    It's odd that VW would name a car Taos that wasn't mountain friendly. Taos, NM in winter and after any rain needs serious 4 wheel drive vehicles for the plentiful deep ruts, mud and ice. I love Toas, NM btw... and have no trouble pronouncing it. Fun fact... did you know Taos Pueblo is one of the longest continually inhabited places in North America?

    I was told by a VW salesperson that the 4Motion models with the seven speed DSG are being pulled from the sales lot due to a pending transmission Flash update. I am assuming (hoping) the update corrects the off the line engagement problems. The salesman said once his DSG vehicles have had the update, they will be able to sell them. That was last week. So, test drive the Taos after the flash update has been installed.

    • @joeychitwood6004

      Yes. there is a software update. Drive the Jetta with the 8 speed auto - it's amazing!! SO smooth especially in ECO mode as you will not get the "grinding" sound at 1500k RPM. The gas mileage is amazing! I get usually around 45 to 46 MPG on the freeway.

    The good news about the all wheel drive version is that it should be fairly easy to tweak the power delivery since the 7 speed dual clutch transmission is programmable, as is the turbo pressure. Changing the turbo pressure would certainly change the way power is delivered, and the clunkiness of the shifting. However, we will have to wait to see if VW takes the time to do it.
    Oh, and sparkly plastic is a wonderful idea. I can't believe they haven't thought of it.

  • @CapELarry

    It's truly a shame that VW didn't just "import" the excellent 1.8L TSI from the (now discontinued) Alltrack into the Taos. I recently sold my Alltrack in order to get a larger more upright vehicle (yes - I mean SUV). I had considered the Taos until test driving one. The 1.5L TSI combined with whatever DSG programming change VW used in the Taos makes it rather uninspiring and unsatisfying. I ended up ordering a Hyundai Tucson Limited PHEV instead. However, I have no idea when it will be delivered (can you say chip shortage).

  • @OldThomMerton
    @OldThomMerton 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    TFL had the same problem with the 'disconnect' between pressing the accelerator and getting actual power in the AWD version. The combination of Turbo and DCT in the Taos would be a problem for me . . . I hope VW does some tuning on that.

  • @hfwilkesjr
    @hfwilkesjr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I’ve never driven the Taos but your pause upon acceleration sounds like the complaint I had with the 1st gen (in the US) smart car. I told the salesman that I considered the initial pause dangerous and I couldn’t consider ever purchasing a vehicle with this issue…….enter the Taos AWD 🙄. 🍻🍻🥤

    11:05 Have you seen LCD prices lately? I find it hard to believe that analog gauges are significantly cheaper than LCD dashes, and feel that manufacturers are probably just throwing in analog gauges to "sour the milk" of the cheap ones to make more differentiation with their higher end models. We used to see that with manual vs electric windows, where it turned out there was really almost no cost savings with manual windows, but they put them in anyway to base trims as a punishment for not upgrading to the "luxury" trim.

    Seems your feelings on the dual clutch are pretty much on par with any other “mountain region” reviewers I’ve watched with the Taos. Even a CVT will apparently perform better off-road (though probably not by a huge amount). Yes, that same CVT everyone seems to hate lol.

      A little better fuel efficiency is about it. Not worth it for the clunkiness of low speed driving. Also rolls like a manual when starting on an uphill. Most of the benefits go to the manufacturer as they are cheaper to produce.

    I've owned three VAG products with their old/familiar 6-speed DSG, and each was lurchy, audibly rattly at neighborhood speeds, and inconsistent with most light throttle shifts. Everyday low speed traffic conditions were a mess of noises and having my head shaken back-and-forth by unpredictable power delivery and unsatisfactory shifts. Micah is right: Not enough "slip" to allow smooth/predictable power delivery.

The golf was so so much better for less money. The price is almost so high that you could step up to a base Audi Q3 for a few grand more and be so much happier. Power is horrible. And VW can make fantastic dual clutch gearboxes, but this doesn’t sound like a good one. I have one in my Audi A4 and it’s great.

    This is a VW enthusiasts vehicle. For brand loyalists. Why are you even driving this car? It's beyond your skill level.

      Whew. There's a lot to unpack here. So tell me, what driving skills were we missing that would've helped us appreciate the Taos's crazy delayed power delivery and clunky transmission? Also, why would those traits appeal to VW enthusiasts and brand loyalists?

    My take-away -- the overweight nut between the driver's seat and steering wheel explains much of the sluggishness.

    {Personally, I hate these SUV 'crossovers.'} They all look the same. Either be an SUV or a car. But not both.
