Thank God for this new rule, this was one of the stupidest most unfair situations in sport. Even in hockey were hitting is allowed charging is a penalty. It’s considered dangerous and unfair to allow a guy to take a straight up run at somebody. If baseball wants to be a contact sport it should be a contact sport all the time not just in one narrow situation where one poor bastard has to take a concussion for no reason

wiremessiah but it's not their own choice. If they don't block the plate they lose their job for letting in runs. If it were me I'd block the plate too because if you don't you're letting down your whole team. I'm saying the new rule is there to make sure that catchers don't have to be a crash test dummy for players coming to home plate to score a run. I mean you watched the video right? Those catchers didn't have a fat chance in hell to protect themselves from those freight trains coming straight at them

Zechariah Landstrom If the throw is good enough to get the runner out, shouldn't the catcher be able to field the ball and tag the runner without being in the direct path of the runner? The runner is pretty much focused on scoring, so the catcher just needs to field the ball slightly in front of or slightly behind the baseline to avoid a collision with the baserunner.

The problem with the old rules was the fact that it encouraged people to hit the catcher as hard as they possibly could, in hopes that they would drop the ball.
That kind of encouragement in any sport (other than martial arts/boxing/etc.) should have no place.
Imagine if you could try dislodging the puck in hockey by just ramming the goaltender as hard as you could? It would be insanity.

    • @chrisseger2346
      @chrisseger2346 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Apples and oranges. Injuries at the plate weren't that common, especially when it's a decent catcher who knows when to move or not.
You act as if there aren't more vicious hits in hockey already. There isn't a single non-combat sport that encourages violence more than hockey, and you want to pussify baseball. I don't get it.

I always enjoyed the physical aspect of baseball; collisions at home plate chief among them. However, modern day players are bigger, stronger, and faster. The amount of force impacting a stationary target (the catcher), is clearly too much for even the best of athletes. Probably for the best that a rule change was made, but I do miss the “ good old days.”

Well two wrong things....the catcher is blocking the base line to the plate (he should be aligned with the right edge of the plate ...second the runner should be suspended for the rest of the season for internationally hitting catcher....he had room to see life away and tag plate.....

"In order to protect the..." Didn't exist until they sold sports to chicks.
It's just going to get worse and worse, as they nerf everything.
And it's as much a reason for the decline in popularity of professional sports, as anything else.
Those rare dangerous collisions, in all sports, are what makes them exciting.
Do you think anyone would watch 'Ice Road Truckers' if there was zero chance of anything really bad happening?
Quit trying to sell sports to chicks.

The only reason Posey was injured and the other were not was because Posey is a shitty catcher, and not because of the collision. When catcher's do their thing correctly, collisions don't cause injury. we made a rule change to respond to a shitty catcher. Good job, MLB.

I think it’s stupid. I think you should be able to play to win. Maybe not as crazy as sharpening your cleats and spiking people but stuff like this, if you have a chance to break that up from the catcher catching the ball and you scoring I think you should be able to do that.

I hate this rule. In my opinion, the play at the plate "was" the most exciting play in sports. If you're a catcher when I was playing the rule was if the ball is on it's way you can block the plate. It's a business decision I guess... but it's as much of the game as trying to break up a double play... wait they can't do that wither

  • @aydendevoney
