    When they are black they are pre-pupae. Once they stop moving, they have pupated. At this stage they avoid the wet areas which is where you placed them for starts.
    Adults also don't eat but drink water. This way they live longer and lay more eggs. Also they don't lay eggs directly on their food so things like gazettes, cardboard, paper would work nicely

    Thanks for sharing your home- scale BSF breeding model. Its amazing how they grow in a short period of time, having short lifecycles. The possibilities with BSF are amazing for long term sustainable programs.

    This is really cool! One thing I don't understand is why the adult fly larvae would climb up the pipes and fall into the collection pot?

      Cos once they mature and ready to mate they have to go to a dry area with light, inorder to lay eggs.

    I'm learning about these and I see 2 problems based on what others say (I have no personal experience). 1) the liquid needs to be fed to earthworms or composted before giving to plants. 2) the flies want to lay eggs in small areas like corrugated plastic or corrugated cardboard or blocks of wood tied together, NOT on the food. House flies lay eggs on the food directly.

    • @OrchidFlame
      @OrchidFlame ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Inaccurate. The liquid can be fed to plants as is, though would be better diluted as it may be too hot.

    I threw a bucket of larvae into the ditch. because at the time I didn't know it was useful. At first I wanted to make organic compost using kitchen waste. after a few weeks of me opening the bucket lid, I was shocked and very amused to see the larvae full in the bucket and moving in motion. I told my husband to throw away the bucket.

    Did you use dried BSFL to start? Or do I need some live ones to get it going? Also, does the food/compost ever go down in volume so it's not overfilled?
    Sorry, I'm new to this idea but I'd rather feed my chickens something I can make for them, rather than commercial feed.

    • @organicfoodera
      @organicfoodera  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I started with prepupa to get flies first. You have to start with live larvae! The compost always go down more and more. After a few weeks/months you can put some ready compost out and can put it to your plants!

    • @CarolinaGirlCreationZ
      @CarolinaGirlCreationZ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@organicfoodera where might I buy the prepupa? Is that an online thing or should I look at feed stores maybe? I love in a very small town so they might be hard to find locally. Thank you so much for your feedback! I appreciate it so much! ❤️

    • @organicfoodera
      @organicfoodera  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CarolinaGirlCreationZ just search in a pet shop for BSFL larvae. It could also be bsf baby-larvae - thats no problem. They have to eat and grow in your bin, until they become pre-pupa and flies.

      I will say, having naturally occuring BSFL in a compost bin, it smells a lot better than my hot compost bin. They devour the food at an insane rate. You won't believe your eyes. When you open it up to add kitchen scrubs, do the flies go everywhere? Could I do the set up in my basement? What do you do with the flies?

    • @organicfoodera
      @organicfoodera  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thank you for your question! In the old design, it was true that some flies could escape when opening the bin to add kitchen scraps. However, in our new design-featured in our DIY tutorial (learn.ofera.at/p/how-to-build-black-soldier-fly-farming-bin-from-scratch-diy-video-tutorial)-this issue has been greatly improved. The flies naturally move upward from the dark environment of the bin into the designated flies mating bin at the top, where they tend to stay. This setup significantly reduces the chance of flies escaping.
      Also, it’s worth noting that Black Soldier Flies are completely harmless, unlike houseflies. They don’t spread diseases and aren’t a nuisance in any way. This makes them safe to keep, even indoors. If you’re considering setting up your bin in the basement, it should work well as long as the space is ventilated. Let me know if you have more questions! 😊

    have the bowl have a hole in the bottom piped into the fish tank - then the fall into the fish tank automatically!

      Great idea! But you better should use a ramp upwards to the fish tank. Larvae crawl upwards and are always searching for a dry places for pupa-stadium.

    • @organicfoodera
      @organicfoodera  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ChristianHardt-i2h 25 degrees is the optimum. If it‘s colder larvae need much more time to develop. BSF Larvae prefer wet substrate which smells more than dry one. It’s also depending what you feed and how much. Veggie Kitchen scraps smell less than meat, cheese or any animal based scraps.

      They are an excellent source of protein and calcium, making an excellent addition to livestock feed (and us, if we were so willing). They produce finished compost at an unbelievable rate (we have some breeding naturally in our compost in the summer) with their ferocious eating. I, personally, want to breed them for my bearded dragon (who otherwise needs regular calcium supplementation, and for our chickens who also need regular calcium supplement.
