hey i have a question, when you caught that big boy in the beginning of your video, how did you get him to the bank, it looks like you just walked towards him slowly pushing him to the bank, is that how its done or do you have to fight them like any other fishing scenario?
Heres the deal it was a lot of luck.... 1- the water levels were extremely low for weeks so the salmon had to work harder to get through. 2- that day was avout 85 degrees and few days before that were about the same. By the time that fish got to me it was already tired so didnt have much of a fight........ now if it was 60degrees and water flow was average..... it would've been like hooking into a freight train
You’re a sad human being bro this is ridiculous that you’re making a tutorial on how to floss fish come fish salmon the right way and get them to eat you’re a fake
Anyone planning to fish the Salmon River will definitely be "in the know", and that fishing action you showed really indicates what an awesome trip it will be.
Dude! By far the best, logical, and straight forward video I have watched in preparation for my trip to Pulaski in a couple weeks! You covered all the basics from setup to regulations. I hope you have several more videos because I about to watch them all! This will be my first trip to Pulaski however I have "Combat" fished in Alaska- FishOn!
Good info for those beginners that venture up for the 1st time. Especially being told from someone who is basically a beginner yourself. It helps people gain confidence that it's possible. Fyi, fly fishermen would agree that, with good polarized glasses you can see the salmon go for their flies and egg patterns. Fish need to eat no matter what their goals! Fish-On!
Good video brother. I have been fishing up there for 6 years now, and have watched a lot of different techniques from guys on the water. 1st year up was had no idea what we were doing. Spent rough $60 in bait that we were told was hot. After the first 3 hour of work and 1 salmon between 3 guys. I started watching some of the more experienced guys catching fish. A couple were nice enough to explain to us the flossing technique. Never looked back. And I do believe there is a right and wrong way to use it, and you showed it perfectly. See you in a couple of weeks.
Same exact experience for me, and that was my intention for this video. I just want to help beginners understand the technique. I also understand that its controversial but if you do it right and not set the hook until you actually floss the fish.... the chances of snagging it anywhere on the body become quite small. But i still have so much hate on this video haha 🤷♂️
I'll be going this weekend for the first time salmon fishing! This was extremely helpful it makes it easier to understand and being less worry about what to do!! Thank i really appreciate it!
Thanks man, here its really specific on how to fish for them and its dancing the razors edge in terms of snagging. So i wanted to make the rules crystal clear.
My man you did a great job explaining and teaching me how to salmon fish the Salmon River I'm going up there first time and you did a great job I want to thank your brother great video
When you tie your main line to the barrel swivel, leave a tag line of about 3 inches long and when or if you get a snag the weights will slid off that tag line instead of breaking off your whole set up. Its easier to replace you split shot than your entire leader and swivel.
Great upload. What is with the thumbs down? Is it about the hook regulation? Because that also depends on where you live. The viewer should also read the regulations on top of watching this great upload. People fail to realize how much editing goes into these videos. Spectacular camera angles, footage, tips, and introductions of high quality are littered through out this one video. Before giving a thumbs down just simply go to the next video. Instead of discrediting the care, dedication, and hard work that this man put in for US the viewer. Thanks for the upload Jag! Much love!
Little late on commenting, but you are right, the flossing technique is a very good way to catch/land salmon on the salmon river. A lot of people hate flossers, but truly its the way to do it on the salmon river on a lot of parts, like true north angler said in his comment, salmon hit out of aggression, they don't eat in the river they hit out of aggression. Great video, and good luck this salmon season, hoping to see a video on the salmon river this year. Like a lot of other species of fish during their spawn, they hit out of aggression, not to eat.
Haters will hate. I bet some of the comments calling you out HAVE caught them the same way. You are catching them by the mouth, don’t care how you are catching them by the mouth and you have evidence of catching them by the mouth. Great explanation, we don’t have that style of salmon here but then again in Colorado they allow snagging of kokes here. Different states different rules you explained.
Hey man not everyone agrees and it is controversial. Ive spent an entire seaaon 2 yrs ago trying to catch em to "bite" with out a single hit. I try to do it the right way i dont slam a treble hook through the water

I fish the Salmon river every year. Best time to fish the run is about the Sept 25 to Oct 12. I have friends that contact me when fish are running. Cohoes normally fun first then the Kings. This yr the water level is low running about 180 GPM. Last yr was a little tough the run was short. I hooked up about 40 to 50 fish in my 11 day trip. Here is an important thing to know..Do not put a large bait on the hook. If you are using sponge just a tiny piece. Remember if the bait is to big and the barb is covered you will have a hard time hooking up. Your rod must have some back bone..I have seen many rods break when a good fish is hooked. Just a few tips for the run. Oh yeah if you hook up let everyone know you have a fish on..By yelling " Fishon" this way the other ppl will reel their line in. Hope this helps and see you on the river.
Depends bro I've experienced the kings run first and then tho Coho's followed by the steels to eat the eggs and hold over, with the browns spawning and gorging but the 25th the oct 12th is prime bro the staircase and the north south trestle are the shit. Gonna be up there Oct 15th hope more steels will be in at a later date in my hopes lol
Going up for my first time this week. Bringing my offshore 7’6” medium heavy and a really nice 4000 series reel. It’s got like 20 lbs braid on it and I was going to use 12 lbs flouro leader. Will that be enough? Also any specific etiquette on harvesting and holding onto fish? I need more tips!! Hah
I agree with some of the comments recommending to use a bobber and bait instead of flossing. Easier said than done when just starting out as a BEGINNER. This is my 3rd year salmon fishing and I am just getting around to using eggs as there is quite a learning curve to begin. I started out flossing to get aquatinted and got more tips and lessons from other anglers along the way. I love quite a ways from the salmon run so I couldn’t just start out cured skein, maybe a gas station cup of pre tied eggs

Hasnt really been many changes that afeect the average fisherman but i am planning to put out a video in the next week or two about how and where to target the fish in the river
Hi Jag. For us here in Ontario, flossing is considered snagging. Lol. I generally don’t target salmon while they are in the rivers especially in low clear water where you can see them. I enjoy fishing for them at the river mouths where they hit all kinds of lures. I do agree with you, the salmon usually hit out of aggression especially in rivers where they protect their spawning area. Great tips and tricks Jag. Thanks for explaining the regs as well. 👍
Yea and us guys in NY that can only go to the river get a lot of heat for using this technique 🤷♂️. I do want to save up some cash and get out on a charter and get them on the bite! Thanks for stopping by my brother. Hope all is good with you and the family 👪
Jag Fishing You don’t even need a boat, Jag. Get yourself a medium action rod, about 10 ft in length, spoil up 20 lb braid on a bigger sized reel and go fish the piers and river mouths around where the salmon enter the rivers. I do very well at night fishing glow in the dark spoons as well as crankbaits during the day when they start staging in numbers. It is so much fun when they peel out your line and fight in open water. Try it, you won’t regret it. I also have friends who fish with me from their kayaks close to shore casting for them. I have a few videos from last year salmon fishing the piers and from my pontoon boat and what I use. Hope you try it, it is fun.
Flossing is highly frowned upon here in Oregon too, unless you’re dancing. Not considered snagging and it is legal, but you will get an ear full. We tend to stick to eggs, beads, or spinners in the rivers. Good info though bro 👍
Heavy sport fishing pressure makes Salmon learn quick what is real and what's fake. So flys, spoons, spinners and other hardware are ignored and easily avoided by the fish. You sling out a single translucent fish egg with long leader and apply an aggressive retrieval at the end of your drift and repeat a thousand times.... viola fish on! Not very sportsman like.
Hi Jag , thank you for this amazing video full of information, im planing to go the first week of November to the Salmon River ( Pulaski) and i wish i can see you around, great job 👍
@@mendoza6335 ive never fished for steelies in the river. I want to try this year. I have a buddy thats a guide there and im probably going to utilize him
Jag very informative, differently helps this newbie...next video give us other areas to fish...personally looking for areas with not so much pressure, both wife and I are newbies
Thanks i appreciate it. There is no information about spots besides keeping up with the reports. Wherever the fish are the people will be too. My only suggestion is the higher up river you go earlier in the season the less people will be there. However, there wont be many fish up further either. Unfortunately to avoid people is pure luck
I use the kastking sharky 3000 on mine and it works great. Reel is a work horse and with that set up i go for catfish as well and its been 3 years on the same reel. Definitely my recommendation
@@jagfishing836 Going to Pulaski in Sept for the first time. I see it is a walk along the river from where you park. How do you carry out the fish you catch. Do you use a cooler with wheels?
@@johnm674 different ppl have different methods. Usually a heavy duty stringer does that job. I just drag them with me and when i get to the truck i throw em in the cooler
No, there cannot be anything weight down the hook. Shortest leader you can have is 2 feet and split shots gotta be right above it..... i think theres an exception when your bobber fishing but i couldnt tell you off the top of my head
In case anyone doesn't know. I'd say only about 10% of the kings you will see during the run will even react to a lure or a fly. And only about half of that 10% will take a quick nip at it. Its snagging with extra steps...but it does take some skill soooooo.
You can go crazy on salmon equipment but you will do just fine with a medium/heavy rod at least a 6'6" i would recommend. I like tonuse my ugly stick gx2 setup because its affordable, get the job done and if you get a huge fresh fish and it breaks the rod youre not 200 bucks down the drain lol. I would use around 12-15 pound main line and 8-10 pound leader. And as for hooks i like tonuse #2 octopus hook.... just make sure youre within the legal tackle which i mentioned in the video. Also a great spot to get hooked up with the right gear is a store called fat nancys right in pulaski

@@truenorthangler hi true north angler im from fiushbrain
Heavy sport fishing pressure makes Salmon learn quick what is real and what's fake. So flys, spoons, spinners and other hardware are ignored and easily avoided by the fish. You sling out a single translucent fish egg with long leader and apply an aggressive retrieval at the end of your drift and repeat a thousand times.... viola fish on! Not very sportsman like.
Y'all want a tip stop paying for the dsr
Hi Jag , thank you for this amazing video full of information, im planing to go the first week of November to the Salmon River ( Pulaski) and i wish i can see you around, great job 👍
Good luck! Are you going for steelhead or gonna try to get the last of the kings?
Steelhead brother...
@@mendoza6335 ive never fished for steelies in the river. I want to try this year. I have a buddy thats a guide there and im probably going to utilize him
Waaaoooo incredible nice fishing day
Genius! trying that this weekend
Good luck!
Lot’s of great info brother, I wished we had them here I bet they are fun to catch! Thanks for sharing brother!
I cant even begin to explain the fight
Great tips Thanks
Hope it helped!
Great advice and info my dude further boosting my knowledge for when I finally get to America and yes I want to fish with you my man.
My door is always open brother
grate advice with out a lot of bull , good job
Thank you
What if I use 5 ft leader and split shot just between 4ft. from the hook??
Im not sure thats really pkaying on the edge..... i personally wouldnt do it but id contact DEC to get the legal perspective to be sure
Thanks good info👍
What’s the best time to go?
Now til late October
Jag very informative, differently helps this newbie...next video give us other areas to fish...personally looking for areas with not so much pressure, both wife and I are newbies
Thanks i appreciate it. There is no information about spots besides keeping up with the reports. Wherever the fish are the people will be too. My only suggestion is the higher up river you go earlier in the season the less people will be there. However, there wont be many fish up further either. Unfortunately to avoid people is pure luck
Loved the video!
Thank you
Hi. What kind of sunglasses do you recommend?
Amber or yellow seems to work best for me!
Heard dudes been catching them already this year I'm gonna head up tonight for my first time!
Hell yea man best of luck to you! Let me know how u do
Will do, thank you! I've been steelhead fishing multiple times in erie but my grandfather always went to Pulaski so I'm really itching to go!
Its a good time, went 2 days ago there was a load of cohos that came in mid-day
Love your videos best info 👌 so far I found on TH-cam I am a beginner and still waiting to catch my first salmon and trout
Thank you i appreciate it and glad the video was helpful! Good luck!!
Great information brother looks like you covered it all .
Thank you sir, i appreciate it
I had a 6'5" ugly stick given to me what reel would you recommend to put on it for salmon, fishing rivers in Michigan
I use the kastking sharky 3000 on mine and it works great. Reel is a work horse and with that set up i go for catfish as well and its been 3 years on the same reel. Definitely my recommendation
Great video. Thanks
Thanks for watching
@@jagfishing836 Going to Pulaski in Sept for the first time. I see it is a walk along the river from where you park. How do you carry out the fish you catch. Do you use a cooler with wheels?
@@johnm674 different ppl have different methods. Usually a heavy duty stringer does that job. I just drag them with me and when i get to the truck i throw em in the cooler
Hell ya I wanna go
Come up bro haha September/october , finally got a vid thats overr 100 views 🤣🤣🤣
Right!!
can you use any split shot near or on the hook?
No, there cannot be anything weight down the hook. Shortest leader you can have is 2 feet and split shots gotta be right above it..... i think theres an exception when your bobber fishing but i couldnt tell you off the top of my head
Good stuff man. Really helpful 👌
Glad it helped
New reg.. no barbed hooks?
I have not heard that one or has anyone i speak to that fishes there heard that. Id imagine something like that wld be a huge announcement in the regs
6-8 lb. Test for steelies and browns 10-12 lb. For kings and them kings by the estuary on the bridge be smacking flies and lures. Good video bro
I plan to fish the Salmon River. Tight Lines from Michigan
No hate your absolutely correct. Finally someone actually telling the truth
So legit🔥🔥🔥Awesome info bro! Can’t wait to come do this with ya sometime 🤙🏼
Yo thanks for the love brother
Where should i start on the salmon river
At this point wherever you want they're all over. Early season is more of a guessing game and aiming for the lower parts.
Haha worth a shot any ways...
@@jagfishing836 thanks man I tried oswego last year got skunked it's a long drive back to nh im hoping for a tight line in pulaski this year
Are you familiar with the river at all?
@@jagfishing836 other then Google map not really im planning on being there Nov 16ish
thanks dude so have 3 feet of line between hook and 1/2 oz weight and just cast it infront
Thats the idea
Going in a week thank you!!
Good luck! Hopefully the water rises its terribly low
what size hook?
The gap cannot exceed 1/2" so any size you see fit that works. Lots of guys use mosquito hooks
@@jagfishing836 Thanks man! I'm heading there 10/7 and I'm looking forward to it!
Good luck!
weird question. What sponges do you use for bait though ahah
In case anyone doesn't know. I'd say only about 10% of the kings you will see during the run will even react to a lure or a fly. And only about half of that 10% will take a quick nip at it. Its snagging with extra steps...but it does take some skill soooooo.
Where can I buy license for fishing in Pulaski river
Fat nancys is right off the exit ramp but theres a ton of places
I heard that nikko super scent balls are a hot bait for the salmon river.
would like to go there this yera, what kinda of rod, reel, line, and hook are you using?.
What brand of hook are you using?
I use eagle claw lazer sharp octopus hook
You right on the money .hell yeah see you there on December 7
@jagfishing836
Going for the first time next week. Will all this still apply later in the season or should we be shooting for steelhead?
I plan to go just to watch. I'm 70+ with bad legs . I know It will be one of my best trips. Maybe I can find a way to fish in the future. thank you
When are you going Bob?
