Always loved the movie but the opening credits blew me away when I first saw it. Kamen's chilling score and the picturesque visuals work together amazingly.
Agreed! This is one of my two favorite, chilling (scary and the temperature of the room seems to drop 10 to 20°F.) Stephen King movies, the other being Salem's Lot (1979). Michael Kamen's music is simultaneously sad, foreboding and the violins are like a razor blade. I bought THAT soundtrack. 👍👍
Love this score mesmerizing and fitting. I miss the films during this time period that opened with such creative visual graphics. Altered States comes to mind.
I love the one still/image with the dark figure in a long coat walking down the road. It’s subtle yet adding in another small way to the mystery and suspense of this brilliant film. Wonderful opening sequence.
That's not a man on the road, just a part of the title sequence. They add and remove shadows/areas from the title card to eventually display "The Dead Zone" and that's just one of the shadows eventually removed.
Still my favorite King horror adaptation. For once, they totally nailed the internal elements that make his storytelling so unique, perfectly capturing the sorrow and loss at the core of the novel, while bringing his characters to life better than just about anyone else ever has. I adore this film.
I saw this movie for the first time somewhere in the mid 1990's, when it came out from a finnish 🇫🇮 TV channel. It actually came so late, i recorded on a VHS tape and watched it the next day at my parents' former cabin. I may not have it on VHS anymore, but i still have it on DVD. One of the most brilliant thriller movies, David Cronenberg has ever directed. Also, just like this movie, i was born in 1983. A big retrospective like 👍 from Vantaa, Finland 🇫🇮. 😺👍
I love how the titles put several dark spots in place, just like what happens in the character's head - he's mentioning it clearly at one point in the movie. The score is stunningly haunting and beautiful, the locations are nothing short of amazing, and the credits do bring something to the mood and set the tone for the rest of the movie. That's how movies should be done. Kudos, Cronenberg.
Fun Fact: When composer Michael Kamen played this theme on his piano at his home in London, one of his neighbors asked him to stop playing because it was scaring him and his family.
I will try to watch this sometimes and see how long I can last without getting goosebumps. I don't think I've ever gotten farther than the first part of the "E" coming in on Brooke Adams' credit.
It isn't "uncronenberg" It's a story about life and death. Ultimately Johnny understands life and makes the right choice. He had to pay though. Fuck all the evangelicals that don't know or care about humanity.
Hi everybody, could anybody tell me where these magnificent pics have been shot ? Are they really from Maine ? for example, It would be so great to get more precisons about 1.43 and 1.50Thanks.
I feel the same way. They certainly look like NE, USA, or Canada north of, say, 42 degrees latitude. Some feel particularly Maine/NH/VT but could be from upstate NY or Ontario or elsewhere. It would make sense they would be authentic Maine, but who's to say? Someone out there recognizes one of these places for sure. We must make them talk--or find them and grab their hand.
You still there? They were shot in Canada in Niagara on the Lake. I agree they are very beautiful. I live in Massachusetts, and the landscape here is very similar.

And the title coming together

Such an underrated film. For some reason I like watching this in the winter, during a snowstorm. Very atmospheric. The film is also quite sad.
I agree, I'm reading the book in winter and it fits perfectly with the atmosphere that Stephen King created in the book!👌
JE Bro me too in the winter.
so do I. Right on, bro. I can't get enough from this old movie. Means so much to me.
I always enjoy watching during the autumn season.
greatest all-time opening credits sequence ever, and a jaw-dropping score to match.
Love this score mesmerizing and fitting. I miss the films during this time period that opened with such creative visual graphics. Altered States comes to mind.
Thanks for the upload. These opening credits are definitely among the best in movie history.
I love the one still/image with the dark figure in a long coat walking down the road. It’s subtle yet adding in another small way to the mystery and suspense of this brilliant film. Wonderful opening sequence.
That always stood out to me too.
Yes - the two guys on their motorcycles always intriqued me though. Always wondering what they were up too and if they are still alive...
Yasss!!!
It might be Randall Flagg.
That's not a man on the road, just a part of the title sequence. They add and remove shadows/areas from the title card to eventually display "The Dead Zone" and that's just one of the shadows eventually removed.
This is a classic. True cinematic magic. Will be a classic 100 years from now as well.
This intro inspired me to be a photographer years ago!!!

Best musical score of any Stephen King adaptation ever. Well maybe a tie with Shawshank Redemption. Yeah, definitely a tie.

😺👍
@Vincent M: This film was actually shot in Ontario, Canada. Specifically, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Stouffville (Johnny's school), Whitevale & Orono.
Thank you. Im gonna get that on google earth :-)
Cronenberg is Canadian so makes perfect sense
"Well, You are either in possession of a very new human ability, or a very old one."

"You knew! Didn't you?! ...didn't you?!!!"
Amazing film. My favorite of Kings adaptations. Credit sequence and music is perfect

The title sequence for Stranger Things is very reminiscent of this-both are from 1983 in a sense.
I feel at peace every time I watch this...
You can see how this influenced Stranger Things' chapter openings...
yep also The Terminator and Altered States
That music composer is the same as The Iron Giant (1999).
Actually you're right. He also composed the first X-Men film
‘She knows him,not scared……..she knows him!’
Cronenberg knows how to get you into the story and the late Michael Kamen
Colleen Dewhurst and George C. Scott of FIRE STARTER were married.
A fun little Stephen King fact for everyone.
It would be a tough draw between this and The Fly, but I belive this is Cronenburgs best work.
Concur that those are my two favorite Cronenberg films.
0:17 This is a title of the movie.
2:35 This is *THE* title of the movie.
0:17 Wasn't necessary IMO

it's worth it
This is the most un-Cronenberg movie David Cronenberg did but one of the best King adaptions in my opinion.
He only directed; it wasn't written by him, but it is in the vein of his own films.
It isn't "uncronenberg" It's a story about life and death. Ultimately Johnny understands life and makes the right choice. He had to pay though. Fuck all the evangelicals that don't know or care about humanity.

I too would love to know where these pictures were taken... I’ve had no luck so far in my quest!

Mainly Niagara on the Lake Ontario. All shot in Canada.
@@NormAppleton thanks for the answer

"The Dead Zone" appeared on "The ABC Movie of the Week" over the years.
