As they show quite a bit on Bar Rescue, employees/family members drinking for free can sink these establishments pretty quick and is a huge money sink that most owners don't catch. Could be several thousand dollars a month in some cases of them just consuming and giving free alcohol to their buddies. Hard to stay afloat if your food sucks and your deadbeat family members are drinking on your dime.

Average is bad. It means you can just make better at home. If you're spending dining-out prices you want something above average, something a lot better than what you can make.
Givwn the number of restaraunt that are unclean or handle food dangerously then average is an insult. There are reasons most restaurants dont survive the first couple years. Food safety is immensely important and means constant cleaning and upkeep of equipment. Casual owners quickly fail to keep these standards.

I feel like with the decor Gordon was setting them up to be able to run as "tourist tax" priced beach restaurant during the summer and close in the winter for event rentals and they just didn't get it. So many northeastern beach front places have limited hours (or even fully close to the public) in the winter and make all of their money through off-season weddings/parties.
I haven’t watched this or read any comments but when I watched this particular episode, I always thought she was cheating. Let’s see if my radar was correct or whether it needs tuning. Edit: After watching, I still think she was.

A restaurant owner I’m friends with makes $3.5 million a year amongst his 5-7 restaurants (not all are always operating). His places are closed Jan & Feb, he makes like $2.7 million of his money May-July and the last few months is mostly just making enough to cover expenses
i felt bad for the owner who was the head chef he seem like a good guy trying to make things better but nobody behind him to back him up in support and his wife showed she didn't care for her husband just cared about spending his money probably messing around on her husband smh she would not be a team player with her husband to keep the busy going but she did act like she did in the end of the ep. because she was on the show acting and her brother was another big reason why they lost that restaurant smh

Not necessarily. I make really good blueberry and cheesy scones that are good with just butter on them. I use a Mary Berry ( she's english) recipie(sp?).
This is the one episode where I didn’t like the makeover. They’re on the boardwalk/near the beach. The silly, tacky tiki decor wasn’t the problem. Not every place needs to be 4 star fancy. They could have just fixed the food, cleaned the place and got rid of the “psychic”.

So I get where they're coming from with the style and food choices. You don't open a place like that, with that type of feel, in a location like that to do a fine dining experience. You're selling a feel and experience to tourists and youre trying to give them the same type of experience ypu emjoyed from that area, especially if the restaurant is named after a parent. Outside of the completely broken marriage and the husband being taken advantage of in all this, the business had some of the basics wrong and needed some course corrections. Drastically changing the menu and feel of the place would have likely killed a place that relies on tourists to keep it afloat. The people who vacation in these areas love consistency and following tradition in their visits. Getting their financials and hygiene in order, and just upgrading their quality and portion control in their food offerings would have likely been enough to keep them going. Forcing them to shut down during the winter/off-season months like other businesses in areas like that do would have likely helped too. As someone who vacations in a New England beach town annually, I know I wouldn't hit up a place that changed that drastically again, that's not the experience I would be looking for.

Scones ARE delicious if you have them with jam and cream. Without those, they can be anything from hard and tasteless, to crumbly and quite pleasant.
