Why I Left Christianity [Deconstructing Dubblup]

  • It was really tough to share this.
About a month before making this video, I started questioning my faith.
I had been struggling with some of the Christian beliefs for a while and it felt like in a moment, everything I thought I believed in stopped making sense.
In all honesty, it never made sense.
I’ve always had trouble accepting the bible and the stories within as fact. No matter how hard I tried.
And so began my deconstruction journey.
In this video I talk about my personal experience and what ultimately led to me leaving Christianity behind.
I’m open to all respectful dialogues and perspectives and would love to further this conversation.
If you have a deconstruction story, please share.
    Thanks for watching!

Thanks for sharing your story. I’ve been going through deconstruction for over a year now and at times, it’s been uncomfortable and I feel a bit empty due to old habits when I identified as a Christian, but the most liberating thing for me was understanding and saying that I’m agnostic and just don’t believe anymore

The last line of you comment rings so true for me. Since I posted this, I’ve gotten a lot of people messaging me and quoting bible verses without taking time to understand my perspective. I found so much peace when I finally stopped trying to force myself to believe and accepted that I don’t know

@@MrDubblup I totally understand where you’re coming from. There were so many who still tried to push scripture and the typical Christian cliches but respectfully, it just doesn’t touch me like it does them. If they’re happy and warm with that, cool, but to me, the Bible is just words on a page. I always remain respectful though until pressed into a corner and then all bets are off. Lol. Keep doing your bro! 👍🏾

Oh I lost a lot of people that claimed to love me regardless of my beliefs. I am so glad for this plumb line in my life that had brought the genuine people into my life. Thank you. The calm in your voice accompanies the strenght of your message. Christianity gives me a lot of anxiety and isolates me from my true feelings. Especially since my mother uses the religion to deny her insecurities and anxiousness. It's quite debilitating and it took me a long time to break free from the psychic mindgames. I was basically bullied in and out of Christianity. I'm glad I'm out. I'm still defensive and at times hostile towards Christians. Funny enough I repeat the mantra "forgive them father for they do not know what they do" to keep calm and move on. 😂❤

@@MrDubblup The story is longer than this, but in summary, in my old church, there were some issues with the lead pastor. People tried to talk to him about what they thought was wrong, but he just gave sermons about obedience for years, implying we couldn't have opinions or suggestions and just needed to obey the leaders of the church because God speaks through them. I used to preach what he told me to preach, and sometimes I had to warn people about bad things happening to them if they didn't obey 'God's chosen.' At first, I didn't see a problem, but then it started to feel like manipulation. After years, I began to notice how controlling it was and started researching how church leaders use these tactics to get people to do whatever they want, and I saw it happening with my own eyes. This made me question everything. It took me three years of praying, talking to other pastors, and doing research. I even confronted the pastor, but nothing worked, so I decided to leave the 'church life' for good. It hurt to part ways because the church life was actually my life, and I even considered becoming a pastor. I left the church, and I've never regretted it, not even one day. That was seven years ago.

It took me 10 years of research to reach this point which I reached a couple weeks ago now I'm into other peoples deconstruction stories. I think A lot of people dont understand how many years & how many hours of study some us put in wanting to believe. But the more I researched the more the whole thing fell apart. Its a little sad but it very freeing. I'm a truth seeker. I love studying history & ancient times & structures. As a fellow black man thank you for this video. I do believe there is a creator to whatever this existence is we experience. I just dont think its the god in the bible, or quran

    Hi Dubblup,
Thank you for this wonderful video. I have a similar story, and It was comforting and reflective to hear this vid of yours. I was part of a small Buddhist tradition for six years and now find it incomprehensible to be part of the tribe mentality that’s in there. And like the mention of your mother, I have been searching through various different traditions to try to find an identity.
I have a question if you don’t mind - do you still keep any type of spiritual practice, prayer or meditation for example?
    Much respect from UK,
    Cheers and thank you,
    Jared

I appreciate the thoughtful comment. I’m currently exploring my spirituality. Meditation is definitely a part of my spiritual journey, specifically for the mental benefits.
As far as prayer, it’s not a part of my experience in the sense that I’m speaking to god or anything like that. But I do privately express gratitude on a daily basis.
My interpretation of god is still under construction. I haven’t abandoned belief, but I’m no longer attached to one (or any) specific means of connecting with god.
But I’ve completely disassociated myself from the bible and don’t personally see it as any more than a work of fiction.
      Thanks for your comment!

I just watched every second of the video Curtis. Very thoughtful and also very transparent.
No one in my life was particularly religious, but after my mom remarried and the step father and family came into the picture, Baptist church was a must. I remember going on Sunday’s, Wednesday’s, camps, etc. but never felt connected. I often enjoyed it, was active in it, volunteered, everyone knew me but it usually was my time of the week to escape from my conservative stepdad who used religion as an authority to control and micromanage me.
Obviously, the hypocrisy of one can’t speak for the group as a whole, but being forced to memorize Romans chapter 5 and 8 as punishment isn’t a great memory. These things aside, I remember the fear of my grandparents going to hell for not being believers. The closer I wanted to be to God the worse my fear became. I stressed over it. Obsessed over the idea.
After I left home, I stopped going to church and would be what the church said is “Worldly”. Secular music so on and so forth. My stress lowered. The idea that If I didn’t do something X would be of consequence was frankly nice, but there is the emptiness of “seriously, wtf is the point here?”
I’m not entirely turned off to the idea of Christianity, but within the last 3 months have begun to dive into other faiths for example Islam, which is demonized in the west, but logically makes more sense in many ways. There’s the logic vs. emotional or faith based tug of war which I’m sure you experienced.
It’s easy to say “Curtis, you have to have faith!” Faith is the belief in the unseen but it’s also important to understand the Bible as we know it was assembled by the Papacy and even then men have dissected, translated, and interpreted words from Aramaic, to Greek, to Hebrew etc etc.
    So where is the truth?
The Abrahamic religious say the same. Discuss the same God, with the messages often serving as hyperboles. To your point, God isn’t floating on some cloud and a serpent didn’t necessarily tempt man, but even so, what is exaggerated and what is not?
You can go to one Christian church and based on the denomination their sermons may differ from another.
Interesting journey and thanks for highlighting it boss! Got a deeper look into who you are as a man ❤

I appreciate your testimony, it was very insightful, I'm a christian and I resonate with some things that you said especially about things in your life becoming worse you became a christian, its quite common it happened to me aswell, Jesus actually said this will happen to some new believers because the devil knows you're not mature yet so he will try get you at early stages of your faith to get you to leave the faith, read the the parable of the sower in Matthew 13 (I know you said you dont believe in the bible but it will only take about 5mins to read, whats the worst that can happen lol). Also you mentioned about the stress of the serving God and following his rules, I'm not surprised, the bible says its impossible to serve God without having the holy spirit. You said that you're now kind of agnostic so I will just say this, God is an actual person so you need to view him that way and speak to him as a person, if you are struggling to believe in the things written in the bible then just say that to him, it doesn't need to be some long drawn out prayer, he created you and knows what it will take for you to believe in him, he will hear you if you are sincere, he really will. One last thing if you haven't stopped reading by now lol, you said you're now living the most peaceful life you've ever lived since leaving 'Christianity', Jesus said this in Mark 8:36-38 'For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?'

Thanks for sharing all this. Much of it is familiar to me as well. Where I'm at now is to realize that "Woke" isn't the only word/concept that's been misappropriated. The term/concept 'Christianity' has been misappropriated now for centuries by christless religion that looks nothing like Jesus. Now, I'm just starting to discover why Christ's news was once termed "Good News,' and the key - for me at least - is the concept of unrelenting Grace!

He, dubblup, doubles down by giving ❤️to those that agree with him. So, my guess as a boy he was raised right, but now he’s turned his back on God. By showing how he’s pleased to see other likeminded people supporting his efforts, he’s sealed their fate too. Thank you for your kindness in sharing your personal life with us. That takes courage and I appreciate you. I had a similar experience when I " accepted Jesus" My life went straight to hell, and I had no idea why. If had known that was gonna happen, I would never have come forward to receive Jesus. I don't identify as a Christian. God is my father and Jesus is my rabbi. I'd say I'm a Chris-Jew. I might be the only one. One problem we face is that once we proclaim our faith we WILL be attacked by the demon platoon. If we don't know where to turn for help, we can be destroyed. I did not know where to get help and it felt like I was getting hit by a car twice a week. I've always been the type to ask questions. At the time, I didn't know church people HATE people who ask questions. I did not know we are supposed to pretend to know everything and keep your mouth shut. I would be chastised for asking questions. One day I got blasted hard because I kept asking " why do we have love our enemies? As I was going home I was very angry and hurt. Then it hit me and I smiled. They hate me for asking questions because they don't know the answer either. That was 25 years ago and I haven't been to a church since. I pursued knowing Jesus on my own. It's been a slow grind but the last 3 years the Holy Spirit helped to know and understand things that I didn't know existed. I want you to know that I do love you and I so appreciate your candidness. I just wanna say what passes for Christianity in America is nonsense. Just know almost none of them accurately represent God. Most of what they believe is wrong and I will debate any of them any time any place any where. My heart goes out to any of you who are deconstucting because I know what you wanna separate yourselves from are the other Christians. This may sound arrogant to some, but I really mean this. On behalf of God my Father and Jesus my rabbi I apologize to you for what you've been put through. May I share a scipture from Ezekiel. The word of God came to Ezekiel and he said Zeke ya know I love you but tomorrow I must cause your wife to die. WHY? Because we must teach the Jews a lesson. Let one of their wives die then. Many Jews here in Babylon have family back in Israel and I am going start causing their people in Israel to start dying off because they will not listen to me. But they won't know it. So, Zeke when your wife dies I want you to go about your day as if nothing happened. If they ask you about it just say "no comment" The next day I awoke to find my wife had died. But the rest of the day I DID AS I WAS TOLD. My friend that's an example of a man who believes in God. The apostates you encounter in America are as phonie as a 7 dollar bill. It aint over til the fat lady sings. I respect your decision but please know you are welcome back with arms wide open any time you want. May the Lord bless every step you ever take❤

Have you seen the movie, The Matrix? Here’s a great interpretation in cliff notes that has helped me.
I don’t like the term religion and I have studied and been a part of other faiths, particularly the Bahai faith. Very interesting but, for me, I come back to Christianity. What I believe is faiths are more alike than different and so they divided us by and called them religions. And what I also believe is that we will find out soon that we misunderstood because despite these religions being ancient, they wanted us divided in so many ways! So many lies about history so we wouldn’t become one and all be connected. It’s also about 3D to 5d and everything is energy. They altered energy so we would stay dumbed down. God made nature that has healing energy.

Christianity is confusing I agree with certain concepts like man in the clouds etc however, We suffer. It doesn't say that we would always have peace. I understand you want to define yourself and have 'peace'. But let's be real we won't always feel peace even as Christians. Ask yourself this... what positive lifestyle changes did you have when you came to Christ? If you felt delivered from certain things then that meant a change (repentance must have happened). I have had doubts but when I weigh up everything else in this world and how I was before it makes my faith stronger. If you're looking for some miracles in Christianity or signs then don't be dismayed when your life is bad. That's part of faith. I work out 6 days a week, push my body to a limit, and do 'vanity' but I know these won't last. That's not depressing but just a way to live while we are on this earth. God bless

I have been an agnostic for 20 years and can say the opposite is true for me with finding more peace. Yes logic is needed in this world. But our faith is not of this world.

I understand what I've heard from you and how you and your wife came to this place of doubt and disbelief.....its not hard to see the picture here! What I am hearing you say repeatedly, time after time after time, is that you doubted or started to disbelieve in *"this religion"!* This sticks out so much like a 'sore thumb' in your testimony! You came to a place of no longer believing in a *religion*
....this is completely understandable because it is an error to "believe in a religion"!
The whole point and essence of Christian faith, is *believing and trusting in Christ* - not a religion that is built around him!
Secondly, the error is in thinking or expecting Christian faith or as you put it your "religion" to make your life better/improve it or even worse with Joel Osteen's 'gospel' to make you more prosperous financially. The gospels of the Bible, are nothing to do with 'improving your life or lifestyle' or making everything in this world perfect for you! This kind of gospel is a false gospel that is being peddled by certain ministries, but it is not the gospel of Jesus Christ in the Bible.
With the above errors that you seem to have taken on, this perfectly explains your departure from 'religion',.....but it is not the faith of the gospel of Christ in the Bible.

I hear you. I didn’t get too much into it in the video, but the idea of following Jesus Christ is lost on me. As I began dissecting my thoughts, blindly following the words in the bible as absolute truth didn’t sit right with me. Even the idea of Jesus existing is something I’m not totally sure of. Still shaping my understanding of God to be honest. Thanks for watching and I definitely appreciate your input.

@@MrDubblup I understand. Life is definitely a journey, but there are actually many ways of looking at this whole subject, including acknowledging the problem of evil, which is a serious problem for any atheist!
I didn't believe in God, until I was 24 (decades ago now!). I responded to the preaching of the gospel in a church I was invited to. I expected nothing and was blasse about it. I was led to pray and then asked how do you feel? I said 'I'm fine thanks!' Then I tried to pray in my own words. It was at this point that I suddenly became aware of a tremendous power above my head to the right and I reached my hand up.... A tremendous power came in through my head down through my chest and into my stomach and took something out and went out again! It felt like a cloud had surrounded me, which I couldn't understand. I began to tremble and call out 'Father', with recognising that God was right there with me! .....it seemed like the hand on the clock had just stopped and time was non existent!
I was on my knees and floods of peace were rolling into me. The next thing I became aware of was someone tapping me on the shoulder telling me I have to go because they wanted to lock up the church building!
I stood up and was completely dazed....I felt full of love, joy and peace, ....I wanted to run and run! I felt a great love for people I didn't know from a different culture from me who were still in the church. I wanted to hug them! I felt a deep joy inside. When I went outside the sky looked bluer and the grass looked greener and the world looked beautiful.
That night, I said to myself, 'I'll be back to normal in the morning!' .....when morning came, I woke up full of peace, joy and love! Every day I thought this can't last and every morning it was more peace, love and joy!
I went to see my family and said: 'God's given me 3 gifts - love, joy and peace'. They said read Galatians 5:22, someone helped me find it and I nearly fell through the floor as I read the words: "the fruit of the spirit is love, joy and peace'! ....I thought, 'what?' ...this book is 2000 years old and its just told me what I've just received and experienced????

I see what you are submissive mentalities can lack personal benefit, its like becoming a doormat to society. I stay a doormat because it helps my mind to stay focused and my heart driven to stay connected to God. In heaven everyone is submissive. Even God helps those who need His help in heaven, with orders and with delegated attendance. This is what helps me stay focused. We are also more likely to succeed if we are submissive, and it also pleases God when someone is always willing to help others in need. Of course there is a line we cross if we become too submissive. There are spiritual and moral rights that we have in heaven and on earth as believers.

I don’t believe heaven or hell exist tbh so it’s hard to grasp a lot of what you’re saying. Morality exists outside of spirituality and it’s absolutely possible to be a “good human being” without any of it being tied to a particular belief system. Thanks again for watching and commenting!

@@MrDubblupJesus told it like it was. He came to make a way to be reconciled back to God. Because of our sin we are separated from God. We are born rebels. God haters. And it is all because of that sinful nature.
To be born again to is be born by the Spirit of God. Jesus was telling us that this is the one and only bridge to be restored to where God created you to be. And it is by His grace (unmerited favor) through faith in Christ alone is this at all possible. The reason you don't believe in any of it is because you would have be accountable to God for your sinful ways. And since Jesus stated that He was the light of the world and that whoever follows Him should not walk in darkness; it is this light that exposes the darkness of your sin.
And many will not approach the light of God's Word because it will expose their sinful deeds. There are all sorts of excuses that sinners have not to believe, but not one of them is justified. The wisdom of the Book of Proverbs shines through..."He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy." (Pr. 28:13)

And it doesn't really make sense for people to deny god just because they sin. The entire point of Christianity is that god forgives your sins. Denying god for that reason is just dumb and most Atheists/Agnostics know they do bad things they are just unconvinced of any particular god. @@Dock284 Incorrect. Everyone knows God exists, but they suppress the truth in their unrighteousness. (Romans 1:18) God forgives sin; but everyone must repent (forsake and abhor their sins) and totally trust Jesus Christ to save and rescue them from their sin. I share with many people on these professing atheist, the de-converted, and false convert channels. Whether some professed Christianity one time in their life or not. One thing is certain...they knew all about Jesus, the gospels, and the Word...BUT NEVER KNEW HIM.
Who did Jesus say to depart from Him? Those whom He never knew. (Luke 13:27) We live in a time where there is a great falling away from the truth. And Jesus even warned us that the love of many would grow cold.
(Matthew 24:12) And when Jesus taught about denying yourself, taking up your cross and following Him...
the crowds falling Him thinned out. And sadly, many of His disciples followed Him no more. (John 6:66)
That is why we must be ready for Jesus' return...."“Let your waist (belt of truth) be girded and your lamps burning; (filled with The Holy Spirit). (Luke 12:35)

If naturalism were true there simply never would have been anything. Jesus is still God in human flesh, still raised from true death. He turned a cruel Roman Cross into an Altar with eternal significance. You can appropriate Jesus atoning sacrifice for your sins through faith alone, there is no other way, no other sacrifice. Naturalism is also a religion, believed by blind faith for philosophical reasons. Again, if naturalism were true there simply never would have been anything.
