I hate this kind of clickbait title where you ask a seemingly rhetorical question that implies you have a controversial opinion, then you conclude with "No, it didn't fumble season 2". Title aside though, I agree with almost everything you said. The show is overall really good, but the moments of chaos are only funny if they're rare, otherwise it feels kind of "random = funny" edit: L + ratio
You're tripping, the second season was great. It seems like a lot of your issues were that the show is done with television exposition, and that the joke style isn't as shocking the more you watch it.
On another note, if you felt the same way about season 2 that I did.. then I really hope that the people who disagree with me don't feel some sort of obligation to stroke Zach's Ego, but season 2 didn't have the same charm as season one. Charlie and Pimm were the funniest duo in S1, but they didn't feel the same way to me. Boss man was the funniest character and had some of the funniest jokes of S2.
Season two I think had higher highs but also lower lows, I like how they’re trying to making it a full cast not just the typical duo scenario at least that’s what I found
2nd season was kinda weak. I enjoyed the 1st half of season 2 more than the 2nd half. My favorite episode being the one with the scientist and his roto-scope brother.
I'm going to say that smiling friends didn't flop on season 2 because it carried what it began with the first season. It's always been a silly show. It doesn't need to be overly dark. The show continues the personalities of the main characters, but gives them the same chaotic environment it's always had.
Tbh I think the issue is that your looking for traditional show tropes you would expect from a company produced show like Rick and Morty out of something made by youtubers from Newgrounds... Dude Michael and Zach don't care about stuff like character and would rather make shit up on the spot because it's funny. note that after they do that they keep it consistent (for example in the commentary for the first season Zach and Michael break down the different types of species in the series and how old each character is, in the same 15 minute span they both constantly change Pimm's age between 21 and 24, Charlie is at least 28-29, but do say Glep is 1000's of years old which is kept in the president episode.) Zach and Michael write the show the say way two guys telling each other a bs story for a giggle would come up with stuff. they don't seem very focused on hard character development because getting too personal would take away from the funny and the point of the show smiling friends isn't really a show about Pimm and Charlie making their client smile, it's a show about make the audience slime after a dramatic day of feelings and emotions to not give a shit and just go "what the fuck, that was funny :}" Something I don't like about most shows is I can put on something like Rick and Morty to laugh and turn my brain off and it works for one episode. but the next episode Rick has a realistic existential crisis because he knows he's an asshole and doesn't want to change for anyone so he tries to kill himself. and that is going to be important to the plot later so remember his attempt. now I'm just depressed, Smiling Friends will do something like that and go "man, you didn't have to be so fuckin dramatic, just make some friends dude" and suddenly the sad thing feels like a big nothing, and they maybe bring it up again once to go "that happened" and it's done. (also i know this used to say TL:DR but I can't summarize this lmfao.)
Oh dang 19 minutes ago whats up man, honestly forget how small of a community this is because of how high quality your videos are, keep up the great work. I personally find season 2 better than 1 just in my personal opinion but I like all of the points you make

The only episode in season 2 that I thought was meh was Mr. President
I’ve heard this from a lot of people but I loved that one for some reason. It’s the Halloween episode for me, both seasons actually
