Learn To Circular Breathe on Didgeridoo by Developing The Abs, Cheeks and Jaw Muscles

  • Many people try to learn to circular breathe without having the proper foundation in place. The exercises presented in this video show you how to develop the individual components that go into circular breathing, particularly the abdominal muscles (abs) and the cheeks, jaw and muscles of the mouth cavity.
    Once you have mastered these “building block” techniques, learning to circular breathe will be so much easier. One of the main things I see is that people try to learn circular breathing before they can consistently make a good quality drone. We recommend that you first learn to develop sound quality, then learn to control the abs, cheeks, and jaw by practicing each one in isolation. Once you have good facility over these foundational elements, you can begin to put the pieces together and form the larger circular breathing system.

    A good way to visualize this would be to think of bagpipe mechanics. Your mouth and cheeks become the bag and the cheek muscles are the force squeezing out the air rather than the arm for bagpipes.

    It would be helpful if you made a vid of the basics of circular breathing wearing a slim shirt that shows very clearly, the motions of your stomach as you breathe. The bulky sweater makes it difficult to get the full picture...Thanks for your fantastic tutorials. getting there...

    Circular breathin is my only struggle with the didge, I am great on everything else. I cannot figure out what it is that I am doing wrong when it comes to filling my cheeks with air on the ab push! this is super helpful though, I sure that with enough views and practice I will have it down in no time

    one question, if I have one nostril with around 85-90% of ari flow block (yes I need surgery for fixing that), am I so fucked up that it will be impossible to reach circular breathing????

    I was wondering if you could help please? When I am playing if I try to change anything about my cheeks (suck them in, blow them out) I lose the seal or my lips stop vibrating completely. Would I benefit from a smaller mouth piece or is it just a case of developing my cheek muscles?

    Hey man! Awesome videos--I'm beginning--but after you do the two step/beat ab-cheek-ab-cheek when do you inhale? Am I supposed to just do all of that on an exhale and then take a break, inhale, and start over?

      Hi Matt, AJ here. Yes, at first you do all of the ab-cheek alternations on one long exhalation. Later you will add the inhales at the same time you are squeezing your cheeks. Cheers -AJ

    I bought a fairly cheap didge on amazon..not much back pressure at all. I have been trying circular breathing for EVER and still can’t keep the drone while taking a breath. Would a didge with more back pressure be better to learn on? If so...do you have a suggestion on a good one without breaking the bank?

    I am really good at filling my mouth with air and squeezing it out with my cheeks and getting the high pitched farting sound you make in the video. However, when I add the didge, I am still making the high pitch farting sound. What the heck? And yes, I am able to play a drone sound while buzzing my lips. Any suggestions?

      Great meeting you this weekend Matt. I'm going to answer your question here for the benefit all viewers. Essentially, when playing the didgeridoo, you need to place this exercise in the middle of a longer continuous drone, which is a long air stream both before and after the cheek squeeze. So I like to think of it as 1) long air stream, 2) squeeze cheeks, and 3) continue with the long airstream. Does that help to clarify?

    Can an a person limited to stand up laying in bed play the instrument or the back has to be straight? This would be very good practice meditate creative thing for him but can’t rise or sit

      I have played laying on my back many times. It’s a little strange because saliva sometimes drips down into your throat, however it works fine. Good luck!

    When inhaling should my abs be pushing inwards or outwards? I've always been told to make sure they go outward because that uses your diaphragm rather than your lungs. Is this true?

      Hey Anthony, AJ here. When you inhale the belly expands, meaning your abs relax and move outwards. When you exhale you engage the abs and push them in. The diaphragm is the muscle that draws air in. When you are exhaling the diaphragm is relaxed. Cheers, AJ

    I have a terrible problem. I learnt how to do circular breathing, but when I'm doing the drone, I cannot stay there maintaining the sound because I don't know how to keep that pression with my mouth and cheeks. Can you help me?

      Hola Jesús, AJ here. For you it would be best to practice the cheek rhythm exercises in this video WITHOUT doing circular breathing. This will help you strengthen your cheek muscles. Do this for 10 minutes a day and within a week or two you should start seeing improvement when you start adding the inhalations. Cheers, AJ
