Westside Barbell | Louie Simmons & Chuck Volgelpohl on Squat technique in 1993

  • Louie Simmons and Chuck Vogelpohl takes us through a video on squat technique and box squat technique. This is how they teach the squat and box squat at westside barbell and have done for decades. Notice that this was before monolift so they still work on walking out the bar. This tape is form 1993 when Westside still was at a commercial gym.
    Westside Barbell is a world famous gym in the west side of Columbus. The trainer Louie Simmons has a unconventional training method called the Conjugate method. Be developed this method in the 80s based on russian training. In 1986 one of his lifters squted 1010 lbs / 458 kg, the heavyest squat ever!

      ​@@jbrandona119Absolutely. To me, in the later episodes Louie sounds like he had a stroke or something; very unclear pronounciation and trouble finding words

      Strengthen your back then. A great squat requires a strong back. I actually trained at WS for awhile and that’s the key

    I have learned the vertical shin style of squatting but I have been having trouble lately with carrying the bar too low and thought I would be onto something if I try moving it a bit higher. Then this video shows up in my feed! Thanks!

      I'm trying to learn the verticle shin squat. Been difficult. Weak hamstrings doesn't help lol.

      this is low bar, he was just saying dont go too low or you can lose tension at the bottom

      This is not a "how to squat" guide for developing strength or muscle hypertrophy.
      This is a "how to squat" guide for hitting big numbers on SPF meets with high ass squats in full gear.

      when it comes to gear you need to fight to keep your lower back straight , that's what they mean by cueing arch . They don't actually squat with an arched lower back , it's neutral .

    I don’t think chuck ever broke parallel in a squat before ever. I saw him do a lot of half squats with huge weights, but never did I see him break parallel. I saw louie do a half squat with 920 lbs.

      I've been saying that for years, ha ha ha. The only lifter I saw actually take it down below parallel with big weight was Andy Bolton and this other guy from Russia. Same set up and squatting technique, but they actually took it down to proper level. Dave Hoff, is another one that is certainly in the half squat category. But if you say that about Chuck or Dave or whoever, oh do the fan boys get mad, ha ha ha! :D
