@@SunnyyDayzz you can argue that, I don't think him repeating two names counts as spoken words when really the power from WALL-E comes from the fact he needs to show movies and objects to express his emotions
The small detail of the cinematic I really like is after his first "PTSD" episode in the forest. Every scene afterward until he reaches the field, he is walking in the shadows as if he's ashamed of what he's done. It's a huge transition from how he was walking through the sunlight during the first part.
I wouldn't say ashamed tbh. After that scene where he mowed the forest down, you see a clear change in posture and his being head lowered down. Combined with the music, I would say he's sad, very sad to lose his birdy friend.
I also love his posture/movement afterward. Right after to goes back to sentry form he looks super scared/confused. Then his slouch does make it seem like he is sad from the loss of Ganymede. And his reluctance to move away from the forest is furthered by him looking back before bumping in to the destroyed bastion. Then after he is put back into his battle mode he stands strait and strong, cocks his gun, and from there it is easy to know what would have happened next if Ganymede hadn’t come: destruction and death of who knows how many.
I've seen a lot of people saying about how it's all his programming etc. But I feel it goes out of its way to tell you that he's fully aware and sentient. To me, the part at the end isn't 'because he's programmed to attack the city', but because he just witnessed all of his people being butchered, triggered his PTSD and reverted back into seek and destroy mode again.
@@drunklord9471 Literally yes It is, but figuratively it's simulating the affects of PTSD on a living being. People who have been in war zones for a period of time almost become "programmed" to act in certain ways when they sense something that puts their mind back into that environment. If Bastion was replaced with a human with PTSD, the affect of the woodpecker's noise would cause a similar reaction. Maybe not turning into a minigun, but maybe dropping to the floor or running to cover. If they were armed maybe they would shoot towards the noise as retaliation - who knows.
@@drunklord9471 Bastion does have higher cognitive function as an AI and so his defense mechanism is an instinct same as the ones that soldiers with PTSD have when they face gunfire or what sounds like gunfire because they to are conditioned to such reactions through training. It really is PTSD, we are "programmed" the same as all living things (and the form of AI in overwatch are at that same stage.) but we simply evolved to have extremely efficient biological programming and our intellect allowed us to then understand and manipulate it using different techniques.
For a little backstory: During the omnic crisis the omnics in germany made a push towards Stuttgart and there was a huge battle to defend it. In the flashback here in the Last Bastion, we see Colonel Balderich from Honor and Glory fight alongside the regular german army. After that battle, the Crusaders and their fire-teams pushed out to Eichenwalde (the town from Honor and Glory, visible in one of the background shots of this cinematic) to draw the attention of the omnics and give Stuttgart more time to put up heavier defenses and get reinforcements. They were ultimately successful in that mission and Stuttgart never fell, but Balderich was killed by the omnics in Eichenwalde. The Bastion unit from this cinematic was damaged in one of the battles and went dormant until Ganymede woke it by accident. It still has the target co-ordinates for Stuttgart in its memory, but during the dormant period the fairly simplistic AI of the Bastion units (basically Sentry mode (blue) and Combat mode (red)) has both regressed and grown. Its personality matrix is almost childlike, with few to none preconceptions, hence its curiosity at the abundant nature of the Schwarzwald forest around it.
This bastion unit wasn't targeting Stuttgart. The city it was targeting was Numbani, which is in Africa. While the field itself is not a playable map in the game, Numbani is. The reason you see a Crusader in the fight despite the fact that it's in Africa and not Germany is because during the Omnic Crisis, most of the world's armies joined together to fight threats all over the globe, so Crusaders were deployed in the field all over the place, not just in defense of Germany.
@@asktoybox that definitely is not Numbani that is shown Numbani has those sky scrapers with horns, of which you see non of in the close ups of the city ( 23:26 for reference)
Bill Cipher Numbani has skyscrapers like the ones in this cinematic, there’s no other map that has skyscrapers like the ones in this cinematic, so unless they made a completely new city for just one cinematic, which I highly doubt they’d wast time on that, that city is most definitely Numbani. I pay attention to details like this and there’s only one small building that has horns on it and from where Bastion is, you wouldn’t even be able to see it because the taller skyscrapers would be blocking it.
This cinematic did a great job portraying so much more story than it seems to. They demonstrated that this machine that was created solely for the purpose of being a weapon was capable of compassion, and that it was able to have negative reactions to stress. It demonstrated qualities similar to PTSD and when combined with the Torbjorn comic that came later, this becomes even more important because it is revealed that even the creators of the Omnics didn't know that this model was even capable of feeling emotions. They took the most inhuman of their characters and made something so emotional and beautiful. I love the cinematic team at Blizzard all their stuff like this.
This is where I envy the people who don't play the game a little. Anyone who's just interested in the lore can experience the beauty of these animations without any attached negative emotions. Anyone who's played the game for a period of time however has at some point loathed Bastion/Mei with every fiber of their being.
Abso fucking lutely lol. As im a doomfist main, so trying to get the upperhand on a bastion is just about damn near impossible sometimess if he is even remotely protected and you have to swap
@@spartandown4524 true, but sombra emp combined with any big aoe ult like riptire or rocket barrage will destroy that comp since you have to stay so close... Still the most degenerate strat to this date though😂
Tried to see if anyone mentioned it, but didn't see so; "In memory of Yvain Gnabro" - Gnabro was one of the Blizzard's animators who died in motorcycle accident in 2016, around the same time when this animation was in the works. There isn't too much information about him so we don't specifically know if he was working on this cinematic. But it was finished in his memory. But yeah I agree with others in the comments, leave 'Zero Hour' for the last - it includes characters from previous cinematics and continues the story from those so if you watch that before the others you don't really get "why these people are here and who they are". :')
21:20 that shot though, I love how Bastion is right in the middle, framed by those broken trees in the front, as if he is trapped by the destruction and the mess he created. A cool way to show how the short and his path is going to be from now on. Amazing! Also, notice how at 26:25 the sun just hits Bastion as the bird approaches. As if this little guy can set Bastion free from the darkness(symbolized by the shadow from the cloud) he is in. Sublime
Recall -> Are You With Us? -> Cinematic Trailer -> (Hero -> Infiltration) -> Rise and Shine -> Zero Hour; (Shooting Star anywhere in between, Storm Rising cut scenes are not necessary now but might be important later on for the plot.)
also, when wakes up he looks at his hands, left arm is a hand and right arm is a gun, the whole story moves from left to right except at the end when he rejects the right side and moves left
dayum, never noticed that, might actually be intentional also i kinda like the contrast, checks hand, checks other hand, which isn't a hand but an assault rifle^^
Nah, that's a common film technique to film motion from left to right. Bastion was already released with his design much earlier than the short released. It's just easier to be consistent. Sorry to ruin the magic for you
@@tay5658 He’s still annoying as hell. If he catches you slipping once you will literally get thanos snapped. Can’t tell you how many times I peeked slightly to hard or didn’t know where it was and just get shredded before I can blink
Honestly, you´re the only one doing reactions in this format (where you look through it once without pausing and then going indepht). I really really like this and more people should adapt this. Its really disruptive when people watch something and pause like every 5 - 10 seconds (no matter what they are reacting to).
Yeah that’s true... even tho I watched the cinematic 1000 times I still want to enjoy it and don’t want to have someone always commenting on it... I like to hear his opinion out afterward and not during the cinematic... Idk
This really gives me Wall-E vibes with a robot that conveys such great emotion without uttering a single word. Honor and Glory may be my favorite, but this gives a completely unique emotion.
I think a more accurate robot to compare Bastion to in terms of story would be the Iron Giant, but I understand what you're saying in terms of having a silent story.
2 subtle things that were great: 1) When Bastion finds the first destroyed bot's body, a cloud shadow is shown to loom over the scene as he bends down to scan the memory banks, forshadowing what was about to happen to him(original programming takes over). 2) Combat Bastion is subtly but noticeably stiffer in body language as compared to Forest Bastion who pretty much moves like a living thing(slight boops in movement, overall smoother movement).
Another subtle thing: Bastion's body language after the PTSD episode completely changes, he sways as he walks, his shoulders are slack and the head is lowered slightly. He also walks at a slower pace.
In this one, I love how they are able to make the robot (Bastion) show emotion despite not having facial features, or a voice (other than just the "hums"). Just tilting his head to show curiosity/confusion; or when he looks at the caterpillar walking off screen, and it's implied that the bird eats it, and you see Bastion's head recoil back in shock. Those little details are great to notice, and show very good skill on the part of the animators. It's a similar thing with Wall-E, since Both Wall-E himself and EVE only ever use a few words, but you can still very clearly see the emotion they portray at any time, by the movements, the noises, the position of his mobile eyes, or EVE's LED face.
It reminds me a bit of Chewbacca in "Star Wars". It was always clear what he wanted to express, despite him only roaring. Also, I want to add how Bastion calls for the bird after awaking from his "red mode" in the forest. It's easy to miss (I only realized it after watching the short several times), but it's a nice feature that adds much to the effect you describe.
So at the 6:00 mark or so, you can see a castle in the background. That is Eichenwalde, which was the town in Reinhardt's short "Honor and Glory". At 7:06 or so, you can see Balderich van Alder throw a fire strike before deploying his shield; Balderich van Alder was the other fella in Reinhardt's short that ends up collapsing on the throne. Bastion was supposed to be part of the omnic battalion fighting against the Crusaders, but he got lost in the woods.
Along with the castle at 5:59 being the castle from Honor and Glory, you see Colonel Balderich and the other Crusaders from Honor and Glory during the flashback around the 7:05 mark. Meanwhile, I'll suggest that you watch "Recall" next followed by "Rise and Shine" just so that you can understand more about the overall story of the Overwatch world.
Before watching zero hour I suggest watching recall, rise and shine, infiltration, hero and then watch zero hour to better understand them all. Great video 👍
Personaly i like to see Rise and Shine the most here. I have two scenes i hope he has an opinion on that shows, at least for my understanding, that Mei is not the evil ice devil everybody says.
The reason I love this so much is that in "The Last Bastion" the Blizzard cinematic team shows it's mastery over cinematic story-telling. Every other cinematic has some sort of exposition to help with world-building in this new world we are introduced in, but here it's 100% show don't tell. This cinematic gives us a glimpse of the Omnic Wars, not much... just enough to make you curious, while focusing and telling you everything you need to know about Bastion. The bird of course is there for the emotional response of the audience which ends up *humanizing* Bastion in our eyes. Obviously a big part for triggering an emotional response is the music too which is 11/10 and I think doesn't get credited enough in more action-packed cinematics. I mean in this cinematic when the bird supposedly dies the music is sad while Bastion looks curious at best. Another scene would be Bastion stumbling on the other destroyed Bastion units. Again he doesn't show expression, or a reaction either, *BUT* the music swells up a bit in a dramatic tone making *us* feel sad about Bastion's "comrades". Of course I won't take away credit from the visuals, cinematic and aesthetic choices which Blizzard decides upon in every cinematic. Truly the best cinematic teams in the gaming industry!
Something probably not really captured in this is that in general, Bastion is one of the most hated characters of Overwatch, and Blizzard made us CARE. THEY MADE US CARE ABOUT CHARACTERS WE HATE. That made it even more amazing at the time.
Regarding your question as to whether this was a game map. The city in the distance is Stuttgart, which is right near the castle/town of Eichenwalde. That’s the town and castle from the Honor and Glory (Reinhardt) cinematic, and that one is a map in the game. You can actually see Stuttgart from the window of the tavern on the game map of Eichenwalde. It’s conceivable that if Bastion (the robot from this cinematic) hadn’t deactivated, he would’ve been fighting Reinhardt in one of the battles/skirmishes in the area! Love how it fits together.
It’s amazing how they portrayed PTSD with a robot. And showed his inherent goodness fighting and struggling with his programming and ptsd. Then all the symbolism. With the bird, not only representing free win and freedom but also his good side and reminding him to live in the present. And when that bird comes back putting him literally in the middle of the screen in the middle of the forest and the city, torn between 2 options, the conflict in his mind etc. This was just after he thought he killed the bird, killed off his good part so to speak, and afraid to hurt something else in the forest. Before finally showing him walking away from the city and picking the forest, choosing freedom and goodness. What an amazing way to humanize a robot…
20:50 as someone who really appreciates animations, the animation of coming out of the turret form and going back to blue mode is really cool. You can see the animations being super mechanical and static while in the red mode, and once Bastion shifts to blue mode here you can see him just kind of shift to more organic movement again, signalling that he doesn't really have control over anything he does while in the red form and showing us that it's his standard programming overriding his new self.
Very beautiful and emotional cinematic ^^ ❤ 7:40 I love the fact that the clouds obscure this shot and that they dissipate a bit when the bird comes back.
I remember the first time I saw this cinematic, I cried for a few minutes because I just felt all the pain and then all the anger that Bastion must have felt. If it wasn't for Ganymede (name of the bird) to be his anchor and pull him back, he would have been destroyed when reaching Eichenwalde. The fact that it portrayed so much emotion easily and without having to use a single word is why this is my favorite one, with "Honor and Glory" a very close second.
27:24 This perfectly incapsulates the story it tells, the choice. And it did this without a single piece of dialogue. This has been to this day my favorite cinematic of OverWatch and Blizzard, and one of my all time faves of any game, it truly pulled at my heart.
I think what's also amazing attention to detail is during the end when Bastion is walking towards the city and the cloud casts a shadow over him making it seem like all hope of redeeming himself is gone as he has now been consumed by his programming but suddenly the bird comes in to frame and flies towards him and at the same time, the cloud moves enough to allow some light to pass through showing that there is still hope.
Dragons will always be my most favorite short but this comes as a close second. Zero dialogue, beautiful imagery, amazing symbolism and literal robot PTSD. It gives the detail that the Omnics are living creatures that can have disorders same as humans.
Totally agreed! Usually it's a constant battle of which one of the two are my favorite. Usually my current favorite of the two is which ever one I watched most recent. ;-)
One thing I noticed but has never really been stated anywhere in the story is that there seems to be 'classes' of omnics. All of the aggressive omnics seem much more 'robotic' than their more passive counterparts, such as Zenyatta. This seems to suggest that the less sophisticated versions of omnics were more or less used as normal machine labor while the more human-like omnics were allowed much more autonomy in what they were allowed to do. This could have been one of the causes of the Omnic crisis, where the 'worker class' of omnics got tired of being treated like third class citizens and revolted. While this isn't stated anywhere in the canon of the story, it seems like it makes the most sense, as Null Sector and other forms of assault all seem to be filled with much more 'traditional' looking robots, and almost no humanoid omnics.
Ganymede and Snowball are the two originals we love most. Ganymede even gets a matching skin for all the bastion skins even though he never appears in actual gameplay aside from Highlight Intros and Emotes.
It is first time that leaving a comment. Even though I am Korean and I'm not good at English, I always enjoy watching your videos. It is very helpful to me that you analyze videos professionally. Always cheer for you : D
i don’t know if anyone has told you this yet, but there’s a comic that goes hand in hand with this! the swedish engineer from the game, torbjorn, who was one of the main creators of the omnics and the guy who takes responsibility for the crisis, finds bastion and decides to take care of him, even though torbjorn himself is very discriminatory towards omnics. it’s a very interesting subplot :)
Fun fact: This is a skin available in game, I believe it was if you ordered/bought the "Origin Edition" of Overwatch. Fun Fact 2: The old crusader from "Honor and Glory" is the one that is in the flashback if you look at the helmet.
I think the cool thing is - that I hadn’t noticed until watching this for the tenth time - Bastion’s turret is hidden on his shoulders. It’s hidden by vegetation and dirt to keep it a surprise to people who haven’t seen him in game, so when he goes turret mode in the cinematic, it shocks everyone.
The only reason why The Plan falls short compared to the other cinematics is while all of these are fully rendered to be cinematic shorts, The Plan was more or less fully rendered in the game's engine, which is why the models look a lot lower quality and the animation is more janky and the the lighting is a lot less dynamic. It's still a good short but the reason it has a much lower quality feel compared to the rest of the shorts is because of the fact that it was fully rendered using the game assets instead of models specifically designed for cinematic use. This is primarily because it was used just to introduce the Junkertown map, and not so much meant to be a powerful narrative story.
Intentional or not, I like how this kind of depicted a soldier with PTSD. Ganymede (the bird) is kind of like his snap back to reality. His target feels almost like a robots version of a "thousand mile stare", and its implied that even when he's happy in the forest, he's "still there". Watching it with that in mind, the confused and sad noises bastion makes after seeing Ganymede's smashed nest before soullessly pushing forward broke my heart. It was like he realized he'd pushed away his only friend.
I love how you can see Eichenwald in the background sometimes :D It ties in so well with Honor and Glory. The war Bastion sees through the other "bastion" is the same war from Honor and Glore, but most likely not from the exact time period. Might be earlier, or later for all I know, but it's the same time period at least.
Cool little trivia. The target city is Stuttgart, and the castle we see in the forest panning shots is the one from the Reinhardt cinematic, where the head crusader had his last stand. Generally, it's my favorite blizzard cinematic, as it tells the story without a bit of dialogue, and it is all the more powerful for it. It sort of reminds me of the movies Short Circuit, but I guess I'm not the only one who remembers those movies. ;) Finally, Last Bastion and Honor and Glory don't beat us over the head with morality, just present the two sides of the conflict, and how it looked from the ground. Love your channel, and was waiting with baited breath for you to see this one. Can't wait when you finally reach Zero Hour (but leave it for last, just trust everyone in the comments saying it's the cherry on top of the other cinematics, but you'll enjoy the payoff much much more. It's the avengers idea, you can technically watch it, but without the context of previous movies it kinda doesn't click.)
Well done! This short makes me cry every time I watch it. I was looking forward to your analysis of this one. You help me see new things I didn't catch before. The tree transition as well as pointing out the action of the camera away from the subject to communicate isolation were things I will take away. Your reactions also helped me see moments I missed where they subtly communicate the threatening nature of the Bastion unit towards the bird (the bird is named Ganymede, according to the developers) in the opening scenes. Thank you for lending me your vision to teach me things. Keep it up!
I think one of the most amazing things about this kind of cinematics is how they manage to tell a story without a single piece of dialog. To me this shows how talented are the people that work on these cinematics, which is also fitting considering that Bastion is a character that in-game doesn't talk, all its voicelines are beeps and boops.
At 8:00, I seen on a comment on another video, has so much on just one visual. A decision to be made but everything is focusing on bastion, wether to go back to the forest or continue to the city. Right on the horizon where the clouds form too. It makes it more emotional and give an extreme dramatic effect, IT SO GOOD!
I also like how they intensify the woodpecker sound the second time. It almost sounds like maybe they overlayed it with gunfire to amplify the jarring sensation.
The Last Bastion was never one of my favorite of the animated shorts, but it was the first I saw and got me interested in the lore of Overwatch. This is surprising especially since not a single word is spoken throughout. Mad respect for this cinematic, and this channel! Keep it up, can't wait for the next one! ❤️
I think the next Overwatch shorts list should be: 1. "Recall": Show a lot of beautiful flashbacks 2. "Rise and Shine": Tell the saddest story of overwatch 3. "Reunion": Use classical Western movies techniques And then... "Zero Hour" The other short arent necessary to understand "Zero Hour" because they tell individual stories of other characters of Overwatch. But i wish you react to them because they are very well done shorts too.
Someone might have mentioned it already, but the cute Bird's name is Ganymede. Also "I like this Pixar style its so lighthearted." Me: "You say that right before watching the Short about the Robot with PTSD."
1) This guy reaction are awesome 2) He take the animation so serious like he is inside and it’s cool 3) He is very good doing the analysis of the animation and showing the tricks they use Why is this channel so underrated?
I just want to add a small note to your explanation at 26:46. Regarding art design, let's take a moment to see the "weight" of the frame, i.e. space occupied by objects in the frames. Yes, Bastion is in the middle frame and the forest and the city in the other thirds, but it is equally balanced. The trees rise all the way to the sky and occupy almost the entire third with very little clouds. The city is very minuscule in comparison BUT has equal weight in the framing because of the massive clouds above it! Maybe it can be interpreted as nature having more "substance" or "dominance" and man-made structures being really small and having to make up for weight with clouds (something that is fleeting and impermanent)? Just something interesting I noticed that I thought I'd share :)
Additionally, this is one of my favourite shorts for Overwatch because it is entirely without dialogue! No words! And yet, they have managed to give us a masterpiece with just sound and visuals. Bastion can't talk and yet, it conveys the idea of PTSD to us. Isn't that brilliant?
I don't really do movies or actually want to start making videos using affter effects, but i think this channel did help me with other things. One of them is writing, some techniques used in filmmaking like how you present an enviroment, how you reveal a character and point of view can actually be used in writing and knowing this techniques did improve my own. Also it's really enjoyable to learn how things are made and makes me appreciate way more movies and cinamtics. Knowing now the real reason i think a movie or a cinematic is good makes me see everything with different eyes, thank you for all that Chris.
I love this short, it has amazing storytelling without saying a single word, it gives so much emotion to a character who can't speak, and its just so well made
this was really fun to see you reacting too, as it was such a strong reaction. from enjoying a peaceful scene, to confusion, to surprise and then amazement. Discovered your channel not long ago and now i'm addicted to your content!

A little detail which isn't hinted in the cinematics is the castle in the background at 5:59 The cinematic "Honor and Glory" took place there. This all takes place in Germany :) Also seen one of the shield soldiers at 7:04 which is Balderich the guy which died on the thrown in "Honor and Glory".
For your question: no, the forrest and the open field are not ingame playable map. I think this is the only cinematic that didnt based the background from the game
This was a really good animation to the sounds and the idea of a woodpecker sounding like a gun just blows my mind so much creative thinking goes into these animations to make you get chills from even the most normal things
Love how in depth these are and how it shines a new light on these awesome cinematics. I think it'd be super interesting to see your thoughts on the original 2004 World of Warcraft opening. Blizzard's been rocking our socks off for years and years.

The reason you see a Crusader in the fight despite the fact that it's in Africa and not Germany is because during the Omnic Crisis, most of the world's armies joined together to fight threats all over the globe, so Crusaders were deployed in the field all over the place, not just in defense of Germany.
@@asktoybox that definitely is not Numbani that is shown
Numbani has those sky scrapers with horns, of which you see non of in the close ups of the city ( 23:26 for reference)
@Toybox does the forest with racks and waterfalls with pine trees look like Africa to you? bruh
matthew has a point there just saying
This cinematic did a great job portraying so much more story than it seems to. They demonstrated that this machine that was created solely for the purpose of being a weapon was capable of compassion, and that it was able to have negative reactions to stress. It demonstrated qualities similar to PTSD and when combined with the Torbjorn comic that came later, this becomes even more important because it is revealed that even the creators of the Omnics didn't know that this model was even capable of feeling emotions. They took the most inhuman of their characters and made something so emotional and beautiful. I love the cinematic team at Blizzard all their stuff like this.
All without ANY WORDS
This is where I envy the people who don't play the game a little. Anyone who's just interested in the lore can experience the beauty of these animations without any attached negative emotions. Anyone who's played the game for a period of time however has at some point loathed Bastion/Mei with every fiber of their being.

Not a single line of dialogue and tells a complete, touching story. This is one of the hardest things to do in cinema, and Blizzard smashed it.
Tried to see if anyone mentioned it, but didn't see so;
"In memory of Yvain Gnabro" - Gnabro was one of the Blizzard's animators who died in motorcycle accident in 2016, around the same time when this animation was in the works.
Oooh i thought that was the guy who tried to save the motorcyclist. Wow
Lol
Has he watched rise and shine?
@@aorusaki the memorial for the guy who saved the motorcyle is in lijiang tower
21:20 that shot though, I love how Bastion is right in the middle, framed by those broken trees in the front, as if he is trapped by the destruction and the mess he created. A cool way to show how the short and his path is going to be from now on. Amazing!
Also, notice how at 26:25 the sun just hits Bastion as the bird approaches. As if this little guy can set Bastion free from the darkness(symbolized by the shadow from the cloud) he is in. Sublime
Before Zero Hour, you need: -Recall -Hero -Infiltration -Shooting Star -Rise and Shine -Cinematic Trailer
Recall -> Are You With Us? -> Cinematic Trailer -> (Hero -> Infiltration) -> Rise and Shine -> Zero Hour; (Shooting Star anywhere in between, Storm Rising cut scenes are not necessary now but might be important later on for the plot.)
TBH Hero, Infiltration and shooting Star are not that relevant on Zero hour, still would love for him to see them.
can verify this is needed
the reason for this is because Zero hour is the cinematic trailer for overwatch 2 so you must watch all of the cinematics from overwatch 1 first
definately "recall" and "rise and shine", i dont think you need to bother with "shooting star", "hero" and "infiltration"
This cinematic . . . big Iron Giant "You don't have to be a gun" energy. Got tears in my eyes all over again.
also, when wakes up he looks at his hands, left arm is a hand and right arm is a gun, the whole story moves from left to right except at the end when he rejects the right side and moves left
dayum, never noticed that, might actually be intentional
also i kinda like the contrast, checks hand, checks other hand, which isn't a hand but an assault rifle^^
Nah, that's a common film technique to film motion from left to right. Bastion was already released with his design much earlier than the short released. It's just easier to be consistent. Sorry to ruin the magic for you
OMG I NEVER NOTICED THAT!!! Huge catch!!!

Honestly, you´re the only one doing reactions in this format (where you look through it once without pausing and then going indepht).
I really really like this and more people should adapt this.
Its really disruptive when people watch something and pause like every 5 - 10 seconds (no matter what they are reacting to).
Facts
Yeah that’s true... even tho I watched the cinematic 1000 times I still want to enjoy it and don’t want to have someone always commenting on it... I like to hear his opinion out afterward and not during the cinematic...
Idk
All these feelings and emotions portrayed without even uttering a word.
One of blizzards best artistic shorts. Just pure greatness.
This really gives me Wall-E vibes with a robot that conveys such great emotion without uttering a single word.
Honor and Glory may be my favorite, but this gives a completely unique emotion.
actually its more accurate to the Somali and the Forest Guardian now
I think a more accurate robot to compare Bastion to in terms of story would be the Iron Giant, but I understand what you're saying in terms of having a silent story.
Bastion kinda reminds me of the Iron Giant.
this is my second and Honor and Glory would be my number 1 spot
2 subtle things that were great:
1) When Bastion finds the first destroyed bot's body, a cloud shadow is shown to loom over the scene as he bends down to scan the memory banks, forshadowing what was about to happen to him(original programming takes over).
I didn’t know I cared for cinematography until I started watching this channel. Much love!
p.s. “Rise and Shine” is another excellent cinematic
I’d recommend “Recall” before “Rise and Shine” since, in the storyline, “Recall” happens before “Rise and Shine”
I think exactly the same, hahaha.

How doesn't he cry from this... I swear even after the like 20th time that I watched this short, I still burst out in tears towards the end 🥺👉🏼👈🏼
Genji is cutting onions again xD
Very beautiful and emotional cinematic ^^ ❤
7:40 I love the fact that the clouds obscure this shot and that they dissipate a bit when the bird comes back.

27:24
This perfectly incapsulates the story it tells, the choice.
And it did this without a single piece of dialogue. This has been to this day my favorite cinematic of OverWatch and Blizzard, and one of my all time faves of any game, it truly pulled at my heart.
This is the most emotional Overwatch short. It really captures the impact that PTSD has on people.
Usually my current favorite of the two is which ever one I watched most recent. ;-)
The reinhardt ones definitely my favourite but there’s so many good ones!
OOOOWWWW been waiting for you to do this one...this brings a tear to my eye

It is first time that leaving a comment. Even though I am Korean and I'm not good at English, I always enjoy watching your videos. It is very helpful to me that you analyze videos professionally. Always cheer for you : D
Just a side note, Yvain Gnabro was a Blizzard animator who died in a motorcycle accident on June 4th, 2016, just before this short was released.
I love how he changes his background everytime to fit the video
i don’t know if anyone has told you this yet, but there’s a comic that goes hand in hand with this! the swedish engineer from the game, torbjorn, who was one of the main creators of the omnics and the guy who takes responsibility for the crisis, finds bastion and decides to take care of him, even though torbjorn himself is very discriminatory towards omnics. it’s a very interesting subplot :)
takes some responsibility*
Fun fact: This is a skin available in game, I believe it was if you ordered/bought the "Origin Edition" of Overwatch.
Fun Fact 2: The old crusader from "Honor and Glory" is the one that is in the flashback if you look at the helmet.
I could’ve sworn I got it out a loot box but I could be wrong
Yea you’re right actually. It’s been so long since the game came out I forgot
There's also a junkrat cinematic called "the plan" it's not that well known but funny nonetheless
first, we light the fuse!
It was like he realized he'd pushed away his only friend.
i dont speak english but i love ur chanel, I understood only 30% of your explanations but I really like
I love how you can see Eichenwald in the background sometimes :D It ties in so well with Honor and Glory. The war Bastion sees through the other "bastion" is the same war from Honor and Glore, but most likely not from the exact time period. Might be earlier, or later for all I know, but it's the same time period at least.
You're going to LOSE YOUR MIND when you finally see Zero Hour! But yes please keep watching the others first! :D
It sort of reminds me of the movies Short Circuit, but I guess I'm not the only one who remembers those movies. ;)
Finally, Last Bastion and Honor and Glory don't beat us over the head with morality, just present the two sides of the conflict, and how it looked from the ground.

Ganymede demands sustenance. You must acquiesce to please your birb overlord.
I think the cute was referring to how bastion is shocked to see death for such a small creature, contrasted to how he was built for killing

A little detail which isn't hinted in the cinematics is the castle in the background at 5:59
