alive.
I am going to spoil some things in Edelgard's route so if you have any interest in three houses please don't proceed Now, Edelgard had 13 other siblings and when the nobles of the Empire overtook the emperor. Edelgard and her siblings would be given to those who slither in the dark and have crest experiments on them. Edelgard states that all her siblings either died or went insane and that she would become the fruit of that organization's labor. Edelgard would now have a hatred of crests, her hair now stained white, and her life shortened. Edelgard would want to create a society where crests are no longer valued and end the practice of nobility. Also the mask mentioned in the song is probably in reference to the fact that Edelgard is the Flame Emperor
Hey Marco, have you played odin's sphere? The Soundtrack on that is something I think you'd really like. Also the art and the game in itself is pretty great!
@@Anthem34 Yeah I meant the credits one. The one that starts with the Piano if I'm not wrong. But I have heard the Japanese once or Twice and some one uploaded it in a funny title to hide it from copyright strikes but I don't think that's how it works, and wasn't there a Duet one too? Idk I've forgotten shit it's been so long since I've last heard this fucking song.
I'm sure you have and it is technically the same song, but i also recommend listening to the normal version! (not seasons of warfare, they're both amazing and tell similar stories and thoughts) it tells it in a more somber and emotional way, it is also just a beautiful peace as well
I always had the impression that Edelgard knew she wouldn't life through the war she was about to bring. She never wanted for power but to bring change to Fodlan and was ready to sacrifice herself for it. Even in the route where she survived she ultimately stepped down from the throne following her idea of leading through merit not heritage. Also like Lysithea she propable knew she wouldn't live for long anyways. Thinking that way it doesn't really matter what route you play she ultimately won in the end.
Love your videos, especially the League of Legends champion themes and the Destiny stuff. Would love if you had a look at some of the Dead by Daylight chasethemes, eventho there is less to look at as they're made to fit into a loop and focus more on rythm. Sry if any of the english is wonky, love from germany.
You should play Crimson flower- Edelgards route- its so satifying and wonderful to save El and brings out all the truths - I cant play the other routes any more. esp if you romance her.
@@Simlan12345 The only truth she brings out is that Rhea is a dragon, but everything else she's wrong about, and its sad that she never confronted with the facts in CF.
I know your chance of seeing this is almost 0 but if you do i would really love it if you could react to bleach's OST i have a gut feeling you'll love it
I think Three Houses has one of the best storylines in the fire emblem series. I haven't played all of the games, but of those I have played, this is definitely my favorite. Most of the paths have complex stories where you kind of want to side with each House.
Edelgard... my first party in Three house..what a...I was just so depressed by the events of this way ! I very like the character but...I just wanted to killl a big dark dragon to protect the world build by a beautiful light dragon , as in lot of others Fire emblem ! I was not prepared to live something harder than Game Of throne whereas beggining is just a japanese simple fantasy version of Harry Potter school. this music is so like Edelgard, a loving music, but we should not like this
On the "blackened heart" passages, Edelgard went through some HORRIBLE shit as a kid that essentially "blackened her heart" to the world, she say it all for what it had truly become and knew it had to be undone, she lost the ability to love any of it, until Byleth comes around, who is the subject of the next passage, the sun to Edelgard's red rose. I mean, there are several reasons I can only see Crimson Flower as the cannon route of the story (the one where you side with Edelgard, if you don't know), but this song is definitely one of them, even more so if you pursue a romance with Edelgard. It just makes this song even more profound, and ACCURATE, ya know? You don't get to experience her feelings towards Byleth as much as in her own route, obviously, and though she is still the only lord to show feelings towards Byleth even when she's not supporting her, it still feels incomplete narratively unless Byleth and Edelgard end up side by side. This song plays like a longing not just for times passing and her professor being her beacon of light, but also a longing for that professor, for her to remain at her side even if times do inevitably change. THAT is the whole point of this song, to me, even into the last third of the song it's ALL about her longing for Byleth to remain with her, going into the final parts as well she sings about having to move forward anyways and needing to be strong enough to not let past desires stop her or hold her back, BUT then goes back into singing about wanting Byleth to "reach for my hand." Not only is the sadness palpable, but the actual blossoming love is too, it becomes a beautiful first act, but only in Crimson Flower, and I don't know of anything like this for any other route. Also this song in any other route is simply sad, the story it tells cut short, no matter the choices you make. So yeah, I think this song becomes even better once you play Crimson Flower and romance Edelgard, as I mentioned it becomes more of a "first act" piece that leads directly into the rest of the game, and less of a sad finality.
Funnily enough this song was made with Silver Snow in mind l mind. As at its core this song is about betrayal. It's about Edelgard betraying those who ask he cared about for her own ends and the only route where this truly is the case is Silver Snow. That is why this song does not play in Crimson Flower as the betrayal was swept under the rug, and Edelgard was forgiven while in the other routes she wasn't. And that is what the song is about. They don't end up side by side because Edelgard's betrayal was too much, too many people died because of her including Byleth's own father, and Byleth's home is also gone because of Edelgard. So despite caring for her they cannot in good conscious, condone her actions. There must be a better way to improve Fodlan of only she'd try them(Slyvain of all people points this out in CF and ironically enough Edelgard in SS, VW and AM admits to this too). The song depicts a tragedy without a happy end for the singer.
@@brightlight8852 That's cause it's intended to be sad, but as music isn't usually objective I'm just saying that I think it works even better as a love song to Byleth in Crimson Flower. Also the song has nothing to do with Byleth's perspective, it's ALL just Edelgard's, so if Byleth is in a different route and can't accept Edelgard's plan it really has no bearing on the song itself. Also I don't think Edelgard ever said she regretted her plans or admit to there being any "better" options? I'm pretty sure she just laments not having Byleth at her side and how that would have likely changed the outcomes. Side note though, Byleth's "home" isn't destroyed, as Byleth didn't actually have a home, they lived on the road with Jeralt, they were just fond of several locations, like Remire. Besides the point though.
@vicariousxiv2436 I don't think so, I mean they didn't use the song in Crimson Flower for a reason because the events don't match up to the song which is about the singer lamenting about how their choices have pushed Byleth away from them. Don't forget that, unlike the songs you hear on the radio video game, songs are meant to fit a scene or story, and the story being told is not that of a romance but a tragedy. I meant storylinewise. Music is meant to enhance the story. Byleth's perspective is important as it helps you to understand why Edelgard and Byleth are at odds with one another. Edelgard hurt Byleth in a way that can never be undone she took away both of Byleth's homes and the only family they had, plus the family that Byleth didn't even know they had. It's why Byleth loses their form (which is actually called Nirvana in Japanese), it's why they never learn about themselves. From Byleth's perspective, joining Edelgard makes no sense. The game acknowledges this and defaults into Byleth moving to kill Edelgard. In the song Edelgard is reminiscing about the past good times at the Garreg Maach and sit fears the dawn knowing that when it comes her dreams of the past have ended and she now faces the brutal present the present that her betrayal has created. Hence why the time betrays her because, in reality, once the edge of dawn comes, she'll be alone. In CF, Edelgard doesn't lament because she's surrounded by friends. Byleth chose her against all odds even if it doesn't make any sense for them to do so. In CF she's just as free asleep as she is awake, but in SS, AM, and VW for Edelgard the dawn represents the end of the night of her dream she even says it in the song she wishes she could stay in the memory. Why would that be the case if she wakes up to her loved ones? Edelgard's final words in VWb and SS is her telling Byleth to kill her because of they don't the war will continue and people will continue to die. So she begs the professor to kill her to end the bloodshed. In AM she also pushes Dimitri to kill her in self-defense by throwing the knife at him. Also, nope, you see their home at the beginning of the game. Byleth lives in Remire village, which was their first home. Their second was the Garreg Maach win of the first place where Byleth ever felt that they belonged. Byleth does not like being a mercenary they make that known in quite a few supports, even Jeralt admits that taking Byleth away from the Garreg Maach was a mistake.
@@brightlight8852 No I guess I just disagree with how you're perceiving the song. It's not from her perspective afterwards, it's from just before, she's singing of the fear of what will come to pass, so it hasn't happened yet. I also just generally disagree with how you're representing Byleth in terms of Edelgard's betrayal, there's nothing in the game that indicates Byleth feels that way, like they lost "two homes" or even blames Edelgard. The game also doesn't default to Byleth moving to hurt Edelgard, I honestly don't know how you can see that, the game is deliberately neutral on all such decisions, that's it's main goal and point lol And ofc I don't agree about it being "specific" like that. It's Edelgard's fears, and they apply in every route cause Edelgard is the same in every route, whether you see her frequently or not, so subjectively seeing other connections in the lyrics isn't against the rules of video game music or anything. I don't think it plays in CF cause it's meant to make you sad, and CF is actually about a "bright tomorrow," the rose that got the sun it needed, so clearly not the place for a sad song, despite it still becoming quite beautiful in different context.
@vicariousxiv2436 No I heavily disagre the song is from after the timeskip during the war. Look at the lyrics >Here in cherished halls, In peaceful days I fear the edge of dawn Knowing time betrays Why would she fear the dawn knowing time betrays her if the betrayal just happened? Time betrays her because the she's reminiscing of the good times but when morning comes and she wakes up she'll wake up 5 years later to the people she cared about all against her. And this is both the opening lyrics and the chorus it so it sets the tone of the song. The section right before it makes it even more clear. >Reach for my hand, I'll soar away, Into the dawn, oh, I wish I could stay If she's talking about being happy then why is she upset about soaring? She's upset about soaring because this is a dream and she's dreaming about the professor taking her hand because it never happened ands she's now separated from the professor. But why would waking up be a bad thing unless her reality is not like her dream. Faint lights pass through colored glass, In this beloved place Silver shines, the world dines A smile on each face As joy surrounds, comfort abounds and I can feel I'm breaking free For just this moment lost in time. I am finally me Edelgard in Crimson Flower is still at the Garreg Maach and is surrounded by her friends who care about her. She's no longer hiding. >I long to stayWhere the light dwellsTo guard against the coldThat I know so well Aydin Again CF Edelgard's is amongst her friends with her beloved professor so the song being about her being separated from these people doesn't fit.. >Open the door And walk away Never give in To the call of yesterday Again her she's stating that those peaceful days of her being surrounded by her friends and with her beloved are over. That is the call of yesterday. And she's walking away from it, accepting the present that is very different from her memories. And the jp version of this song is even me explicit about it being her remembering the happy times. >The wind shines on my cheeks Remains the same until I wake up >Dying the heart with these beloved memories By the way she also speaks of a promise that she cannot keep which only happens in SS that promise is the promise to meet up again 5 years later. SHE is the one breaking it. In VF she kept the promise in SS she didn't. And her final words to Byleth in SS are "I wish I could walk with you" CF is the only route where the song doesn't fit, so it doesn't play. Sadly what I say is true Byleth actually mentions in quite a few supports that they don't like being a mercenary yes they are good at it but they don't like it. A lot of people tend to confuse Byleth being silent for Byleth having no opinion and so don't really pay attention to Byleth's dialogue options. The characters even say it in story Byleth only started opening up after going there. And in 3 Hopes Byleth gets green hair but it's not the Nirvana form because that Byleth was still isolated. And if you look at Byleth's eyes at the end of CF you can see that they have no emotion in them. Byleth has regressed, yes regressed, Byleth was never a human. You should also try paying attention to Byleth's disligue options after Remire is destroyed. Also yeah you have zero idea on what you are talking about. In order to play CF, you need to have a B support with Edelgard and you need to witness her coronation if you do not do those things then you cannot play CF. The game default is SS. The devs even outright admitted to this. This is also the real reason why most of the Black Eages paralogues either aren't available in CF, Ferdinand and Caspar, or don't make any sense in CF Petra and Lindhardt. CF is actually a "secret route" the devs even admitted that the route was originally going to be hard to unlock. Byleth does default to trying to kill Edelgard for hurting their students. And like I said even the devs admitted that CF is the bonus route. Edelgard is also not the same in every route. She's the same in SS,VW and AM but not in CF. In those other routes she's a tyrant who doesn't even pretend to have the moral high ground. She doesn't trust in her own generals or people. Petra is not recruited in AM, and VW outright says this. Hell, Edelgard herself outright says it in AM. Edge of Dawn has lyrics. It uses words and words have meaning. The purpose of music in videogame is to assist with storytelling. They don't use the song because the song is about separation. If it could fit as aromantic song then they would have used it, but they don't because it's not a romantic song.
Now you really need to do a Black Eagles playthrough to get the remaining context. Blue Lions is the best first route, since it doesn't get weighed down by lore, but Black Eagles jumps into it, and Golden deer exist
They are as snow (Silver Snow route)
The Blue Moonlight, (the Azure Moon route).
As the wind calms my thoughts, (Verdant Wind route)
"Open the door and walk away, never give in to the call of yesterday". Edelgard accepts her future, her role. She remembers the happy days but accepts that it is in the past, she moves forward no matter the cost.
I would listen to it again, and consider that the following characters are:
The Sun - Byleth (playable character) who’s teaching is seen as the suns rays and approval for siding with them
Crimson Flower / Rose - Edelgard a flower that only blooms in war and withers in every route the sun does not side with her.
Lol, nice analysis! I did one without even seeing this 😂
"And dimitri certainly went through phases" made me fucking lose it
This song greatly recontextualizes if you do eddies route FIRST and then follow up with any other
I played the Black Eagles Route first and i have to say... the Song hits different. When you dive into Edelgards backgrond and recognize what she has been through, then this musical masterpiece strikes right through the heart.
@@longo9595 EXACTLY
@@longo9595 most of the time i hear it i tear up
@@morriganrenfield8240 me too😭
I played Blue Lions first and THEN listened to this and I realised what she was saying and i just had to start a Black Eagle playthrough
It just gets me with the "I fear the edge of dawn, knowing time betrays"
Edelgard is terrified of each breaking dawn, because she knows each passing day just puts her that much closer to the end of her personal peace, as well as her own shortened lifespan.
Loving the Fire Emblem Three Houses coverage. It's not a recent game, but the music is still so memorable.
We can gash here. I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH
Lady of Hresvelg was the main reason why I played the Black Eagles route first, listening to it in the opening cinematic got me intrigued since it was definitely about Edelgard. The music from Three Hopes is phenomenal but that's because its a bit more action oriented compared to Three Houses so the music is in a faster tempo, but its still pretty good.
this song makes me cry every time i listen to it😭😭🙏🙏 black eagles always
@@rhettmitchell Still, it's surprising how he was able to see how with just a song was able to deduce so much about the character
So beautiful. I cried when this played in game.
I'm not sure why but I'm always attracted to songs that have that bit of sadness.
@@redrhinoz2119
Where are you getting 5 years? ....
The game states when we reach the academy that THIS year the 3 Heirs are present at the academy ... there is no indication they joined at different times
There is no indication they were there years before Byleth arrived ...
We also do not have higher or lover year students at the academy ... Monica is a special case because of her kidnaping, otherwise there are no year 2 or lower years students ...
The officiary academy seems to be a 1 year maybe a bit longer education modeled after real world Military Officer training
So she did not have 5 years to make allies at the academy ...
I want to defeat 2 groups that also are enemies one is more powerful the other is less right now I dont have the power to defeat either .. so I ally weith the weaker to gain power and defeat the stronger then turn on them
3 Ability to ... she had the ability to go against the church but not really against TWSITD that control the Empire ... her window of opportunity are the few months from coming to the academy to the rescue of "Monica" in 3 Houses ... but she is unable to get anything that would allow her to go against them in this time ... and by the time "Monica" is killed things are to far gone ....
thats the major point of divergence for 3 Hopes ...
Since there are massive mitigating circumstances, Mainly:
She was altered both physically and menially by TWSITD so much so that large parts of her memory was suppressed ...then she was groomed to be a war started before coming to the academy ...
This was actually one of my old patreon requests, so I'm really glad seeing this here.
Oh I’m so glad you’re reacting to this one! The way I was obsessed with this game for months
FE:3H is one of the reasons I bought a Switch Lite when the pandemic hit and oh my god it's so good.
Music, gameplay, characters, Story... It really is a masterpiece of a game.
👍❤
My first route was silver snow by mistake coz i didn't know the requirement for Edelgard route and i was in pain playing through that route the whole time then more for Edelgard on her route, Edelgard route is the only route that i complete the game in all difficulty meaning i have clear it multiple time, each that song up just bring tear to me
This piece always makes me so nostalgic and sad.
2:54 yeah, it’s like when people say, “I wish you could know you’re in the good old days while you’re in them”
The lyrics make way more sense if you play Edelgard's route. Gotta love Three Houses
the whole "my heart scorched by flames" line refers to that Edelgard had the Crest of Flames (aka the Fire Emblem) forcibly infused into her blood, which is one of the main driving forces of her wanting to destroy the crest and nobility system. Its one of my favorite things about this incredible song
I'd love Heritors of Arcadia from Fire Emblem Echoes

Just here to tell Marco to play the new Honkai Star Rail update. For one the story is amazing, but we also have breathtaking music and vibes, especially when it comes to the boss fights introduced in the update. And also, LITERAL OPERA which just pumps you up with how epic it feels to listen to it.
I recommend Ex Astris- "Ordorbis"
It is incredibly addictive and beautiful to hear.
Your choice."
When every move is a bad one, you take the one that has the best shot at giving you a happy ending.
The song is very descriptive of what happens in the game. And yes playing the other routes does change quite a bit about what happens.
Ultimately all the routes are sad for Edelgard.
Ozar Midrashim and Ariel's Lament from Soul Reaver 1 and 2.
I'm definitely going into spoilers here.
"My blackened heart, Scorched by flames, a force I can't run from"
This references the darkest part of Edelgard's past.
It's interesting that Marco is right about how Edelgard is forced to cooperate with TWISITD.
I am going to spoil some things in Edelgard's route so if you have any interest in three houses please don't proceed
Now, Edelgard had 13 other siblings and when the nobles of the Empire overtook the emperor. Also the mask mentioned in the song is probably in reference to the fact that Edelgard is the Flame Emperor
one game you should look into is Spore. The game's music really helps when creating things.

I'm sure you have and it is technically the same song, but i also recommend listening to the normal version! (not seasons of warfare, they're both amazing and tell similar stories and thoughts) it tells it in a more somber and emotional way, it is also just a beautiful peace as well
Hey Marco. I really hope you one day break down Gut’s theme from the original Berserk anime.

I think Three Houses has one of the best storylines in the fire emblem series. I haven't played all of the games, but of those I have played, this is definitely my favorite. Most of the paths have complex stories where you kind of want to side with each House.
Play the Black Eagles route. You mentioned in the video that you've only played Azure Moon, so you have no idea what the truth is behind Edelgard!

Edelgard... my first party in Three house..what a...I was just so depressed by the events of this way !
The game also doesn't default to Byleth moving to hurt Edelgard, I honestly don't know how you can see that, the game is deliberately neutral on all such decisions, that's it's main goal and point lol
And ofc I don't agree about it being "specific" like that.
Look at the lyrics
>Here in cherished halls, In peaceful days I fear the edge of dawn Knowing time betrays
Why would she fear the dawn knowing time betrays her if the betrayal just happened? Time betrays her because the she's reminiscing of the good times but when morning comes and she wakes up she'll wake up 5 years later to the people she cared about all against her.
And this is both the opening lyrics and the chorus it so it sets the tone of the song. The section right before it makes it even more clear.
>Reach for my hand, I'll soar away, Into the dawn, oh, I wish I could stay
If she's talking about being happy then why is she upset about soaring? She's upset about soaring because this is a dream and she's dreaming about the professor taking her hand because it never happened ands she's now separated from the professor. But why would waking up be a bad thing unless her reality is not like her dream.
Faint lights pass through colored glass,
In this beloved place
Silver shines, the world dines
A smile on each face
As joy surrounds, comfort abounds
and I can feel I'm breaking free
For just this moment lost in time.
I am finally me
Edelgard in Crimson Flower is still at the Garreg Maach and is surrounded by her friends who care about her. She's no longer hiding.
>I long to stayWhere the light dwellsTo guard against the coldThat I know so well
Aydin
Again CF Edelgard's is amongst her friends with her beloved professor so the song being about her being separated from these people doesn't fit..
>Open the door
And walk away
Never give in
To the call of yesterday
Again her she's stating that those peaceful days of her being surrounded by her friends and with her beloved are over. That is the call of yesterday. And she's walking away from it, accepting the present that is very different from her memories.
And the jp version of this song is even me explicit about it being her remembering the happy times.
>The wind shines on my cheeks
Remains the same until I wake up
>Dying the heart with these beloved memories
By the way she also speaks of a promise that she cannot keep which only happens in SS that promise is the promise to meet up again 5 years later. SHE is the one breaking it. In VF she kept the promise in SS she didn't.
And her final words to Byleth in SS are "I wish I could walk with you"
CF is the only route where the song doesn't fit, so it doesn't play.
