  • Ken Tanaka of Wish4Fish is back on the water. This time in Pulaski NY on the Salmon River for the Salmon and Steelhead run.
    Unfortunately I wasn't able to land any Steelhead but a couple were caught in our group. I was there with Douglas Outdoors for their annual Salmon Camp. I had an incredible time with a bunch of amazing people.
    I was lucky enough to have the NEW Ross Reels Animas with me and put it to the test with these beast Salmon. The reel handled them like a champ. The full review on the Ross Animas is coming soon!

    Nice Ken. I was there around the same time (Oct 9-10) just above where you guys were fishing (a few hundred yards upstream). Had a great trip and it is always a blast up there as I'm sure you know. Nice video!

    was up there 2 weeks ago all got their limits but it was major snag city

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah... unfortunately there is a LOT of that going on up there. Trying to educate people in Pulaski one person at a time. Which obviously takes a long time!

    • @Tendy3172
      @Tendy3172 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bass Finatics and you know what's funny about this, you were snagging as well if you were fishing there. You can say what you want but hooking them in the mouth is still a snag, you're just flossing the line through their mouth, everybody does it, you're doing nothing different to get a bite when the fish don't even have stomachs.

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hmmm, that’s funny. Especially when you watch them chase your fly and smash it.
      But you’re right. We are both wrong. You know all about how caught our fish.

    • @Tendy3172
      @Tendy3172 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wish4Fish just saying, I used to think they would bite to, but if you look at the science of the fish they are there to spawn and they don't have stomachs when the start to make their run up river. Yes it's true, once in a great while you might get a reaction strike from making them upset but it's all flossing really. I'm just trying to educate, not be mean

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joshua - Yeah, when they are way up stream that is true. Although when they are fresh out the lake they still have predatory instincts.
      They will also hit your fly because they are just plain pissed off.
      Let me “educate” you. I have watched a Salmon move several feet to hit the fly. You can also feel the difference when I fish takes your fly verses accidentally hooking it.

    Was this in the catch and release area?

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it was not.
      Most of the DSR policy is 100% catch and release for ALL trout species and Atlantic salmon. All species must be handled and released ethically; including while taking pictures.
      Guests may keep their daily limit of king or coho salmon; 3 fish per stringer combination of both species unless posted otherwise.

    What were your thoughts fighting salmon on an 8wt. 8wt seems like it better for steelhead and 9wt for salmon

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn’t feel any issues with the 8wt. Especially being under gunned.
      To each their own. I also have found my preferences change in time. For instance I used to throw streamers with a 6wt and now I prefer a 8wt. 😂🤷🏻‍♂️

    Nice fishing Ken. What size tippet are you using? I had a great time at Spruce creek.

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Todd! I was using 12lb and 10lb tippet. Usually with a 20lb butt section.
      4ft of 20lb to a swivel and then to a 4ft 12lb or 10lb tippet section.
      Glad to hear you had a good time on Spruce Creek! Fantastic stream!

    Man I'd love to get up there. What's the reason for using a single hand Spey line instead of just a sink tip or sinking line? Is it just for distance?

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. With the SHPL you can snap t and snake roll your line much further for covering more water on the swing.
      I am talking to them about hosting a trip up there so hopefully you can come join us.

    How much that cost at dsr I’m sure it’s not cheap guess u pay for first dibs on salmon

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It all depends on what time of year you go. This would of been $60 per day. Although I was with Salmon Camp. The DSR is the first 2 miles of the Salmon River so its first dibs indeed. Well worth the cost of not having to deal with so many people during the Salmon run upstream in the public section.
      Here is the price list

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Sky 6wt is fantastic. Most all my streamer video from May 2017 until Dec 2018 is with the Sky. Although now I am throwing the Thomas & Thomas Exocett 6wt.

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry. You're right. Fly fishing with eye protection is so stupid.

    • @austinthompson3489
      @austinthompson3489 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      so they weren't polarized? were all fish that were lifted from the water corner of the mouth?

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh... my bad. I thought you were just being a smart ass. Hence my smart ass remark.
      You can see the fish every now and then. Especially on brighter days.
      Yes polarized. Only wear polarized on the water. All fish caught were hooked in the mouth. If it wasn't we snapped them off. It's illegal to land fish hooked anywhere else. Unfortunately not every abides to those laws.

    • @austinthompson3489
      @austinthompson3489 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just hold the fish up for crying out loud!! This posing/angling the fish towards the camera to make it look bigger is such BS... Even little kids are doing it with 3" sunfish!! Next you will stealing "encounter" from the hunting shows... "We had some wonderful encounters with salmon and steelhead. Encountering these encounters with other anglers seeking to encounter their own encounters while encountering our own encounters while fishing hard lead to encountering many lasting friendships made during such fishing encounters.".
