From Holy To Heretic | Why I Left Christianity

  • I was born and raised in the southern baptist church and spent my childhood and teenage years devoting myself to what I believed to be the mission of Christ. After years of devotion and bible study, I realized that I no longer had good reasons to believe. I lost almost everything I knew and loved to carve out my most authentic path...but it was worth it. I hope that by sharing my story I can bring some comfort, clarity, or validation to others out there who are struggling with their beliefs, too.
Please keep in mind that all everything I say here is my subjective opinion, and is intended to deconstruct fundamentalist/evangelical/conservative Christian ideologies from an ex christian perspective

Yup. Very relatable. When a Christian says "you probably weren't a real Christian" they have no idea how hard I tried to get it "right" because I loved god/Jesus so much. As soon as you look into things, because you want to understand it better, it all falls apart.

I left the faith as a teenager after I read the Bible cover to cover. Still took me years to actually accept this fact fully (leaving the cultural womb). And only now, at age 53, after both my parents and all my grandparents are gone ... Only now do I feel free to talk about it with my family.
Reading the Bible: I have come to the conclusion that i don't think you can call yourself a Christian until you have read and agree to the terms and conditions. I.e. not until you have read the Bible. Ideally twice. Cover-to-cover. If this were the requirement, the religion would be largely dead.

But I could say plenty about, for example, small details that are wilfully taken out of context to support other narratives. Only this week, my local pastor was bleating out the common Isaiah 'prophecy', which I am satisfied very clearly does NOT foretell the birth of Jesus from the Virgin Mary some 700 years later (as corroborated by a fair few Christian historians, also).

Hey kristi, I’m 23 and I grew up Pentecostal Christian. And I had so much existential dread since I was 3 because of religion. So much stress and anxiety because I was trying so hard to fit myself into boxes that can be checked and that’s what children do when they grow up, when I was 16 my pastor mocked a couple for leaving our church and I immediately felt nauseous by it and I thought that was God telling me it was time to find a new church but really it was my moral compass that felt disgusted by his actions, there were other bts things too. But after 2 years I left the new church my family attended. It wasn’t until I let go of God that I found my existentialism deteriorating and my anxiety levels going down. I’m now at a point where I don’t really care if there is a God or not. Like I don’t want anything to do with him or religion. And that’s okay. We’ll all die one day and if I perish so be it but on this earth I will enjoy my life the best that I can and be the kind person I can be. Your videos help me when I start to feel that anxiety rising again because growing up indoctrinated is traumatic and even I have my days. It gives me comfort to know that I’m not alone in my thinking. Thank you for being an outspoken soul, I’m trying my best to be outspoken as well. My family still are believers and that’s fine with me, I’m lucky that they still love me the same and still talk to me not all people who renounce their religion get that.

i’m also more open to being friends with people who believe differently. being a “good christian” only caused me to be bitter, anxious, depressed and isolationist. but i did meet my husband due to my faith and i accumulated a lot of skills in the process so i don’t totally regret the journey.

I can't believe what everyone is writing here to this poor person! Comments like "There is no hope for you??" Really?? I can't believe I just read that in one of these responses to this person who has bared their feelings to the public! Who gives us the right to judge like that!!! Until we draw our last breath there is ALWAYS hope!! Everybody, it is NOT the church that saves you!!! The organized church of today is not what Jesus had envisioned or preached. They have twisted the Scripture and brought in so much secular stuff that has nothing to do with faith in Christ. I don't blame anyone for leaving the organized church of today, which is more like a social country club where you " pay dues for tithes" and get entertained, and if you dont "fit in" you're an outsider, and if you decide to join another church, you're ostracized by the members of the church you left. It's disgusting. Where in all the scripture does it say it's okay to do all that!! What does save you is your genuine faith in Jesus Christ and having Him constantly number one in your life. That's it!!. No denominations, no condemnation, no ifs ands or buts. And when you have Jesus as number one in your life, you are going to want to love and help others, NOT condemn them. This is why Jesus was so angry with the Pharisees. They were ritualistic and judgmental and all they thought about was their synagogue and affluence. They were hurting the people with their ritualism rather than applying the real truth of the Word. We should learn from that! Jesus said I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father but through me. So please, go back to simple genuine faith and read the Scripture for yourself. Dont let the hypocrisy of the church cause you to lose out on eternity. What the church does, and what you decide to believe and act on, are two totally separate things.

The best moment I had during my years as a Catholic was when I went to confession in 8th grade, when we were preparing for Confirmation - with our pastor, no less, who was known for old-fashioned, fire and brimstone sermons and had all of us CCD kids scared stiff - and I told him that I didn't really have anything to confess but that I was beginning to question my faith. I expected fully that he was going to be met with a very stern and intimidating lecture, and yet all he said was, "Good." I replied, "I'm sorry, Father, what?" He chuckled and said, "John, I recognize your voice. I know you and have known you since you were a baby. I'm the one that baptized you, don't forget. I've watched you grow up to be an intelligent and inquisitive young man, and I will tell you this: No one religion is for everyone. Religion itself is not for everyone. It's good that you're asking questions because I don't believe God gave us intellect and free will just to have blind Faith. He wants us to ask questions. Think about people who have made great changes, Galileo, Leonardo, Einstein, Martin Luther King. They challenged what was accepted as fact, they challenged what they knew to be unjust rules. I would feel that my part in your life as your pastor has been a success if you take an honest look at your beliefs and what you hold true and decide to leave the Church because it would be at intelligent decision. I know, you were expecting me to pull the hidden lever and drop the floor it and cast you straight to Hell. I'm not giving you any penance; you didn't do anything wrong. Go home and ask your questions until you have your answer. I have faith you'll choose what's right for you." It wasn't until years later talking to my parents about it that they revealed why they weren't surprised. Turns out, he had been raised Orthodox Jewish - his mother had been Catholic but converted to marry his father. When he realized that his mother's family's Catholic faith spoke to him more, he was disowned by most of his father's side of the family, so he fully understood the weight of questioning the faith you were raised in. And I will always appreciate that that final nudge to just go for it and leave Christianity came from the very man who baptized me into it.

Satan has many false religions and fake gods that he uses to confuse people to keep us from finding the ONE True Living God of the Holy Bible and to keep us from accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, because Satan does not want us to be saved, he wants us to be eternally separated from God just like he is.
But the ONE True religion in the world is God's True Church of believers in the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the Holy Bible, who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and been spiritually born again by God's Holy Spirit by believing that Jesus was God on earth Who died to pay for our sins for us and resurrected from the dead to defeat eternal death for us and believe Jesus is coming back again to set up His eternal heavenly kingdom for all people who accept Jesus Christ as their Savior to live in for the rest of eternity, forgiven of their sins and reconciled with God.
Paganism is another false religion from Satan, and actually it is synonymous with Godlessness. You cannot worship nature, the creation of God instead of worshipping the Creator Who created it, and you cannot worship any god of your choosing in the manner that you wish to worship. because that is false worship and idol worship. There is only ONE God, Savior and Creator of all things that exist, God Who gave us His Word, the Holy Bible. I agree with your quote, particularly as it is very applicable from a Christian's perspective, in their view of those who don't want to hear the truth, but want to remain in their own illusions. Its probably not quite the direction you were thinking of applying it, but nevertheless, from a Christian perspective it has validity.
We do need to acknowledge that what is a popular ideology or truth, in one era, is dismissed in another as being 'not true', mostly likely in an ever spinning spiral that has its influences in popularity and fashion, each new generation discovering "the new truth", but being dismissed by the next era of generations. Today's 'heros' will be tomorrow's comedians and the pursuit of truth is relentless. What one proudly announces today as new revelation or understanding, is tomorrow evaded as an embarrassment.
History can tell us much about this process, as it repeats itself endlessly.

    • @theonlyway5298
      @theonlyway5298 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@TheTruthKiwi Its flawed firstly because you are imposing a modern skeptical perspective anachronistically, on 2000 years of Christian faith, which is contextually inapplicable.
Nietzsche's statement, is a modern skeptical idea, that is founded upon his own modern philosophical ideas of Nihilism and Positivism. Unfortunately for Nietzsche, he spent the last 11 years of his life in a Mental institution with general paralysis and mental breakdown, having lost his sight, due to Syphilis - thus his philosophical ideas, did not in fact personally help him morally - still less spiritually! Having ideas is one thing, but proving they actually work is quite another!
Nietzsche had been a gifted man, but as with other men who have been given exceptional gifts but who did not give glory to God for them, his life in the end, was humiliating and very sad!
Regarding the statement itself, its isn't applicable, because it is based upon the false assumption that there is a dual conflicting consciousness between:
      a) wanting to believe in God
      and
      b) having a motive (in the statement indicated by: "don't want"), to protect that belief, while having an awareness of it being an illusion or delusion.
While (a) may well be true, (b) is far less likely to be true historically, because in the cultural context of the Christian west, for example, few if any would question the existence of God. The questioning of the existence of God as we know it today, is a relatively modern and mostly western idea, confined to a minority of the world's population.
      Additionally:
      c) the idea that "the truth" is that God 'doesn't exist', as you are applying his statement, is again based upon your own philosophical ideas and it cannot be assumed that those who believe in God, would countenance that as being 'the truth', any more than you can actually prove it is "the truth".
Thus in summary, while its interesting to hear your view and compare it with other people's views, experiences and beliefs, in the light of the above things which I have discussed here, I'm not convinced at all by the applicability of Nietzsche's statement, to the existence or continuum of religion.

I am writing to share the most incredible thing you will likely ever hear, and it has everything to do with your position if you will follow it. First, it is impossible that anything you can touch, taste, hear, see or smell on the face of the earth, be it lighting, tornados, rocks, life, minerals from salt to plutonium or anything that can be with the powerful telescope we have in orbit and beyond what we can see, that could possibly exist without having been created. Because of this, we can be sure that everything that is had to be made where there was absolutely nothing to make it out of. Romans 1:20 New International For since creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. So you see, there is a God. I myself have studied world religions in depth in college and much more so on my own time. I have found that the only religion that holds water is Christianity. I am no affiliate of any Christian denomination as they are called because the enemy has a very well received counterfeit in place in nearly all of them, and the condition is terminal. I am Messianic, where I find Truth to be most rightly applied and followed. The bill of rights we share is such a blessing. But I will quote TobyMcKeehan with Times are changing/With morals in decay/Human rights have made the wrong okay. I am only showing you the way as I have found it through much study and life experience. Perhaps my best case for Truth of this is found in the book of Habakkuk 1-2:17 where he was given a vision of Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany. Some very strong and interesting proof is in the discovery of Sodom and Gomorrah. This is in these videos. Brimstone found there is over 95 percent pure. The purest sulfur anywhere else is just over 45% and is found near active geothermal regions. Brimstone such as is found near these two infamous cities is found nowhere else on earth. Yet here it is still, a God-given supernatural element to warn those who would live against Him. 2 Peter 2:6 If He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction, reducing them to ashes as an example of what is coming on the ungodly; He is love or He wouldn't have warned us.After much consideration I found truth best taught and followed as a Messianic. Christian here, as for a lot of the theological questions and confusions you had, I have similar ones all the time. I think it’s important and healthy for all Christians to wonder about how reality works and why things are the way they are within their own religion. I remember my catholic grandfather and I got into a debate about Christianity and Catholicism, and he was telling me “The catholic doctrine is the infallible truth that is written by extremely intelligent, highly educated men who were guided directly by God. You can’t question anything!” I bluntly responded to him, “I think we should question everything! In the sense that we should look at everything critically in a healthy level, wondering why things are the way they are, so we can actually understand what we’re believing.” So I empathize and I definitely agree there are way too many Christians who just believe all these doctrinal and theological things without ever wondering “Why” or “How”.
At the same time, I know we probably aren’t going to definitively figure out the answers to some of these questions. It sucks, but honestly it doesn’t bother me too much. One thing that rationalizes my faith in Jesus in my own mind is that I know from firsthand experience that a spiritual world including demons does indeed exist, and I also know that scientifically a higher being who is infinitely powerful existing logically has to be the case (it’s kinda hard to explain the reasoning, but basically there are multiple plains of reality/states of existence, and they all are confined to laws, but all of existence cannot logically be confined by laws, and laws cannot logically just be put in place by nothing, so there must be an ultimate plain of reality, one with zero confines and all power, and one that is sentient and responsible for creating all the laws put in place over the other plains. This is what God is. God essentially is the highest reality, hence why he refers to himself as “I Am”. He simply is! He is is!) anyway and I’ve looked into the other religions, and I still continue to do so, and you can argue I have a bias from being raised Christian, but Christianity is the only one that makes sense and strikes a chord in me, and I’ve just seen these little signs in life that point to it.
Like I said sadly we’re not going to be able to understand everything we really wanna understand, and the Bible certainly doesn’t reveal and clarify as much as we’d like. But as long as you live your life with open eyes, a heart open to the truth, and just kinda *feel* reality, be in touch with it spiritually, I believe you will find the truth. I certainly don’t have the whole truth, not even close, but I think I get more in touch with it each year just by doing this.
11:02 I think your heart was in the right place but I think you may have been too intense about it. I think even though I get this was a very frustrating and even scary thing for you, I think God would’ve wanted you to calm yourself a little and just open your heart to him. He’d want you to, with a genuine heart, not angry at God, but just open to whatever the truth might be, ask him to show you the truth. Trying to filter away any biases or worries or angers you might have, just having a pure genuine intention. And be okay with it if he doesn’t show you everything you want to know right away. Trust that if he’s real, and if you keep asking this of him with a heart fully open to him, he will show you what you need to know one way or another, even if it’s just gradual, you know? What I’m wondering is, did you pray to him much about it on your journey of trying to understand him? Or was it mostly you seeking this understanding of him more so just on your own almost as if he’s a stranger alien separated from you?
Anyway this was just my perspective as a Christian, I hope nobody minds. I like to find mutual understanding and have discussions with people whether they’re Muslim, atheist, Hindu, Christian, ex-Christian, Satanist, etc. Also it was a bit messy of a comment, but I hope regardless it makes some sense and you see it!!
Oh also, when it comes to how we can truly have free will when it comes to whether we go to Hell or Heaven when God is all knowing and created us, nobody can really pretend to fully wrap their head around how that could work. When it comes to the nature of aspects of reality and God we often fall into the territory of frustrating, unsolvable paradoxes, whichever way you look at things, including the idea that we must not have free will and just be meaningless puppets with predetermined destinations because God was all knowing when he made us. That limits a being who anything is possible through. So I know us having true free will works somehow even though it makes absolutely no sense it my brain when I try to really think of the mechanics behind it.

Just so you know, your recommended approach definitely doesn't inevitably lead to the Christian God. Truth has always been the most important thing to me, and when I realized I didn't think Christianity was true I absolutely prayed to God about it. I asked him to show me the truth, whatever it may be. I tried my best to truly evaluate all different viewpoints I could find and see if they withstood scrutiny. To completely separate my anger at the humans that had boxed me into one view that I was told most be right from whatever God may actually be.
The end result is that I'm very sure if there is a God it isn't the Christian one. Maybe there is a God that has led me to that belief. But I'd say one bit difference between myself and most Christians is that even though I feel I was very honest in my search and as diligent in seeking truth as I could be, I'm unwilling to say that what I've come to believe is true is in any way from a God. To be fair, maybe there are actually Christians or Hindus or Muslims that God has given an actual revelation that has shown them some truth about whatever God may actually exist. But I haven't seen anyone give any better reason for think that than they essentially really feel their belief is right and true and makes sense. And that just isn't anywhere close to enough reason for me to say that I've found more truth about God than any other person.
It seems that if there is a God he just doesn't want to be found by some people. Or maybe there is no God and the people that claim to have found one are just mistaking parts of their thoughts and beliefs for some God. I don't really know how I would tell the difference as someone that hasn't seen anything I could truly say I think was from some God.

Christianity itself cannot be categorized as a religion but as a lifestyle, sacrifice and something like a stigma attached to the early Christians.
So even those that call themselves christians don't live to the expectations these days, reason why we called christians by birth or circumstances don't go far or last long in the faith..
But because we want to continue in our sinful ways, we tend to dish away the cross and sacrifice to live the way we want.
Remember, we can't cheat the judgement of God.... Except a man is born-again (genuine Born again in Christ) he can not see the kingdom of God.
Kingdom of God is personal and it's only through Christ that you will understand it better
Matthew 6:33 says, seek first the kingdom and his righteousness....
Without these two things you won't understand the rest, for Jesus Christ is the only way, Truth and life..
Meaning, you can only make the kingdom of God through Christ, you can only understand God and his ways through Christ.

If you love yourself repent of your sins (lying, hatred, unforgiveness, sexual sins, taking the Lord’s Name in vain, stealing, dishonouring your parents etc) & believe in Jesus for forgiveness of sins. (Jesus died on the Cross as a sacrifice and defeated death by rising from the dead)

@@leslieseptember6050 I questioned for 9 years what real Christianity was. But, I had other interests and didn't look as deeply as some. Just enough life experiences that led me to Q's that made me realize there really is no reliable evidence/proof. But, read something by Bart Ehrman. He's an ex-fundie Xian, still married to an Xian (in case you don't know, 'X' is an acceptable abbreviation for Christ- it has to do with Medieval history stuff), he has a PHD in theological matters (but he is hardly the only scholar that's an ex-believer, just well known) that explains all the errors and contradictions he found a long the way, all the different cultures and other religions it has commonalities with. He also learned the different languages the Bible was written in and points out that some translations, from one language to another, simply can not be that accurate bc the some languages don't have a word that has the same meaning as what was written.

@@jezebelvibes No, you're not. Judgement is on a personal basis. Now, honesty... I feel sorry for Kristi. I know pity probably innervates her. Maybe someone let her down. She looks like she just wants someone who will listen to her. Her "ministry" is trauma. How can someone so articulate vilify the Creator of Heaven and Earth? Perhaps the shock of realizing who she is, and who she is not, was too much.
But it's not the end of the world. Everyone gets subjected to the same deception. Her choler she should direct to the one true deceiver.
Believe it or not, those things she claims absent in God, are present. She just doesn't know it. He's not excluding viable people.
He must separate those who can be part of the perfect system from those who would undermine it.
Someone should tell Kristi there is a place of refuge for her on the day of God's wrath, if she will repent and submit herself completely, and I'm sure that would be forthright.
I don't think entry into the heart of things would be on the cards; it wouldn't be up to this writer, of course, at least as far as I know. After all, she spent at least a year undermining everything she could about the Bible. Yet, hers could be a voice to bring those led astray, back to God. And who knows? I think it's the thing they do with telling you you're a sinner for having certain thoughts... the coveting... and that's the hook with which they hold you under. Once you realise you're not a sinner for thinking certain things... that the real source of happyness is actually realising: 'hey, I have these thoughts, but don't let them take over my life...', they are on to something there, but they exploit it in stead of coming to terms with them.
There's also the thing that they tell you 'you could have done more', and that in itself becomes a sin, I got that a lot from having an education in a catholic rather strict boys-school...
And three is always a good number, they tell you that you have to be grateful for your talents, you can't take personal satisfaction for them... that also drags one down...

Our faith is what we give God by our belief in Jesus and His completed work and self sacrifice on the cross on our behalf to pay our sin debt and die in our place for those sins. We are not saved by our own works least we would boast about it. We can never achieve redemption back to God on our own because we are inherently wicked and not perfect. Don't mix the topic brethren
Christianity is not a religion but a lifestyle, sacrifice and something like a stigma attached to the early Christians.
Seek Jesus Christ today personally, so you can be saved.
      Thank you.

You're right. " Religion" doesn't work for everyone. And every "religion" is going to say their way is the right way to live life. But I know only one belief where a man suffered horrific tortures at the hand of his fellow man, was crucified, rose from the dead with over 500 witnesses, and also proclaimed himself as "the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes through the Father but through me." And on top of that, Jesus fulfilled over 300 prophecies in the Scripture written over the span of thousands of years before His birth. No other religion can proclaim this.

Pt. 1 th-cam.com/video/0QsgY115EFc/w-d-xo.html Pt. 2 th-cam.com/video/8plh4NMoQs8/w-d-xo.html And here is where the remains of pharaoh's army is found in the red sea. th-cam.com/video/X3NuAkXUwu0/w-d-xo.html Gnesis 19:24 New International Version Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah--from the LORD out of the heavens. Here are two of the videos I found on this. th-cam.com/video/DBSIs2bHi5g/w-d-xo.html

The biggest problem the church has is that it has selective enforcement. It doesn't ignore fornication and adultery but it gave up fighting against them, and is instead fighting against something else that it THOUGHT was less popular. Took the road of least resistance hoping to retain its membership. That's a big reason why God is allowing the church to decline. When you ignore God's methods hoping to achieve his ends it just doesn't work. He takes it all away when you think you can do it better than he can. The church of today is learning that the hard way. They're losing members because they thought they knew better than God how to retain them.

@@ChristianApologeticsProject So the argument is, "you never really were a Christian"? Ok, so there was a fork in the road as to how I could interpret your comment and I got the wrong one. I apologise about that and the following arguments that had no place here.
However, I gave the dictionary defination at the very start. That withstanding still shows I was a Christian because I related to it's teachings. Yes, I've since dropped those teachings, but I still once held them.
Jumping back to the mockery, I'd mentioned in my original message that my religious family had caused me some issues. Seeing a complete stranger on the net apparently taking a swing at me too set me off. I'm not proud of that. I apologise again.
I still consider myself a former Christian. That's my history.

@@Chemeleon86 Being born into God's family is not about YOU! It is irrelevant whether YOU "related" to any text, whether it is the Bible or some "Christian" author's book, whereby YOU thought that made you a Christian. Being born of GOD is what matters. If you're not born of GOD (literally "born from above," as Jesus taught in John 3:3-5), then you're not a Christian. Persons born of GOD remain Christians, because "salvation is of the Lord," and what GOD does, YOU cannot undo. People do not become Christians because of their own efforts, nor can they cease to be a Christian by their efforts. Salvation, or becoming a Christian, is by God's unmerited favor, whereby He chooses whom He will "according to the purpose of His will" (Eph 1:5). Hence, a Christian can no more undo what GOD has done to become a child of His than what you or I could do to undo what our human parents did to bring us to be as their sons or daughters. If our efforts to be or not be Christians was relevant, "then Christ died for no purpose" (Gal 2:21).
That said, I accept your apology. It is not my intention to "take swings" at anybody, personally, but to destroy the foundations they set up "against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ" (2 Cor 10:5). What Kristi has erected here, in her own personal hostility, probably toward something similar to your experience, even though indirectly toward God and Jesus, is a fortress she has been deceived into believing will bring her solace. It will bring none, though. What she calls "deconstructing" is really nothing more than self-destruction, or the very thing Satan wants her to do. It makes his task easy if a person will simply destroy themselves without him having to do much more than plant a God-defying thought in her head, and then stoke her irrational emotions a bit, and before long she self-destructs beneath a cloud of nihilism, despair, and hopelessness.
Let me finish by letting you know that I want you be a Christian, just not the wishy-washy, doctrinally-dumb variety found in so many "Christian" churches today. I want you to stand on the solid rock, who is Jesus, so that when an imposter, an apostate, or self-proclaimed atheist comes along, you can easily spot the fallacies in their supposedly sophisticated arguments that they claim is "rational" or "reasonable." That way you can stand and not fall for their deceitful tropes and conceited implications that they are a god. Until such time, have a great day! I look forward to conversing with you in the future, hopefully on a better footing that we got started.🙂

Christianity is not a religion but a lifestyle, sacrifice and something like a stigma attached to the early Christians

Wow! Your story sounds almost identical to mine. Raised Southern Baptist, saved (baptized) at about 5 or 6, doubted if that was good enough at that such young an age too. Went to a Bible camp at about 15, moved me! burst out in tears at a prayer meeting during camp. Decided then to either become a preacher or work with kids as a youth minister. Dedicated my full effort to studying the Bible. But as I delve into it more, it just opened more questions and doubt. Met a girl in high school that was a Chistian, any girl I dated then had to be a Christian. I was still devout then. But as we dated, I began to question more, and me and my girlfriend grew apart as her faith was unchallenged. When I was introduced to the philosophy of Calvinism, and only a few are chosen to be saved (not all that believe), no matter what you do. Well, I already doubted my faith, but yeah, I had problems with that concept too. Me and my Christian girlfriend broke up when I was 19. By then I was pretty much an agnostic. But I kept going to church because of "Pascal's Wager", I thought I just could be being lured away by the Devil, so I needed to keep the faith to avoid Hell (unless the Calvins were right, and I had no choice anyway). The Calvin philosophy may have had more influence than I thought. The Idea that God was not a democratic god of freewill still doesn't sit well with me. A tyrannical God that demands blind thoughtless obeisance without thought or freewill or threat of eternal punishment (and your efforts may be in vain anyway)? I tried a few other churches too. I went to Jehovah Witnesses and even seriously thought about Judaism.

Your story is very similar to the one that is shared by many people that have been hurt or deceived by the religious system embedded in the christian church. I've been a christian for 40 years. I've been through several human and quite defective, hurting and confusing behaviours in the church. But I never quit because my focus was not the church. My focus was HIM. I'm very imperfect. Humans are very imperfect. Church is filled with humans, so church is imperfect. So there was a point in my life where God tought me to LISTEN to HIM. He cut my job and send me 400 Km away from home to work in a warehouse where I needed to live during that time. So I said: " ok, I'm here " and I started to pray at 6 AM there every day and suddenly happened: I started to hear God. I said: " Oh, so this is how you speak ! " And He said: " I'm always talking to you but you are so distracted with so many voices and noises ". After that my relationship with God changed dramatically. I got to know Him in a way that I was never aware of despite of my time " in church ". And yes: He is indeed much, much different and much more than that we are tought in the church or how many interpret the Bible. So, bottom line, what we truly need is to develop an intimate relationship, one on one, face to face with God, talking to Him and allow Him to speak to us. It takes time and patiencie but HE SPEAKS and teaches. And definitely He shows us who we are for Him and who we are in Him. He is the only one we need to listen to. God loves you !!

You know this, in your whole being, this statement stands on its own merit. So a god that would invent eternal torture for failure to believe in it, understand it properly or worship it is a despot. If there was such a god, it would be utterly unworthy of human adoration. You and I would no more worship it than worship someone who abuses animals just because they have the power to torture something into compliance. Hell is a human invention used to control people. Teaching young children that they are destined for Hell just for being born unless they believe a bunch of unverifiable claims is flat out child abuse. They resort to that because they don't have anything else to keep people trapped, the claims simply don't hold up on their own. I'm sorry you were a victim of that. Congratulations on finding your way out, you are very special to be able to break free so young. Trust yourself and don't look back. Your own heart is better than the religion you were raised with. Jesus took care of all your sins on the cross with his EVERLASTING bloodshed. Past present and future. The Holy Spirit seals all believers for eternity. You can now rest in God's GRACE instead of trying to keep yourself "right" with works, which is the trap Satan wants us to fall into. Either becoming overly prideful egomaniacs, or perpetually broken & ashamed to the point of walking away. Jesus says "my yoke is light". We strive in discipleship because it pleases our heavenly Father and helps our walk in this world avoid pitfalls, not because we have to maintain a scale or "teeter totter" of Salvation status. I really hope this encourages you to not walk away from your free gift of salvation. If you get the chance you should check out "Pastor Joseph Prince" on youtube and see if that helps you as well. I should have been traumatized, but since my studies I am sure of what is true and what not. So I do not regret a thing. Just very, very happy that I am free of the burden that the bible puts on us. Yes, we lost family and friends, but we still love them, for indoctrination is a terrible thing.
Glad that you found yourself......keep going...we only have this life.❤

I just found your content recently and it really resonates with me. My path was a bit different. I started in a very kind of strict Baptist church that I started going to when my mom met a man who she ended up marrying when I was about 5 years old. I didn't have that very early exposure to indoctrination so my idea of God was very abstract and undefined. My new stepfather was an alcoholic and when my mom asked church members for help, they said to keep it secret because it would bring shame on our family. So we left to a more charismatic church when I was about 8. I didn't read the Bible much but I believed what my church leaders told me about it. I found the Bible to be very hard to understand.
When I was maybe 11 years old I went to church camp and I loved it so much and was so moved by the worship. I felt very devoted to Jesus. When I came home, I asked my mom to go again, and I did.
When I reached the age of 13, I started learning about different belief systems and other gods. When I discovered that some of the biblical stories were borrowed from much older stories, such as Noah from the epic of Gilgamesh, I was shocked. I felt my faith cracking and started to question why I believed in this stuff. I became interested in Buddhism and also the beliefs of indigenous peoples who didn't have exposure to the Judeo-Christian model before exposure to white Europians. I wanted to understand the role of Shamans and what they believed. I took a world religions course in high school.
There is much more to this story, but I won't ramble on much longer lol. I find it fascinating that many atheists were very devoted in their religion, and their faith was deconstructed by their own efforts to understand the Bible and God.
    Thank you

your story is sort of an amalgam of the faith paths of about half a dozen people I know pretty well. among which, a couple of exes of mine and at least one cousin who surprisingly still self-identifies as christian. I don't even know for sure if the others do, since some of them sort of stopped talking to me. But I do know SOME of the route
they had been on. Not a picnic, any of it.

People often say, “I’m not hurting anyone so it’s ok to sin (lying, stealing, sexual sins, disrespecting parents etc)” The same God who said to love your neighbour first said to love Him to the best of your ability. If you carry on sinning, then you do not love God but are selfish like the devil so you will be joined to your father in hell or repent of your sins and believe in Jesus as God so Jesus adopts you as His child and you will join Him in Heaven forever.

The “problem of evil” always plagued my thoughts when I sat in the pews as a young person. That, and the “selective love” other Christians showed to people of the world.

    • @danboyigomsuk2027
      @danboyigomsuk2027 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Look, Christianity is your personal relationship with God. Don't look at what others do and criticize them. Each of us, including you, would one day, account for his actions in this world. The Bible is very clear on that word, 'love' or 'charity'. The Bible instructs us to love all; and to love even those who hate you; pray for them. That is the straightforward instruction. So, when you say 'other Christians' show "selective love", they are not the Bible. Follow the Bible words. Those who show 'selective love' do not understand what Christianity is all about. Accordingly, do not join them or look at them. They are in no way any role model. The Bible is your role model. Period!

So relatable, so much of what you said was similar to what I went through recently, except my journey was not over as a long a period. Well, you have to ask yourself why the truth is important. That's not really a given. Truth isn't important if it doesn't have some kind of inherent meaning. And it's really difficult to say it only has meaning within the fickle mind of man. Man is susceptible to changing the truth too often to give it any kind of real value.

the petri dish metaphor is pretty apt. a living walk of faith can lead you anywhere and for a lot of people on this thread it already has.
all I can say is that it is probably not wise to expect to find "all of the truth" in any one place nor in any single belief system. Personally I am most
attracted to the ones that just encourage ASKING and INQUIRING and do not pretend to provide answers. I know and admire some christians who
have discovered that, and try to live it. Most of the other older faith traditions have already figured it out. Christianity is just one of the younger ones
that has not discovered its own mortality, sort of as a teen human might not.

The issue at hand is sin and God’s nature of being just. Sin brings suffering (the pleasure is short term, and the suffering is long term-on earth and in hell forever). God brings Righteousness (may have short term suffering followed by long term pleasure- on earth and in Heaven).

I wasn't a devout Christian growing up but I remember being baptized at 10 yrs old. I went to church through my teens. Finally thought it wasn't for me bc of *insert excuse*. Got deployed and all excuses were removed so I really got into god. Every day was a study group. I know I tried a little after I got back to find a church home but I wasn't able to. Then my dad died and my bf died some years a part. Watched zeitgeist and that made me think even more that maybe none of it was real. I've been trying to tell people but I never knew enough of the Bible to debate it and show its inconsistencies. Didn't know the words to support why I don't believe. That's where you come. You validate me. Thank you

Christianity is not a religion but a lifestyle, sacrifice and something like a stigma attached to the early Christians
Seek Jesus Christ today personally, so you can be saved.
      Thank you.
