And what you need to remember is that people generally don't believe in Kramnik's accusations on Hikaru and Daniel. But at the time, "those evidence of Hans' cheating" were presented in the mainstream media and everyone was accusing him. And even then, Hikaru unlike Magnus kept on pressing on the gas pedal and stir up the whole drama. His accusation is definitely worse and more damaging to Hans than all of Kramnik's accusation combined.
A mind that can premove a W on the first turn against high level chess players can’t comprehend the fact that not everyone is gonna have a nice opinion on you as a public figure 😂
There is so much lore to Hikaru being an asshole, that it's almost impossible to just summarize it. Worst offenses to me, 1. Copywrite striked Chessbrahs(Eric) for simply beating him in a online game and posting a side by side commentary on it. bonus- drunkenly physically attacked Eric in the front lawn of a party(Hikaru just got flopped like a fish) 2. Accusing many many players of cheating, like Andrew Tang for no reason other than beating him in blitz. He rival Kramnik is how much he accused people of cheating. 3. Stirred the pot on the Hans situation with zero evidence whatsoever. There are untold number of stories of Hikaru bullying people at chess tournaments
hikaru is like a 4chan troll that just coincidentally is one of the best players ever. if he was just IM or FM he woulda been a laughing stock in the chess community
also you had the PERFECT opportunity to make a rey enigma joke for a video literally titled "when the mask slips" you will not be as funny as technicals and you are technicals' luigi
i disagree, you are implying that he's not a laughing stock in the chess community when he absolutely is. the random viewers aren't what I mean by the chess community, I mean titled and tournament players who have known and interacted with him for many years. this isn't even a secret either, it's just that the majority of chess players are extremely non confrontational, but if you have listened to many different GMs talk a lot over the years you can occasionally catch them reveal how they feel about him...and ben finegold has straight up said as much on more than one occasion. i haven't watched this vid yet but there are endless examples of him acting despicably and even despite him being rather guarded on his stream his toxicity still leaks out from time to time. yes, he's a fantastic chess player, but that doesn't make you a good person. that doesn't make you an intelligent person. his speech pattern actually reminds me a lot our presidentelect...says a lot of words but most of it is repeating the same phrases multiple times when they they often don't mean very much the first time it is said.
He doesn't care. He literally doesn't care. He doesn't care to the point where he will copystrike the heck out of this video. That's how much he doesn't care
I get the sense Hikaru has made some strides in maturing. He's nearing 40, got married, and has generally been less toxic. You can still see he has that kind of inability to control his emotions and some borderline autistic traits in his ability to understand social situations and context. I don't think he's an awful guy though. He's just got some personality issues, and he seems to have realized that and made some improvement, even if you want to call it a mask.
Yeah, this type of video with chapters "exposing" someone has become totally overplayed. I've never seen one made over something as silly as toxicity, though. 99% of the ones I've seen are of someone being a criminal or being racist... This seems like a drama/stir the pot view farm video, inflating problems that aren't worth making a video essay over.
To be honest, there is nothing autistic about it. Those 'traits' are more like they don't read situations as well. However, Hikaru is one of the most annoying player on the board where he is able to manipulate his body language to fool his opponents and even top players admitted that. The difference is that those people don't go out and destroy people's livelihood.
Yeah but the insulting of alireza "who the fuck you think you are", "your family only cares about chess thats all they have" etc was this year if i remember correctly. So he is still going kinda nuts. I dont hate him but it really fking sucks because he has alot of power and his ego causes problems for others.
09:25 No, it wasn't sarcastic. Danny Rensch is all about PR and damage control. Hikaru is important to their brand. He was killing the Hikaru-is-having-a-beef-with-Rensch narrative by praising Hikaru's tweet. 13:36 Chessbae is not anonymous to everybody. Chesscom knows who she is. Hansen met her once in real life too. She was known to be the wife/ex-wife of a GM. Her identity was once leaked on Reddit but the post was deleted quickly.
@@swimmerboy172 There's a big difference. Sarcasm would mean they had real beef and Rensch is trying to roast him more. Inauthentic (and non-sarcastic) means Rensch wants to damage control and show no beef. I wasn't criticizing the video. He did a great job summarizing. I've been in the online chess community on all platforms for 6+ years, so I just wanted to clarify this point.
@ it would be a big difference if one of you provided 100% non-disputable evidence that your take (PR or sarcasm) was what was intended. But until that’s the case, the main point, which you both agree is that Danny was not being sincere.
It's telling of how well his astroturfing campaign worked that I, whose only real exposure to Hikaru was the 2020-21 online chess boom, looked at the title and went "Really? That guy?". Pogchamps portrayed him as a relatively clean figure of authority and respect to so many outsiders like myself. With the severe drop-off of casual chess viewership afterwards, there's a _lot_ of people like myself who don't know of the rampant censorship being done in his favour. We haven't seen many of the events in this video, and we can't judge what we can't see. Absolutely bananas coverage, fran. Thank you for this!
You have to go by your impression rather than a bias hit piece that starts off with a guy saying that he doesn't like Hikaru, followed by showing negative situations out of context. This is why propaganda is so effective.
@@amberhernandez You do know why it would be difficult to provide context if a person that a viewer doesn't know watches a long smear video? There are layers of misinformation, selective facts, and emotional manipulation. So summarizing it in a small comment would be impossible. But take just one example, the start of the video where Hikaru is playing an over the board game, grabs a queen and says, "Are you kidding?" Hikaru has had thousands of over the board chess games, but you've only seen that once. Which means something must have happened. But a person who doesn't know who Hikaru is, watching this video with a very negative tone, with the creator starting out by staying that he hates this guy, is going to assume that this is an everyday attitude when Hikaru is playing an over the board game and then thank the creator for such a great video. Then you have the disrespect speed run, where Hikaru has to play a Dr. Disrespect character, making fun of his opponents, all in good fun, and in the main he has difficult doing and is more jokie than disrespectful, if you take one of the "insult" out of context and show it to the average person who doesn't know who Hikaru is, they're going to think that he's a dick 24/7, constantly disparaging his opponent, when in reality he's doing a "Disrespect Speedrun." So that's why I said to go by your first perception, because that's going to be more accurate to the truth than the truth of what your average person is going to see in this video.
@@inlovewithi I appreciate the attempt to explain, but I really wish you'd done so without treating me like a lost cause. I didn't follow my first impression because I _want_ to learn more and challenge my own views. Please give me more to go on, and have at least some trust that I'll listen!
@@amberhernandez I've been playing online for 20 years and everything in this video is 100% spot on. if you ask any old players they'll say the same. this is the hikaru we've all known forever, and before he didn't even used to hide it.
the irony of this guy being labeled the face of chess when he's had an entire career of unsportsmanlike behavior and toxicity, and people like Ben Finegold who's dedicated their life to promoting and teaching chess to youngsters and new players being labeled as toxic.
May this vid serve as a reminder to all of us to try to be better sports. It's something i've always sttuggled with and it's always embarrassing in hindsight. It makes people not want to play with you anymore.

12:38 Fucking ChessBae. Holy shit. This video is taking me back. I can't believe an anonymous parasocial superfan has become a footnote in chess history
as they say everybody has a hikaru story he literally has had fights with all gms, organisers and officials at some point of his career as nepo said in the days of international chess club hikaru used to say pretty mean things on internet leading to fair share of physical confrontations
I see and appreciate your script writing AND editing skills bro! Insane usage of hooks and questions at the start of chapters, editing was well timed and kept me engaged in the video. Can't remember the last time I've watched something this long from start to finish. Kudos my friend
Thank you for putting in the effort to create and publish this video. I’d like to point out that no one gets away with anything, karma always catches up sooner or later.
Didn't watch most of the video, but I'm somewhat familiar with the main points brought up. He's not a great person, pretty insecure, and is not just "toxic" for competitive reasons. What I disagree with is your conclusion his skill is the only thing that makes him relevant. I just disagree with this. He gained massive following in the chess boom on twitch at the right time, people stuck around not just because he's "the best", but his commentary during games is objectively entertaining. Very few chess players can keep up that energy while playing, partially due to him winning most of the time but it's still impressive. His on the board analysis while playing is impressive, and you could argue he'd be more popular if he was funnier or had a better personality, but that's not the point you made. People often downplay others success (usually due to jealousy), by claiming it's only "x" thing that made them popular, but that's not how success is created. You're likely unaware of other factors which helped grow his popularity.
Yea I can definitely see that. I do think his commentary is still the result of his skill as a player (because he’s so good, he can provide better analysis) and if he wasn’t as good as he is, his commentary would also be much much worse.
Let’s be real-an average viewer can’t follow Hikaru’s in-game analysis or judge whether it’s good or not. His charisma and overall personality are just as important to his success as an entertainer as his chess skill. In fact, skill alone isn’t a key factor in the popularity of any chess content creator. A lot of GMs have tried making content at some point, but their videos were mostly educational and not entertaining, so they never became popular. On the other hand, the most popular guy is basically a total clown whose content is 90% entertainment and built on screaming, overreacting and exaggerating, which attracts broader audience.
hikaru's commentary is absolute garbage chess-wise, you'll never learn a single thing watching him. he understands the games, but he's completely incapable of communicating it in a way that's beneficial to anyone under GM level. compare him to naroditsky for example and you instantly understand how much more you learn from danya. what's great about him for a watcher though is that he plays A LOT every single day. there's not many streamers who play even 10% of the games he does, and none of them daily. with everybody else it's like 30 minutes blitz maybe 1-2 times a week, but you can always trust hikaru to be there playing 5h a day if you just wanna see blitz.
I’m glad you made this video. I always knew something was off about that guy. I like watching him play chess but the mask definitely slips and you get to the see the real Hikaru every now and then.
Great video! I kinda knew a lot of the drama around Hikaru and wasn't really ready to cringe for an hour straight, but as usual, your storytelling is top-notch and I couldn't click away.
0:43 "Arguably the greatest speed chess player in history" needs some clarifying as I think you mean "Arguably the greatest ONLINE speed chess player in history". He's never won a rapid or blitz world title over the board, whereas Magnus Carlsen has won 5 and 7 respectively.
I was just saying the same elsewhere. I always say that what new players don't know is the 'disrespect speedrun hikaru' is the real hikaru, the 'nice hikaru' is the act.
37:48 is hilarious because it's RIGHT AFTER he immediately admitted he had blundered back to back, so obviously when he doesn't blunder, his opponent will move slower on later moves, because the responses aren't obvious. 43:49 is hilarious because, of course Fischer didn't have 100% engine accuracy games, the information we had about efficiency, and our ability to see 10+ moves down the line, was so lacking compared to today. Fischer, as great as he was, probably always had "inaccurate" moves because the reality is, 100% accuracy isn't actually that different from 99%. Computers will see an absolute best sequence that no human would ever be able to know is best, and will call a much simpler, more immediately forceful move an "inaccuracy." If you look at the decisive games called the best ever, they frequently suffer in the engine's evaluation, with the winner's accuracy in the low to mid 90s by %. Also, winning can require piece sacrifices, and engines hate sacrifices. Then Hikaru acts like 90% games are crazy. If you play a ton of events OTB, you'll have 90% games. I haven't gotten past this section, so I don't know if it's covered, but yeah, I'm willing to bet Hikaru has plenty of 90+% games. Just not in the Candidates. 49:00 and after: of course Hikaru only mentions Fabi and Nepo, they're the ones who beat him in the Candidates before, so he's trying to delegitimize them because he is eternally salty.
I was wondering how I'd never heard about any of this. Makes sense that he was just silencing everyone lol! Great video man, very informative! I hope it doesn't get taken down lol...
Bro Arjun is literally one of the strongest players in the world right now, and even three years ago he was pretty damn good. I didnt know that Hikaru had accused people just like Kramnik who constantly gets memed on (and rightfuly so) even in Hikarus streams. I kind of liked watching him just be really good at meme openings and beat grandmasters with them, and yes as a chess player he is still amazing, but I will stear clear of his content especially given that I like Gotham better and also Danya and a bunch of other great streamers are out there. Great video man, hope it doesnt get striked.
yeah hikaru has accused easily hundreds of players and only stopped (kinda) after hans sued him. like it used to happen almost daily before FOR 20 YEARS.
The worse part about the chessbaseindia thing is that the team never intended to copyright strike hikaru's channel. They had asked him to tag them in the title and add link to the original video in the description. Hikaru's team never responed so So they asked youtube to remove the video since there hasn't been any communication whatsoever from hikaru and youtube decided to do a copyright strike in order to 'remove the video'.
As a TH-cam watcher.. I have to say well played hikaru. Everything bad about him was erased to the point I was a fan who thought that he was just a kind person
he's also very good at pretending he's not doing all these things so it tends to take a few years before new people understand who he really is. and I kinda think the new crowd who started during covid seems to be getting there, so we'll see if his popularity survives that exposure. everybody who's been around for longer (including all titled players) already knows he's a total douchebag.
Thank you for making this video from the bottom of my heart. I've been hating Hikaru since I first saw him around 2009. It's great to see that more people share my disgust.

There is so much lore to Hikaru being an asshole, that it's almost impossible to just summarize it.
Worst offenses to me,
1. Copywrite striked Chessbrahs(Eric) for simply beating him in a online game and posting a side by side commentary on it.
bonus- drunkenly physically attacked Eric in the front lawn of a party(Hikaru just got flopped like a fish)
2. Accusing many many players of cheating, like Andrew Tang for no reason other than beating him in blitz. He rival Kramnik is how much he accused people of cheating.
3. Stirred the pot on the Hans situation with zero evidence whatsoever.

Ikrrr omgg@@Sockren
i disagree, you are implying that he's not a laughing stock in the chess community when he absolutely is. the random viewers aren't what I mean by the chess community, I mean titled and tournament players who have known and interacted with him for many years. this isn't even a secret either, it's just that the majority of chess players are extremely non confrontational, but if you have listened to many different GMs talk a lot over the years you can occasionally catch them reveal how they feel about him...and ben finegold has straight up said as much on more than one occasion.
i haven't watched this vid yet but there are endless examples of him acting despicably and even despite him being rather guarded on his stream his toxicity still leaks out from time to time. yes, he's a fantastic chess player, but that doesn't make you a good person. that doesn't make you an intelligent person. his speech pattern actually reminds me a lot our presidentelect...says a lot of words but most of it is repeating the same phrases multiple times when they they often don't mean very much the first time it is said.

He is egomaniac that s it
To be honest, there is nothing autistic about it. Those 'traits' are more like they don't read situations as well. However, Hikaru is one of the most annoying player on the board where he is able to manipulate his body language to fool his opponents and even top players admitted that. The difference is that those people don't go out and destroy people's livelihood.
If this recent behaviour towards Alireza is matured, how bad has he been? 😮
I mean not even apologising later... just poor character...
Yeah but the insulting of alireza "who the fuck you think you are", "your family only cares about chess thats all they have" etc was this year if i remember correctly. So he is still going kinda nuts. I dont hate him but it really fking sucks because he has alot of power and his ego causes problems for others.
The ace attorney music makes this video so much better
09:25 No, it wasn't sarcastic. Danny Rensch is all about PR and damage control. Hikaru is important to their brand. He was killing the Hikaru-is-having-a-beef-with-Rensch narrative by praising Hikaru's tweet.
13:36 Chessbae is not anonymous to everybody. Chesscom knows who she is. Hansen met her once in real life too. She was known to be the wife/ex-wife of a GM. Her identity was once leaked on Reddit but the post was deleted quickly.
Sarcastic - inauthentic. Think the main point is what was said was not what was meant. Whether it’s PR or sarcasm, it wasn’t honest.
@@swimmerboy172
There's a big difference.
Dude, why are you so reticent to accept that your correction was incorrect?
@@inlovewithi Do you have any context to provide that would clarify the situation? I'd be interested to know what I'm missing out on.

My life is like a video game trying hard to beat the stage
My man found a gold mine, a niche network, in Chess drama. I had no idea it went this deep. Keep up the good work.
I do think his commentary is still the result of his skill as a player (because he’s so good, he can provide better analysis) and if he wasn’t as good as he is, his commentary would also be much much worse.
existing skill level + pandemic + Twitch = initial popularity = "he streams? Imma peep that" = wow he isn't a stuffy stereotypical nerd = wow he's good at chess (they don't watch anyone else} = his popularity goes up [...]
"didn't watch the video but" 💀💀
I wanted pause the video and tell you that you made an incredibly and well documented video

0:43 "Arguably the greatest speed chess player in history" needs some clarifying as I think you mean "Arguably the greatest ONLINE speed chess player in history". He's never won a rapid or blitz world title over the board, whereas Magnus Carlsen has won 5 and 7 respectively.

about time someone talks about this, i’ve been decently rated since before the boom and it’s always been like this
I was just saying the same elsewhere.
I don't care for Chess, so I'm sitting here listening to a segment about a guy I have never watched and won't ever. I'm only doing it for the algo. :P
