As a drummer, it intrigued me but was never something I needed to learn. Thirty years later, I can finally sleep well at night. Bless you.
Can relate. I also think I wondered about circular breathing since middle school I remember telling a friend about circular breathing and he ask how's that possible and I didn't have an answer and for years I thought about it from time to time
I'm a percussionist and circular breathing is the most interesting concept of wind instruments to me. I don't know why but it's just so cool that that's possible...
I spent my free time learning this and I ended up doing it in band and my teacher just stared at me for nearly the entire song we were playing in just pure shock and he said "Madison I don't know what planet you come from but please breathe like the rest of us" and then he realized what I was doing and he was really impressed. (He never said a word about it in class, since this was a bunch of 14 year olds.)
for a good 14 years I had thought that breathing in while you breathe out was impossible but apparently it's common practice for brass and woodwind players
Circular breathing is not difficult, but I think it's easier to learn when you are a kid. I've never had a hard time teaching this to a 12 year old. Adults are a different story because their muscle memory is a lot more set, their habits are a lot more ingrained. I learned when I was 12 or 13 and now, over 50 years later, it is still a part of my playing. I think that it should be considered part of the fundamentals of playing. It is valuable in embouchure development, breath control and is musically useful in phrasing. Good video! (I'm a trumpet player, btw)
I saw circular breathing somewhere on the internet and I thought.. wow that's stupid. And here I am, gasping for air after two notes on the flute. I hope to try this soon.
I push my tummy out to pull in air to circular breathe on the piccolo. It is very effective for sustained trills, especially when they are played softly or moderately softly. I also had an etude in college where I was to breathe after every single eighth note, they were all eighth notes. This taught me how to get bits of air quickly, so useful in staccato passages. I think Flight of the Bumblebee would be the ultimate test for circular breathing.
I don’t get how you do this for a flute because you have to store air in your cheeks but on the flute there is nothing to stop all the air from escaping your mouth like something you put your mouth directly on.
It's INSANE how much harder it is for the brain to process when you aren't buzzing your lips compared when you are. It must be an absolute joy to be able to control dynamics while doing this!
I remember when you visited Western Carolina University and you taught this to us. I was a big fan before you came, and you were and are such a gracious person and excellent musician. I thank you sincerely.
Yes, to use the cirkular breath on brass instrument you have to add the ability to keep the cornern of you mouth firm whil letting the cheeks go out. Try it very soft at first, long tones! It is very far from wood instruments. Learn to do it with freebuzzing.
The "don't even bother trying it on the instrument until you can do it comfortably in a straw" part makes so much sense. I really struggle getting a good transition from breathing in through the nose to breathing out through the mouth. So I never used it when I was playing. Trying to get back into music after a few years now, and I really wanna learn this. Thanks!

When I’m playing the flute I have to blow air directly from my lungs to make a sound, but when I try to make a sound on my flute by using the air stored in my cheeks, it’ll never make one. I am currently in middle school and i play oboe and no one in my school except the band teachers know circular breathing and im trying to learn it in this video so far im doing good
Hello oboe friend. Circular breathing is probably the best thing you should learn how to do on oboe because most of it's solos are very long. I'm trying to learn it too.
This has improved my cooking skills immensely. My young 3 year old grandson is exploring his 1st wind instrument, the fart. I think this will help improve the length, pitch and timing. Cheers, thanks so much. Great info.
My advice: 1)Empty your lungs to the point where you want to naturally inhale 2)Instead of taking air from your lungs to fill your cheeks, open your mouth (like a fish) and 'grab' the air. 3) Use the air in your cheeks to push quickly and inhale like you would normally at the same time For me, the problem was I needed to focus on too many things and I wouldn't realize I was exhaling when I needed to save that air Repeat that in continuous intervals. When that seems easier, then try to use lung-air to make bubbles.
Mike: thank you for posting your version of explaining circular breathing. One of the things I love about your videos is the articulate and clear way you explain things, describing as much as words can. Clearly, this isn't the only video on circular breathing on TH-cam, just in my opinion the best. Allow me to explain what I mean by the clarity and breath (no pun intended) of your narrative. You were the first person I witnessed who explained the transition back to pulmonary (as opposed to cheek muscle) and normal "energizing" of the clarinet with air. Your use of the word "dovetail" made me appreciate how this is done. It would almost be as if two air pressure meters, one capturing cheek air pressure, and another capturing pulmonary switch from the former to the latter in such a way as to keep constant the combine air pressure of the two--like 2 light bulbs in a room that dim and illuminate at perfectly inverse rates so as to keep the room's lumens static. This has helped me enormously. I'm no expert yet, but you've given me a much needed missing foundation in my conceptualization of the process, especially its finale. Bravo!
This is a great way to convince your friends that you can breathe forever. Even though it's obvious that you're still breathing, it's a cool party trick, eh? By the way, I'm a student clarinetist (3 years in band), and I'll just say that your videos have helped me out so much! I've learned things that the pros do (apparently) that I've never even heard of before. Even though it's not really necessary for me to be applying any of these soon, it's still a cool thing to keep in mind. And, if I start now, I've got one helluva head start!
Thank you for this video! I'm trying to learn didgeridoo to help my sleep apnea, and after about fifteen minutes of practice, I managed to keep a steady stream of bubbles for five minutes straight! I can't reliably produce enough air pressure for the actual instrument, but I'm sure practice will get me there! Thank you!
This is the best explanation of circular breathing ever! I took didgeridoo classes in person, but the instructor couldn’t explain it this comprehensively. Thank you!
Really?!!! 16 people gave this wonderful video a thumbs down? Sheeech. It's a thought room. I have marginal circular breathing skills, but I have been working on it simply because I seem to need to do this more and more lately since I am called upon to play very long sustained notes on the bigger woodwinds (Bass clarinet and Bari sax) mainly. It sounds awful in the orchestra and they are depending on you to hold a long sustained low note and you run out of gas somewhere in the tie and break the note. Thank you for posting another great video. I sincerely love your playing and your expert tips.
The first time I heard of and watched someone successfully circular breathe was a trumpet player. Your cheeks aren't puffed 100% of the time, only the moment you're breathing in
Thank you sooo much. I've had a didgeridoo for a couple of years but could never figure out what circular breathing was. You've explained and demonstrated it so well that I could do it the first time I tried while watching your video. I'm going to practice with the straw like you said but soon I hope to be playing the instrument. Thanks!!!
BECAUSE MUSIC IS AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee and Minecraft's ok i guess xD
You're a genius with sound and explanation. My 10-year -old son is sitting next to me blowing bubble practicing this technique and he's starting to get it in the 10 minutes. Sure, he'll need more practice, but this is ingenuous. Thank you!
That was absolutely amazing...i started on bflat clarinet in 3rd grade. My instructor tried to make me switch to alto and bass clarinet I played those for 3 years and always felt like my talent wasn't being harnessed. So I demanded to play b flat again. I ended up first chair from 9th grade until i graduated. But this video just made me appreciate the talent and amazing sounds i could've created on the bass! AMAZING!
Absolutely fabulous, I play bagpipes and noticed one of my favorite players doesn’t take obvious breaths, I looked into it and found it was circular breathing, I tried a lot of other tutorials but none helped quite like this one, it really has taken 10 minutes to learn!! Thanks !!
I learned to circle breathe in literally 5 minutes, but I the cheek force isn't enough to play my trumpet, when I blow out with cheeks, I only blow air not enough to create a buzz
TheJoeyCheng it can work for trombone, baritone, and other ones to. Euphonium and tuba are the hardest because the bells are bigger and because the tubes gradually get larger=more air is used to play. If u can do it on the tuba, your a god. The trombone, baritone and trumpet are easier because the bells are smaller. I'm in 8th grade and it took me a month to get it down fully and I play the tenor sax and euphonium. It's harder to do it on lower notes so I would recommend doing on higher notes first and than gradually go lower by a couple of notes after each week. I used this and helped me learn it faster and easier
Picking up my clarinet for the first time in 20 years to learn the clarinet part in my favorite Mountain Goats song, and there are some long slow trills in there. I knew the basic mechanics of circular breathing but had never actually learned, and your teaching style is so approachable, informative, and encouraging. Just what this 30-something needed to get going on a new thing, thank you!
I am so glad I found your videos! I play the bass clarinet, and it is so nice to see someone teaching and playing on a bass clarinet. I have had some wonderful teachers, but they have all been clarinetists that have only dabbled with the bass clarinet. Which to me, is a whole different instrument. Please keep these videos coming!
I knew about square breathing, but after watching this video and reading the comments, I now know about circular breathing and triangle breathing. Im excited to learn about pentagonal and hexagonal breathing next. And then I’ll move on to 3D and learn cylindrical and cubic breathing
I have tried this for years, again and again. This video helped so much. I swear I tried one minute (very slowly) and it worked. Finally! Thank you so much!
This is actually really amazing. One of the greatest band teachers I ever had was a man named Jim Obanion. He plays damn near everything but 1st and foremost he played trumpet . he owned trumpet like it was an extension of his face lol. He dedicated an entire week to circular breathing. Keep in mind this was back in 1987 so I can't recall if he was able to actually do this but I do remember him including it as part of the curriculum.
Thanks for your video. I think this is the best tutorial on YT for circular breathing, very straight forward, simple language, great bubble blowing example. I'll have a go at this as I'm convinced it will help my trumpet playing.
UPDATE GUYS, I learnt this for a bit and what not, so last yr I was in beginner band ahah and they do breathing exercises and stuff, so they were like 'let’s see who can hold a concert B flat the longest' And I was like 'yay less gooooo' so I ended up using it and was the last one going, and the conductor looked at me and everyone was hearing me sniff and breath (cuz I couldn’t do it quietly) and was like 'WOAH SHE BREATHING AND PLAYING SAME TIME' (ahahha) and then I died out, and the conductor was like 'woah, does anybody know what she was doing? What it’s called?' And one of the saxophones yelled out 'CHEATING!' HAHHAHA. (Keep in mind we were all yr sevens, all about 2? months into playing so I was horrible at circular breathing but now I’m in a higher band :D)
I perfected the straw and bubbles technique but when i switch to the clarinet or sax the mouthpiece is bigger than the straw and the hole technique goes out the window.
Im a freshman in high school and I showed this to my teacher and he was really impressed. I will be using this for jazz solos after I practice some more thanks for the straw demonstration it helped me alot and im sure it goes for others aswell.

thank you so much, i finally got a victory royal in fortnight using this technique
Dude we almost have the same name
pinch the straw to simulate resistance That's sooooo funny I play the FLUTE
Thank you!
Huge thanks!!!
Pinching the straw is what makes it (you) genius!
It kinda is impossible to do on Trumpet if you've been taught not to puff your cheeks.
Yeahhhhhhhh
The first time I heard of and watched someone successfully circular breathe was a trumpet player. Your cheeks aren't puffed 100% of the time, only the moment you're breathing in
But Wynton Marsalis can do it...
Same with the saxophone! I’ve been playing for eight years and it’s so hard to rid myself of it
Check out Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Dude circular breathed while playing two saxophones at the same time.
Thank you sooo much. I've had a didgeridoo for a couple of years but could never figure out what circular breathing was. You've explained and demonstrated it so well that I could do it the first time I tried while watching your video. I'm going to practice with the straw like you said but soon I hope to be playing the instrument. Thanks!!!
How did you make out? I’m trying to learn to circular breathe for the didgeridoo as well.
I play alto sax and I have tried to learn this for the past 5 years and this video helped so much
How long did it take you to learn after watching this video?
Halfway I just gave up and started blowing big bubbles😂😂
Evelyn Aparicio 😂😂

I once passed out trying to blow up a balloon... This might be a step too far
You're a genius with sound and explanation. My 10-year -old son is sitting next to me blowing bubble practicing this technique and he's starting to get it in the 10 minutes. Sure, he'll need more practice, but this is ingenuous. Thank you!
I play the oboe and your explanation is really useful. Thank you very much for sharing it so well explained.
Why am I watching this...
I don’t even breathe
me neither.........
Who breathes in 2021

Build up was worth it
That was absolutely amazing...i started on bflat clarinet in 3rd grade. AMAZING!
As a clarinet player, I've been wanting to learn circular breathing for so long and this is very helpful!
This has vastly improved my organ skills. Thank you for the tutorial, very cool.
Absolutely fabulous, I play bagpipes and noticed one of my favorite players doesn’t take obvious breaths, I looked into it and found it was circular breathing, I tried a lot of other tutorials but none helped quite like this one, it really has taken 10 minutes to learn!! Thanks !!
Finally! now I don’t blow square breaths and make square balloons!
I learned to circle breathe in literally 5 minutes, but I the cheek force isn't enough to play my trumpet, when I blow out with cheeks, I only blow air not enough to create a buzz
手間なしブライトBleach I play trumpet to :P
Trumpets ftw
Does this work for brass I struments like trombone
So I shouldn't be watching this?
Picking up my clarinet for the first time in 20 years to learn the clarinet part in my favorite Mountain Goats song, and there are some long slow trills in there.
I knew the basic mechanics of circular breathing but had never actually learned, and your teaching style is so approachable, informative, and encouraging. Just what this 30-something needed to get going on a new thing, thank you!
Wow. The water and straw trick helped immensely. I thought I would never get it but after 5 minutes I can start to circular breathe. Thanks so much!
“Rubs hands together” Well, time to get the old fifth grade recorder out
There's nothing simple about a drinking straw, my friend.
I can't tell if this is a joke or not😂😂😂 it sure it funny
I have tried this for years, again and again. This video helped so much. I swear I tried one minute (very slowly) and it worked. Finally! Thank you so much!
this comment section tho😂

This is actually really amazing. One of the greatest band teachers I ever had was a man named Jim Obanion. He plays damn near everything but 1st and foremost he played trumpet . he owned trumpet like it was an extension of his face lol. He dedicated an entire week to circular breathing. Keep in mind this was back in 1987 so I can't recall if he was able to actually do this but I do remember him including it as part of the curriculum.
As a pianist this skill really helps with my playing and how long I can play for thank you, oh wait
As someone beginning to learn the duduk (an instrument that does actually need circular breathing), thank you so much for this video! Very helpful.
This was a helpful lesson. I've been trying to do circular breathing for didgeridoo, and this was the clearest demonstration. Now to get practicing!
Absolutely spectacular explanation, Michael! I have tried this before, but now I am inspired to get after it!!
Learning to play the didgeridoo! Has really helped. Before I could never grasp the technique!
I had to learn this for a trumpet solo i had to do in high-school and the way you explained it so clear and easy to understand
Thanks for your video. I think this is the best tutorial on YT for circular breathing, very straight forward, simple language, great bubble blowing example. I'll have a go at this as I'm convinced it will help my trumpet playing.
This is going to help me play the banjo so much easier now
Omg as a pianist I agree
UPDATE GUYS, I learnt this for a bit and what not, so last yr I was in beginner band ahah and they do breathing exercises and stuff, so they were like 'let’s see who can hold a concert B flat the longest'
And I was like 'yay less gooooo' so I ended up using it and was the last one going, and the conductor looked at me and everyone was hearing me sniff and breath (cuz I couldn’t do it quietly) and was like 'WOAH SHE BREATHING AND PLAYING SAME TIME' (ahahha) and then I died out, and the conductor was like 'woah, does anybody know what she was doing? What it’s called?' And one of the saxophones yelled out 'CHEATING!' HAHHAHA. (Keep in mind we were all yr sevens, all about 2? months into playing so I was horrible at circular breathing but now I’m in a higher band :D)
I’ve always wanted to do that lol.
I perfected the straw and bubbles technique but when i switch to the clarinet or sax the mouthpiece is bigger than the straw and the hole technique goes out the window.
garfield lawrence you don't use a mouthpiece, you use reeds. Brass instruments use reeds.
N Lin sarcastic? Or just plain dumb?
N Lin oh I though you weren't joking nvm.
garfield lawrence did you find a way out of the obstacle cause same is happening to me
CrazySomebody12 tf are you talking about
As a violinist I find this very helpful. My playing has for sure improved since this video
pianist and drummer here! so helpful, now i can show off to the rest of my band!
jokes aside this is great as i also like to play occasional saxophone
For some reason I thought this would somehow be useful for vocals...
Adrian Cruz you're not alone
it is if you rap, listen to 'kaancepts' by K.A.A.N. its really cool how he uses it

4:51 OH MY GOOODNESS HOW IS GE SO GOOD AT PLAYING THE STRAW!??!?!??!
This is SO MUCH SIMPLER than other tutorials - thanks so much for sharing this with the world!
I actually understand what I need to do now!
Im a freshman in high school and I showed this to my teacher and he was really impressed. I will be using this for jazz solos after I practice some more thanks for the straw demonstration it helped me alot and im sure it goes for others aswell.
