    Trying to fix the same thing - reflashed the bios and it seems to be booting but I'm getting no display output. I see you said the vbios was also dead - any tips on locating the vbios chip? Can't seem to find anything about it searching online.

      It's been ages since I fixed it. If I remember correctly the vbios chip was an 8 pin chip somewhere on the board near the GPU die.
      You'll probably have to look at each IC and Google the text written on the chip to figure it out.

    You can use the CH341A to reflash the bios.

      That's exactly what I did in the end. The vbios and the system BIOS were both dead.

      @@NewRetroRepair I think this is exactly my problem.
      One thing though, the laptop would force a hard reset every time I tried to play a game. Would sometimes happen 1 minute in, sometimes would work for over an hour. You never knew. I checked the logs after every crash, and it was a power spike causing the crash.
      Does that sound familiar? Do you think it could be the same problem as this laptop here?

      @@connorbaz5980 I don't think so. It could be the GPU boosting the frequency and thus needing the extra power to operate. If the cooling is insufficient it may have switched itself off to protect against thermal damage. You may just need to apply fresh thermal paste and clean out the fans to get it back up and running.

      @@NewRetroRepair thanks for the reply. I'll see if I can get to the CPU and try your recommendation. That said, the laptop appeared to die on me - but now it just gives a black screen when I boot up. It does play the annoying startup sound so I *know* it's running, the image just isn't being displayed. Time for more troubleshooting lol.
      That said, the last time I opened the case I noticed what looked like fragments of a broken magnet - but although it looked like one visually, it wasn't magnetic and appeared to be (possibly) magnesium.

      @@connorbaz5980 that sounds like it could be a broken inductor. It could be that the GPU power rail has failed and blew out an inductor. It'd explain why you get sound but no picture. Just a guess on my part though. How big is the damaged component?

    So you can replace this laptop or not?

    • @NewRetroRepair
      @NewRetroRepair  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was just a corrupt system bios and vbios in the end. I just used a CH340 programmer to re-flash them both and it came back to life no problem.

    • @NewRetroRepair
      @NewRetroRepair  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kevfleth there's not as I didn't film it. I used a CH340 programmer and clipped it into both the bios chip and vbios chip. I then flashed the laptop bios and an Nvidia vbios for the graphic chip I was able to find online. Those are the rough steps for it at least.

      @@NewRetroRepair Hello, I'm having the same problem on my predator helios, Do i necesarily need a ch340 programmer to reflash the bios, or can I do it by placing the .fd file on a usb and booting it with fn+esc? I was looking at acer community forum posts and that was what they were doing for some of the aspire series of laptops, but I'm not sure if its safe to do the same method on my predator helios. I tried looking at the laptops documentation page but couldn't find any details about how to reflash the bios.

      I don't think the particular model I bought is available on Amazon anymore. You might just need to Google around for it
