Played the cabinet. This is one tasteful piece of game. Irem made some beautiful games. This is a piece of art. Art from the 80's. It's never coming back.
This game is pure poetry! Both on Turbographix and in the arcade! Play it in a dark room with stereo on and enjoy the wicked atmosphere of foggy sunsets, cloudy days, wicked nights in marshlands! Is a Gekiga fairytale made game!
best arcade game ever!.. I remember how I sat and played in a bar that had it for hours in late 80's and early 90's! ended the game several times... still could play every day of the rest of my life!!... its just SO great!... btw.. Im thinking of making a new version for xbox one / ps4 / pc - etc.. who would like that?
This is a very difficult game for many players. So, for those who are having a tough time with it, I've put together some of my best tips to help you get better. Now the first thing I suggest you do is make an effort to obtain as many extra lives as you can to help you get further into the game. Point-pressing is the trick and here's how to do it. *2:23* - Point-press here by stacking your shadow warriors in a straight line (always keeping the top one at the highest point for full screen coverage and protection) and switch to preferably the shurikens, but you can also power-up the bomb and use that. Rack up points until there's about 50 seconds left and then make your way to the end to face the boss. *3:56* - Point-press here by using the triangle formation and sword. Accumulate points until there's about 1:30 left and then get movin' quickly to the end. *6:56* - Point-press here by using the triangle formation and sword. I forgot when you have to stop, but you can figure it out. *9:28** or **9:38* - Point-press here by moving straight up and down and using both platforms. It's a little risky and tricky because of the white and earth ninjas sticking their thang where it don't belong, so be careful. And again, I don't recall how long you can do it. NOTE: You may be in a good position to have enough points to earn the last extra life before or during Stage 6, so skipping it this time is probably the prudent play... I kind of remember doing it to only get the highest score possible. *Stage 1*: Before the boss rises, there's a safe spot just to the right of where the ninjas come out on the left side. Stack your shadow warriors and switch to either the throwing star or bomb to kill ALL ninjas for points. Just be quick going left and right because you don't want any of those bastards to get away! *Stage 2*: The easiest way to beat the boss is to start on the ground by the tree on the right, then jump up to the second branch of the middle tree, drop down to the first branch and then up left to the first branch on that tree. It's a piece of cake, so you can work out the rest. As for what came before that, there's really not much to talk about. Just use common sense when it comes to what to do when a bomb is too close. You don't hit it and let it blow up in your face! YOU AVOID IT! NOTE: The music for this level is probably one of the best tracks I've EVER heard in a video game! Simply awesome! *Stage 3*: At 5:57, you see that big badass with the sword? Well, once you kill him, he'll keep reappearing at least a few more times as you make your way towards the swamp. If you don't want to deal with him, you can simply jump over him and keep him on the screen to your left. Once you do that, use the sickle and chain and just 'creep' your way to the midpoint of the stage - being careful to only swing it left to kill those 'pea shooters.' You may need to face two Ghost Warriors at the most using this strategy. NOTE: You'll notice this dude just ran through the first half and the Ghost Warriors only appeared twice. That might be because the game is on 'normal'. I'm pretty sure it plays differently on 'hardest'. *Stage 4*: When facing the 'Two Block' boss, you'll want to jump high to trigger them to appear and get some early shots in with the bomb. As you land allow the right block to push you towards the stationary left block. When it's about to squeeze you, do a big jump diagonally to the right at the last second. Next, run close to the right wall and wait for the block to circle back to where you are. When it hovers above you, it will come straight down. Avoid it's crushing blow by moving to the left of it and STOP. The block sitting in the left corner will make it's first move up and towards you. When it's around halfway, jump over it and try to land about a few inches from the wall and then move an inch to the right and STOP. Keep repeating this 'horizontal figure 8' pattern going back and forth. It sounds kind of complicated but it's not. If done properly the blocks should move in a predictable pattern which'll allow you to run a figure 8 through it, making it rather easy to defeat. But always remember if you don't execute the initial move precisely to start the pattern, and blocks start to move randomly, just make sure to keep moving left and right by doing big diagonal jumps and staying away from the walls. You'll keep the blocks apart and at a 'distance' giving you space to escape and attack with ease. BTW: Only one block moves at a time. One block sticks and then the other moves. Where you (jump) is where they'll tend to go. NOTE: When traversing through the 'rock ceiling' portion of this level, it's a good idea to jump/hop while moving right to lure bombs up and away, and only use the S&C to hit ninjas and bombs at a distance. *Stage 5*: On a harder setting use the S&C to beat the kite boss because I'm quite certain that even if you make a beeline to the top, there won't be enough time to kill him with the sword. This guy had plenty of time to spare (30 seconds), which means he had to have been playing on an easier mode. NOTE: There is a direct path up the cliff where you can pick up the fire shield to help you defeat the boss. But in order to do so, you can't make any platform jumping mistakes after you grab it. It's not too difficult, so I'll let you figure it out. *Stage 6*: The general rule of thumb for this level is to not do big jumps unless it's really necessary, especially on a higher difficulty setting. The reason is because you don't want to get caught in midair with little or no options to evade a samurai or monk's attack. But having said that, there will be times when you will get 'caught' forcing you to do some kind of defensive maneuver to survive. Stopping your momentum in the air by pressing the left button at the height of your jump is the main one. If you do it right in certain situations where the samurai is flying slightly above you, you have a shot to duck his slash. Or when you're in line to get nailed by the monk's fighting stick on the ground, you can do this to pull back a bit to avoid getting hit like at 14:13. The other thing you can do is: If you're using the S&C, you can quickly switch to the sword and try to deflect the samurai and monk's attack. It's not easy to do that, but it's an option. NOTE: Most ninja-type enemies are ghosts, so be aware that only their weapons can kill you. Remember that and use it to your advantage. The other thing that's very important, especially for this level is to always press attack as soon as you press jump (a rolling action with your fingers) when using the sword or S&C. With so much crap that can kill you from above, you need to protect yourself at all times. *Stage 7*: At 15:58, you'll notice he splits the two samurai and gets both in a chase position. If you know the exact movements of the 'Super Monk' and the placement of the poisonous gas, then you can haul ass to 'The Drop' like this guy did. But, you need some serious skill to do that and it's very risky. So I prefer to attack this stage more conservatively. What I do is this: Going back to 15:58 where the first power-up is, I'll clear any samurai before creeping my way to the precise moment when the Super Monk appears. When he does, he will always go up and run to the left. So from the spot where you triggered the monk, you'll want to immediately jump straight up and shoot him from behind while clinging to the ceiling and standing still between the top and bottom puffs of gas. Keep firing bombs as he makes his way back to you. Then as soon as he's a few millimeters away, drop down and he'll continue to run past right. I won't tell you the rest, but it's in this area where you can easily kill the monk making your path to 'The Drop' a lot simpler. BTW: Always watch for samurai as you're shooting the monk. You'll need to quick-fire both as you move up and down. NOTE: If you kill the Super Monk and die before you get to 'The Drop', you'll start at the midway point and have to deal with the monk again - so DON'T DIE! *'The Drop'* - At 16:30, you'll see a single ninja in the right half of the screen. I would drop to the left of him and use the musical cues to direct your character in basically what is two 'question mark' type paths down the right side followed by pretty much a straight drop with a few small zig zags. You can obviously solve the best path to take by watching what this guy does in his vid. *FINAL BOSS*: Create gaps in his lightning bolts by either jumping high to lure them up, so you can travel underneath, or drive them into the ground using hesitation-type moves, so you can jump over them and through a space. Keep moving from one side to the other remembering to always get in some hits with every pass. NOTE: Try not to run directly to the wall on either side because chances are good you'll get trapped there and die! And one other note: On 'hardest', you have to work really hard to create those gaps. What you see in this vid is nothing compared to that. Anyway, those are some of the best tips I can give you. Good luck and have fun! (Final Revision)
This game...This game. ..omg...takes me back....The game....The music (especially) the bosses. ....makes me go so hyper. ...i just repeating it over and over. . (Wish I could find it)..also wish I could get the game on my phone. ...such a great post and last stage..last boss...you are a g. ...With your 0.1 sec left.....nuff respect. ....even more if you could help me get it on my phone..
So that's how you survive that long drop to the last boss. That part always keeps getting me back in the day. couldn't complete the game because of it.
My favorite TurbografX-16 game as a kid! Big difference in the soundtrack, the hi-hat on Stage 4 makes such a big difference...hahaha Always used the bombs, you're brave beating this with the sword!
I could kiss you right now. You don't know what I've been through to look for this game. All I had was a visual of the game in my brain. No name nothing. I just searching images in google using all sorts of keyword. After thousands of images I found it and then found your channel. Again thank you. game-oldies.com/play-online/ninja-spirit-nec-turbografx-16# there ya go. actual arcade game. you should buy a joypad (snes to usb pc would be good at $20) or an arcade stick. you can't really play this game or games with so much action with a keyboard.
One of my favorites on the turbografx16. Even though the graphic on the arcade is more detailed and has more debt, the version has better colors and better soundtracks I think.
MrVolksbeetle I never said it was, but the arcade soundtrack simply has much more punch to it and the PC Engine CD could have copied that no problem. It would have been easier to develope too since you don't have to program the audio itself but just stream the cd audio.
Right. Problem being was how many people had the CD accessory? Honestly until recently, I didn't even know this was an arcade game. I only played the TG-16 ver. Back then, I thought the music was some of the best on the system.
contra in a ninja video game. so much action going on at once, so many explosions. awesome game. 13:58 the designers should have added lightning to the background from the clouds. would have looked so much better. a crescent moon would also have helped.
This is the ONLY game you have to play upside down on stage 4. The last stage almost impossible!!! That’s why I preferred old game. Screw, Clash Royale, Clash of Clan, MOBA games, etc...
You show very good skill level but quite inefficient in many parts due to bad choice/use of weapons. Also, invulnerability cheating doesn't add anything good, mate. Someone pointed 14:14 but there are other obvious death situations.
Bit safe going swords only, use the bomb weapon and you finish the axe boss (04:40) in the woods in 5-6 seconds instead of a full minute, same goes for the boss with the big sword.

the game is FUN and easy, a REAL arcade experience. no frustration. awesome music, ZERO slowdown, and so many upgrade options.
Beni Rodriguez I want to own a arcade cab and have this baby on there for sure haha
scir 91 oh its frustrating, in a dark souls kind of way... But it can definitely be cheap.
@@Video-Games-Are-Fun easy? You must have adjusted the settings for that!
amazing how the guys from irem arcade days would later do metal slug 1 to 3 before fading into obscurity
RawbThatPunk They made Metal Slug in-house at SNK? Explains a lot.

So that's how you survive that long drop to the last boss. That part always keeps getting me back in the day. couldn't complete the game because of it.
Stage 2 music is awesome,It's just begging to be remixed.

Play the arcade version. Its much better IMO.

Always thought some of the music was creepy loved this game so much when I was a kid spent quarters daily on it.
1:28 - So all the bad guys turn into Trix cereal when you kill them? NICE!
The Super Shinobi/Revenge of Shinobi on Megadrive took inspiration from this game,in terms of the art direction at least.Classic game.
wow looks pretty good for 1988
I love playing this game on my Turbografx-16
It's one of the first c64 games I saw at my friends house. Well worth waiting for the loading screen. Nice port.
Dear lord! You need to memorize all that for the last falling sequence? Brutal.
Ninja games are always my favorite!
Any other great MAME ninja games to recommend?
Reminds me of Legend of Kage (1985)
I really wish the PC Engine version came on CD so it could have the arcade version's soundtrack.
In all seriousness, the card sound track isn't bad.

The Two Blocks Boss... hated... him... so... much...
Nice memories though, thanks for this video.
Never knew this was an arcade game. Cool
Six Handed with Three Head Boss looks like Ashura
is Ashura
Interesting decision to stick with the katana the whole way through, almost bit you in the ass at end though.
actually made the gameplay very boring...he should have used all sorts of weapons throughout the game.
wow. i love this game on my pc engine/cgrafx. still looks and plays very good on that 8-bit system
Yeah, good run, no death, but show the other weapons, dude. Sword, sword, sword just gets boring. Mix it up.
negatigerx I agree other weapons would have been nice.

Those boss fights were quite the slog, yeah?
a buddy of mine mastered this game. Me, I didn't do so well. LOL
Pretty awesome for 1988.
Nice work. Stage 3 or 4 usually does me in.
Had this on turbo graphics 16
Surprised they used the regular boss music for the ending. I don't think that was supposed to happen. There's a full song thats supposed to play.
This game should be remaked
You show very good skill level but quite inefficient in many parts due to bad choice/use of weapons. Also, invulnerability cheating doesn't add anything good, mate. Someone pointed 14:14 but there are other obvious death situations.
very cool, but I almost think the TurboGrafix version looks better. maybe it's the video.
3:00 o.O Akuma Status Rising
Bit safe going swords only, use the bomb weapon and you finish the axe boss (04:40) in the woods in 5-6 seconds instead of a full minute, same goes for the boss with the big sword.
DAMN THIS LOOKS SICK!! Im MAMING this right NOW!!! Another kinda similar game is Ganryu BTW.
omg i searched this game for so long
Anyone wanting a to play something similar from nowadays i recommend Shinobi non grata
From the beginning, you should have used the throwing axe on the last boss, MUCH quicker.
omg i remember this
Oooh-oooh-WEEE-oooh!
Pc engine version comes pretty close to the arcade version.
One of my favorite arcade gems of the 1980s simply for its impressive graphics of its time, fast-paced gameplay, fedual Japanese dark fantasy setting, and killer soundtrack. But fuck is it hard and easily one of the most cruelly difficult arcade games I've played. 🥷

Many games on that era were the same way anyway.
thumbs down to this crap of a game, yeah.

TG16 version is better. The sound here sucks
The OST is godlike
