But I realized as I reviewed this video that I did not understand why, towards the end when you darkened the water via the object selection and blur, you had to click on th plus to add the color grading tool. Just before, using select sky, it was not necessary to click the plus tool. My question then, is what is the difference between these two selection approaches? Thank you

Note: TK8 will NOT work in any version of Photoshop older than Photoshop 2021. You only need one copy but it will not work in your Mac running Photoshop CS6 but it will work in your Windows running PS 2022.

  • @rlfisher
    @rlfisher 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You practical techniques are so easy to follow. When you used the dodge and burn tools on the mountain, why didn't the brush color change (it stayed black)? On the last part, why did you have to "+" on the color grading tool, when you haven't had to previously?

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The brush Color didn’t change because the dodge and burn tools are not brushes and work differently than brushes do. I was using the dodge tool on the mountain to make the lighter gray areas white without effecting the black tones outside of the mountain . I was using the burn tool to make the darker gray areas outside of the mountain turn black without effecting the white areas inside of the mountain. In answer to your 2nd question : If you have a selection loaded and click on the Color Grading Tool Icon, the Color Grading Tool (which is a Curves Adjustment Layer) will not be applied until you click the “+”. When you are outputting a Mask to a Color Grading Tool you don’t have to click the “+”.

      Good Question. When you Output a Mask created in the TK8 Multi-Mask Panel to a Color Grading Tool you won't need to use the + sign. However, if you want to apply a Selection to a Color Grading Tool you will need to use the + sign...

  • @thomasford388

    Dave, I am having difficulty understanding the Intersect action. For some reason I have not idea what Intersect means. Can you please explain? I don't understand it in this tutorial, nor did I understand it in your tutorials on ACR Masking.

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At this point I only use Intersections with selections and that is what I will try to explain. Intersect takes the area that is selected and combines it with another selected area. For instance, if you have a plain selection (made with a Lasso Tool or any Photoshop Selection Tool) and intersect it with a Lights 1 Mask you will now see the Lasso Selection filled with a Lights 1 Mask... If you take that same Lasso Selection Tool and select a different area of your image and Intersect it with a Darks 4 Mask (Using the Mask Calculator in the TK8 Multi-Mask Panel) and Click = you will see the Darks 4 Mask inside of the Lasso Selection (I am referring to the = found in the TK8 Mask Calculator). I hope this makes sense. Watch the video again especially the part where I use the Marquee Selection Tool and Intersect the Selected area with a Zone Mask (Selecting the Dark Sand). You will see that Zone shows up inside the Marquee Selection.

    • @TonyKuyper
      @TonyKuyper 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      "Intersection" is represented by the "X" or "times" mathematical operator because it is a multiplication calculation. In other words, intersection with the Mask Calculator multiplies the pixel values of two masks together to create a new "calculated"l mask. In Dave's examples, one of the masks is usually made up of pure white (or nearly pure white) pixels for selected areas and pure black (or nearly pure black) pixels for non-selected areas. For example, the Marquee tool always produces a mask that is only black and white. There are no gray values. This makes the multiplication operation (intersection) easy because white pixels have a value of "1" and black pixels have a value of "0" (zero). Anything multiplied by zero equals zero, and anything multiplied by one equals the other number in the operation. So, if one mask is pure white and pure black, the result of multiplying (intersecting) it with another mask can easily be predicted. The back pixels remain black and the white pixels take on the value of the other mask by which it is multiplied.
      This is best seen in this video in the flamingo image example where the water (pure white) is intersected with the Zone mask. After the intersection calculation, the black area (the flamingo) remains black in the new "calculated" mask and the white area (the water) looks like the other mask (the Zone mask).
      This can also be seen when Dave intersects the sky in the mountain image (the Sky selection is mostly pure white) with a Midtones-2 mask. The black (non-sky areas) remain black in the "calculated" mask and the white Sky looks like the Midtones-2 mask in the "calculated" mask. There are some gray tones in the Sky selection that will multiply out differently, but it won't have a significant effect in the final "calculated" mask.
      So, including a mask that is composed almost entirely of pure black and pure wait makes an intersection calculation quite predictable since white = 1 and black = 0 in the black and white mask. Things get a lot more complicated when multiplying things like Luminosity masks with each other. With these masks, there maybe be no 0 and 1 values. Instead, the various gray pixels would have values between 0 and 1, like 0.5 and 0.25. The multiplication principle still holds when intersecting these masks, but it's much harder to multiply values between 0 and 1 together in your head and predict the results. The one thing that is predictable is that the "calculated" mask will always appear darker. For example, 0.5 * 0.5 = 0.25. This means that pixels that are 50% selected (brightness value = 0.5) in both masks would only be 25% selected (brightness value = 0.25) in the "calculated" mask if these two masks were intersected with each other.
      Bottom line is that intersection is much easier to understand if you have one mask that is nearly pure black and pure white. This makes it entirely predictable what the "calculated" mask will look like.

      Thanks AlphaT and yes, much more. Every image is different and has it's own particular ways of working with the TK8 Multi-mask panel. I am building off of past videos and there is overlap, but this video was centered on different ways of making selections. The very first way I showed to select the Flamingo was done with the TK8 Multi-Mask Panel alone. I have never shown this technique before...

  • @pixeldoc7119
    @pixeldoc7119 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dave: Could you explain your determination with this statement? With the second picture (mountain/sand), you state that you want to increase the contrast between the foreground orangish grass and the dark underlying sand by DARKENING the bright grass. You then go on to select the grass and indeed do darken it, but thereby REDUCING the contrast with the sand. And indeed, when you’re done there is LESS contrast here; thus my confusion! Was this your intent? Or was this simply to demonstrate how to select the grass? Personally, I think the photo looked better without this intervention.

      My thought was, I lightened the sand and the grass was already light so by bringing down the lightness of the grass I would be increasing the contrast between the sand and the grass.

      I am trying in my mind to remember this video and what I did but I think you are right. You need to click the + on the Color Grading Tool to add it to a layer. If you make a selection with any of the Photoshop Selection Tools and Click the + to add a Color Grading Tool the Selection will be applied to the Mask of the Color Grading Tool.
