My Bolens by MTD w/15.5 Briggs & Stratton needs its rebuild, I'm bringing it to you guys. I have rear end that slips in the lower (1-3) speed selector. Im not sure if its just the belt or if the driveline needs to be replaced or rebuilt. My dad gave me this tractor after he did all kinds of work to the deck. New blades, belts, pulleys, and I'll never het rid of it. My dad died 10 days after he gave it to me. So you guys are gonna be the ones to make her like new again. Your Channel is great and i love how you guys know what your doing. I'm looking forward to the day I bring it up there. Ill be driving up from Florida. Later Guys.

The company who picks up your used oil & oil filters probably also has a anti-freeze & absorbent recycling program or knows who does locally. I worked for one that did.
I believe I would have tried to collect most of that anti-freeze neatly, as opposed to getting it mixed in with the used oil & all over the floor.
The reason for numbering or marking internal engine parts is because they are worn to their respective mating surfaces. Probably not so critical on a mower engine.
Other than that, a good tutorial on how to replace the cam on a cow a sockie engine on a JD mower.

This reminds me of watching," Untold Stories of the E.R." Sometimes when we get the bill our frustration will be so high that we sometimes forget the hard work, and years of study guys like this put in so as to gain the knowledge, and skill level required in their professions. It's not very often that guys like this get to actually relax and let their hair down, they have to keep their mind engaged on the current challenge . The risk is just too great for them to ever laugh and interact with their peers. Their calling is higher than just a paycheck.
I wish they had professionals like this working in the Veterans Administration Hospitals.

Taryl, I commented on another video a few days ago to a guy that was working on something that in no way would get his hands or fingers dirty, yet he was wearing those cheap nitrile gloves. He had on large ones with his small hands. So, you work on these dirty, greasy, grimy small engines with bare hands. What a man! Hope you get to finish the Palimino!

Some camshaft lobes have a little extra 'hump' on them (exhaust lobe) that relieves compression at partial piston compression stroke, for ease in starting, and NO valve lash adjustment should be made at that point. BUT if engine is put at TDC comp stroke (both valves closed) you needn't worry about that comp. release feature on some engines. I'm sure Taryl knows this, as he is very smart!

I trust just about everything I see in your vids Darryl. Love the detail so tyvm for that.. Used this vid to help with all the powertrain work I completed
I'm not the most experienced engine mechanic. Im sure I have worn out parts on this mower 730hrs (from a neighbor) nothing's been replaced or worked on until now. (Gx345 fd611)
When I set the clearance like you show and then check it again at tdc (on exhaust compression stroke) I get a completely different reading. Which way is best?. When I first got it and checked the space was so tight I couldn't get any guage into it at all. I had pretty significant tapping before but maybe even worse now. Could be from somewhere else as well. Like your vid it calls for . 10. Any advice from anyone which way I should use to set or I doing something wrong?

1:11:07 Ariens dealer forgot to put this spacer back on when they replace my PTO clutch and then called me up and said the engine blew up. They said I must have overheated the engine at one time and now it blew up. They put four push rod kits in the engine, every time they would go to start the engine, it would bend the push rods. Without that spacer when you tighten up the PTO it pulls the camshaft out towards the outside of the engine. I picked up the mower after paying a Big Bill and took it to another gentleman. He had the same problem, turn the key and Bend new pushrods. He did eventually figure it out and made a new spacer. Total cost to replace a PTO $2200. I lost the paperwork from the first place so I could not take him to court. The riding mower is a 1996 Ariens Grand Sierra 2200, ch22hp engine. These are excellent riding lawn mowers but they only made a few because they cost $12,000 back in 96. Front mid and rear PTO on them, and hydraulic drive Wheels. Cannot recommend this riding mower from back in 1996 enough.

Taryl & GrassRats. Thanks so much for your videos. I have a 285 John Deere with the FD590V engine with a bad water pump that has not been used for years now. The engine runs great other than the water pump issue. I’m guessing that my 285 has pretty much all of the same things to disconnect that the engine in the video had. After watching the video, I may go ahead and swap out the plastic cam for the metal cam. What better time to make the swap.

The first time I ever ran into plastic timing gears was Ford V8's. They started using nylon timing gears in the mid 60's and they ran until 1985. I have a 42,000 original mile 1983 Lincoln Mark VI and fortunately they've already been changed. I bought the car with 32,000 miles on it 2.5 years ago. Can you imagine buying a new car and having to replace the timing gears before 30,000 miles? Another fun fact every ford 4.6, 5.4, 6.8, and the new 5.0 coyote has cams that are made by pressing the lobes onto a hollow tube. I've never read a single instance of one spinning loose surprisingly. Unlike the cam gears on the v8 they used in the Taurus SHO. They put the cam gear on the end of the cam and drove a ball into the end of the camshaft to swage the gear onto the cam. Thos failed pretty early on. I guess that's probably no worse than that decade of cracked heads and soft cams in Chevy V8's. I know and old guy who made a living in the 70's purely by replacing soft Chevy cams for people. When my grandfather rebuilt the engine in his 78 Blazer in the early 90's he spent months trying to find a set of cylinder heads that wasn't cracked between the middle two cylinders.

Funny while watching the video, I said to myself, "self why is the Taryl working on the floor". About a minute later you explained it gives the camera man a better shot. Great minds. Doubt I will ever get into replacing the cam but like to watch. Tom

Can’t believe something engineered in Japan would make a camshaft part out of plastic
