  • Thanks to my day job at Kelley Blue Book, I drive and review lots of cars. This new 2022 Chevrolet Traverse is one of them. The Chevrolet Traverse is a midsize 3-row SUV that competes with the Kia Telluride, Toyota Highlander, and Subaru Ascent. In this video, we drive the Chevrolet Traverse to review its positives and negatives from a family perspective.

    We lost our 2013 Traverse to a drunk driver, all walking away with only bumps and bruises (3 kids with youngest 6 months old at the time). Our 2019 Traverse now has 94k miles and has performed flawlessly, easily getting over 27 mpg on road trips. Once they introduce the electric version, we will consider getting a new one (assuming someone else does not take it out). Until then, we will keep our super reliable, spacious Traverse.

    Rented one when I went skiing at Salt Lake City. Honestly, I am deeply impressed with the car. It had more than enough room (also thanks to the captain seats in the second row) to haul a bunch of ski gear, the actual skis themselves in their "Come at me, TSA bro" container along with suitcases. As far as family SUVs go, this one is phenomenal.

    Pleasantly surprised to see a Traverse review. My wife and I have a '15 LT from new. We don't have kids, but it's been great to haul stuff, dog, parents. It's great at hiking trailheads, with tons of space to get changed after a long hike day. We even camped inside it a few nights in Vermont. 5k tow rating is good for a small travel trailer. Steering is numb, but handling is competent. Does not drive big. After 85k, it's been pretty reliable, but is heavy and eats brakes. Traverse was not the car we "wanted", but we took a chance and like it.

      We were originally convinced we'd be buying a '23 Pilot . But ended up with Traverse . It's great and IMO fun to drive. Can easily spin all 4 wheels without trying hard. That may not be fun for some. 😉

    We shopped this against a Telluride a year and a half ago. Three things that sold me on Traverse were the 3rd row had more leg room, Traverse had more pickup (power) and the Telluride was literally twice the price. Tellurides were going for 7k over sticker (50k then, even before the current craziness), picked up a used off lease 2018 Traverse for 25k. Year and a half later and still happy with our decision. It's not sexy like the Kia but I don't have a heart attack everytime the kids spill their goldfish either.

      The telluride and kia just look weird and funky. And they're just not as roomy as the traverse. Best bang for the buck would be the 2nd gen traverse.

    These always do poorly in comparison tests, but when I drove them the Traverse came out on top. It's just so much more spacious and comfortable. Yeah it's a bit dull but at least it's handsome and not ugly like a Highlander. Still doesn't compare to a minivan, but if you need the towing, it's the next best thing.

      We bought a Chevy Traverse because it checked all of the boxes. We were surprised we bought a Chevy Product because Chevy was not even on our radar. We accidentally looked at one a the Minneapolis car show and it caught our eye. After adding it to the competition and also availability we saw no reason not to buy it.
      It’s a better product than we expected.

    LT cloth also includes heated front seats but not heated steering. First world problems.😂
    Towing package is a surprise, reasonably priced at $650, which includes hitch view.
    Those are the only upgrades we have on our 2023.
    I don't see how the reviewer can go along with 310 ponies under you and say this is not fun to drive!
    We opted to stick with the 18" wheels for comfort over handling, but the vehicle still seems responsive for its size.
    We also like the boxy tough truck like appearance of the front end. The redesign in 2022 was nice.

    I have the 2018 awd traverse. I love the bodystyle. To me, they just look much nicer and sportier. One zonk I have with this 2nd gen traverse is the under torque. The power is plenty for everyday driving. As for all the newer ones after the 2018, they just kind of went sideway, making it look funky and just didn't look right for me. I cover all those gloss black interior with carbon fiber trim on mine so it look much nicer and more premium feel to it.

    For the price it's crazy that you're getting an NA V6 with tons of power, a competent torque converter transmission, and a ludicrous amount of cargo space. I've driven a relatives quite a few times and I'm always surprised how nimble it feels cornering at speed for being a big, heavy, fwd-biased vehicle. However, things really fall apart when it comes to material quality and general ride quality. The leather trimmed dash has more padding than the door armrests or center armrest, tons of hard plastic, the sun visors feel like cardboard, the volume knob feels like it'll pop off if you turn it too hard. The suspension also feels confident over a well paved road, but the second you're on any vaguely unmaintained surface the ride is very loud and harsh, highway wind noise is also sub-par. I believe the 7-inch screen doesn't have the banana nook and the upgraded bose system is definitely above average when it comes to "high end" sound in a family suv.

    • @plmn93
      @plmn93 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it's all about the size. Interestingly we drove nearly all the midsize SUVs and found that when it came to frost heaved potholed city roads and washboard gravel roads, the Traverse was hands down the most composed and comfortable. The interior is dated but it's intuitive and works well. Personally I don't get the obsession some people have with "soft touch" plastic, it's less durable and I have never felt a desire to caress it.

    • @ginakerry2588
      @ginakerry2588 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I do like that the visors can be extended longer. Many vehicles don't provide that.
      The vehicle seems to ride and handle best with 18" wheels IMO.
      The 20" wheels stiffen it up a bit too much for me. Plus are prone to damage over wintry potholes.

    I think it looks good on the outside truly, but chevy had always struggled to me to make an interior that is of high quality and good looking and feeling materials. I would pick a pilot over this in a heartbeat. Yes the Telluride is nicer in and out and so is the pallisade. All are higher quality in and out in my opinion. It’s not like the pilot is luxurious inside. Plenty of cheap plastic as well. This is roomier, at least. The pilot has a problematic 9 speed, also. I’d skip the pilot until the next generation. They are about equal except this is roomier by way of being larger. It’s like a minivan without the sliding door and it has a double sunroof. I’d pick this over the pilot for family duty.

      This generation of pilot has been lousy since it’s introduction combined with atypical of a Honda poor to average reliability and picking that dated product over the rest of the field is not commendable. @@markleckband4495 Atypical to who? I'm on my second honda at 7 years each with no issues whatsoever. You cannot speak to Honda's reliability issues while defending a Chevy🤣 That's laughable at best! Every manufacturer on earth has had their issues but brand vs brand its not even in the same ball park. I get the pilot being somewhat dated, but similar to toyota it's how they do things and literally the secret to their reputation as an extremely durable and reliable brand. Chevy is always changing their technology and products to stay on top of the tech game and incidentally has a reputation for not being the most high quality or dependable brand. Good luck with the Traverse, I'll stick with my Honda!

      @@gabevillarreal96 Stop fanboying. A Honda of 5 generations ago has NOTHING to do with its products today. Honda has objectively gone way down hill in terms of product quality and reliability. From its automatic transmissions to the EarthDreams engine issues… it no longer tops reliability lists anywhere in the world. While Chevy doesn’t either, it has only improved in quality in the last few years, narrowing that gap, and the price of a Chevy continues to be significantly lower than that of a Honda. Speaking of Traverses specifically, they rate higher on reliability than Pilots, in surveys.
      While no one out there will argue that a Civic was better than a Cruze, the Traverse IS better than a Pilot. That doesn’t mean you are wrong for liking a Pilot (like what you want), but it does mean you need to grow up and learn to look at things a but impartially (objectively at least), and accept thar things change, and blind loyalty isn’t intelligent.

    One thing to note regarding the LATCH hooks for child seats - they are only rated for a max of 65lbs (or an average child weight of 40lbs.) So, if you've got a 45lb child who hasn't transitioned to a booster seat, you MUST use the seatbelt.
    In your situation, using a booster seat, the clips are only holding the weight of the seat, the seatbelt is securing your lovely daughter.

    Another great, and fun review. A factor for me, which is rarely ever included in car reviews, is whether it's produced by an American company or built by employees who are respected or have the right to be organized and represented by a union. Generally, GM vehicles are mostly produced in America (I know there are exceptions and foreign-made parts), supporting American jobs, with their employees and their family's interests being represented by a union, United Auto Workers. For this reason, I give weight to GM, Ford and Chrysler when deciding on purchasing a new car.
