Finally a guide that is actually aimed at beginners. I watched like 5 different ones and they go over all the moves for 30 minutes and don't give concise answers what is actually seeing active use and what not. One thing I would have added, is where to get to the training area but great video overall!
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the guide. I wanted to teach people actual relevant information so that's good to hear. My video focuses only on GS itself so I didn't include basic game functions, but you can go to the training area by selecting "Move around village" from the menu or radial menu, or travel there via boat from buddy plaza.
@@XanMH1 But you can only go there by the map/menu once you have been there before and the game doesn't indicate where that training area could be. Got me confused for a while and had to google it.
Honestly this is the first guide I've found to actually be effective in learning a weapon in Rise. Helped me out a ton as I'm doing my first great sword build (normally sword and shield).
Greatsword user since I started in 3U. Never needed another weapon. Although, I ALWAYS need to brush up on the basics for whatever reasons. This helps alot.
This. I got way way better with my SnS and creeping into TA territory clear times (not breaking records as I'm not keeping 100% uptime on item buffs, scripting, and rolling for low HP/favorable AI) just because I played GS so much.
I like that you can make up for a lot of time wasted running with a good TCS. My SnS does baby damage, so when i'm not attacking, which is often, because some monsters just like to frolick and shit, i lose a lot of damage potential. A good TCS on a weak spot are a good few seconds or minutes of an SnS tryharding the monster
You answered every question I had with "Grasp the Greatsword". Being able to aim swings anywhere was the only thing I was really missing. However, actually knowing the weapon in depth wouldn't hurt either.
Very good video, im still kinda new to MH but im loving it and I was considering upgrading the girth of my first weapon which was the longsword so this was really helpful
I use the guard a lot, idk what you mean. Yes, there are counters with wire bugs, but if you're out of them, blocking is your only real defense if you want to keep being aggressive. Blocking has saved me so much all the way through master rank, and the sharpness loss is miniscule (or positive with a certain decoration)
Blocking is not your only defense without wirebugs. Rolling/sprinting out of the way is a much stronger defensive option. It allows you to stay aggressive much better than guarding because you're not stunned by attacks' knockback with your weapon drawn, letting you position yourself and punish the monster where it hurts. Also the sharpness loss on guarding is very significant. Great swords have around 40 purple at endgame and you can lose all that after blocking a few high knockback attacks. Sure, you can kill monsters with yellow sharpness, or with a full tank guard + guard up builds, or by using only circle attacks, but my videos' goal is to teach you the proper, optimal way to play GS.
Hey man, just seen your video, used to play GS in world and struggled heavily in mhrise, your guide is exactly what i was looking for, thank you for it 👍
This is an awesome great sword tutorial. I was playing GS like any other weapon, to include the hammer and hunting horn. I now recognize where and how to improve my skills. Thanks!
Nice video! I've been struggling with GS on MHRise for a long time, even after watching tutorials it's difficult to put the moves into practice because of different monster scenarios. Here's to putting your tutorial to practice soon! 👍
lol I remember back when the strong charge was the furthest you could go. I love TCS, but I do miss when it felt like every move in the GS' arsenal was useful.
Yes. I enjoyed the more simpler moveset Back Then, allthough Valor GS in GU with the the Hit and Run Playstyle was the Most fun Playstyle for me. Sadly, critdraw was gutted in Rise :(
This is helpful cause I'm trying out the Great sword or gs and if there are any recommendations for switch skills for either red or blue or both scrolls please let me know as well as anything else I need to know
Not that hard. I recommend practicing against a more difficult monster that you enjoy fighting first. Just start out with trying to do regular charge slashes after his attacks then implement tackles and TCS. You can also start with Rage Slash first as that's a lot easier to use.
Finally learning GS! QQ questions: 1. When I try the Power Sheathe, like at 10:45 , it doesn't always me invul, I get stomped by the training dummy. The only way it seems to work consistently is like if the sword is on the ground from a charged attack. Is the window super narrow? Can it be extended with evade window? 2. 8:46, I do not have the "overhead slash" appear when I press X from neutral position. I get just a "Charge". Is this changed in subreak, was it bad?
Power sheathe has 0,33 seconds of s which start right as you press the button. You get s while your hunter is throwing the bug. I don't think evade window works with it. To get the quick overhead slash, you have to hold the left stick in a direction while pressing the attack button.
Gotta say, so far I haven't really warmed up to GS in this game, which is odd because I've played GS a fair bit in Tri, 4U and World and always enjoyed it, but in Rise... I really cannot put the finger on it but something about it feels clunky.
I got Monster Hunter Rise for PS5 After getting all the Crowns/Trophies for MHW… I haven’t buy a armor and I beat every monster in the 5Stars rank with No Deaths. Funny that you call “Great Sword for Beginners” YOU ARE THE BEGINNER! lol
Great video guide (I guess) but I am super confused with the button layout on screen being Switch, subtitle button layout on a PS and I am on a Xbox controller
@@JDheroic 5th gen gs is all about TCS. You can still have fun with crit draw of course but you'll be doing much less damage. The monsters in Rise and Sunbreak are designed with counters and hyperarmor abilities in mind and it really shows.
They have setting guides which will highlight/outline your player model specifically when your camera sight is blocked by the monster you're currently engaging, but it's a menu setting, open up options and select "Game settings" should be near the mid to bottom called "Player Silhouette", the different "Types" are just what color you will be highlighted as through the monsters body. 👍
You can turn 45 degrees both ways from where you start charging. A good indication of where you'll hit is your hunter's left shoulder. Try to get into the habit of pushing the left stick in the direction you want to hit while charging and keeping it there until you release the attack button.
The developers kept them around from older games I guess. Every weapon has useless moves, because the developers aren't very good at balancing the whole moveset of weapons.
I wish Capcom would rid themselves of the "vestigial" attacks of Greatsword, mainly Wide Slash and the Rising Slash. As mentioned; they're useless. So why are they even still in the game? Why does Capcom insist that these useless relics of MH1 still remain in the game when they have no purpose? It's frustrating. Why not get rid of guarding as well? It'd be interesting to see guard replaced with a sprinting ability that uses A LOT of stamina. To me, either give GS a little bit of DPS with a moveset similar to both Switch Axe's Sword mode or Charge Blade's Axe mode. This would cater to people like me that like Greatsword but is generally uninterested in its charged attacks. Or double down on its charged attacks and use different attacks that align more with what Greatsword is trying to be. Tackle or Slap or the lunging wide swing should all be attacks that you can immediately do.
This game is an Switch exclusive and just recently got added to Steam, so why are you using PS buttons for movement? Even on the video it shows Switch’s buttons. Out of curiosity.
Calling the Greatsword amazing after stating half its moves are useless is quite the claim. So I've played the hell out of freedom unite and MH4 ultimate and main GS in both of them. Came back for Rise and I must say this weapon feels terrible to use next to hammer. I know its mostly b/c the tackle is new to me but the core GS gameplay feels left in the dust in this faster paced monster hunter.

Reasons to pick Greatsword:
1. The greatsword is a sword but greater.
End.
I agree with this 110%

Hello is crit draw still a good skill for gs? I remember using it back at the old games
I'm picking up the greatsword as my 8th weapon so this guide was very helpful
I use guard tackle cause it doubles for me as a "oh no" button for when I get caught with my pants down trying to do a charge....

Can you please do a comparison video for combo 1-4 and their dps? Combo 1 was nerfed from World and is very slow is all I know

Can you make some vidio how to use Guard Tackle properly
I just love Guard tackle ,but evry one in YT not using it in their vidio
You can change your aim like that? I swear ive missed like a million attacks because im liked up a little to the wrong direction.
I agree with all of this but the freaking bashitkan is awful with this weapon with him constantly moving around its nothing but a pain
I wonder how to use power sheath backward after TCS, I've tried moving my camera backward and it's not working. FYI, I'm using M/KB.
You have to use the movement key backwards, not the camera. Try to press S while your camera is facing forward.
The one thing that I do not like about the Greatsword is that when it's charging up and you do the cartwheel/ double hit I can't see where I'm going
My hardest time with gs is aiming the true slash when charging. Like I don't know wheter it is going to hit at the direction I want no indication.
You can turn 45 degrees both ways from where you start charging. A good indication of where you'll hit is your hunter's left shoulder. Try to get into the habit of pushing the left stick in the direction you want to hit while charging and keeping it there until you release the attack button.
kind of a dumb question, but are you using rampage gs with different skins or are you actually using lagombi, mizu, etc?
I'm using Rampage with layers
May someone tell me what is the point of Overhead Slash, Wide Slash, and Rising Slash if all I’m supposed to do is charged attacks?
The developers kept them around from older games I guess. Every weapon has useless moves, because the developers aren't very good at balancing the whole moveset of weapons.
Which monsters specifically should I be using Rage Slash on?
You can use it for anything, but iirc Teostra is the only monster where it's better than TCS.
Do you stream on twitch regularly?
I have been taking a break but will be back for Rise PC.

If we take guard tackle and TCS, can we skip stun resistance as long as we're careful with ACS?
In that case you can, but level 1 decos are pretty useless anyway so not sure what you'd gain from that.
Wide slash follow up is true charge which gives you an immunity window and can knock enemies over if they are charging you. It's not useless
No, that's strong wide slash, which I've pointed out as one of the good moves.
