    Oh. Yes. The Constellation class! This is one of my favorite Starfleet ship designs, and its a shame how little screen time it got. I really wish they would do a movie, or a series taking place sometime between the 2290s and the 2350s, after The Undiscovered Country, and before TNG. Some of my favorite ship designs, like the Constellation class, and the Ambassador class were at the peak of their service during those years, and they used the blue and green LCARS displays (like the one you guys used in this video), which is my favorite. I know a lot of my fellow trekkies would consider this akin to blasphemy, but personally I think the Ambassador class looks so much better than the Galaxy class, and the blue and green LCARS looks so much better than the purple, pink, orange, and yellow design on later Starfleet ships. So needless to say I would really love a series, or a movie like a prequel type thing with young Picard commanding the Stargazer, or else following the exploits of the Enterprise C, culminating with its destruction at Narendra III. It would be awesome to see Picard in his younger days, as well as the Stargazer when she was still in service, and looking clean and pristine, and there's also the Federation-Cardassian wars in the 2340s and 2350s that would make for some really great stories because the Cardassians are a most worthy adversary. Thanks for doing this one, guys! Live long, and prosper!

    Great Ep 1. "The Battle" always made me want to see a mini-series of Picard's earlier adventures on the Stargazer. I always thought this was a cool design. Good job, guys!

      I agree. When I first saw this ship, i fell in love with it. I was like "that's a beautiful ship". Awesome also. I had to have it. And now I do, from Eaglemoss collections. Love their line of ships. Very well crafted and detailed.

    The Constellation, especially with all the line-interrupting bulges and battle damage, looks like a musty old war horse of a ship. The extra nacelles, dual impulse hard points, and extra saucer thickness also add to the mystique, for me. I think they did an excellent job crafting this ship's specific lore, because it looks and reads like a failed experiment, another attempt by humanity to throw "more power!" at a problem as a means of overcoming it. The lore also reminds me of real-life otherwise failed military machines that were meant to tackle a big problem, but ended up far too expensive, poorly run, and ill-conceived, and were re-purposed into some modicum of usefulness with new tech bolted on.
    From some angles it looks menacing and more war-like than other Federation ships, and from other angles, it looks ungainly.

  • @franksmedley8619
    @franksmedley8619 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The Constellation and Cheyanne classes were always my favorites, for many reasons. Four nacelles and improved warp cores allow for better, 'thicker' shields, as well as better overall speed and power. Excess power could be routed to other systems, and in combat, that alone would be worth the cost of the additional nacelles. Since one could have shields fully charged, and fire both phasers and torpedoes, AND be traveling at maximum warp, all at the same time. Add in the added maneuverability given by the doubled impulse engines, and one has a hard-hitting, hard to kill, fast, maneuverable ship that can take on enemies far larger than itself.
    Just a few thoughts,
    Speaking Frank-ly

  • @tonyromasco1735
    @tonyromasco1735 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You would think that the extra nacelles would give them greater ability to tailor their warp field. Great for when you need to tow a ship!

    Great episode, guys! I'm looking forward to part 2. Any show that been around as long as Star Trek leaves a lot of loose threads, and the Constellation Class certainly ranks high among them. There are so many possibilities for this ship with all it's shuttle bays, but the writers never saw fit to explore those possibilities. Although there's no canon to support it, I always thought that this class of ship would be good for setting up mining colonies, or listening posts along the Neutral Zone.
    Speaking of loose threads, that might be a good Top Ten topic: Things we only saw in one episode, that we'd love to see again and learn more about.

    Great episode as always! I love the TMP look and the quad-nacelles. When you start looking closely at it, I can understand some criticism it gets for a kit-bashy look, namely the obvious pylon halves glued to the aft of the primary hull, that serves no purpose other than to fill space. But the overall design of the Constellations is pretty cool. I'd love to see a Constellation refit with Excelsior parts. Or better yet, a Galaxy class version.

    It's interesting with the torpedo tubes - there is a plate of some sort in front of them in its appearances, so it made me wonder if they really did have that many launchers, or if those structures are actually something else that just look like constitution class launchers

      Well but there are lots of breaks, leaning against the counter, and bathroom breaks in there of course. I worked in retail for years and of course you can find a place to sit down in-between customers.
      A lot of stock rooms have basically been turned into little break rooms, if you're lucky someone even have a little Nook that you can lay down in behind some boxes and there's always something back there depending on who's the manager that night, you might have some food or a couple of cocktails until you hear somebody pushing paging someone's your department. Sorry I was taking a nap in the breakroom how can I help you? LOL

    US Navy bridges have a lot of crew standing at their station. That said, those ships don't get tossed around like starships. Yesterday's Enterprise has a shot of Riker dieing when he's tossed around the bridge and breaks his neck.

  • @HarperStl

    Again, I think the more durable/combat focused design of the Constellation means the multiple nacelles could also be there for combat survivability. A Klingon or Romulan ship knocks out a nacelle, no problem. Just redirect all your warp power to whichever set is still active to create a stable warp field.

  • @timothypage252

      if I were to design s bridge with standing stations. I always thought an acceptable refit for the constellation class would be a deletion of its undersized twin port and starboard shuttle bays, converting them into additional deuterium storage tanks to improve the classes overall operational range, she was a bit of a fuel hog after all, and small cargo bays. Expand the volume of the aft most shuttle bays by some 10-15% to compensate for the loss of the p/s bays and accept somewhat newer shuttlecraft designs such as the Type 6 and 7 as seen in TNG. The most extensive portions of the refit would involve a complete replacement of the ship dated eps conduits and relays to maximize energy efficiency and distribution, this is critical for the second part, deletion of the main bow shuttle bay and replacement with a small dedicated navigational deflector/focused long range sensor array which is flanked on both sides by modified Miranda class heavy phaser emitters with a decent amount of firing arc on both the x and y axis, to further emphasis the classes favored tactic of charging in quick to target area or formation at warp, lay down a heavy barrage of torpedo and phaser fire, come about, warp away for distance and attack the target area or formation from a different direction.

  • @joelm33
    @joelm33 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    14:39 What do you mean? Even the the pre-refit constitution class star ships had aft torpedoes, as seen in the episode "In a mirror darkly part 2"

    And STO calls it a "heavy cruiser".

  • @DarinRWagner
    @DarinRWagner 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In this video, Captain Foley mentions that it doesn't seem "fair" or "productive" for a crewman to not have a chair for their watch on the bridge. I'd like to point out that there are many stations on US Naval ships that don't have chairs. On my old submarine, the Fire Control, fathometer and Navigation stations had no chairs. Watches are 6 hours long on a submarine and if a Starfleet vessel has a 4-shift rotation then so are theirs. It's not far-fetched that some stations on a starship bridge would not have chairs. As for the rather spartan bridge of the Stargazer, I think that's part of its charm. It just makes the Enterprise D's bridge look all the more luxurious by comparison.

    One thing about the four nacelle configuration, and this was meant to address the underpower issue, Is that 1 pair of engines would be used and the other pair would be offline until the active pair needed to be taken offline for maintenance.

    I always thought the Stargazer was the ugliest ship, but the TOS version, seen at 7:00 and again at 9:30, is possibly my favorite design ever, even more so than the Constitution and/or Federation class vessels. I can imagine it as a battleship, well scaled up and very powerful, making full use of 4 drives.

    A note on standing on the job;
    At my current job the employer has provided motorized desks that can raise our consoles to standing height, and there is a lot of encouragement to do this for several hours at a time because standing is considerably more healthy than sitting for the entire day. I usually remain standing most of the 12-hour shift, really only sitting to eat.
    So perhaps the standing positions on the bridge of the Constellation class were designed with that in mind.

    I am warming up to this design. I prefer it to the Movie era Cheetah class fast destroyer. however I think its too underarmed to be classified as a battleship, perhaps as a fighting frigate or a Crusier but not a heavy cruiser like enterprise, perhaps a heavy destroyer. I like the versatility . Great Job Stuart and Samuel.

    Good job, guys! A lot of fanon in here, but that's okay for a ship that doesn't have a lot of established, canonical history. My compliments on a well-put-together vid! Something I want to add about aft torpedoes: I don't personally have a problem with the lack of aft weapons on smaller ships like the Constellation. This mainly comes from my submarine experience. Modern American submarines have between four-to-eight forward torpedo tubes and no aft-facing weapons. I just figure if the ship is small and maneuverable, aft weapons aren't as critical.

    It always annoyed me that in the TNG episode where Picard is mind controlled into re-fighting his battle on the Stargazer with the Enterprise D that the crew have to try and find which ship is the real one. If you know about the Picard manover you KNOW which one is the real one, it HAS TO BE the one closer to you, that's the only way it can work. You don't need some special sensor sweep to tell you which one is real.

      Yes. Memory Alpha is a huge reference for us (obviously). But it's only one of many sources we use. Combining all of the various sources together into one cohesive episode can sometimes be challenging. Occasionally direct quotes from various sources are used to ensure accuracy as well as mere convenance.

    I'm surprised that, in neither this video nor part 2, the lack of a visible navigational dish was mentioned. TBH, it bothers me a lot when I can't see a deflector, since the deflector is needed to travel faster than light. Eventually I found some schematics telling me the two domes on the ventral fore were dual deflector emitters, which calmed me down...

  • @DeathBYDesign666

    It has no deflector, though I think maybe the addition of two additional nacelles might compensate for it somehow. Just a guess!

      @markplott4820 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Davide Gagliardi deflectors come in a veriety of shapes and sizes, most common are the dish type. however on Miranda class there is no dish per say. there are however small devices port and starboard on the Dorsal side of the saucer, faceing foreward. on the Stargazer the deflection equipment is spread out along the foreward hull, and uses enhanced deflector grids to deflect oncoming debris.

    Sources aside, I don't see this as being contemporary of the Enterprise refit. I had personally figured that the revised warp factor calculations came into being during the Ambassador-class era, aka the beginning of the TNG design aesthetic, and that four old-style (Wrath of Khan era) nacelles were needed to match the performance of TNG nacelles. Yes Constellations are old, but not THAT old!

    I was going to ask, though I see someone beat me to it, where the navigational deflector dish is on this ship. I see the captain has tried his best to offer an answer but in the real world (of building the model) it does look like it has been forgotten about, given the prominence it has on every other star fleet ship? Ps. Is it ever explained a) why Picard was captain of this one ship for so long, and b) what he was doing in the rather long gap between abandoning the Stargazer and taking command of the Enterprise?

    are the Federation warp capabilities in general (not just to the constellation class, but to all federation starships) inferior to other races? it just seems that the federation has the biggest engines/warp nacelles and always get overtaken by the enemy with smaller engines.

    • @shawn2780
      @shawn2780 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Joshua Brown I think making a fast ship is one thing but making a fast ship that can also operate efficiently and safely for years or even decades without a major refurbishment is another. The Romulans for example have nearly limitless power with their quantum singularity drives, but they're inherently dangerous from the first moment they're powered up (you can't power down the core.. ever!). As said in this video, they had to install power limiters into these ships to prevent them from shaking themselves apart. Do other races put so much focus into such things? Can you imagine a Safety Officer in a Klingon Engineering section? heh

    • @TheCastellan

    • @Ryeguy123a

    • @shawn2780
      @shawn2780 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheCastellan Oh absolutely. I would argue that most of these advanced races would see the wisdom of joining the Federation and thus work to enhance it- but I'm sure that there's many many races that aren't interested in joining anyone that are leaps and bounds ahead.

      +power543 if you're being really nit picky (and this is Trekyards, of course we are) the top ones aren't actually warp nacelles but sustainers. the top section isn't warp capable by itself, but the nacelles help sustain the warp field generated prior to a warp speed seperation. somewhat like the Galaxy class or a photon torpedo, though presumably for longer
