@@codyferrell1896 Up until the Posey play, you were taught to block the plate to prevent the runner getting a hand in. Look at a lot of these plays, the catcher is literally sitting on home plate and there's nowhere to go but right through him, that was the best strategy to make absolutely damn sure that run wasn't scoring. With the new rule, they do essentially what you described. I remember I was taught to literally put my butt on top of the plate and brace myself, because if you can see the train on the tracks it's already too late to get off lol.
@@codyferrell1896 I think the other thing to consider is if you didn't really try to block the plate then the runner might see that and decide he can get under the tag with a feet first slide and if you can't get that glove low when you reach for the runner (and at that point it depends on your position and the angle he takes and all kinds of other variables, when/where the ball gets there etc), he probably gets his feet in. So you might avoid the pain but then your unwillingness to sacrifice the body could lead to giving up that run. Its quite a dangerous game you play at that point, literally and figuratively. But if you don't want to piss off your coach or any of your teammates its block the plate and hope for the best. Brutal, I know.

And catchers are normally big, plodding dudes. I hit 3 of them in my playing time. One was high school, two were single A. I was out 2 of those and only knocked one of them back. At 165lbs, I didn't have the momentum that the 240lb specimens who play in the majors have. I was an emergency catcher(I caught until high school when I was switched to short) and fortunately none of my games included a collision. I probably would have just stepped aside.

He was dead meat by six feet, and I was able to brace myself and let him have it, leaning into him hard. There's a big difference between running into the catcher because he's completely blocking the plate and you have no where to go to try and score and going out of your way to injure the catcher so you can go back to home plate after the catcher was taken out to be safe. Nyger Morgan would have been safe had he slid. Mark Teixeira would have been safe had he slid. Cousins would have been safe had he slid to the back of home plate. All of these instances and others shown in here, the runner had already decided that the only way they would be safe was if they deliberately tried to injure the catcher and go back to home plate after the collision. If the players were only colliding with the catcher when they had no where to go, the rule change would not have occurred. But the fact is that too many were deliberately trying to injure the catchers and the rule change had to happen. Go ahead and blame the "bleeding-hearts," "pussies," "liberals,"... and who ever else. also most if not all of them dropped their shoulder if your running into a catcher you must stay upright you can’t drop your shoulder and intentionally cause an injury

I played softball-I caught for 11 years. Weighed a whopping 145 pounds soaking wet. Blocked that plate like a linebacker lol. Loved that part of the game when the bigger gals would be barreling at me full speed and I'd be waiting for 'em! But man, my knees are paying for it now lol.

The catchers rarely ever risk their lives. Football players have had their helmets knocked off and hit directly by someone else’s helmets. Rugby has guys face planted into the ground. Baseball is no where near the amount of injures as other sports
I think if the catcher is blocking the plate once they get the ball, the runner should not be forced to slide into a tag, they should be allowed to try and go through the catcher. The Posey play is a collision play that has no place in baseball, the runner had the entire plate to slide into but chose to go after Posey. Can't blame anything on Posey.

I am a trained umpire in Canada and at the level I normally conducted any contact as seen in the video would be an automatic out and an ejection. But baseball Canada rules might differ when it comes to close play/collision rules.
In Little League, (in my town) the rule was the catcher had to stand aside the base line, so the runner could score, and the catcher could not stand atop the plate. If the runner were to still truck them, or try to, they would be ejected and called out. Why not implement that?
New mlb rules do not outlaw blocking the plate as long as the catcher has possession of the ball, or is in the process of fielding the ball. In these cases, a base runner can still collide with the catcher if it is unavoidable. It is up to the umpires judgement. If a catcher has possession and still blocks the plate, the runner can still collide if it judged as unavoidable.
I always laugh at the runners who stomp on Home after the collision acting all big and bad only for the Catcher to hold on and the douchebag runner to be out.

I thought it was like a MLB rule that players arent allowed to cover/crowd the Plate being it 1st, 2nd, 3rd or HOME plate. If it happens, Hitter is considered Safe.
That's a fairly new rule.. they barred catchers from blocking the plate shortly after the Buster Posey injury in this video. His leg was hurt pretty bad and he missed a bunch of time. After seeing one of the stars of the league go down on a play at the plate MLB took action.
I was thought to always lower my shoulder into the catchers glove and hit like a battering ram to break the play at home plate. Anyone who has played baseball will tell you catchers always get the worse of this blows. I broke a kids nose in high school in a collision at home plate. I am glad the catchers are more protected now. When this collisions get ugly they can end a season for a player.
I played football all my childhood through senior year. I was also a catcher and let me tell you, no hit I recieved playing football hurts like getting plowed into at the plate. The gear does nothing to protect you and you're just stagnant, waiting for someone coming full speed. I know collisions are rare these days but kids, just in case, leave your mask on if there's a potential play at the plate.

When I was a kid, I saw a collision between Dave Parker of the Pirates and John Stearns, catching for the Mets. BA-BOOM! Parker was out and busted his cheekbone. Turns out Stearns played football at Colorado. Heehee! Sorry, Parker!
As a kid, the catcher position stood out and was my favorite from day 1, it was the position that I wanted to play and my absolute favorite part about it was home plate collisions. There was nothing more adrenaline pumping, motivating and exciting to me than a home plate collision. When I played, my dream was to be in as many home plate collisions as possible, for me it was the ultimate challenge and motivation to be able receive a throw with a runner running down the base full speed and make the catch through the best and most violent hit that the runner had and still hold on to the ball and getting him out. It's sad that they banned them and I wish they were still part of the game.
Other fielders can't block the base line so why can the catcher? The rule should be you can't be in the baseline. What's the runner supposed to do? All he can do is plow into the guy.

This is was so crazy that this was part of the game for so long. Just got 250 lb dudes getting a 87 foot runway to build up steam and crash into the catcher and see if he can hold on to the ball or not. A lot of times the catchers are on their knees too or are just receiving the ball so they are not able to fully see when the collision is coming. Thankfully plays at the plate are rare but when they happened it was like a sanctioned car crash for the catcher and for the runner it was crash into him as hard as you can and see if you can get him to drop the ball.
The catcher is in the way of home plate and to move a 240lbs catcher you can’t just run up and tap him you have to hit that guy like you trying to move a semi truck
Mariners and Blue Jays, Toronto's Buck Martinez got run over by Phil Bradley (former Missouri QB) and broke his leg. Tried to get Gorman Thomas at third, threw wildly, but tagged Thomas out on the return throw. Amazing play and surely one of the most brutal collisions everywhere, with Martinez showing true toughness.
Seeing these collisions remind me of the scene in 'Baseketball' where the outfielder gets tackled by a football player after catching the fly ball. Lol

I think if the catcher is blocking the plate once they get the ball, the runner should not be forced to slide into a tag, they should be allowed to try and go through the catcher. The Posey play is a collision play that has no place in baseball, the runner had the entire plate to slide into but chose to go after Posey. Can't blame anything on Posey.

I am a trained umpire in Canada and at the level I normally conducted any contact as seen in the video would be an automatic out and an ejection. But baseball Canada rules might differ when it comes to close play/collision rules.

In Little League, (in my town) the rule was the catcher had to stand aside the base line, so the runner could score, and the catcher could not stand atop the plate. If the runner were to still truck them, or try to, they would be ejected and called out.

New mlb rules do not outlaw blocking the plate as long as the catcher has possession of the ball, or is in the process of fielding the ball. In these cases, a base runner can still collide with the catcher if it is unavoidable. It is up to the umpires judgement. If a catcher has possession and still blocks the plate, the runner can still collide if it judged as unavoidable.
I always laugh at the runners who stomp on Home after the collision acting all big and bad only for the Catcher to hold on and the douchebag runner to be out.
They aren't douchebags. They are fucking hyped on adrenaline after a fucking mini car crash. Those things don't just hurt the catcher. As a former running back I can tell you right now that these things have real deal consequences for everyone involved.

I thought it was like a MLB rule that players arent allowed to cover/crowd the Plate being it 1st, 2nd, 3rd or HOME plate. If it happens, Hitter is considered Safe.
That's a fairly new rule.. they barred catchers from blocking the plate shortly after the Buster Posey injury in this video. His leg was hurt pretty bad and he missed a bunch of time. After seeing one of the stars of the league go down on a play at the plate MLB took action.
I was thought to always lower my shoulder into the catchers glove and hit like a battering ram to break the play at home plate. Anyone who has played baseball will tell you catchers always get the worse of this blows. I broke a kids nose in high school in a collision at home plate. I am glad the catchers are more protected now. When this collisions get ugly they can end a season for a player.

I played football all my childhood through senior year. I was also a catcher and let me tell you, no hit I recieved playing football hurts like getting plowed into at the plate. The gear does nothing to protect you and you're just stagnant, waiting for someone coming full speed. I know collisions are rare these days but kids, just in case, leave your mask on if there's a potential play at the plate.

When I was a kid, I saw a collision between Dave Parker of the Pirates and John Stearns, catching for the Mets. BA-BOOM! Parker was out and busted his cheekbone. Turns out Stearns played football at Colorado. Heehee! Sorry, Parker!
As a kid, the catcher position stood out and was my favorite from day 1, it was the position that I wanted to play and my absolute favorite part about it was home plate collisions. There was nothing more adrenaline pumping, motivating and exciting to me than a home plate collision. When I played, my dream was to be in as many home plate collisions as possible, for me it was the ultimate challenge and motivation to be able receive a throw with a runner running down the base full speed and make the catch through the best and most violent hit that the runner had and still hold on to the ball and getting him out. It's sad that they banned them and I wish they were still part of the game.

This is was so crazy that this was part of the game for so long. Just got 250 lb dudes getting a 87 foot runway to build up steam and crash into the catcher and see if he can hold on to the ball or not. A lot of times the catchers are on their knees too or are just receiving the ball so they are not able to fully see when the collision is coming. Thankfully plays at the plate are rare but when they happened it was like a sanctioned car crash for the catcher and for the runner it was crash into him as hard as you can and see if you can get him to drop the ball.

Tried to get Gorman Thomas at third, threw wildly, but tagged Thomas out on the return throw. Amazing play and surely one of the most brutal collisions everywhere, with Martinez showing true toughness.
Seeing these collisions remind me of the scene in 'Baseketball' where the outfielder gets tackled by a football player after catching the fly ball. Lol
