If you want to know who Overwatch are, you really need to watch the trailers in their actual release order as the first cinematic (the one in the museum) actually tells you who they are.

The other animated shorts are beautiful as well, but with this one I don't feel like it's only the water that is the animators showing off. I think The Last Bastion is genuinely the most gorgeous of all of them. And what better way for an art and animation team th showcase their talents than with an animated short that includes NO DIALOGUE. It seeks to completely immerse you in the visuals and tell you a story in a purely organic fashion. It's quite a phenomenal work.

You cannot forget the moment at 14:12 where he hasn't yet made his decision to return to the forest. The shot pulls WAY back, and you see him, a small dot exactly halfway between the forest (peace) and the city (war).
There was a war in which a "God AI" took control of all the lesser AI in the world and attacked the humans. Bastion units were the primary foot soldiers. The rest of the bastions were destroyed as "symbols of violence and destruction". With no other AI controlling him, Bastion was left to make his own decisions, hence the scene in the meadow.
Overwatch was the crack squad of specialized soldiers who were able to use advanced tech to work behind enemy lines and take out AI strongholds, eventually winning the war.

Damn it, I forgot to grab some tissues for this short.
This is one of my favorite shorts there is.
It hasn't any dialog and BLizzard packed all the emotion in Musik, SFX and VFX.
The Gray-scaling when the ptsd kicks in and so on.
And when the Bird returns with the sticks, the tears just break.

Chronological order is great. You'll learn who Overwatch is quite soon if you keep watching. Hi! I've never seen you before but I just recently discovered you through your ERB videos and I like your reaction content a lot. I just binged your three OW reaction videos and want to condense my commenting into one single rather than spread out a lot of verbal diarrhea across multiple posts. Starting with this one, let me explain and point out a few things you're curious about or might wanna know:
Your analysis is somewhat accurate. Bastion could easily be considered an old warrior with PTSD. Just he is a machine, a highly sophisticated one, who chose to defy his programming that was trying to force him to fight a war long since lost. One of the most ingenious engineers in the overwatch universe even comments on this when they meet, as he is surprised to discover a Bastion-type Omnic that is not trying to gun down every human in sight. The two become friends.
The bird is called Ganymede, and it's a long-held crackpot fan theory that Ganymede is the reason Bastion is so ruthless in the game, whispering to the peace-loving Bastion how the Enemy Must Die. He has the highest damage output of all the characters except one and is attrocious to fight against because that damage can come suddenly and unexpected from any angle. Despite his fat robot form he can be quite agile.
This is also the only overwatch animation without any voice, nobody speaks a word and yet it is one of the most emotionally gripping. Truly a sign of how good the animation team is at telling a visual story. Mad props to the sound team as well, without them this would just be an ok video.
Now, I want to make a few comments about the other two cinematics as well if you would entertain me. Firstly, in Dragons, you can notice Genji twice before he is spoken to by Hanzo, showing that he has been stalking Hanzo from the start. Right before Hanzo climbs that dragon wall/door into the temple, you can see Genji briefly on the left-hand side above/behind Hanzo. Second, when he enters the temple proper, you see him stand up against the moon in the background. Another minor detail, Hanzo lays down a sparrow's feather as part of the offerings in his mourning ritual of Genji. Genji when young was called "The Sparrow" as his nickname. This same feather is the one Genji switches places with during his ninjutsu moment at the very end where he disappears in a plume of smoke. You can see the feather fall onto the camera.
Next, my favourite cinematic Rise and Shine, because Mei is Bae and nobody can make me believe otherwise. Here we learn some rather peculiar things, stuff you've now earned out of order but its all the same, you'll understand this cinematic better soon enough. That said, Mei survived the cryogenic process by sheer freak accident, the others of her team all perished. To make it worse, they were all as close as family, with Snowball being akin to their family pet, because they all worked together for so long in Antartica. The data Mei is speaking of is studying the nature of weather. With how much raw data she collected she believes she can do major work in manipulating weather and reverse global warming, which was the core of their research project and why Overwatch was funding it in the first place.
What Overwatch WAS (because it disbanded nearly a decade in the past at this point) it was a global taskforce whose goal was, in its most simplistic terms: protect mankind. It spawned during the "Omnic Crisis", a very dull term for what was practically the third world war, where it was man vs machine. Overwatch were the heroes who saved the day, people with unique skills and abilities, akin to superpowers, who rescued the world from the brink of annihilation and lead mankind into the future. Eventually however, a war-time organization was deemed unnecessary and it was shut down abruptly and violently. This is why Mei and her team was never extracted from Antartica, nobody knew they were there as Overwatch HQ was blown to pieces in the final weeks of Overwatch's existence. Instead of being repaired, Overwatch got given the finger by the world due to certain elements within it (Blackwatch).
TL;DR Sorry for the massive wall of text. Thanks for reacting to Overwatch, it is amazing, you are amazing and keep watching in chronological order, you'll learn as you go!
PS: Overwatch is not the only group of cinematics Blizzard has done/made. They've got Starcraft 2 and World of Warcraft as well, with brilliant cinematics for both franchises. I guess Diablo is also a franchise of theirs I'm just not a fan, but those cinematics are also great.

"No one plays Mercy" is entirely dependent on which patch the game is on. She has been everything from basically useless to brokenly oppressive. Most characters in most games are like that.
