    Two things: gloves can save your skin if you've left your car in a hot carpark. The steering wheel can become super hot and can literally burn your hands. Even if the wheel doesn't get that hot it can be too hot to hold safely when driving. Gloves can be your friend in such situations.
    Second, choose gloves that either have a lining, or at least have the seams and stitching turned outwards because they can be very uncomfortable if they are turned inwards and will rub against your skin.

    • @X50505
      @X50505 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If it's that hot anyway, who wants to wear gloves? Put a shade screen on the windows if you must park in the hot sun and turn the AC on when you get in.
      It sounds like you're just desperate to justify their use.

      @@X50505 I have a truck so there's not that much space to store anything. I could do a shade screen but a pair of gloves in the center console is a lot more space efficient. It also is less work.

      A very good point! This is exactly why we choose to have seams facing outwards on our driving gloves, so you remain comfortable and they retain a lightweight and breathable feel.

      @@gentlemansgazette What was the reason to recommend them for "the white-knuckle intensity of racing"? Those perforated leather "driving" gloves offer no protection in the case of an incident or fire - there's a reason racing gloves exist, and it's not to look cool or classy. In fact, you would not be allowed to enter a race on any proper track in the Western world with those gloves.
      Learn your audience - sell those $200 status symbol gloves to guys who cruise in their Ferrari, but these are not "racing" gloves.

    I think of the gloves as a way to protect the alcantara and leather steering wheels in my vehicles. It helps the steering wheels stay cleaner longer and also reduce the fingerprints on the touch screen. That said, I usually use the extremely un-stylish semi-disposable cotton ones they have at the running store. I do think the traditional string back leather driving gloves look the part, however.

    I like them for practical reasons. It gets deadly cold here mid winter and if you've ever tried to drive while wearing winter gloves its really not ideal, your grip and feel of the wheel and shifter is severely reduced. They might not have the insulation of proper gloves but its still better than bare skin and I can still have proper control over the car

    Got a cheap pair for like 20 on flebay, when it's real frosty and the steering wheel stings a bit,or mostly when my hands are cracked from being around cement and mostly when hot hands swear and cement gers in the work gloves causing a slight chemical burn and the skin burns. Came out of work one day put creame on my hands to solve the pain,grabbed the wheel and instantly slipped off,gloves made the 2 hour drive home way less painful.

    Driving around in, and out of, Calcutta during the interminably long summer months and the even longer rainy seasons, I prefer to pull on either white or very light-hued cotton gloves - slip-ons sans buttons and/or zips. • @charlesmcmanus4229
      @charlesmcmanus4229 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Steering wheels used to be made out of either polished wood or metal. In order to provide better grip on those smooth surfaces (and to protect their hands if those surfaces have been sitting in the sun), drivers would wear soft gloves.
      Today, driving gloves are nearly a necessity for classic car owners who are trying to protect the vintage steering wheels from the oils and moisture of the driver’s bare hands.
      So, the “why” is: grip, protection, and style.

    I like the idea of a lighter glove for the Autumn. I'd be sold on FB driving gloves if not for two points (completely subjective) - The contrasting stitching should be less contrasty. The green pair would be well suited to navy blue contrasting stitching, and, point two, The D shaped skin gap between the cuff snaps should be smaller. The FB design is way more traditional, but doesn't seem to be cutting the cheese (for me).

    Wearing driving gloves can definitely give off snobbish vibes if the car doesn't match. If you're driving around town in an automatic sedan or EV, it's a bad look. It makes it seem like you're trying to present your car as more than it really is.
    If you're driving a manual transmission, performance car, or you're driving for extended periods (Uber, chauffeur, bus driver, road trip, etc) then they are actually practical accessories. They make sure you maintain your grip on the wheel and the gear shifter. They protect your hands from the sun, and reduce wear and sweat/oil damage to your steering wheel

    What driving gloves to rallye drivers wear? What ELSE do they wear on their job? Put some perspective on that and don't ape around with your fine off-grren nappa leather and mother of pearls.

    That's a bit too much. Don't wear driving gloves unless you're driving an old Aston Martin or Jaguar convertible in the English countryside.

    Only driving a vintage car or a Morgan or Caterham Seven justifies wearing driving gloves. Everything else is posing, sorry.

    Being a gentleman is not being pretentious. It seems like some struggle with the line between being a gentleman and being a phony. Driving gloves are unnecessary and pretentious.

      I disagree. In summer when the steering wheel is hot, driving gloves can save your hands and ensure you have secure hold on a hot steering wheel.

    I do like those gloves specially without fingers, but they are kind of douchy in a car. We have roof climate control and leather steering wheel, these are not he cars with hard plastic or metallic wheel and there is no need to rub leather against leather.

    Oh I can help everyone with this question. The answer is don’t. If you’re wearing gloves while driving and you aren’t actively driving in a nascar race…you’re doing life wrong.

    A totally useless affectation. I'm a car and racing enthusiast and don't know of any knowledgeable car guy who wears them. We wear racing gloves on the track only for safety. If you wear driving gloves, be prepared to get laughed at by other car guys.

    If you have power steering and push to start ignition, but still feel the need to wear driving gloves, then please reconsider your life choices.
