I used to have a 3.6 one of these. A truly wonderful car. Money no object and only allowed one car for the rest of my life, it would be a Range Rover. It’s harmed by the fuel consumption and tax cost. Servicing doesn’t need to be too expensive if you can DIY the basics and have a good independent specialist. Generally the car did about 26mpg over the ten years with the car but I did an economy run a few times and got her to 40mpg. Tricks were as Joel suggested, minimal acceleration so the turbos don’t spool up, anticipation, observation and using manual gear mode so you can select a high gear ASAP and lock it in.
Amazing result for the 3.6. The secret is to keep the speed down as the L322 shape is not very aerodynamic. As soon as you start nudging 70 it really drops off fast and if you can keep it 60-65 they will reward you with this kind of distance. In almost any other car going that speed feels like you are wasting time but in an L322 it’s time we’ll spent.
True also one thing people forget that Diesel cars can still continue to drive for an additional couple extra miles due to diesel engines burning the fuel and running on fumes unlike petrol engines that straight up run from the fuel itself not the fumes from the get go
you can also follow lorries about 20 feet away and get some slip stream to help the fact the range rover is a bit of a brick as far as wind resistance:-)

Got 38.8 from a l322 4.4tdv8 and average over 30 in the last 5000 miles although on route to Glasgow broke down at Penrith ah the joys of owning a Range Rover
Thoroughly enjoyed that, classic Top Gear vibes! Shame you’re giving this away, I would love to see you run it all the way to empty and find out exactly how many miles you can get out of it, a trip to Monaco and back would figure that out

I’m local to the area you visited and I noticed some b-roll footage of the Moffat road and even said out loud “that’s the Moffat road!”. As you leave Moffat heading north that view you see is called “The Devils Beef Tub” there is actually an old VW T4 transporter crashed at the bottom of it, the woman lived to tell the tale surprisingly. Nice to see that you visited The Great Polish Map of Scotland, about 5 mins from my house! Excellent video 😎
I have never filled more than 98 litres ever in my L322 . Its comforting to know you always have around 10 l when the chime goes off and it says you have 50km left .
Well done, another great video. I remember your John O' Groats to Land'send Video , you stayed overnight in the Mill Hotel New Lanark and said you'd come back, it would have been nice to see you again. May be the next time you visit our beautiful country.
Great video Joel - you mentioned that the 4.4 TDV8 is even better, and it is. I do regular 620 mile round trips to Dundee and, with my 2012 TDV8 having 83000mls on the clock, I regularly get 40mpg. They definitely get better with age!
Amazing video. I went from Yeovil to Lisbon in one tank and half with a 2005 Freelander .. it went perfectly but.....never NEVER exceed 65 mph. And you know!!! WHAT A LOVELY CAR . LOVE YOUR VIDEO
I drive 1500 miles to Spain every year , I don’t hang about 80 mph in France and if I’m honest the same in Spain 🇪🇸, it takes 3.5 tanks for the journey . Mine is the L322 3.0 litre diesel 2002 bought from new , 220k miles all done by me in the 20 years of ownership . Best car in the world ❤️
Brilliant Joel. I've just got a 2008 Vogue 3.6 with 96k on the clock. I did Basingstoke to Lanark and back few years ago, left at 5 am and got back at 11.30pm. This was driving a 3.5 petrol Shogun, I stopped for fuel 4 times as I was towing a 10 ft goods trailer. I must say I was frazzled at the end but the scenery was breathtaking in Galloway Forest Park.
On the fence over subscribing, and having watched a few of your video’s before, this one swung it. Well done. I particularly liked your reflection on how lucky we are to be free to do these things, without question or hindrance, and explore such a beautiful UK 🇬🇧 - at that point you had me 😂
I’ve had my 3.6 V8 for 4 months and had an intermittent suspension fault warning so far. Still love the Range Rover L322 for its imperious driving position and comfort and luxury.
Great video and superb, flawless and natural presenting from someone of such a young age. I’ve literally never subscribed to anything on You Tube and this is the first channel for me. Keep em coming Joel. Literally better than Top Gear or The GT which for me are now all bout the presenters and the road tests are so false. Also watched one of your videos where you openly talk about depression. Well done to you for your honestly. Total respect. Keep up the good work
Another great video. We missed you. Loved it. I do admit to having tears in my eyes and empathy for your emotion at being amongst our green and luscious land. We are very lucky to be free to do these sort of things.
Considering their reputation for reliability and durability it's a celebration anytime they complete a journey. Whether it is to the shops and back or across the country and back.
@@warrengeew The occasional reliable one is a unicorn and doesn't represent the ownership experiences of a overwhelming majority of owners. Owner's forums, reliability surveys, surveys of aftermarket warranty companies etc. all show them to be some of, if not the most, problematic vehicles on the road. Even in the UK they are #31 out of #31 marques surveyed in a recent survey. Their reputation was not earned by the company producing vehicles with stellar reliability and durability year after year.
@Hello Everyone Are you actually comparing their reliability/durability to something like a Lexus? Maintenance cannot overcome bad design. Almost ALL their competition are more reliable.
I regularly do 1200 km on trips out from Joburg onto open road in the country before hitting the reserve chime in my 3.6tdv8 , I once pushed 1278.4 before refeuling , these cars are economical once out of city limits and extremely comfortable , I did 1150 km in 11 hours , including lots of slow trucks and heavy acceleration at times , still at the 1200km mark consumption , I climbed out of this car feeling like I had been sitting on the couch for 3 hours !
Bloody brilliant. I do Horsham to Tain a few times a year in me T31 xtrail.that takes 12 hours leaving at 4am. I’ve been watching you and Sam with his old 4.4 he has been working on and I’m so wanting to get an L322 but the 4.4 Westminster. Trade the xtrail in!!
Fun video! Most cars still have 4-5 L in reserve when the fuel gauge and display are on zero, more so for diesels as an empty tank can be damaging. Designed so you should never run out of fuel! Same for the speedo which invariably reads too high.
I have a 2017 RRS with the 306PS Twin Turbo V6 3.0L diesel and I average 43-44MPG, if I `m careful and drive at 60mph on the motorway, I can get 49-50mpg, I have achieved 680 miles on 70 litres in the past. I have had it from new and now has 35k miles on the clock, it has only improved over time on consumption.
Hi M8. 2nd of June 2021, (my second day of ownership of my L322 3.6 TDV8 Vogue [lots factory fitted extras]) I drove Berwick upon Tweed to Liverpool Anfield and back in one day to attend a funeral. Obviously not the miles you have just done, BUT, I am closer to 70 years old than 60. At the end of the day, I could have had a cup of tea and set off to do it again. My hips legs and back, were better than when I set off. As for MPG. I now know how to set the screen to show me my live MPG and I can regularly get better than 36 MPG. Best car in the world, you betcha. Oh and 369 days without a mechanical fault.
Wow, that's some achievement Joel. I really enjoyed the video. I would never have believed that a Range Rover could achieve that fuel consumption. Thanks for the video, and pleased that it didn't let you down. well done.
All this drama going to Scotland and back in a modern car is bordering ridiculous. I’ve travelled from Essex to Inverness at least 100 times over many years in (at the time of journeys) , old Nissan Primera, Montego, Ford Granada Scorpio, Rover 75, Escort mk3 to name a few. All made it no problem. Only car I drove that was totally knackered when returned was a brand new hired Vauxhall Cavalier. It sounded like a bag of nails when back in sunny Essex.
Did you tell the sales assistant at the petrol station that you'd just driven to scotland yesterday and back on the one tankful? Very impressed with the result.
I do this challenge every time I go into work (I mostly work remotely but drive 2 hours in once a week) it's surprisingly relaxing I've found and I drive a ford fiesta so MPG can be averaging 80mpg on a good day. But I do sit behind lorries to minimise wind resistance which is probably a wee bit dangerous
Brilliant video Joel I don’t think anyone in the UK has recorded a video like this for a Range Rover. Better than taking the train to Scotland.. You have comfort of first class and driving in style.
Hi Joel, Just found your channel. I would like to complement you on your enthusiasm, professionalism and knowledge on the delivery of your perfectly spoken English on your reviews. other reviewers are just not able to deliver reviews with the use of the English language, as Brilliantly as you. I used to work 1800 km"s from where I lived and that was a decent drive ,if I drove it myself it was 18 hours with 1 hours sleep , if I got the bus it was 19 hours. Interesting times but I do not regret anything this has made me who I am !!!!
I saw your video on your old Range Rover, my Range was the same as yours 4.4 V8 on an 05 plate. I drove 49.9to Marbella and back with no issues back 2008. I love your videos keep up the the good work. Get a Costco card a get derv there premium is £1.49 a litre 😉
Thoroughly enjoyed this video... though the word video isn't quite right... it's a labour of love, a work of art. The filming, presenting, editing all top notch. Cheers Joel.
Great vid- can you confirm the maths.what I heard was 700 miles 93 litres Cost £400 Fuel 93 litres at £1.90 is £176.70 Mpg of 34.23 great going I have a freelander 2 and get 45mpg on a long run.
Great video and well done. A word of warning regarding the "hands free" fueling technique. It's unsafe. The fuel filler is designed to be held onto throughout the fill so that the user is earthing the car so that static doesn't build up. Letting go and then making contact again can result in a static spark and explosion from the fuel vapour. Some countries have hands free fueling and explosions from static sparks do occur.
Absolutely love this channel. I just got back to Royal Wootton Bassett from Padstow/Cornwall in my Discovery 3 towing an army Sankey trailer (loaded with around 300kg) and averaged 31 mpg!. We came off M5 at Weston Super-mare and went across through Bath. I'm stoked at that :) I do love these FFRR's. I may just have to get one.
This video needs to go viral, if not for the editing, and content, then to shush all the Range Rover haters. Absolutely fantastic video Joel, your best by far, I was gripped from start to finish. Well done buddy.
Well done Joe. Thanks for championing the Range Rover. I’ve bought my ticket so 🤞 with the raffle. Great effort. Got to be honest didn’t think you’d make it. 👏👍

Great video. I echo your sentiments about taking joy in the freedom of travel & never taking for granted the rich fruits of UK scenery. It dawned on me this morning myself while crawling along in heavy traffic around kings Lynn...
Really enjoyed this. Found your channel through your m240i videos but have since watched the TT series and now making my way down your older videos. Videos like this make me love cars all the more.
Joel I am very very impressed with what you achieved in that run to Scotland and back. I would love to have that sort of MPG in my 2006 4,2 supercharged even if it is on LPG 98% of the time! Lol I don't get much more than 12-14 MPG most of the time, but at least here in East London I only pay about 80.9 pence per litre of gas even if it does only give you about 95% of the petrol consumption . Well done! If I had not spent so much on my new car( I bought it last mid December) and have spent a good deal on it since in upgrades ( and being relayed back from Devon last week after the front o/s suspension air bag died) ouch that was painful!
I own a 2002 L322 (the 3 litre TD6 BMW engine,) ie probably among the first L322s to roll off the production line. It’s a LHD (I bought it in Latvia in 2011 with 240,000 km on the clock.) I use it when I’m abroad which includes a twice yearly trip of 1800km between Latvia & Austria (it lives in Austria over the winter… I’m a ski freak.) I bought it for 13,000 euros (around £10k at the time) and since then I’ve spent around the same again on it. That includes new gearbox, turbo, fuel pump, front air suspension both sides, brake discs all round, injector, handbrake assembly & wiper motor, plus some minor bodywork and a new valance for the base of the drivers seat. In all, not that bad (12 years’ enjoyment of a RR Vogue for a total outlay of around £20-£22k, half of it staggered over the 12 years.) Needless to say some of my longer journeys have been interrupted with mechanical issues (I had to be recovered to Latvia from Lithuania when the gearbox went, and in Poland to the nearest Land Rover garage when the injector went, with an unscheduled 2 nights in a local hotel!) But as a “holiday car” it only does a maximum of 5000 miles a year, so having rectified the faults that are most likely just a legacy from its previous life, it has been almost trouble free for the last couple of years. It gets annually serviced at the Land Rover dealership in Riga, and ha complete anti rust treatment by “KROWN” before each winter. The last time I made the 1800km trip Latvia-Austria was in Dec 22 and it sailed through with no issues… except a cracked windscreen which can happen to anyone, and which was replaced on arrival. Last time I measured it, I averaged about 29.5 mpg (using the old fashioned method of filling up on departure, & checking the mileage each time I topped up.) Nearly all motorway at a fairly constant 120 km/h (75mph.) I love this car, and the key is not to skimp on maintenance, including preventative measures.) I change to winter tyres every November and I’m currently running on Continental T850P (some scary moments on “All Season” tyres prompted me not to skimp on those either) and now I find it’s unstoppable in all conditions, even in the Alps! (PS: there’s a video clip of it on my channel, parked in Latvia, ready for the 3 day trip.)
Do it all the time Joel,I have a place up in the north of Scotland 858 mile round trip. My l322’s eat the miles and return me around 32 miles to the gallon.
Thanks. Nice job. Great video. I drive also a 2006 RR TDV8. Brilliant car. In a recent trip from Holland to the Czech republic and back i noticed also that there is more fuel left than the meter says. With a remaining milage of just 9 km, at the fuelstation there was more than 10 liters left in the tank. Strange.
Hi Joel.. good video. Just completed 2200 miles road around Scotland and Outer Hebrides in my G wagon V6 diesel fully loaded with luggage. Ye it is beautiful and gets better the further north you go. I achieved 26mpg over all but head winds and stationary traffic kill my fuel consumption. Very nearly bought an L322 but opted G Wagen. Seeing this video I may buy a L322 aswell! I guess you were lucky with motorway tail backs and headwinds……??? Big fan of Harry Clarkson and High Peak videos.

I think it’s the ZF 8 that helps it a lot.
So an l405 being 400kg lighter and with a more modern ecu map should be able to do 45mpg ?
This car us getting so much appreciation now, the Interior is a major part in that.
On the fence over subscribing, and having watched a few of your video’s before, this one swung it. Well done.
I particularly liked your reflection on how lucky we are to be free to do these things, without question or hindrance, and explore such a beautiful UK 🇬🇧 - at that point you had me 😂
On the fence for a click , wow 🤣
I’ve had my 3.6 V8 for 4 months and had an intermittent suspension fault warning so far. Still love the Range Rover L322 for its imperious driving position and comfort and luxury.
Check your battery
Interesting thought
Great video and superb, flawless and natural presenting from someone of such a young age. I’ve literally never subscribed to anything on You Tube and this is the first channel for me. Keep em coming Joel. Literally better than Top Gear or The GT which for me are now all bout the presenters and the road tests are so false. Also watched one of your videos where you openly talk about depression. Well done to you for your honestly. Total respect. Keep up the good work
Well done when no other TH-camrs believed in you and laughed at you for doing it you still did it and it worked well
Another great video.
In all honesty they're not that bad. The 2010+ 4.4 TDV8 rarely has an issue.
That really was a very nice example of a Range Rover, you should never of got rid of that one Joel!!!
Now do it in a 2.2 diesel merc, legend has it you gain money while driving them as they generate diesel
See now, if I were to use my 4.2 Supercharged Rover for this challenge, I wouldn’t have made halfway into Scotland. As always, top work Joel!
I know the feeling my friend lol at least with mine on LPG I'd only run out at half the cost! ( and still have a full tank of petrol in reserve!
Hi M8. 2nd of June 2021, (my second day of ownership of my L322 3.6 TDV8 Vogue [lots factory fitted extras]) I drove Berwick upon Tweed to Liverpool Anfield and back in one day to attend a funeral.
Oh and BTW. That hotel, Barony Castle. I've stayed there, Jezza would have loved it! LOL
Very much doubt it, i fill up in there and they are truly miserable barstads 😂😂
I don't know, there is something about this video, so real life, well done Joel!
You guys, a specially English have an perfect taste in motoring video creating! High end product. Thank you!
Hi Joel. You have restored my "Faith" in considering ownership of such a vehicle. See you in the next one, 👍👍👍👍
Great personality on this guy. He seams to be a blend of Matt dose fitness and Jeromy Clarkson. Professional but still relatable
Hi Joel, Just found your channel. I would like to complement you on your enthusiasm, professionalism and knowledge on the delivery of your perfectly spoken English on your reviews.
other reviewers are just not able to deliver reviews with the use of the English language, as Brilliantly as you.
Thank you for your understanding and perfect reviews.
Appreciate the feedback, many thanks for watching sir.
You have a lot of humility, which is so appealing.
I recently did london to lands end and back in a 2023 Range Rover vogue D300 on one tank. Got 646 miles there and back. I was amazed.
Great vid- can you confirm the maths.what I heard was
700 miles
93 litres
Cost £400
Fuel 93 litres at £1.90 is £176.70
Mpg of 34.23 great going
I have a freelander 2 and get 45mpg on a long run.
I tried it and the garage staff told me off because you’re supposed to be ‘in control of the pump at all times’ 😬 good idea though!
Probably safe enough with a diesel pump...
MO-FAT 😂 it's Moffat as in moffit. Besides that butchering, fantastic video mate. great editing and the music was on point throughout
Well done Joe. Thanks for championing the Range Rover. I’ve bought my ticket so 🤞 with the raffle. Great effort. Got to be honest didn’t think you’d make it. 👏👍
Thats what a Range Rover IS . Unreal . Well done Car and Man .
The excitement i got when i saw the title of the video upload.
i love and enjoy these tests.
awesome video Joel.😊
What an incredible achievement Joel and a truly epic video. Been following you since the Z4 and this is certainly one of the best. Keep it up 👍
Just been watching this , and was more than a little amazed at the quality of this blog , packed with information, and tips , well done sir , and Clarkson should be looking behind himself at the skill set of yourself and others
Great watch mate. I love your passion and I felt like I was with you on the trip. Keep up with the travel videos. Take care 💪😘
Great video.
I echo your sentiments about taking joy in the freedom of travel & never taking for granted the rich fruits of UK scenery.
It dawned on me this morning myself while crawling along in heavy traffic around kings Lynn...
I did 800 miles on Thursday from Scotland to South Wales and back, I did fill up twice although I used less fuel in my CRV.
As they say in common parlance, and as you love (/loved) your RR so much, "Get a hotel room!"
Class looking motor! In the absence of a proper infrastructure to support evs, diesel is still king.
We should all take a minute to appreciate this green and pleasant land.
Very well put together video, well done!
Out of interest, did you work out pen and paper MPG vs. what the car told you?
He mention 33.5 mpg, which I take to be the RR display. My calculation on his 700 miles and 93.83 litres 33.9 mpg.
Most majestic car in the world ,way ahead of it's time when it was launched in 2002 .
Driven eco can get you 40mpg but aso 16 mpg if you nail it.
Nice to know TH-cam friends are soo supportive haha
16:00 in. Nothing but real talk! Well put Joel!
Had a L322 TDV8 a Long time ago. Was the most reliable Car I’ve ever had. Only one part broke in my ownership and that was a BMW part.
Well done! If I had not spent so much on my new car( I bought it last mid December) and have spent a good deal on it since in upgrades ( and being relayed back from Devon last week after the front o/s suspension air bag died) ouch that was painful!
hi Sam is lpg still 81 pence in east london
Videos have levelled up, good work Joel
Which is your channel ? To watch your video ??
@@Kassiusday Hi, it’s: Justin Neill 5003 👍
Do it all the time Joel,I have a place up in the north of Scotland 858 mile round trip. My l322’s eat the miles and return me around 32 miles to the gallon.
Thanks. Nice job. Great video. I drive also a 2006 RR TDV8. Brilliant car. In a recent trip from Holland to the Czech republic and back i noticed also that there is more fuel left than the meter says. With a remaining milage of just 9 km, at the fuelstation there was more than 10 liters left in the tank. Strange.
Ave just bought a 3.6tdv8 sport as a second car to my f type and am absolutely loving it
Been a while since I dropped by your channel. Great road trip, Well put together, great humanity in the mix too, don’t lose it.
Hi Joel..
My 4.4 tdv8 l322 gets 40mpg at 80mph on the cruise control. 38mpg at 70mph
Mine doesnt....
You should check the tyre pressures before setting out. The wrong pressures can significantly wreck your consumption figures.
