    sheesh it seems like Preston is getting a lot of flack in the comments. especially about the high waisted trousers. With my personal experience, I tried them, and fell in love with wearing them! They are extremely comfortable, and if you don't like the look of how high they are, then that can be easily midigated with a waistcoat during the colder months, wearing an untucked camp shirt in the hotter months, or by wearing a jacket.

    • @pianofry1138

    • @themoderndandy713

      High-waisted trousers have a flattering silhouette on the large majority of men. Why? Because your waistline is near your naval, your legs look elongated and your torso is shortened. This is almost always more flattering to your body than the reverse: low-waisted trousers that elongate your torso and shorten your legs, making you look weirdly top-heavy. This is part of the reason white tie makes men look so elegant - the waistline makes your legs longer, the tails make you look taller, and the fit makes you look slimmer. All excellent things! People who complain about high-waisted trousers, in my opinion, care far more about whatever happens to be in style this week than what actually looks decent.

    Definitely want to get back into the classic menswear. I took most of the summer off from it, partially due to working most days of the week. I’d wear chino style shorts, sometimes a polo or a very basic cotton dark colored t shirt and often sigh, I’d go back to my basic adidas flat sneakers. But I’ve definitely realized my low waisted dress pants really don’t suit me that well, and don’t stay on/up well. And shirts don’t have enough length to accommodate this to tuck in properly. I’m looking forward to overcoat season. I’ve also come to the realization how unflattering most jeans are for me personally.Experimenting time for this fall season.

    Shoes that aren't cared for are the worst. I've got a 35€ pair of leather derby shoes that I wear day to day (which includes walking long distances on asphalt, walking over dirt paths, sometimes walking in muddy fields, rainy weather, etc., basically anything that destroys expensive shoes in a few months). I regularly manage to scratch them up quite badly, so I go over them with matching polish and brush every few days which hides/fixes any damage very well. It's as simple as that to make sure your shoes look good, even if they are heavily abused.

    Not sure I 'd agree with all of these as sweeping universal statements. Low rise pants work for men with long legs and a short torso (just as high waisted trousers work for men with long torsos and short legs). Thin fabrics are the hallmark of Neapolitan tailoring because of their relaxed drape. This works well for men with structure (big, muscular frames) but will not work for more svelte men. So thicker, structured fabrics will certainly work for thinner men but is not a universal truth. Dull colors seems subjective. As an example, I rarely if ever see a man at a wedding with a solid navy suit with a white shirt, black shoes, and a wedding tie. It's the "standard" and yet no one seems to wear it.

    Fit trumps all. Guys, if you are starting out, go to a quality store (not a discount store) and you will find the suits worn by successful men. Pick the darkest navy blue one. The store tailor will then fit it to you for pickup and finishing try on at a later date. Pick your shirt and ties from that same upscale store. Don't shy away from the ones presented on display. next socks....no athletic logo'd socks. Solid colors that go with your new suit are your choice. Shoes should be conservative and go with your new outfit and match your new belt. If you follow these steps, this suit ensemble will be classic and in style for years. You want a successful look, not a bar hopping look.

    Minor quibbles. Shorter, slighter gentlemen look good in slimmer cuts. High waisted trousers likewise don't tend to flatter gentlemen with lower rises. Smaller collars work well on smaller cut dress shirts for shorter, thinner gentlemen with shorter sleeve lengths. These kinds of proportions were not common in the 30s and 40s, but were in the ratpack era, another golden age of gentlemen's clothing.

      I have a slightly controversial opinion on wear on dress shoes. Assuming one's shoes are well-polished, I am of the opinion that regular wear and tear on dress shoes is not a slovenly look, but instead an indication that these dress shoes have been loved and worn plenty. It's sort of the idea that ripped jeans are going for, but unlike ripped jeans, it's actually earned rather than artificial. Synthetic leather is one thing, and lack of care is another, but creases and even repaired holes don't scream slovenly to me, but instead well-traveled and not wasteful.

    • @themoderndandy713
      @themoderndandy713 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @luke5100 True, and I also think there's a distinction between worn and poorly cared for. Dress shoes need to be regularly shined, whether they're new or not. With that said, I take a bit of the King Charles approach to clothing: Mend and maintain rather than re-buy and discard, because caring for one's possessions and not being wasteful is never a bad look.

      Yes it can help. If you see something that is 10 years old and keeps its colour, you know it is of quality. But the opposite of dull isn't neon. Start out with forest green, beige, burgundy, mustard yellow, and work from there

      One thing I learned from a video on another channel is the difference in color saturation and hue in cheaper brands vs luxury brands. It can be hard to articulate without examples, but a luxury brand might have a deep and inviting woodsy green that is rich and vibrant and a bit off the usual spectrum of greens, while a cheaper version will be that same unchallenging, boring "forest green" we all associate with mail-order catalogs. The reason being that lower-grade brands focus on colors that will appeal to a very wide audience many of whom feel out of place in particularly bold, "fashion-forward" or unusual colors, while better brands can focus on smaller volume of sales at a higher price point to those who *want* to stand out.
      One good example is Preston's berry-colored cardigan in this episode. It's a vibrant, bold color that you wouldn't likely see at the men's section at Penny's, and if when you do find something in a similar color range in those places, they will often be in a subtly less saturated or eye-catching hue so as not to challenge more mainstream shoppers.

    Thank you guys for your advice.
    Here go some of my style pet peeves:
    -Fasten all your buttons of a dress jacket (except if it is a double breasted navy blazer with gold buttons)
    -White/sport socks with formal wear
    -Matching Tie and chest pocket handkerchief being of the same fabric.
    -Show skin other than that of your face, neck and hands while dressing a suit.
    -The shirt cuff covered by a longer sleeve of the suit jacket.
    -Button-down shirts with a suit.
    -Bad kept shoes (no shine, bent at the toes for absence of shoe trees, worn heels, worn shoe laces)
    -Absence of chest pocket handkerchief.
    -Dressing too small or too loose clothes.
    -Fallen buttons that were not replaced.
    -Noticeable holes on your socks.
    -Worn out edges of the collar shirt.
    -Absence of collar stays in formal shirts.
    -Mismatching patterns in a formal ensemble (Bengal stripes with thousand stripes, or squares with tattersal of the same size) .
    -Mismatching fabrics in a formal ensemble (like wool with linen, or silk with jeans).
    -A tie knot bad done.
    -A bow tie bad done or bought already done.
    -Showing dandruff on your clothes, stains, worn out signs, wrinkles.
    -To end and not bore: do not try to seem like what you really are not!

    With socks, never EVER put your socks in the dryer, it will ruin the elastic and down they go! Hang them on a rack, over a kitchen chair or just draped over a hanger bar until dry. Make sure they are fully dry...nobody wants moldy socks! You can also buy braces that connect your sock to the shirt tails. Spend some money on a maintenance kit - tape style lint brush, some tape to pick up what the brush doesn't, shoe kit, a really good iron (not a cheap one). You can also sort your closet better: suits, shirts, pants, jackets that complement each other, hung together creating "sets".. Too many men get hung up on grouping items together thereby wasting time trying to match your beige suit with a purple shirt, instead of having the correct blue shirts hanging right next to it. You can also "bookend" by putting your beige/brown/tan suits and jacket/pants combos at one end and blue suits/ jacket and pants at the other end. Place your blue (or other shirts that compliment both) in between your suits. I even go so far as to put shirts that work better with the browns closer to that end and the same with blues on the other end. Those that can go either way go in the very centre. For outerwear you can hang it just next to the suit grouping of just repeat the set up in another part of your closet, mimic the coat on the leftmost in a colour group goes best with the suit on the left in its group.The repeat for other colours that you have outer clothing in. If you have something that can't be added to any set, donate it! Your vids are the best!

    Hem length and fit --- not "collaborating" with a tailor -- would perhaps be the biggest issue that most folks need to work on (myself included). Nothing looks better or feels better than to get the fit right. And different folks can have somewhat different ideas about fit....different ideas about the casualness or formality of an ensemble that can inform the way I want something to fit me.

    • @stedmays2768
      @stedmays2768 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @luke5100 Yes, it can be challenging to find a tailor who communicates well and who seems to be the right choice for the job at hand. Also, as the customer, I need to take responsibility for communicating my desires for how the garments will fit me. All parties need to be patient during fittings---and I will often bring the type of shoes I will wear with particular outfits so that the hems will be set accordingly......this is all trickier than it seems, and most youtube fashion channels should do more to discuss in thorough detail these tricky issues.

    For points 1 and 2, unlike Preston, I have a very short neck so I like small shirt collars and do not wear a tie because of that, it's not doing me any favors. I got to be careful even with knitwear as the collar go into my jaw on some sweaters.

      Please, please, please check out the Congolese dandies known as the sapeurs. These are men who often work in oil fields during the day and don beautiful, colorful suiting styles in the evening. They're a fascinating group of men; they're as obsessed with clothing as Beau Brummell was, possibly!
      I would also recommend against the style some Black men wear of monochrome, black or brown suiting. Why? It's like a White person wearing all-beige monochrome. It sort of turns you into a blob of one color. I at least theorize that part of the reason White people tend to wear dark suits and Black people tend to wear colorful suits is to provide contrast against skin tone for that very reason. All this is to say, if you opt for a dark suit, please avoid dark shirts, as it's even harder to get away with when you have dark skin.

    So, I’ve come to the conclusion that the topic here is simply one of many “correct” or “incorrect” styles.
    Watching the video, where he discusses how others (experts?) may react to your choice of style… I was reacting the same way… to the “correct” options. Not all of them mind you, things like creases on new shirts are rather universal, but on things like the choices of colors, patterns, and styles.
    All of the “good” ties, and socks to ME, looked horrible. Many of the colors and patterns seemed ridiculous. Some of the “good” fits looked like they were ready to pop. And the straw hat at the end, I can’t imagine wearing that.
    Point being, you may indeed like those choices, but telling people they are “wrong” for not following your advice is just as wrong… at least on some of your choices.
    Just as someone from the eyewear industry might suggest a pair of glasses that puts the LENSES in front of your eyes, instead of the top of the frame, a style “expert” is fine doing the exact opposite.
    Chose your style, but if you go out dressed like this, just as many people will be snickering at you as you are at them.
    Don’t ride too high of a horse.

  • @altairjb

    I honestly found the video interesting. It's totally beyond anything I would think about when it comes to clothing. I don't think much about it at all. Yes, I am one of those overcasual people who could not care less. I don't remember last time I saw people wearing this proper, and I work with upper management at a construction company. Interesting nonetheless. A genuine question, isn't this style a little outdated? I find it a bit silly, but my ignorance in this area is something I do not shy away from. It's awesome that we are all different and that should be celebrated. Enjoyed the video.

    • @henryshawn1628
      @henryshawn1628 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I just called them outdated in a negative way I mean yes the majority of people are not worrying them anymore but that’s make them less elegant and definitely even more unique. They just come from a time work quality has been way more important than today and where everyone care about his outfit and how he looked, or at least the majority of peopledid also, I think it’s important for the overall feeling how you dress so I wouldn’t really agree with you about the other casualisation part. I see it as a pretty negative thing that evolved in our society but on the other way I definitely appreciate that you are being friendly and not trying to hate something away just because you don’t like it so I definitely wish you luck, and good night too
