Carlos Alcaraz recently discussed his complex relationship with Novak Djokovic, highlighting the balance between their intense rivalry and strong off-court friendship. Both players are competing in the 2024 US Open men's singles event and have advanced to the second round, with Djokovic defeating Radu Albot 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 and Alcaraz overcoming Li Tu 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Alcaraz acknowledged the high level of their on-court battles, stating, “We have a good rivalry. Every time that we step on the court, we play really high tennis. Every time that we faced each other, it has been a really good and intense match.” He emphasized their strong friendship outside of the competitive arena, noting, “We talk a lot in the lockers every time that we see each other around. With his team as well.”
However, Alcaraz also made it clear that the camaraderie pauses when they compete, explaining, “Once we step on the court, there are no friends here on tour.” Despite this, he maintained a positive view of their relationship, adding, “After the court, I have a really good relationship with a lot of players, and one of them is Novak.”
