Elemental surge slash is top tier in multiplayer, which I strongly believe its true main purpose. Solo hunts go with traditional tcs strongarm but in multiplayer specially afflicted hunts go with elemental surge slash because its guarateed you gonna miss most of your strongarm tcs. Blue scroll = surge slash combo then red scroll = tcs just for sleep nuking monsters head if you had the chance ofc, alot of adhd players out there wont give a shit and just wakeup monsters with tickle hits. My favorite elemental surge slash gs is the silver rath because its easier to build with and you can squeeze alot of damage in that shit ab 7 resentment 5 agit 5 fire attack 5 crit b 3 wex 3 dereliction 3 blood rite 2 recovery up 2 defiance 2 ( really good at level 3) level 2 not so much and you can use flinch free instead chain crit 1 part breaker 1 crit ele 1 element exploit 1 final boss head, arms and boots silver rath chest malzeno coil You can actually fill in the four slot head piece of crisis +4 instead of recovery up 2 then remove 1 level of challenger and slot in level 1 crisis for 20 more damage I do have a good charm but you can remove challenger as necessary because per level and uptime it is the worst even compared to resuscitate which is a 3 level skill compared to 5 of challenger so it is the least priority. Armor augments aint really a problem because getting resentment is not that rare even wex and crit boost because rerolling all depends on your patience (post update i have no idea how rerolling works now). Any monsters that are weak to fire you can literally melt lmao
My favorite types of weapon i used in ice born were great sword, long sword, bow and hammer, and it’s super good that great sword is a good weapon here
Surge Slash Combo has a lower DPS than just charging up TCSs, but it's a lot easier to use. You don't need to time any counters or position yourself so the monster will be in striking range 5 seconds from now. It's a much simpler weapon like S&S, where you run up to the monster, dodge its attacks, and hit vulnerable parts during the openings.
Surge Slash is useful for putting out damage on monsters you don't know very well and can't read as much. Or monsters that fly across the fucking area for a buttslam and have shit hitzones unless enraged or toppled.
I really like the GS and appreciate it, but I miss my attacks so often. My depth perception is terrible in this game. Hunts with the GS take me around 15 minutes, but with nearly anything else, Im barely hitting 10. Granted this is a me problem and Im just getting used to GS in low rank, but I dunno, Id rather use something else I actually hit with
Idk why but i feel like once they added the new moves to the greatsword starting from World all the moves aside from chsrge slash became so weak and unnecessary anymore. I feel sad for it.
ight , so. the thing with backslide is that it has a lot more i-frames than power sheathe so it is better for not so experienced players so you can "study" the monsters moves more easily , figure out where to position , etc (at least that's how I used it). and I really recommend giving guard tackle a second chance , if you don't care about the meta and "MUH DPS" , it can be very fun and comfy if you pair it with the rampage deco that refunds some sharpness when guarding , and even the one that doesn't use sharpness when guarding if you don't have a 3 slot deco is still solid , especially when using a GS that has low sharpness. Also being able to have 2 ways to skipping strong charged slash (guard tackle and strongarm) can be really good in certain situations. Source: I have over 1500 GS hunts in Rise between switch and pc
Strongarm is indeed strong but super hard to use because the monsters move a lot and by the time you trigger the counter, the monster is either too far away or preparing a followup, both rendering Strongarm kinda useless. The game doesn't cooperate a lot with Strongarm.
the backslide is absolutely insane imo. Sometimes, you can't use strongarm because of positioning or multi hits, whereas you can side step while skipping a charge level and punish the monster that way.
If you face a monster that does alot of multihits just take Rageslash... deals a bit less damage but gains more power when getting attacked while using it.
Nobody is talking about Rage Slash. They nerfed it pretty hard, but you can still consistently dish out 1k dmg. If you have bloodrite and part breaker, you never have to stop attacking. I can sub10 A3 monsters. Trying to see if I can sub10 furious rajang
I’m with you 100% - unless you’re a speed runner, the ACS/Rage style of play seems to be so much more consistent (vs gambling on landing TCS) Your build sounds really interesting! What armors are you using to get the best out of partbreaker/blood rite? Quiros crafting has probably made your build even stronger right… Would be keen to see what you’re running and how the skills look? Cheers mate
yeah, rage slash pretty nuts. i main rage slash simply because uninterrupted charge attack and i can attack in any direction i want, which resulting more hits. for me, more hits = more dps.
I love playing GS in Sunbreak with hunting edge skill. Sometime I have more airtime than any insect glaive user 😁 In Rise I was Longsword-Main, now in Sunbreak, they made GS almost as agile as Longs word but with way more damage output.... I love it.
Gaurd Tackle might be useful if you use the rampage decoration the sharpend the weapon when you block. I am not a greatsword user, so I don't know how good it is.
at that point I'd rather use protective polish, the anti species deco is just too good for GS. Boosting your damage by 5% on a weapon that deals SO MUCH DAMAGE is too strong to give up in my opinion
@@awesomesauce5974 you're right, I've actually stopped using strong arm because of how boring the playstyle is. Now I use Hunting Edge and Surge Slash and my build is amazing!! Big damage, big mobility, and with Afflicted, I'm unkillable.

As a greatsword main something to take note of at 7:30 mark is when you put your barrel bomb down for your strongarm combo try to be weary of your teammates location or else you will blow them away like he does in that clip! I usually try to hit a tail or put my bomb far back enough that I don’t blow away my teammates, we don’t want to be the new long sword or cluster bomb guys😂
Oh yeah definitely, it's just our group of mates so we often *TRY* to hit as many as possible 😂 but I am wary of others locations when playing with random people
I really have been enjoying GS with the hunting edge and surge slash combo. The combo just feels so fun for me because of how I can react to something such as the monster sidestepping by performing a upward slash mid combo to move forward, or get in some extra blunt with the second circular swing. I have tried out strongarm stance, and I don't jive with it. I'd rather drag my large slab of metal into the air and plunge myself down on the monster with a charged attack that can be chained into a circle swing
Yeah Strongarm doesnt work that well with Surge Slash. I use Adamant Charge for mobility and super armor and it works super well with status trigger. Head waist Goldian and the rest Risen Chameleos makes for a super powerful poison build hitting 3k on the training dummy with a TCS. Its nowhere close to the 5k+ with Strongarm but its super solid and you shouldn't feel like you're lacking in the damage department.
I've tried putting points in offensive guard. It appears countering with strongarm doesnt proc offensive guard. The attack buff is not there when it counter an attack resulting no additional damage added to the attack post counter. The buff proc when you do a near attack block using ZR. CMIIW.
Main reason some GS mains like myself don’t do the skill swap is for repositioning. Even in solo hunts, we understand that we can get a big chunk of damage, but in a real fight it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that more than half the monsters in the game have a knock back that can throw a hunter off, to exploit the system it requires timing, and it’s simply easier to reposition instead of waiting for the perfect time for the monster to get a hit off. This is what causes less times in speed runs mind you, unless someone specifically has their auto craft set to mini BB’s it’s not beneficial. Also shoulder charges provide Iframes; while skill switching to animation cancel into a normal GS charge does not. To do both maneuvers require specific conditions for the latter to be the better option, but more times than not a reposition is favored over the skill switch. This would especially be the case in solo hunts as GS excels in run and gun play styles until a knockdown which then makes the skill switch animation cancels viable for the hunt. Hope this makes sense to anyone who also questioned why most GS mains don’t just animation cancel with skill switch.
Good input. Of course it's not something you can do all the time, the only way to consistently pull it off is if you have practiced a run, which I'm sure most people don't . But the reason I bring this up is that I play with many GS mains and none of them knew about this so I wanted to put it out there, for those that weren't aware. Simply that.
@@darkhero2 interesting thanks for putting it out there for other GS mains. Also for a tip on the surge combo your having trouble with, it’s also important to mention that the surge combo is better utilized off a knockdown as you get higher damage in total from it when compared to the normal charges; not that it’s impossible to learn how to use it all throughout a hunt, but for testing purposes you get more bang from your buck off of knockdowns. Good luck and hope you enjoy your hunts more.
@@svgmike6619 Right, that would make sense, trying to use it regularly like I'd use charged slash hasn't felt right. This will fix it. Thank you. Good luck and happy hunting to you too!
Ya the one time I've done the animation cancel is vs monsters that enrage after I land a tcs but I have time for a tcs but not a normal one. Usually it's to fast so the normal sa cs is used. But it is nice when it's possible.
I haven't bought the game, but am planning to if the longsword is good enough as it was in iceborne, can someone tell whether it is that good or not(only solo player)!
Surge Slash is much easier than whatever gs has become if you haven't mastered either. The average player whiffs most true charged slashes. Easily the most difficult weapon to enjoy.
A small correction on the surge slash combo: the horizontal sweeps (A on Switch, unsure which button it is on PS4 controller layouts) have armor at all 3 levels. I like using them to power through monster roars. The second hit of the second sweep attack even does impact damage!
But thats on sunbreak not on rise , I have to use guard tackle twice to activate the true charge slash and I keep Missing the second hit , but I prefer rage slash because it’s easier to hit and faster, I play mhr on PlayStation
Solo? Hell yeah, monster's attention is solely on you so easier counters and you can use bombs freely. In Multiplayer? Fuck no. Monster will be ping ponging in between players even with the increased attention deco, you better not use bombs either or you're fucking over your teammates.
I want to use greatsword it's my main but I also like the boom boom of gunlance. GS+ Boom boom GL =GreatCannonSword. 😂 I want this weapon together so badly like a giant gunblade of squall. 😂
My issue with the GS in Sunbreak is that the counter into true charged slash makes the weapon incredibly boring, the counter is not as flashy and stylish as the counters in LS, sure it makes for fun moments when and if you land the true slash cause with how much monsters move in G Rank is nearly impossible to hit them unless they stay still for long periods of time, which most don't, or when they get downed or sleeping. And trying anything else, you lose out on damage unless you play elemental GS. What I want back is the bonk GS playstyle from Iceborne, k.o. ing monsters with GS is always fun but due to the k.o. skills being nerfed in Rise its nearly impossible to pull off.
It depends on peoples personal preference and the monster you fight. I went through all of sunbreak without using strong arm not because i hated how it worked, its because i didnt know how it worked. But once i figured it out, it clicked like butter with me. Personally with me, i use it as a free way to get a tcs off through small barrel bombs. Most monsters i dont use it on sense i know i gotta wait for them to slow down example being seregios and Zinogre. Anywho, i dont see Strongarm as a problem skill, its a simple case of if you dont like using it just use hunting edge or adamant charged slash. No one forces you to use that skill except yourself. But back to talking about SAS, i personally love it and its insanely fun. Mainly because monsters can counter my counter attempt, like gaismagorm and Scorned Magnamalo, as well as all of the afflicted monsters. They are built to counter specific moves especially both adamant charged slash and Strongarm stance.
You saying like there's no oter ways to play gs, new combo is incredible, rage slash...Yes i hate it as it makes gs a no brainer, but it actually makes you hunts easier, new counter can be used not only as damage dealer but also as a panic move if you dont have time to dive. But i appreciate you iceborne love, best part for me, as your gs strikes feel so impactful, when in rise you have those damage sponges who dont care about your attacks. Yes rise gs is fun to play, but iceborne one is more satisfying, as it still wants you to learn a monster, but gives you pure happiness when you land a hit, monster falls, his head breaks etc. Rise: okay you did 6k damage, ok, do it another tree times and i will flinch
wait you dont explain them what guard tackle do? just say you dont like it at all? because if i re call guard tackle lets you skip to true charge slash or rage slash if the monster hits you during that animation
strongarm stance nerds be like "i can counter" with hunting edge I can get a free big damage number after completing a combo and go straight back into a new combo faster than rolling and going back in *I can also hit things in the air*
Don't hate me everyone, but I honestly don't like Strongarm Stance. Not as in I'm bad at using it, I'm talking conceptually. It and the new Swaxe counter just feel like such uninspired additions to the weapons that don't mesh well with their weapon identities, and are also broken as frick. Like, really? After base Rise, did Swaxe and GS really need counters? Especially ones that are so braindead and easy to use and still do frankly stupid amounts of damage? These weapons hardly look like themselves anymore in Sunbreak. Do you remember pre-Rise, when all of the short video clips of weapons doing cool stuff that people posted, actually looked like they took insane amounts of planning, skill, timing, and more than anything positioning? For GS and Swaxe in particular, it feels like nowadays 90% of those clips are just counters now. Flinching a Scorned Magnamalo or any other monster out of its ultimate attack isn't impressive when your counter has about a gajillion active frames and high damage and flinch values. What's ACTUALLY impressive is something like landing a perfect TCS in World/Iceborne to flinch the monster moments before it hits your hunter, because you didn't have some counter to take care of the timing and positioning for you. I hope that they stay FAR away from this counter and I-frame crap in Wilds and really go back and focus on the positioning-oriented gameplay that Monster Hunter has always had.
Yeah not a skill for me but hate counters to much timing for me 😂 did try it but absolutely hate it 😂 and ot does shit damage if u dont use charges first so nah 😂 the other once are way better less damage but way better where u cant flinch while charging less damage but way better to be fair for me

SSC seems like Elemental/Status - it actually makes sense to have 100+ element in your weapons now vs the RAW Vanilla ~25 Element.
i gave strongarm stance a try, but i still prefer the rage slash playstyle, i think armored moves are more fitting than counters on a weapon like the greatsword.
Say you suck at positioning without saying you suck at positioning.
@@Ten_Thousand_Locusts never said i wasn't successful with strongarm stance, i just said that i find rage slash conceptually more fitting on GS lol
@@TheLova98 sure thing guy, just admit you suck lol.
Sunbreak killed my experience with the greatsword by butchering the Critical Draw skill. A playstyle that has been around for a long time and they decide to change a skill that is essential for it to work...and for what?
I like the greatsword but i don't use it much in Sunbreak due to this. Its a real shame because i like the hit and run style the greatsword can offer.
My favorite elemental surge slash gs is the silver rath because its easier to build with and you can squeeze alot of damage in that shit
ab 7
resentment 5
agit 5
fire attack 5
crit b 3
wex 3
dereliction 3
blood rite 2
recovery up 2
defiance 2 ( really good at level 3) level 2 not so much and you can use flinch free instead
chain crit 1
part breaker 1
crit ele 1
element exploit 1
final boss head, arms and boots
silver rath chest
malzeno coil
You can actually fill in the four slot head piece of crisis +4 instead of recovery up 2 then remove 1 level of challenger and slot in level 1 crisis for 20 more damage
I do have a good charm but you can remove challenger as necessary because per level and uptime it is the worst even compared to resuscitate which is a 3 level skill compared to 5 of challenger so it is the least priority. Armor augments aint really a problem because getting resentment is not that rare even wex and crit boost because rerolling all depends on your patience (post update i have no idea how rerolling works now). Any monsters that are weak to fire you can literally melt lmao
My favorite types of weapon i used in ice born were great sword, long sword, bow and hammer, and it’s super good that great sword is a good weapon here
Me with 250 hours using GS since base rise: “Hmm yes interesting”
Man seeing the Tetsu greatsword in the thumbnail really makes me nostalgic. I want my boy back in the game
Great sword has been dumb busted fun since world when the shoulder check was added
The point of surge slash is the higher elemental and status capability, in some cases putting the damage on par or greater than the standard move set
Man Hinoa and Minoto sure had a makeover 😆 Also I didn't know that the counter charge slash gets aplified by Offensive Guard.
Currently trying to make a Foray Surge Slash build.
been a GS main since MH1 so im not going to stop now lmao
Surge Slash is useful for putting out damage on monsters you don't know very well and can't read as much. Or monsters that fly across the fucking area for a buttslam and have shit hitzones unless enraged or toppled.
Im greatsword Main since MhTri. Was Always a nice weap
Imagine Stromgarm Stance with Frostcraft
Watching this knowing I'm gonna keep using the bug stick and nothing else
I really like the GS and appreciate it, but I miss my attacks so often. My depth perception is terrible in this game. Hunts with the GS take me around 15 minutes, but with nearly anything else, Im barely hitting 10. Granted this is a me problem and Im just getting used to GS in low rank, but I dunno, Id rather use something else I actually hit with
It gets better I still miss but less
Like you i definitely have a weird depth perception in this game. Really weird
practice with narga or yian. it takes time but the once you estitmate the reach and the monster attack it is actually so easy.
Also , backslide sets you up in the perfect spot for a wake up hit , so if you somehow still don't know the proper position , there's that I guess
To balance this out, they've added and buffed Frostcraft to affect TCS.
Weapon in thumbnail it's mod ?
Always love your videos.
Question though is strongarm stance in mhr base game, I have it on the PS5, not switch
it is on the expansion, which is coming this spring
Strongarm is indeed strong but super hard to use because the monsters move a lot and by the time you trigger the counter, the monster is either too far away or preparing a followup, both rendering Strongarm kinda useless. The game doesn't cooperate a lot with Strongarm.
0:26 with what did he counter ?
Seeing Modded Lagiacrus made me so nostalgic. They did him so dirty.
the backslide is absolutely insane imo. Sometimes, you can't use strongarm because of positioning or multi hits, whereas you can side step while skipping a charge level and punish the monster that way.
Thanks for the tip, I'll try to do that
If you face a monster that does alot of multihits just take Rageslash... deals a bit less damage but gains more power when getting attacked while using it.
I'm trying to make backslide work but the move is so confusing, you dodge to the side you input but facing the other way
Nobody is talking about Rage Slash. They nerfed it pretty hard, but you can still consistently dish out 1k dmg. If you have bloodrite and part breaker, you never have to stop attacking. I can sub10 A3 monsters. Trying to see if I can sub10 furious rajang
I’m with you 100% - unless you’re a speed runner, the ACS/Rage style of play seems to be so much more consistent (vs gambling on landing TCS)
Your build sounds really interesting! What armors are you using to get the best out of partbreaker/blood rite? Quiros crafting has probably made your build even stronger right…
Would be keen to see what you’re running and how the skills look? Cheers mate
yeah, rage slash pretty nuts. i main rage slash simply because uninterrupted charge attack and i can attack in any direction i want, which resulting more hits. for me, more hits = more dps.
The only weapon that is truly op is both bowguns and thats why I main them xd.
While charging LT forward just does not happen for the TCS I am hitting my head at this point.
I love playing GS in Sunbreak with hunting edge skill. Sometime I have more airtime than any insect glaive user 😁
In Rise I was Longsword-Main, now in Sunbreak, they made GS almost as agile as Longs word but with way more damage output.... I love it.
I saw someone do a very impressive speed run using hunting edge, in base rise it was a pretty bad skill but seems pretty cool now
12:00 god damn who ever made this mod is fucking good at his work
Gaurd Tackle might be useful if you use the rampage decoration the sharpend the weapon when you block. I am not a greatsword user, so I don't know how good it is.
at that point I'd rather use protective polish, the anti species deco is just too good for GS. Boosting your damage by 5% on a weapon that deals SO MUCH DAMAGE is too strong to give up in my opinion
@@darkhero2 understandable, I just wanted to try to think of a use case. But I guess the sacrifice of big number is too much.
While not ideal, that might be the only good use I can think of for that skill, and could be a pretty interesting one
That's a lot of damage... but can you yo-yo up the entire length of Narwa with it? 👀
What is the greatsword in the thumbnail?
Strongarm is very hard to use in multiplayer and I never play single player except doing fllower quests
Practice makes perfect, buddy
@@HowellDiesel Not all of us are mean't to use it.
@@awesomesauce5974 you're right, I've actually stopped using strong arm because of how boring the playstyle is. Now I use Hunting Edge and Surge Slash and my build is amazing!! Big damage, big mobility, and with Afflicted, I'm unkillable.
I was born with a greatsword in my hand. As far as I'm concerned the reason no other weapon in Monster Hunter.
my fy page is like why u should really play (almost) every weapon
Hi, good job. This video was so clarifying!!
So, what's da name of GS on your Thumbnail? It's design is so cool. I search all da game and couldn't find it.
I think all weapons now have their own interpretation of broken or op now just maybe not insect glaive
don't forgot you can also do high damage without armor
As a greatsword main something to take note of at 7:30 mark is when you put your barrel bomb down for your strongarm combo try to be weary of your teammates location or else you will blow them away like he does in that clip! I usually try to hit a tail or put my bomb far back enough that I don’t blow away my teammates, we don’t want to be the new long sword or cluster bomb guys😂
Oh yeah definitely, it's just our group of mates so we often *TRY* to hit as many as possible 😂
but I am wary of others locations when playing with random people
Eh it's fine, your TCS will do more damage than them anyway, it's fiiiiine 😂😁
I really have been enjoying GS with the hunting edge and surge slash combo. The combo just feels so fun for me because of how I can react to something such as the monster sidestepping by performing a upward slash mid combo to move forward, or get in some extra blunt with the second circular swing.
I have tried out strongarm stance, and I don't jive with it. I'd rather drag my large slab of metal into the air and plunge myself down on the monster with a charged attack that can be chained into a circle swing
i do this too i just spat upward wirebug then charge slash on the way down followed by the wide swing does a decent damage
Funny that everyone loses their minds when Longsword is strong, but when it's weapons like Greatsword, Bow or HBG, everyone celebrates
I thought that the gs of the miniature was that of tetsucabra berserker
I've tried putting points in offensive guard. It appears countering with strongarm doesnt proc offensive guard. The attack buff is not there when it counter an attack resulting no additional damage added to the attack post counter. The buff proc when you do a near attack block using ZR. CMIIW.
quick question, what sword were you using at 3:23
If you're asking because of the skin, it's a mod called "Hive Claymore from FF14"
What is the armor used in the thumbnail? It looks really cool
I started using Gs in rise because they changed everything I loved about HH. Lol.
What are the symbols in the top right of the monsters portraits
I haven't bought the game, but am planning to if the longsword is good enough as it was in iceborne, can someone tell whether it is that good or not(only solo player)!
it's EXTREMELY good
@@checco90ify cool then
Surge Slash is much easier than whatever gs has become if you haven't mastered either. The average player whiffs most true charged slashes. Easily the most difficult weapon to enjoy.
The reason you don't see many people using the switch cancell is because most of them use dereliction and don't want to lose the buff.
Switch to lance after rajang fight i had a tough time with GS there.
Sunbreak is good as a game but I sure hope all the wire bs and gazzilion counters don't get carried to main game.
A small correction on the surge slash combo: the horizontal sweeps (A on Switch, unsure which button it is on PS4 controller layouts) have armor at all 3 levels. I like using them to power through monster roars. The second hit of the second sweep attack even does impact damage!
Oh I thought it was only the last one, that's great to know, thank you
I think it's only the last one. I would know because I've been using elemental gs with it
I'd still think Tackle and Adamant Slash are safer options.
But thats on sunbreak not on rise , I have to use guard tackle twice to activate the true charge slash and I keep
Missing the second hit , but I prefer rage slash because it’s easier to hit and faster, I play mhr on PlayStation
Solo? Hell yeah, monster's attention is solely on you so easier counters and you can use bombs freely. In Multiplayer? Fuck no. Monster will be ping ponging in between players even with the increased attention deco, you better not use bombs either or you're fucking over your teammates.

I play hunting edge mega bonk lol
who needs to use a nerd counter when you don't even plan on getting hit
👆this
It depends on peoples personal preference and the monster you fight.
Try playing frontier sometime
Wait is the tetsu gs in the game or is that a mod?
It's a mod of the berserk tetsucabra
wait you dont explain them what guard tackle do? just say you dont like it at all? because if i re call guard tackle lets you skip to true charge slash or rage slash if the monster hits you during that animation
this is not a guide, I'm just talking about my experience with GS. I simply tried it, dislike it, and that's all
@@darkhero2 make sense
strongarm stance nerds be like "i can counter"
with hunting edge I can get a free big damage number after completing a combo and go straight back into a new combo faster than rolling and going back in
*I can also hit things in the air*
Cool story
“Monster Hunter World hunters were too strong.”
I love Rise, but the hypocrisy I hear from other Rise players is INSANE.
I totally get where you're coming from
This is why you should NOT play a greatsword....

Yeah not a skill for me but hate counters to much timing for me 😂 did try it but absolutely hate it 😂 and ot does shit damage if u dont use charges first so nah 😂 the other once are way better less damage but way better where u cant flinch while charging less damage but way better to be fair for me
But Dualblades & Bowgun still Overpowered . In this time u make 3k Hit . 7k+ Lbg 😂... its unbalanced
