Do you mainly play these retro fighting games single player? I was just wondering since games like fatal fury 2 for the neo geo are literally almost unplayable in single player mode. The ai reads every one of your moves and has temporary invincibility frames where your attacks wont land. I just want a good single player fighting experience but I have yet to find one after relentlessly searching the neo geo fighting games library and much more.

Endless Duel was so good. It was easily one of the best looking games of that generation. My brothers and I spent countless hours playing it on emulation way back when. It was the reason we figured out how to configure a second controller to the emulator.
Years later after moving away from home, it was the first SFC cartridge I imported. Even though by that time, PS2 was king of the world, I still got my jollies in my Navy barracks room playing a Super Famicom fighter.

Fun fact, if you play the game and not lose a match, your last boss fight will be Epyon. I dont think i was ever able to beat Epyon. If I did, it was definitely down to the wire as I've spend a lot of time fighting him and got close so many times. Dont remember if you have to be in hard mode or not to get him to trigger. I wanna say Epyon is also a hidden character but only playable in versus mode.

It returned in the recent TMNT Cowabunga Collection. The original releases were hurt by the lack of an arcade release during a period when fighting games were defined by the arcade. It didn't really help that each console (SNES, Genesis, NES) received a completely different incarnation of the game.

Weaponlord is great, super deep, and received a lot of hype in videogame magazines before its release (and very little after its release), it was like designed by 90s fighting game nerds to make it as deep as possible. I was a kid in the 90s and was weirded out by how my Nintendo magazine had built up hype for this game for months, and nothing at all after its release.
Wiki has some examples on how revolutionary it was
""At its core, Weaponlord is a standard 2D fighting game experience. Where it differs is in its gameplay mechanics, and in some of its aesthetic choices and presentation. The game features thrust-blocking, an aggressive blocking system similar to Street Fighter III's Parry system. Also introduced in the game are Deflect moves, a counterattack maneuver that each character has. Certain special moves, known as "Take Downs", knock opponents onto their back. A player can then follow up with additional attacks while their foe is still on the floor.
In addition, when certain attacks are performed on an opponent in mid-swing, the player can cut off a piece of their clothing or their hair. Players can finish off matches using "Death Combos", Fatality-style combination attacks that can have a gory effect on opponents.
Weaponlord's fighters possess between 9 and 12 special moves each. Moves can be executed one of several ways: sweeping motions on the directional pad followed by an attack button, "charge" moves where a directional button is held for 2 seconds quickly followed by the opposite direction, and finally an attack button, or hold down moves where the player must first hold down an attack button, followed by a directional motion, and finish it by releasing said attack button.""

Weaponlord is so underrated. The parrying, weapon breaks/collisions, combos and staggering to extend the combis and into fatalities is awesome. On top of that the story mode changes depending on which characters you perform finishing moves on .

    • @Jackrost01
      @Jackrost01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@pheenmachine Big issue is balance and wacky input for specials and of course how you approch to mixups.
You can gain muscle memory for inputs, but game is prety fast to follow all list of inputs for your chacter. It's have logic, that input copy same direction as your character do this move, but you need very fast to move your fingers and parry at the same time. Limited animation also confuse.
For combo - this game have plenty infinites. Snes version have them big amount of it.
Mixups is strange. Almost no one have overhead. To break throught block you need to use armor breaker move.It weakenss block for next attacks. So defender need to use, but with this animations is really not easy

THIS. Is why Xmen: Children of the Atom is one of the greatest fighting games of all time. It too was released in 94/95 and it's so incredibly good, it not only blows all its feeble competition out of the water but it aged like fine wine to this day.
Far superior to all of it's muffled, clunky, so called "peer group". And I say that as a fighting game enthusiast.
People will make excuse after excuse but almost 30 years later...there is no excuse.
I give it it's flowers and take a bow to true vision and beauty.
Its literally decades ahead of it's time...

Weaponlord is so epic. If they had smoothed out the SNES gameplay a little more it would have been much more regarded. Maybe one day DJAMES will get the chance, IIRC he worked on the KI reboot .

I rented the Yu Yu Hakusho Final and the MMPR Fighting game a LOT back in the day (one of benefits of pirated cartridges being common in south america, we got a lot of japanese games like YYH and Ranma)

I remember ranma 1/2 hard battle cause it was advertised on a vhs of one of the episodes.
Endless duel Gundam wing yea I played that emulated and than playing power rangers fighter power rangers was poorly done and limited fighters but at least they included Ivan ooze would have been nice if they included the original megazord, dragonzord, dragonzord in fighting mode, red dragon in fighting mode to expand the roster or even tigerzord warrior mode

that Sailor moon fighting game was super hard with a cheap AI. I received it from some woman in Japan who was giving away all her childhood games.

What a pity we never got to play that Godzilla fight game or Variable Geo. Instead, we get a cut-rate Mortal Kombat, Weaponlord. 😞

Gundam wing endless duel and the mighty Morphin power rangers fighting edition on snes both used the same engine more or less which was a great move.

The real problem with 16-bit fighting games is that most people will play them via emulation. And at that point, it’s just as easy to emulate arcade games, which are a lot better during this era.

I've _never_ forgotten Endless Duel. That game fucking owns. My Tallgeese is sick as hell, and if I see you picking Epyon I'm kicking you out of my house.
_YYH: Tokubetsu-hen_ is another surprisingly awesome fighting game, but it's _seriously_ different compared to the traditional list on this video. I prefer it over every other YYH fighting game for how unique it is.

I played the ranma 1/2 ranma game a lot when I was in kindergarten and I went to an ex-friend's house, the same as the power ranger game with a neighbor when I was in kindergarten
