I'm constantly shifting towards building a garden room and buying a kit, my mind changes all the time... i'm (now) probably coming down on the side of constructing it myself just so i can plan it perfectly to fit with the plans on the rest of our garden. When fitting the insulation on the roof, do the nails through the OSB board go all the way through the insulation and into the original roof boards? I.e around 50/60mm in length? What about the clout nails holding down the felt ?

    Had nothing but issues with mine leaking out the bottom corner bearers and damp in the corners. I have siliconed all the outside corners but it's still getting in around the corners and pooling on the concrete base which would be under the fitted floor which I have not done yet due to this. For the life of me I cannot figure out where it is getting in.

    Hi Jon. We are expecting our Rhine cabin next week and I’m about to buy the insulation. You’ve mentioned the insulation you used was 25mm but in a reply to another comment, you mentioned it was 50mm? Are you able to confirm this please? I hope you are well. I’ve loved your series of vids! 👌🏼

      Hey there! Thanks so much for tuning in and following the series! I appreciate your support.
      Apologies for any confusion in my previous responses. You're correct; I used 50mm insulation for my Rhine cabin. It provides better insulation, especially if you're planning to use it in various weather conditions. I hope you enjoy the process of setting up your Rhine cabin, and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Best of luck, and I hope it turns out just the way you envision! 👍🏼

    Hi Jon, let me start by saying really enjoyed watching this series of videos and the final Q&A was really helpful. I'm looking to do a garden office on a budget so considering doing the inslulation myself like you did. I'm not generally a DIY'er, so this may be a stupid question, but is there a reason that you didn't/couldn't insulate the walls as well as the roof and floor? I was thinking you might be able to insulate and then plasterboard the inside, but I guess you'd be losing out on a fair bit of space.

    Sorry but I have to question this issue about the door handles and the screws on the wrong side. I have exactly the same cabin, it arrived yesterday and the first thing I did was look at the door handles and yes they can be rotated either way, as they always can or you'd have to buy specific left or right sets (on some this is the case). If you leave the screws on the outside it is a simple matter to unscrew, pull off the handle and snap the protruding lock to gain access. BTW I enjoy your videos and that was a lot of material they delivered and I had to move on my own to the back garden. The delivery tracking was none existent but the delivery guys were friendly and helpful. Quality of the timber looks excellent too.

    Great information in all three videos - thank you. I have just taken delivery of the same cabin as yours. I am not sure I understand the roof correctly though. If I understand correctly I need to nail the felt down? In my mind that's going to create leak points as the nails will be through the felt and waterproof membrane, potentially creating a leak point. Did I miss something? Many thanks for any guidance you have.

    Really enjoyed watching your videos on your build. I have just had planning permission approved (required due to living in a listed property) to build my own Dunster House cabin which will be a garden room / garden office, it's one of the corner cabins with diagonally positioned doors on one corner. I'm intending to build it myself which I'm a bit nervous about because I won't have much help. Do you think you could have built it by yourself at a push if your Dad hadn't been able to help? Also, you used a concrete base for your cabin, did you ever consider using the plastic grid solution that Dunster House recommend, if not why not?

    Jon, really enjoyed your videos especially as I am about to embark on similar project, question about your concrete base, how was it made up ? Assume you had a DPM in construction and on your latest video it appears like you have brought it up the edges and sealed it to the top of the concrete. Is this correct ? how did you do that ?

    Hi John, with regards to the floor, as an alternative to leaving it bare we are thinking about putting something over the top for cosmetic purposes as opposed to strengthening it. Would you know if a cheap laminate flooring is recommended or should I opt for an engineered hardwood flooring or vinyl tiles? The cabin is in full sun from March to November, then sees little sun over the winter months.

    Hi, what wood paints/varnishes do you recommend for the inside walls and floors or have you left the inside bare wood?

    • @taichpaul
      @taichpaul 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you use the clear treatment then you will need to top coat that with a coloured UV protecting layer you are better off using a tinted version that will includes UV protection. I am a retired professional decorator. On the inside you can use whatever you like even emulsion paint, although I'd prime it first to get a good adhesion.

    • @portcask
      @portcask 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@taichpaul Hi Paul, I see loads of cabins painted inside in different colours and maybe we will add a splash of colour to ours. Are emulsion paints more commonly used inside over a wood shaded paint? After all the hard work that went into preparation and build I am a bit wary of using an emulsion paint. We are in two minds, leave the walls bare or give them some light colour.

    • @portcask
      @portcask 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lifeofjonboy Hi John, my neighbour also recommended using the Barrettine wood protector but I ended up using two coats of the Barrettine wood preserver with a top coat of the Barrettine log cabin oil over the top on the outside. The wood protector for the inside seems a good choice as an alternative to emulsion, just wary of messing the inside up with a colour I can't get rid off! In hindsight, the wood protector for the outside would have cost half the price of the other two products I purchased!

    • @taichpaul
      @taichpaul 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@portcask I'm not going to paint mine inside as I will be using it as a workshop. However, if I did I would start by knotting all the knots with a white knotting from Zinsser, then a good quality wood primer and then a good quality trade water based eggshell. The primer will help give the wood an even absorption and help the top two coats to adhere. Alternatively you could go all oil based but you'd feel pretty sick by the end of it and even when finished it'll take a good two weeks too cure (no more smell). Also oil based paints will yellow over time due to lack of light. I'd stick to water based materials inside. Go to your local decorators merchant and ask for advice, they will help you. Hope that helps.
