Love your cabin build videos. My son, with a tiny bit of help from me, built a cabin during COVID in my garden so that I could have an office and WFH. We bought the exact one you did and I thought your video is great. My brother is moving in soon as the company he worked for was closed. I'm really happy to be in a position to help him out 😁 Everything of the best for your travels 😊

Great series Jon. I came into to learn about your cabin build but I also appreciate the personal honest life story and the encouragement to try things instead of being in fear of making mistakes,. Good on you. Gareth

Thanks for this series Jon. Watched for the cabin build but watched the final upload as well. I think you're braver than you think. I'm in my 50's and I meet so many people your age who are just unhappy and even angry with their lives and they are the ones who just didn't have the courage to do what they dreamed of and just get stuck in the grind of unfulfilling work and the grid of a daily existence. The only regret you'll have is you didn't do it earlier

I got forced into self-employment in 1994 when I was 30 years old. I had a good job in finance but it was very specialised and my employer became insolvent. I couldn't find another job as my experience was too specific to that job so I turned my hobby (Piano & furniture repair and restoration) into a business. I never made a fortune but I've always done pretty well each year and own a large house with no mortgage on it. However, the job satisfaction of earning your own money is immense in my experience. I also found that work doesn't feel like work. I've travelled all over the UK delivering to customers (great fun) and also had the money and the spare time to travel around the world quite a bit. Jon, you must live in the same area as me. That's my local beach too! My cabin is being delivered on 28th Feb. concrete base already done.

Great Vid, thanks. My log cabin is on order. It's my new art studio. I've been fortunate to retire earlyish from the emergency services at 55. The expectation from others that I need to get another 'traditional' job is surprising. Many people support me including my wife and girls but there is a lot of resistance from unexpected quarters ( extended family)! You have to cut out the background noise and negativity and crack on. It helps if you have a plan. Good luck with everything you do.

Hi Jon, I enjoyed watching and hearing about your journey. I hope all is well with you. I actually stumbled across your video cos I was looking at how to repair a cabin that I have inherited. I wonder if you could help me out as you built yours.
I need to replace a couple of the lower panels as they have rotten over time probably due to standing water or rain splashing back. Do you think that they can be easily changed? I'm hoping that I can jack up the side of the shed and remove the rotten panels and replace with new. You reckon that would work?? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Salv

    • @lifeofjonboy
      @lifeofjonboy  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi Salv! I'm really glad you enjoyed following my journey, and I appreciate you reaching out for advice. Absolutely, replacing the lower panels is a doable task. Here's a quick guide and how I would go about it:
      > Assess the Damage: Identify the extent of the rot and ensure it hasn't affected the structural integrity.
      > Jack Up the Shed: Your idea to jack up the shed is solid. This will provide the necessary space to remove and replace the panels.
      > Secure the Structure: Ensure the shed is securely propped up before working on the panels.
      > Remove Rotten Panels: Carefully remove the damaged panels, taking note of how they are attached for easier reinstallation.
      > Replace with New Panels: Use weather-resistant materials for the replacement. Seal and paint them to protect against future issues.
      > Reinstall Panels: Place the new panels securely, following the previous attachment method.
      > Inspect and Maintain: Regularly check for any signs of water damage and address them promptly.
Remember to prioritize safety during the process. I hope this helps, and best of luck with your cabin repair! Feel free to ask if you have more questions. 🛠️🏡

Hi Jon, thanks for the video, really helpful. Is the cabin used all year round, and is it warm enough when it gets really cold outside? I know you have floor and roof insulation, would you have wall insulation given the choice? And lastly what type of heater do you use? Thanks

Hello. New to your videos. Really appreciated the honesty and the genuineness of your video's.
I am looking to buy one of these to work from. Can you be honest and comment on if you would reccomened dunster? Also did you live in it during winter? Was it warm?

Hiya mate I’ve watched your cabin build because we are just going to order ours ( Dunster Lantera ) 👍 question for you what heating do you have for the winter and is it nice and warm ? Thanks mate I’ve enjoyed your build and have subscribed to your channel

Hi Jon, I am just about to order a log cabin, almost certainly from Dunster, so I found your videos most helpful. I do have a question. Like you, I was planning on ordering the floor and roof insulation myself to save costs but was thinking I'd need to buy special roof boards with insulation attached, but it looks like you just used the same insulation boards for the floor and ceiling by placing them between the inside ceiling and the roof boards supplied with the cabin? Is that correct?

Great series of videos Jon. I came across your vids after considering buying a dunster house cabin. I’m trying to save money and would rather not have to get a purpose built garden office. Have you found that your cabin is warm enough during the winter to be able to work? Thanks for any advice you can give me.

    • @malcolmevans7126

@@lifeofjonboy thanks for your reply Jon, I have decided to get a garden office from dunster still. They seem great value compared to other companies. A little bit more than the log cabin, and it was a coin flip in the end. Thanks
