    ⚠⚠Thanks to @ChessatheCalico and @Skitzobunnie who both called out that the stability information I used is incorrect. Cobblestone and Concrete have the same stability now, just different health, so you could build this with cobble if you wanted to (due to the low health it might not be a good idea, but it's not going to fall down due to stability issues!)

    This is awesome. After scouring through every block combination possible to use for a zombie pit I made, those tiny pillars to use for pathing are all i needed this wnole time. And while i do want to build this entire thing, i try my best not to use full builds from TH-cam. You've definitely earnt my sub none the less!

    I did a similar build recently with a 3x3 fighting hole and used mollys every time the puppies and kittens got piled up. This was so cheap it was laughable at first, but after rads showed up I has so shift to explosives. Also a web of electric fences for the fall is hilarious but hard on those potato PCs. Side note: If you put the tiny half poles in staggered patterns on the walls you get to play Zombie Plinko!!

    • @CautiousPancake
      @CautiousPancake  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Haha yeah the fences are brutal, although I think I read last night the latest exp release has an improvement for fences. I don't know how effective it is though.

    I was excited to build this in non-creative. It took a considerable amount of work, but it works alright.
    The biggest issues that I am running into is I'm not 100% certain on the placement of the poles on the wall of the hole. I rotated them until the pole was horizontal, at the top of the block, and placed them on the level above the lower ring support. Yet zombies seemed confused, and just hung around the upper edge, sometimes hitting on the edge, sometimes knocking each other into the pit, but that seemed to be the only way they'd end up down below. I ended up, out of frustration, putting more of those poles around the inside of the pit, just above the lower support. I'm not sure if there is a maximum those poles can be from the upper lip before zombies don't see them as a viable path or not. I was even considering zigzagging the poles down the entire wall to see if that might help.
    When we initiated a blood moon, it got chaotic fast, with zombies trying to leap onto the top of our suspended base, eventually breaking a hole through the concrete in places. Unfortunately for us, we'd also maxed out the blood moon horde to 64 and set days to 120 minutes, so that was a slog.
    When we went down to clean things up after, that's where things were interesting too. They'd knocked down the steel door we placed at the bottom, and beyond that, started tunnelling off in a random direction. And a lot of the ladder was destroyed, but halfway up, opposite the ladder, someone had started tunnelling back towards the pit, but below the level of our suspended base. Was very curious.
    And something else we noticed during the horde night is that it almost appears there can only be so many loot bags on the ground... we were watching them disappear from above, even though they'd only been around for a couple minutes. Again, with a 64-size horde, things were fast and furious, so the drops were plentiful. So best we can figure, only so many hang around before the oldest ones get despawned. Frustrating, since no way we're going down there mid-horde to pick them up. I mean, I fell through the hole once, and didn't last long. :D
    Curious if you might have any suggestions regarding some of the issues we ran into though.

    Thank you for the time and effort to provide this video. I have built this base and used it on two horde nights. What I am seeing is when I am down inside dropping pipe bombs, zombies will jump across to the force field blocks and up to the top before trying to come down the hatch. If I stay up on top, they don't jump across and just fall into the pit. Works great until getting hit with cop spit, vultures and the occasional turret blast that forces me to retreat back into the base for health regen. I just rewatched this build for at least the 10th time and did notice my side poles are not done the same. I used poles on every block, 9 blocks down to create a path instead of dropping a pole on the 9th block. My error and I will fix it before the next horde. I am hopeful this will stop them from jumping across. I am considering using a different type of forcefield block to create a thin path that I can walk across to access the base, and then a ladder up to the top. This should prevent them from somehow using the forcefield blocks and allow for them to tumble into the pit.

    • @CautiousPancake
      @CautiousPancake  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! A few people (as I expected) also don't like the invisible supports - and one of the great suggestions (I think it was Oktokolo) was to use wedge slides - the wedge narrow series with the pointy up top will force the zombies to slide off if they try and run over it, and would be a good option to use to stop the zombies getting to the main pillar section. You could use most of the zombie droppers as well - if you want to see the options for those - this should be useful: th-cam.com/video/lvAnz-dUYJ0/w-d-xo.html

I attached mine to the side of a trader POI that way I can utilize the indestructible blocks as my support laterally. Just food for thought for you, it may spark another base design idea. I might be misunderstanding, but I'm attempting this build right now beside a trader and while I can destroy blocks up to 3 tiles away from a trader fence, I can only build 5 blocks away, so I think that means Z's can destroy that 2-block difference from bedrock to surface. Although they wouldn't be able to destroy anything further than that in the trader's direction. Is this different since your build from 2 years ago and is no longer a good idea?

      Don't use any torches for lighting or candles - only use two things at once - like only use a single campfire with a single forge. Don't mine any of the metallic ores nearby those will attract screamers. Keep crouched when you're inside - just opening and closing storage crates can attract them.
      Click F1
      Type dm
      click F8 two times.
      It'll show you the heat of the chunk you're in. When it gets to 100%, you'll get screamers.

      I don't know if this will work with the current build of the game, but I had a strategy that I used to use.
      I would build a small elevated "mini-horde" base consisting of mostly a single lane with some blocks I could melee through. I would place this a little ways away from my base, but well within viewing distance. Because of the small footprint of this mini-base, I never had any issues with it being targeted during horde nights.
      Then I would put around 50-100 torches on some poles that were part of that structure. The idea was a dedicated "hot spot" that would bring the screamers there. I would often find them circling around on the ground below the torches. The downside of this idea is that it will create more screamers. The upside is that it directs them to a certain spot. (If it still works in the current build.)
      Depending on my mood, I could either snipe screamers from my base or run over there and jump on the mini-base for some extra xp.

    Interesting principle basic idea behind that "floating" construction. You might as well use ordinary visible blocks which the zombie AI "doesn't like" as path, but can be repaired if touched by zombies. You may as well use vertical stacks of them to give the base a much higher stability.
    The vertical distance from the ground not only affects spitting of cops, but also the tendency of zombies spreading out versus concentrating in the middle. The lower you set your fighting platform, the more the zombies will spread out. When higher than the spit range, the zombies seem to only just stack at the exact center below your feet.

    • @CautiousPancake
      @CautiousPancake  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      With the invisible blocks from the side they don't really get hit as the zombies don't swing there. From the bottom they do get hit in the scrum underneath, I found that out in the original test video, since I'd thought originally that invisible blocks wouldn't get any damage except for explosions, but that wasn't the case!
      Interesting observation on the zombie spread, something to look into!

    Hey great video and amazing base, I'm having a bit of a problem tho. I'm on 1.1 (b14) and some zombies started digging through the ground surrounding the base to get closer to me instead of using the poles to fall down. They still mostly do, but as soon as one or two zombies dug a path downwards most of them use that instead of falling off the poles. The base is still kinda working as intended, but the digging can end up at one of the supporting railings and that could become a problem over time. Not sure if they changed the pathfinding or if my base is too high up (it starts at elevation 62), but thought I might just let you know in case someone runs into the same problem

    • @quyt2gaming

      Yes, zombie AI changed the path finding 1 or 2 months ago. There was a video about Simple > Advanced > Expert defense base building by "Jawoodle" talk about it. Some simple > advanced base need to maintaince and highly upgrade the design to CONTROL new zombie AI path finding (It's still the same but more upgrading). About this video, it's only about time for zombies to dig a path around your hole and try to climb up. This is good base for early mid game, but the end game is really really horrible to maintance a base and secure all the path zombies dug.

    Important stability correction, cobblestone and concrete have the same mass & support ratings(10 & 120) with only a difference in health(1500 & 5000). So while I wouldn't recommend cobblestone for something like this due to the significantly lower health, it technically will hold up just as well as concrete does until blocks start breaking. Steel on the other hand has a weight of 20 with a support of 300 so you can significantly improve stability by using it for the blocks lining the shaft that are connected to bedrock at the drawback of that stability degrading much faster as the blocks below them get disconnected from bedrock.

    Just had my first horde night with this build, but all the zombies wanted to break down my secret side doors that lead down into the pit, and hardly any of them dropped in. I placed those "pillar 0.025m 1/2 side centered" blocks around the inside (two on each face of the pit) near the top for them to jump down to but none of them saw it. 13:41 doesn't mention any distances from the surface so I assumed they could go mostly anywhere as long as they were near-ish to the top. Is that incorrect?
    I had to make some changes to my build also, which might be the cause. I had to start at a depth of 35-ish instead of ~40, but I still counted 32 blocks up like you show in the video. I ended up making the survivor room taller to compensate. Would this have caused the issue, maybe? Does my character need to be vertically deeper in the pit for the zombies to want to fall in?

      I think you've called it correctly and you're too close to the top. I'd try dropping your floor down from 32 blocks away to 30 blocks away, then give it a test with some daytime zombies if you've got any nearby. At that range you should still avoid most cop spit, maybe one here and there when the zombies are stacked 3 or 4 high and a cop happens to be on the top of the stack.
      For the poles - yes it doesn't matter how far down, although I'd go for 7 or 8 blocks. 10 or more I think they don't see it as a path (from KZ's video) and if it's too close to the top you'll get more landing on the half pole than you want.
      Sounds like you're pretty close though!

      They won't make everything underneath it invisible no, and if you're standing on a normal floor under a forcefield roof, they will still try and get to you via a different path. Also, forcefield blocks only "hide" from the zombie pathing if there's a 3 block gap underneath them, and an alternate path to get to you, if you don't do that the pathing will go weird.

    Could you have "paths" with your patented droppers? like half plates or even a staggered pillar system? I switch between the half plates and making a path of .05 pillar centered and .05 half pillar centered, placed vertically kind of like the supports for the your first infinity horde base. The zombies can run across them if they are the same height, but making them drop to the half pillar causes them to fall every time. I did that in my last Darkness Falls base because you do not want anything near you on horde night.

    • @CautiousPancake
      @CautiousPancake  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, if you wanted to have a more direct path in, or use droppers that make the base less "floating in space" then you could absolutely use droppers. You'd just need to also make sure that you had a backup combat area in case too many zombies push at once - as that can sometimes get them across.

    If you want to do it without force fields and invisible supports, you can use wedge slides doubling as zombie paths and support. You could even line the pit with wedge slides and be able to slide down yourself after horde night and climb up again after cleanup.

    About the zombies vanishing. I suspect they are suffering the same bug founded early release: players downing ladders and dying by jump in the end. I have founded another related bug: my eletrified pit is a steel double floor, full block below and 3/4 on top of it so I can repair it after horde. But, sometimes zombies jumping right into the tiny vain they just get stucked in the block. That's why I think there is some sort of problem with "free fall" and you/zombies could die, get stuck or just vanishing.

      Essentially there's no path. If you put the ladder back up starting on the 3rd block from the ground, the zombies can't make the jump so they don't see it as a path. I ask this because the location I built this base had a pretty wild elevation of 70+ so I had to dig a long long way down and the build itself is fairly deep into the hole from the 32 blocks up from bedrock.. I'll be able to easily add multiple floors in this base just due to how long it is so I'm wondering if I can sit in the middle/bottom rather than sit on the roof or near it during the night

    Hi there, i have rebuilt this base but i have the problem that zombies always attack the door an climb up the ladder. I also had 6 smg turrets on top and the vultures destroy the top every time. Any idea how to fix that? Thanks

    • @Frozty
      @Frozty 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Heya! Make sure your ladder stops 2 blocks above the ground. I also had that problem - when I broke the bottom 2, the zombies no longer see it as a path and clump up like they should. As for vultures, 4 turrets at each corner should be way more that sufficient to kill them. I just make sure to position them on all 4 corners, facing in towards the middle. That way they actually cover the top of the base and each other. If they're facing all out from the base, anything that gets passed them is free to whack away at the top.

      Good question, but thankfully no - loot bags don't take damage from your explosions. The only thing is to watch out for them despawning, the default timer is 20mins from memory. Mods exist if your on PC and want to make it longer.

      Raise the ladder two blocks off the bottom so you have to jump up to it, the zombies won't do that jump and they won't see it as a path.

    I want to test this out in our actual server. But it seems most, if not all, traders are on elevation of 35+ only. All the traders I went to, from forest, to snow, to burnt, to wasteland are on 35+ elevation. I still haven't found the one in the desert but I assume it is still only on 35+. I prefer to build beside the trader.
    How tall the tower can be at that elevation?

    • @CautiousPancake
      @CautiousPancake  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you want to build there, you can either go with most of the base above the ground level, or reduce the distance of the gap, and potentially get a bit of cop spit when they stack up.
      Bedrock is +1 usually, so the base bottom will be +33, leaving only 2 blocks between that and the ground level. I'm not sure if that's enough to make them want to drop down. You could dig the pit and try and test it though, with a wood frame setup maybe before locking it in - just doing it with regular zombies.
      Otherwise you could go with a base 30 blocks away rather than 32 - then you'll be 4 blocks down and they should want to drop, just might get a bit of spit when a cop is the 3rd or 4th zombie high on the stack.

    • @espiya5557
      @espiya5557 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @CautiousPancake I see. So the base will be almost non-existent then. Just a platform, huh? How about making an artificial mound? Increasing the height by 5-10 but it will cost a ton of concrete. Maybe hollowing out the pit would provide at least 50% of the required materials

    • @CautiousPancake
      @CautiousPancake  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@espiya5557 Sorry, I meant to say you can have the tower go well up if you want - I didn't since so much was below ground level in the pit, but if you've only got a few blocks to work with then make sure your fighting area is below ground level, but crafting and other bits can be higher. Just check the pathing when your up above them to make sure they still want to go into the pit. They should, but I've not tested that recently.

    I ended up doing a similar base but used wedges for support. They just fall down and hang in center. To avoid cop spit I put water in the pit 3 blocks high. I was using explosive arrows but I think I’ll put a few dart traps on the bottom of my base pointing down the center to eliminate the mobs. :)

      The rings of cement you embed in the sides. They're digging down through the ground to get to them. Ground level where I built is 72 elevation, have I made it too high?

    • @CautiousPancake
      @CautiousPancake  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@philkeeling88 that's possible that it's too high. How far below the ground level are you - if you're waaaay down and 32 blocks off bedrock, then yeah they may see digging as the better option to try and get to you :( You could try a stair way down outside the main pit, in a side pit, and take that down to 42 blocks or so, then have that come out into the wall of the main pit and see if they want to walk off the side then? (edit - that's just me throwing an idea out there - not sure if it would work!)

      Just take out the bottom two blocks of the ladder and it'll be fine! Two empty blocks then the ladder - doing that allows you to jump up, but the zombies won't see it as a path!
