      Greg is awesome! His ability to see and track the fish is astounding. The conversation throughout the day is entertaining as well. Fished with him 20 something years ago before I moved out west. Matt's family has been fishing with him ever since. It was good to get back and fish with Greg again.

    Looked like a fun time on the DSR. One thing to be cautious about, Joe, when you got a salmon on try not to grab your rod above the cork handle. Every time you grab high on the stick like that you put a lot of strain on the rod and could snap it with these beasts (I speak from experience unfortunately).

      Thanks for the tip. Yeah, I should not be grabbing the rod above the handle like that. I will be more careful in the future.

       @jbGAMEandFISH Totally understand and appreciate the tip, snapping a rod, particularly a borrowed one, would suck. What fly fishing I do is for trout, not used to fish as large as the kings on a fly rod. On my first one in this video you can hear me asking the guide, "am I supposed to be trying to reel it in or let it run?". He said, "you'll know when it's time to bring it in". I was a bit rusty, it had been 20+ years since I was up there salmon fishing and even then I think it was only once or twice before. I'm anxious to get back and fish some more.

    Joe hi. Can you tell me what setup you used for fishing? What fly rod, reel and fly line? Thank you buddy. Great video, i gonna buy gopro soon)

      I used a borrowed set up as I only have a 4wt rod that I use for trout fishing. For this trip, I was using an Orvis Recon 9wt rod with an Orvis Hydros 9wt reel with 9wt line. Not sure what line was loaded on it. The guide ties his own leaders, not sure what pound test it was considered.

    Nice video! Question; heading up in a week with no rain in the forecast. If water levels get too low could they possibly release from the damn to increase?

      This was my first time back up there in 20+ years. I'm not overly familiar with how they manage the river flow via the dam in the Fall. I did some poking around and came up with this site for the dam release schedule. Only seems to go through today, but maybe keep an eye on it and see if it changes or is updated over the next few days.
      www.safewaters.com/facility/lighthouse-hill
      May also try reaching out to the Douglaston Salmon Run folks. Might get hold of someone who is familiar with the when/why they release from the dam historically.
      Website - douglastonsalmonrun.com/
      Contact # from that site - 315-298-6672
      Could also try the sport shops in the area, they may be able to let you know how the release schedule has gone historically.

      Whitaker's - 315-298-6162
      Good luck and I hope you slay them! It was a hell of a lot of fun, I cannot wait to go back.

      A spinning rod is actually better for this kind of fishing than a fly rod, you can do the same but with much more feeling and control + obv heavy splitshots are not even related to flyfishing in any way shape or form. It's like the guys 'flyfishing' for halibut with a 10oz jig claiming they caught hallies on the fly. Yes it's a flyfishing rod but no fly. this is spinnfishing equipment used on a fly rod so basicly the same thing.@@art08474

    The quality is incredible, what did you film this on?!

    • @joesrandomadventures3474
      @joesrandomadventures3474  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This was filmed with a GoPro Hero 11. I use the full frame 8:7 Wide sensor mode at 4k/60fps with no in camera stabilization. Shutter Rate is auto, White Balance is Auto, Sharpness was High, 10-bit color On, ISO Min 100 Max 400, and Color Natural. I started learning Davinci Resolve this Spring and use Gyroflow and it's plug in for Resolve to do the stabilization in post. I like the 8:7 format because it captures a wider field of view vertically and when cutting down to 16:9 Gyroflow follows wherever the action was in the frame.
      The shots of Matt fishing are a little grainier sometimes because I zoomed in on him in post editing. I really wish 5k/60fps was available with the full sensor 8:7 mode, alas not yet. Maybe next year on the Hero 13. My new Hero 12 did arrive right after I got back from the trip. I'm going to try 16:9 5k/60fps to see how that works. Probably try Log color as well and try my hand at color correcting. I'm still learning about all of this.
      Will get out trout fishing in the next week or so to test it. I like to stay at or above 60fps so I can do slow motion of the fish jumping and the higher the resolution the better for stabilization and zooming in while maintaining clarity when editing it down to 4k.

    What pound line and leader??

    • @joesrandomadventures3474
      @joesrandomadventures3474  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was 9wt line, not sure on the leader. The guide ties up his own leaders for us to use. Want to say it was around 12 or 15lb.
