Trekyards EP91 - USS Hammer (fan design)

    USS Hammer. NCC 90467 designed by myself.
    The idea of this ship ship started with the action of the nacelles rotating so to deploy the weapons arms as well as conceal the nacelles from any damage. The rest of the ship was built around it.
    So for warp and general flight the nacelles are in the deployed position ( as seen here ). When under fire the nacelles rotate around a central pivot point and the warp plasma cannons are revealed.
    The warp flow is redirected from the nacelles to power the cannons to produce a powerful blast.
    She is loosely a combination of technological advances from USS Voyager and the USS Defiant and her size is slightly smaller than Voyager.
    She has a slimline design with a detachable Bridge module.
    Thanks
    Don Meiklejohn

    When I saw the thumb nail the image screamed shuttle to me.
    Well this is a better next gen Defiant than I had planned, I like the design and the attack wing mode. Federation's own Bird of Prey.
    I too would love to see this thing fly and in action. USS HAMMER vs USS DEFIANT, Fight! 🙌

    Looks like the entire wing pylons along with the nacelles can lift up similar to Voyager.
    And in case you missed it, this ship seems to have both on the top as bottom side (front side) 4 torpedo launchers, not just 4 on the bottom side. So this may be a torpedo ship which could explain why there are so few phaser strips.

  • @LordCakeskull
    @LordCakeskull 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    In combat mode the nacelles swing down and under, keeping them close and protected. This also brings the plasma cannons up and out, to firing position.
    The nacelle/cannon modules pivot at roughly their halfway point. Not at the inboard end.

    I think the nacelles roll all the way under exposing the weapon, I would like to see it rendered with them exposed

    I like it. Throw it into the same box the Defiant lives in and it works. Maybe as an escort or a similar design function. I do agree with the missed phaser strip statement. One along each side would be a good addition to the design.

    Interesting looking ship! I think it does look Starfleet, but a radical idea.
    I like the interior-facing windows: like the Defiant and the Sovereign (underneath in both cases). Not sure a Phaser array is needed there as there are arrays that can be seen and would have covering firing arcs and it would possibly impact the rooms those lights infer.
    I love that underside view, that looks fantastic! Again with the Phasers? More arrays does not mean more Phaser power, it just means more hardpoints to draw line-of sight from.
    I love the way the nacelles pivot round, that is cool and protects the nacelles in combat. Looking back at the dorsal render, there are escape pods either side of those 'doors' too.

    • @CubanWriter
      @CubanWriter 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have always been of the opinion that phaser emitters in an array contribute energy to the discharge and pass it to their neighbor until the point of discharge. If I am correct, larger strips do in fact improve output.

    • @berthulf
      @berthulf 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd never considered that idea before and it has merit, but certainly, on the topside at least, the windows imply there are rooms there and all previous 'official' schematics sow the emitter arrays to have larger internal than external volume... the two would not be able to share the same space (though I'd be happy to exchange rooms for phasers).

    I like the design a lot. I agree the hole is a bit weird but from a visual aspect it doesn’t look bad at all so even if it’s simply to make the ship look different/more aggressive it doesn’t bother me just from a visual aspect.
    Practical wise I think it would make sense that it’s a docking birth for a additional auxiliary craft but they should have something that fills it in too.
    Overall though I really like this ship

    I give props to the designer, good job. however the design leaves a tactical disadvantage . I'm not talking about phaser strips. by occluding the plasma emitters and by using power for warp drive it eliminates the possibility of fireing the plasma emitters during warp flight. BTW fireing phasers at warp is possible if the velocity is matched, like in voyager vs equinox.

    USS Defiant being on one end of the spectrum which officially is classified as an 'escort vessel' and the Oberth class which is a 'Scout /science' vessel. To quote Captain Spock in 'The undiscovered country' "Starfleet's mission has always been one of peace". But in this fictional universe that's not always been the case. Although Starfleet can be seen as a Humanitarian armada it has a military role as the primary agency that defends the Federation.

    In really looking at it, it reminds me of a Jem'Hedar attack vessel but flipped. Great design though. However, the ship doesnt look like it can defend itself well if it was attacked directly from port or starboard, other than the fact that it maybe highly maneuverable and can bank on a dime.

    This ship is beautiful, and I wish I had half the talent of these ship designers. But if I had to critique anything, it would be the 'tac mode' vs 'cruise mode' thing that happens with the nacelles. I understand moving the nacelles to optimize warp travel, but I would not want there to be any mode where weapons are obscured. God forbid something damaged the articulation system, the main weapons of the vessel would be taken out of action.

    • @markplott4820
      @markplott4820 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +CubanWriter agree, I see the Equniox and Defiant more practical than voyager. I know Starfleet has good maintenance but eventually all articulation systems will fail or improperly operate at some time.

      I know, I too wish had their talent. To build, draw, design ships in 3-D, in high school all my extracurricular class were Art classes to help me learn to draw 3 dimensional objects, but...NOOOOOOPE! My art teacher only taught, wanted to reach was *in feminine voice* "I'm teaching you abstract and blah blah blah blah art, not to teach you to draw in Anime, or in 3-D art." she claimed to have gone through college or some cheap tech school to teach and learn art, I said BS to her because she didn't teach me anything that was the description of those "Art" classes.

    • @CubanWriter
      @CubanWriter 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +James Hook I agree that calling Starfleet non-military is mostly Federation propaganda. In fact, it seems to me that the Federation exists under a mostly benign police state, where Starfleet is an everpresent peacekeeping force that provides multiple state-sponsored services (including territorial expansion via colonization.)

      Hmm. I don't know. The Feds can be insidious at times. Their behavior with the Maquis was abominable, for instance. In the context of surrounding regimes, I think it qualifies as comparatively benign. Though of course the 'extreme example' governments of Trek make it easy for the Feds to look good in comparison.

    I gotta say I'm not a big fan of the rotation, it seems like a Star Wars gimmick. There are too many Star Wars ships that have wings and other parts of the ship move for no other reason than "it looks cool". I'm fine with ships like the x wing or the b wing, those gimmicks make some sense. But the one recent ship(the name escapes me at the moment) that has a huge wing that rotates from the top of the ship for landing to the bottom for flight just never made any sense to me. Just why bother designing something so intricate when something simpler will do. I like the overall design though, if the saucer section took some shapes of the intrepid and Prometheus class ships it would look more federation to me.
