He had skill but he was outmatched in terms of machines and Marida baited him into trying to take a stab at her exposed cockpit. It wouldn't have mattered even if she didn't blast him with her engines. The I-field would have deflected it and he'd still be dead. But a rank and file Neo Zeon? He would likely come out on top unless they were equally seasoned and skilled.

The Stark Jegan pilot was likely a veteran of the Axis incident. He knew to engage at close range to counter the funnel bits, and discarded his extra weight to close the distance quickly. When you're dealing with funnels, the best course of action is close the range, since most funnel equipped mobile suits rely on staying out off effective range. Dude knew what he was doing.
To add to that, his first 380mm hyper bazooka shot forced the Kshatriya to devote attention towards avoiding the 380mm scatter shot instead of controlling the funnels, whereas the 6 missiles that follow after detonated behind the Kshatriya to force it to move forward, which allowed the Stark Jegan to discard his armament and close the remaining distance.
Special forces type unit. Good chance he was a special forces pilot. Top training, top marks. Unicorn did a DAMN good job at making sure even the mook suits like this were scaled to their apparent skill level. Previous gundam series have been like "These are the top pilots in (whatever faction), Oh, they got absolutely nuked by a single shot". Unicorn's writing was a LOT tighter.

On paper they should be kicking the ass of some kid who barely has logged in more than 5 minutes of combat experience. Most recent example of IBO. All but three named antagonists in that series were clobbered easily when they fought Mikazuki. 2 used special suits, and only 1 stood up to him in the entire series in normal machines before becoming allies. Only one nameless grunt in that entire IBO series even put up a fight against that character and it only lasted maybe 15 seconds of screen time; that being the suicidal grunt during atmospheric re-entry. This is why I can appreciate UC a little more. Grunts tend to shine far more often.
The Jegan pilot was using a mass produced elite suit equipped especially for attacking ships and not head to head fighting, they had no known Newtype abilities and were fighting a newtype in a highly advanced custom suit, and still almost won, the Stark Jegan pilot is likely the pilot with the most sheer skill in all of atleast the Universal Century

Also love how he doesn't make the common mistake of trying to shoot them down, he charges fast enough to throw off their aim and goes right for the unit that deployed them. Y’know, it just occurred to me why the Jegan pilot does this. The Jegan pilot intentionally rotates the beam saber clash and positions himself so that the sun is behind him which, in turn, causes his MS to eclipse the sun. As a result, this should cause eclipse blindness/retinal burns for any opponent(s) facing him. That being said, I’m sure all mobile suits in this time are equipped to deal with common hazards such as eclipse blindness. Either way, the Jegan pilot is obviously on a different league.
Lets see, he unloaded all of his missiles at this single target, said missiles are made for taking out ships from the looks of it, ejected the spent weapons to lighten load, then boosted forward towards the enemy, ignoring the funnels, as he knows that trying to take them out is a waste of time and that the enemy will be staying out of range. He closed in for a melee and even tried to use the sun to blind the enemy by having it behind him. He almost won if it wasn't for the enemies tanky form.

But looking at the historical context of the UC timeline, supporting the Earth Federation government is equivalent to supporting slaveholders in the 19th century. Spacenoid independence is inevitable, and that entire decade of bloodshed was the result of the Federation's unwillingness or inability to peacefully transition power to the sides.
So they give names to one off characters who you don’t even see. But they never name this badass who almost Beat the NZ-666 Kshatriya. Apparently he was a veteran from Char’s counterattack
y'know I never noticed this because I always watched this version of the scene dubbed but in english they made the pilots last words sound as if its coming from open comms/radio but in the JP version they gave his voice the same echo effect when hearing someones thoughts as a newtype. Implying that Marida with cyber newtype awareness was simply sensing his last thoughts. Kinda gave the scene a new dimension when I realized this. can't help but wonder if it was a misstep or misinterpretation on the dubbing teams end or something. At any rate I loved this fight from top to bottom. Explosive way to really hook you into the start of this series
he definitely did say, "Damn Sleeves" But, in the Jap version it sounded like a newtype thought (with the echo sound effect) as opposed to him actually, physically saying, "Damn Sleeves" I think marida heard it as his last dying thought. Just as the original poster said I wish the dub did a better job of carrying this nuance through.

I never noticed this before but that last Jegan barely survived those funnels because his suit got hit while deploying his beam saber. At first I thought it was just the arm, but that been went right through his arm through the suites right side of the torso which you see later one the close up of his bisected suit. Got to give the Fed engineers some credit here for designing something that could still function after a hit like that.
He got hit but he certainly did the right thing, the reason pilots die so often to funnels is because they sit still and try to shoot them down, you ignore the funnels charge in so they cant easily target you and kill the mobile suit that deployed them.
I watched this directly after CCA. Needless to say, I was absolutely blown away by this scene. The re-imagining of Mobile Suit combat while staying true to the original.
Considering the weaponry and the power and the performance of the kysatria its so damn impressive how the stark jegan pilot did so well with a grunt suit
I think it did show that Marida and the Kshatriya were badass. After all she instantly knew that in cqc the more slender mobile suit has the advantage, so she used her thrusters to push the Jegan away which was very creative. Unlike relying on beam and funnel spam like some spiky haired twink that shall not be named.

After watching Top Gun Maverick that SU-57 bandit pilot doing the Kvochur Bell manoeuvre to dodge a missile reminded me of the Stark Jegan pilot. Unknown side characters exhibiting main character energy in short periods to become unforgettable.

A salute to that nameless Stark Jegan pilot. Guy was more of an ace than many of the main cast of most Gundam shows. Think of how good he would have done in something like the Narrative or a true ace suit

Ironically enough, the way Marida won was from a Feddie tactic we saw with Kou in Stardust using the thrusters to blind his opponent for a moment and create distance.
0:57/2:34 The sheer *POWER* behind those thrusters... 1:34 The Jegan Commander (JC) saw his wingmen get shredded inside of 15 seconds (1:19-1:32) and realized distance was a survivability problem. Harkens back to "Return of the Jedi" where Lando Calrissian ordered the Rebel fleet to close distance with the Imperial fleet, shelving the DS2's superlaser by making friendly fire a very real threat. 1:44 The team was kitted for anti-ship, not expecting a concealed escort (0:30). Rather than dump his munitions, the JC opted to use his weapons for flak while shedding weight before dumping the launcher shell (1:58). Freed of the dead weight, he dashed in, taking a hit (2:07) in the process. 2:28 Sabers locked and moving in 3 axes (XYZ). 2:31 The shifting sunlight in the panoramic cockpit (0:16). Also, the JC's encounter on-screen lasted a full minute (1:33-2:34)...
This guy made me think for a second that he could have won. But then I remembered it's a Gundam series, he's a federation grunt, and we did not see his face. While we had a brief introduction to the Sleeves.
Hot damn, the Jegan pilot (Frost) was a beast, if it weren't for those 4 wings he could've ended Marida with that strike. The way he moves too, its hard to believe he could move the Jegan with such flexibility, cuz i think mass produced models are a bit rigid, and most of the special models like the gundams or Hyaku shiki are somehow? always flexible when it comes to mobility. Dude is awsome af
2:15 pretty much illustrates just how different their suits were in terms of maneuverability. The kshatriya straight up just turns around while the stark jegan still had to reorient itself to get a clear shot. I'm still pretty salty that he lost though lmao

Which is exactly the wrong way to deal with funnels unless you're also a newtype who can actually hit the funnels reliably. As Stark Jeganbro showed off, the correct method is to close to melee with the unit deploying the funnels.
Just pulled a stark jegan in Gundam Line its a 4star which means its respected by the game devs and isnt going to be powercreeped too hard, still fucking awesome
That Stark Jegan pilot seemed to have figured out how to counter the funnel beforehand. We were able to break through the long range attack by the funnel and bring it into close combat.
This fight single-handedly landed the Stark Jegan in my top 3 grunt MS of all time, if not number 1. I know it’s technically an elite-use machine piloted by a veteran, but still; to see the Kshatriya, a custom new-type used mobile suit do *that* to two machines not far behind yours in terms of overall performance and still have the bravery to take it on by yourself and honestly do pretty well is an act I can’t not respect 🫡 To bad the cockpit wasn’t higher up 😔
Tfw you win 3 to one and respond to every tactic deployed by the enemy without taking so much as a single scratch and everyone thinks you almost lost. To be fair, fights against the regular rank and file usually end much more quickly in Gundam. The Jegan pilot must be commended for that piloting but it still feels like a stretch to say it was close.
Dude just the reactor of her machine is like 10x as more powerful then the jegan without the funnels it would still be hard to defeat even for a gundam type that Isn't the unicorn and so impressive he atleast kept up and was even able to reach her without getting obliterated by funnels with a grunt suit

You know marida could've ended the stark jegan battle in numerous different ways but she chose to pull out her beam saber too almost as if she wanted to test him to see if he was really made of stenner stuff rather if it was out of preference or not doesn't take away the fact she's quite the gundam worthy pilot Maybe this Mecha was actually perfect for her but I vouch for something in the mixtures of a silver bullet or sinanju ( a good mixture of Firepower and melee or maybe full melee like Exia or barbatos )
@True_Odd When new types use funnels they have to focus to control them. With the Jegan pilot going full speed at her, they would have taken too long to catch up with him and she would have been at a major disadvantage in close range unless she pulled out something to defend herself with then and there. His best option was to go all in to stop her from using the funnels and take her out before she can focus and bring them back. Meanwhile she had to defend herself in melee due to the tactic. Almost worked out for him until she used her thrusters to force a distance between the two of them so she could dodge his beam saber while blinding him in the process so she can bisect him.
This. This right here is unfortunate. For all this unsung hero's badassery he just wasn't strong enough to best Marida. But let's be honest, she can single handedly pick a kid up by his ankle. She's just on another level entirely.
No sounds coming from her docking funnels is an excellent attention to detail that most would overlook. Just cockpit ambient silence. We might hear the fight & the music, but for them, in space ? All they here is their own UI button mashing & maybe some thuds upon tactile impact with sabers & metal
From what I understand her suit was equipped with an anti beam coating, im sure that thrusting away helped lengthen the distance, but he had her dead to rights. Look at the distance of both suits relative to eachother, if she was in attack distance so was he, the beam coating saved her. This comes down to who has a better suit, as the jegan pilot was far better at analyzing the battle, he dropped priority on the funnels to attack marida head on.
Everyone says that but that's only because we've never seen another really good Jegan pilot (Kayra was mediocre). The Kshatriya has an i-field around the cockpit, you see it deflect a direct hit from the Unicorn in the beginning of Ep.2. He was dead the moment she launched. The Stark Jegan pilot fanboys put so much emphasis on him but nothing he did was overly special or even abnormal. This guy realized he was being attacked by a funnel equipped MS so he purged his armor to act as a decoy. Mobile suits had been using dummies to distract enemies since Zeta. He attacked the Kshatriya because he knew fighting the funnels was a lost cause. The mobile suit they came from is big and much easier to engage. Not a great leap of deduction. Plus if he closes the gap, she has to fight him and can't control the funnels. By this point in the UC timeline, people have been fighting Newtypes long enough to realize there are weaknesses to their reliance on remote weapons. He tried to maneuver to get the advantage. I see this used as justification for the praise heaped on this guy. So what? Any combat pilot whether they fly WWI biplanes or space fighters is going to do that. And ultimately, he went for an easy kill, arrogantly believing his parry had left the mobile suit he knew nothing about vulnerable. The fact that she made no effort to block him wasn't because she was unable, but because she baited his ass. She knew he was going for a stab and let him commit to it because she knew she could over power him. He wasn't special. He was exactly what someone trained to fight in a multi-million dollar giant robot should be: competent. But that goes to show how poorly the EFSF is portrayed when people have to treat one of the few good non-protags like some kinda of quasi-Feddie Chuck Norris just because he managed to dodge the funnels and survived more than one pass with a beam saber.
Also, he didn't really dodge the funnels as well as people claim. If you stop the video just before she cuts him in half you can see he took a direct hit to the chest near the cockpit at some point. In fact, it looks like the funnel beam went through his suit's arm into the chest as he was deploying his beam saber.
She defeated the other two with weaponry, but credit where credit due. She outsmarted the Jegan pilot here by using her own thrusters to distance from his thrust and blind him before bisecting him. She also avoided every one of his accurate and well placed shots and even avoid the first one by countering her own acceleration with reverse thrusters. All this after taking out his two wingmen first before going after him, the bigger threat. The Jegan pilot however still managed to put up a hell of a fight with the odds against him. Funnels, a new type pilot with better spec suit. He survived two wave of funnels and still kept fighting despite the Damage to his suit from her second wave that went right through the torso and arm. He just fell short because he was fighting a new type with a machine he probably never encountered before.

The English dub bugs me here. At the end when the(obviously dead) Stark Jegan Pilot says "Damn Sleeves!" the audio effect over his voice sounds more like it's coming through a radio rather than the echo of a spirit. And no, you can't convince me he wasn't dead 'just yet', he was sliced in half by a beam saber! The heat energy alone would have cooked whatever was left of him and the suit's radio equipment instantly.
I saw this scene in Dub first and always thought it was the Feds cursing the "Sleeves" over the radio. I only recently found out it was his "thought waves/spirit" speaking.

@@jeff3221 Technically, Londo Bell is just the AEUG/Karaba formally established as a regular Federation military unit. Hell, they even operate out of the Nahel Argama. But looking at the historical context of the UC timeline, supporting the Earth Federation government is equivalent to supporting slaveholders in the 19th century. Spacenoid independence is inevitable, and that entire decade of bloodshed was the result of the Federation's unwillingness or inability to peacefully transition power to the sides.
So they give names to one off characters who you don’t even see. But they never name this badass who almost Beat the NZ-666 Kshatriya. Apparently he was a veteran from Char’s counterattack

y'know I never noticed this because I always watched this version of the scene dubbed but in english they made the pilots last words sound as if its coming from open comms/radio but in the JP version they gave his voice the same echo effect when hearing someones thoughts as a newtype. Implying that Marida with cyber newtype awareness was simply sensing his last thoughts. Kinda gave the scene a new dimension when I realized this. can't help but wonder if it was a misstep or misinterpretation on the dubbing teams end or something.
At any rate I loved this fight from top to bottom. Explosive way to really hook you into the start of this series

I never noticed this before but that last Jegan barely survived those funnels because his suit got hit while deploying his beam saber. At first I thought it was just the arm, but that been went right through his arm through the suites right side of the torso which you see later one the close up of his bisected suit.
Got to give the Fed engineers some credit here for designing something that could still function after a hit like that.

He got hit but he certainly did the right thing, the reason pilots die so often to funnels is because they sit still and try to shoot them down, you ignore the funnels charge in so they cant easily target you and kill the mobile suit that deployed them.
I watched this directly after CCA. Needless to say, I was absolutely blown away by this scene. The re-imagining of Mobile Suit combat while staying true to the original.

I think it did show that Marida and the Kshatriya were badass. After all she instantly knew that in cqc the more slender mobile suit has the advantage, so she used her thrusters to push the Jegan away which was very creative. Unlike relying on beam and funnel spam like some spiky haired twink that shall not be named.

A salute to that nameless Stark Jegan pilot. Guy was more of an ace than many of the main cast of most Gundam shows. Think of how good he would have done in something like the Narrative or a true ace suit
Supplementary material actually gives us a name for the Stark Jegan pilot - his name was Mike "Frost" Wilkins and he was one of the 100 pilots who flew with Amuro at Axis.
While the bit about Axis is true, the Mike "Frost" Wilkins is fanfic written by someone who thought it would be cool to see this scene from his perspective
Ironically enough, the way Marida won was from a Feddie tactic we saw with Kou in Stardust using the thrusters to blind his opponent for a moment and create distance.
That's why I love jegan pilots they are metal as hell they square up with anything.

Hot damn, the Jegan pilot (Frost) was a beast, if it weren't for those 4 wings he could've ended Marida with that strike. The way he moves too, its hard to believe he could move the Jegan with such flexibility, cuz i think mass produced models are a bit rigid, and most of the special models like the gundams or Hyaku shiki are somehow? always flexible when it comes to mobility. Dude is awsome af
2:15 pretty much illustrates just how different their suits were in terms of maneuverability. The kshatriya straight up just turns around while the stark jegan still had to reorient itself to get a clear shot. I'm still pretty salty that he lost though lmao
@@possibly8180 I guess it's that booster addon the Stark Jegan has on it's back that made him have to re-orient more. Too much booster-power. It probably helps when he's carrying those huge missiles on it's shoulders, but without it, it makes him a lot faster, but harder to stabilize.

Which is exactly the wrong way to deal with funnels unless you're also a newtype who can actually hit the funnels reliably.
As Stark Jeganbro showed off, the correct method is to close to melee with the unit deploying the funnels.

This fight single-handedly landed the Stark Jegan in my top 3 grunt MS of all time, if not number 1. I know it’s technically an elite-use machine piloted by a veteran, but still; to see the Kshatriya, a custom new-type used mobile suit do *that* to two machines not far behind yours in terms of overall performance and still have the bravery to take it on by yourself and honestly do pretty well is an act I can’t not respect 🫡

Tfw you win 3 to one and respond to every tactic deployed by the enemy without taking so much as a single scratch and everyone thinks you almost lost. To be fair, fights against the regular rank and file usually end much more quickly in Gundam. The Jegan pilot must be commended for that piloting but it still feels like a stretch to say it was close.
He nearly inflicted a killing blow at the end, with a mass produced suit. Even if she won, the grunt has the symbolic victory here for the comments.
Dude just the reactor of her machine is like 10x as more powerful then the jegan without the funnels it would still be hard to defeat even for a gundam type that Isn't the unicorn and so impressive he atleast kept up and was even able to reach her without getting obliterated by funnels with a grunt suit

You know marida could've ended the stark jegan battle in numerous different ways but she chose to pull out her beam saber too almost as if she wanted to test him to see if he was really made of stenner stuff rather if it was out of preference or not doesn't take away the fact she's quite the gundam worthy pilot

@True_Odd When new types use funnels they have to focus to control them. With the Jegan pilot going full speed at her, they would have taken too long to catch up with him and she would have been at a major disadvantage in close range unless she pulled out something to defend herself with then and there.
His best option was to go all in to stop her from using the funnels and take her out before she can focus and bring them back. Meanwhile she had to defend herself in melee due to the tactic.
Almost worked out for him until she used her thrusters to force a distance between the two of them so she could dodge his beam saber while blinding him in the process so she can bisect him.

Sorry for the late rely but yes She used the backward Thrust to stop the Stark Jegan in it's tracks so keep him from reaching.
From what I understand her suit was equipped with an anti beam coating, im sure that thrusting away helped lengthen the distance, but he had her dead to rights. Look at the distance of both suits relative to eachother, if she was in attack distance so was he, the beam coating saved her. This comes down to who has a better suit, as the jegan pilot was far better at analyzing the battle, he dropped priority on the funnels to attack marida head on.

Everyone says that but that's only because we've never seen another really good Jegan pilot (Kayra was mediocre). The Kshatriya has an i-field around the cockpit, you see it deflect a direct hit from the Unicorn in the beginning of Ep.2. He was dead the moment she launched. The Stark Jegan pilot fanboys put so much emphasis on him but nothing he did was overly special or even abnormal. This guy realized he was being attacked by a funnel equipped MS so he purged his armor to act as a decoy. Mobile suits had been using dummies to distract enemies since Zeta. He attacked the Kshatriya because he knew fighting the funnels was a lost cause. The mobile suit they came from is big and much easier to engage. Not a great leap of deduction. Plus if he closes the gap, she has to fight him and can't control the funnels. By this point in the UC timeline, people have been fighting Newtypes long enough to realize there are weaknesses to their reliance on remote weapons. He tried to maneuver to get the advantage. I see this used as justification for the praise heaped on this guy. So what? Any combat pilot whether they fly WWI biplanes or space fighters is going to do that. And ultimately, he went for an easy kill, arrogantly believing his parry had left the mobile suit he knew nothing about vulnerable. The fact that she made no effort to block him wasn't because she was unable, but because she baited his ass. She knew he was going for a stab and let him commit to it because she knew she could over power him. He wasn't special. He was exactly what someone trained to fight in a multi-million dollar giant robot should be: competent. But that goes to show how poorly the EFSF is portrayed when people have to treat one of the few good non-protags like some kinda of quasi-Feddie Chuck Norris just because he managed to dodge the funnels and survived more than one pass with a beam saber.
Also, he didn't really dodge the funnels as well as people claim. If you stop the video just before she cuts him in half you can see he took a direct hit to the chest near the cockpit at some point. In fact, it looks like the funnel beam went through his suit's arm into the chest as he was deploying his beam saber.

If the Stark Jegan had better equipment then he totally would've won. Marida's victory can be accredited solely to her suit's more advanced weaponry.
She defeated the other two with weaponry, but credit where credit due.
She outsmarted the Jegan pilot here by using her own thrusters to distance from his thrust and blind him before bisecting him. She also avoided every one of his accurate and well placed shots and even avoid the first one by countering her own acceleration with reverse thrusters. All this after taking out his two wingmen first before going after him, the bigger threat.
The Jegan pilot however still managed to put up a hell of a fight with the odds against him. Funnels, a new type pilot with better spec suit. He survived two wave of funnels and still kept fighting despite the Damage to his suit from her second wave that went right through the torso and arm. He just fell short because he was fighting a new type with a machine he probably never encountered before.

The English dub bugs me here. At the end when the(obviously dead) Stark Jegan Pilot says "Damn Sleeves!" the audio effect over his voice sounds more like it's coming through a radio rather than the echo of a spirit. And no, you can't convince me he wasn't dead 'just yet', he was sliced in half by a beam saber! The heat energy alone would have cooked whatever was left of him and the suit's radio equipment instantly.
I saw this scene in Dub first and always thought it was the Feds cursing the "Sleeves" over the radio. I only recently found out it was his "thought waves/spirit" speaking.
