I'm based in France so apologies in advance for my english..., you can't imagine how it is moving for me to hear this Lawn Boy again. Back in the 80's we had exactly the same model ! (but we were missing your great book 🙂) Same colour, same noise, i also remember we had to pump same way, i love it, unbreakable 2 strokes machine. I would have loved to benefit from all your great advices and demos at this time. We learn a lot with you and you share your knowledge with great pedagogy and professionalism. Warm thanks to Boss Taryl and his funny team from France. Fred
Ahh, what a memory... The smells and sounds of summers past. Freshly cut grass mixed with 2-stroke fumes... The comforting hum of a lime green 2-stroke Lawn Boy. Thanks Taryl for bringing this little beast back to life! When I was a kid we had a Western Auto mower with a Clinton 2-stroke, aluminum deck. We named that mower "Old Charlie". There are black/white snapshots of me riding on my dad's shoulders as he mowed the yard with Old Charlie. That was over 50 years ago... wish I could have both of them back.
I love the smell of 2 cycle fumes ,just make up a sticker that says don't worry about the fumes it's a plug in hybrid to keep the environmental libtards off you're back or you could just say SHUTUP!
I can’t tell you how much I enjoy watching your videos. I’m not a small engine mechanic I’m a retired symphony musician who enjoys watching you make all these repairs. You are so clever and your explanations are so thorough and easy to understand. You are a great mechanic and I love watching your videos. I’m retired, and a hobbyist woodworker. I thank you for all the entertainment and wish you and your family The very best.
Hands down the best general duty push mowers ever made..... Light weight, powerful and does a beautiful job of manicuring a lawn. They should have never quit making them !!!!
The only thing I didn’t like about mine was that the right front wheel was behind the discharge chute so it wanted to dig into the ground when mowing uphill. In some parts of my yard I had to drag it behind me.
I got a lawnboy "D" the "brick" motor of 60's vintage. Runs good. I also got it for free and got it running. I probably should put some rings in it but it will run and start so for now I am leaving it. The problem is I don't use it enough. I really have no use for a push mower. I did some work on it just as a challenge. I wish I knew someone who would use it. I picked it up from a trash pile because I used one of these as a child back in the 50's and early 60's. Also, my grandfather owned a hardware store (from the 30's until 1972) and he sold lawnboys. the center isle of the store always had a half dozen lawnboys lined up single file in the Spring. His store one of those old hardware stores that offered much more than what is now considered "hardware." One corner of the store was dedicated to guns, ammo, knives and assorted goods a sportsman would need. The hardwood floor creaked as you walked upon it and the air inside was a compilation of traditional old hardware smells and the ever present cigar he enjoyed throughout the day. Nails were stored in a huge metal binned unit that contained all sorts of nails in bulk that one bought by the pound scooped into heavy duty paper bags with a hand held "claw." I have so many memories of him and the store. This got a bit off topic but this and so much more is what made me pick up an old lawnboy out of the trash and try to get it running. It was a way of connecting to a good part of my past. Thanks for listening.
My dad had one I used in the sixties ( I think it was made in the fifties?). The deck was die cast and had the offset wheels. and I remember the spark plug would glow. Strange? When the recoil broke you could take the recoil off and there was a pulley underneath which you could wind a starter rope around to start it. So you always hoped it would start right away. Lol
Thx for your story of the old store John. That brought back memories of the old hardware store i used to go to in my home gown. It has been closed down for about 25 years now.
John What a great story!!! Reminds me of the hardware store my grandad used to take me in back around the same time you were a child. Same creaky floors and metal bins with the bulk nails and heavy sacks. You could get parts for your equipment too.
Back i 1973, I went to work at a local nursery, and they were a dealer. They sent me to Cleveland for a Lawn Boy service school, on a Saturday. I got a certificate of completion-big time stuff! These were always my favorite mower-if I had yard again, I would get a refurbished LB to cut my grass! Thanks, Taryl!
and thats why l hoard, cool little 2stroke, they were all over now l never see them , guess l went right over shirts and hats and onto monogrammed parts,
I seen a lot of lawn boys restored on pintrist didn't know that these mowers were so sought after. I also didn't know that people collected chainsaws either. I guess when you have been doing this as long as I have you just look at lawn equipment as something that comes in doesn't run I gotta fix it. LOL
Great video Taryl. We used a Lawn Boy Utility mower to mow our extremely steep hill going down to the lake. We would take the handle off and attach a long robe and let the mower down the hill and pull it up with the rope. People used to watch us in their boats as we cut the hill. There was one hundred steps going down to the lake. When our parents passed away, we sold the cabin. Man, it was a lot of work to that property to keep it up. Most of Loon Lake in Hale MI has step hills going down to the lake. A lot of memories with family at the cabin. I doubt if the person who owns the cabin now, cuts the hill like we used to. What a workout that was! That part of the cabin I don't miss. At this time, I have a Lawn Boy Scamp Utility mower in great original condition for sale. My neighbor gave it to me more than twenty years ago. It needed a new recoil starter and air filter cover, and that was all that was wrong with it. Just blew the dust off from it the other day and cleaned the carb and it started right up and ran perfectly. Sense I have had it, it has spent most of its time in storage. I even have the Lawn Boy engine that was on the mower we used up at the cabin. It starts and runs, but I am sure it could use a rebuild. Many hours on it cutting the property up north. Many hard hours! Lawn Boys with 2 cycle engines are great, simple machines. Love your videos, Taryl. Learn a lot and entertained all at the same time. Can't go wrong with that! Grass Rats Rock!!
another GREAT video from the Dactyl family!!! Taryl you do realize that you are putting together a wonderful historical collection of small engine equipment from the 40's up to present day. There are a lot of us who appreciate learning about older equipment. There are many people who are interested in small engine repair and history. I hope you are passing along your wisdom to your 2 great sons. i come from the school that says rebuild them don't scrap them.
Yes we are finding that out so we are doing more videos on that stuff other than showing you How-To say ....replace somet part or belt. But we will also do HOW-TO videos on occasion.
The sound of summer! Growing up in Michigan in the late 80s/early 90s, probably 75% of the neighborhood were running Lawn Boys. I rescued a nice ‘73 D400 from the curb last year, runs great 👍
Grew up in Owosso Michigan. My grandpa bought me a lawn boy in 81 because my push mower broke while i was mowing the neighborhood lawns. Took me 6wks to save the money to repay him & he refused to take money from a 7yr old. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Taryl. Great video as usual. Love the old Lawnboys and have 16 of them from 1968 to 1982, all before the safety bail. Have a 1971 IH Lawnboy and a 1976 Lawnboy Liberty. Plus a couple of Lawnboy edgers, a couple of Lawnboy trimmers, and a bunch of collectibles. Keep up the good work.
Haven't seen a Lawnboy in ages. They were great mowers. Never need to change the oil. Runs at high rpm which is great for cutting. Because it's 2 stroke it was way lighter. It threw the clippings farther as well. I never saw one with a bag but I bet they had one. There's a plate on the deck for one. Due to its 2 stroke less parts and things could break on it. The offset wheels also lended to easy tight areas/corners and made it easy to turn. The 2 stroke ban killed them. To bad but Taryl's Got You. Great work My Dude. Great to see the old girl working again.
@@93sundance I have one with a bag and it's a commercial model , pick it up at a estate sale a few months ago in a three mower lot for $30.00 and the reason I bought the lot was just for the Lawn Boy since I'm into restoring antique chainsaws . Only thing wrong with it the plastic piece that slides that controls the engine speed was broke because it got all gum up and someone forced it and broke it but I got a new one . Its self propelled also .
@@kevinjohnson5214 EPA didn't ban 2 stroke mowers. Manufacturers didn't want to invest in clean 2 stroke engine development. So they discontinued them altogether. Their last models met EPA regs. I guess it was easier(cheaper) to make a 4 stroke do what a 2 stroke could than to make a 2 stroke as clean as a 4 stroke. It was a purely financial decision. We may not like EPA sometimes, but I shudder to think what the air and water would be like today if we left it to engine manufacturers and chemical companies to self regulate with no regulations. I remember rainbow colored rivers and choking at stop lights when I was a kid. The clean air and water acts are two things President Nixon's grandchildren can be proud of.
Great video. I have collected a few Lawnboys, because I became fond of them, because it was my first lawnmower. Back in the late 50s, my mom bought one that had the Iron Horse engine and a pull string. The pull string became a pain in the butt on those days when it was temperamental, but it was a good reliable mower. I am going to have to do a lot of work to get the ones I have, restored to operating condition, and this video had a wealth of tips I intend to apply to my efforts to restore them to a running condition. Thanks for all the entertainment. It is 3:00 am, I have a starter to install in my 4x4, and it's all your fault. Let this be on your shoulders,
I was given a mower just like this 2 days ago. I'm amazed at the coincidence of your video being only 2 weeks old addressing a lawnmower over 3 decades old at the right time for me to take my first nosedive into the wonderful world of Lawn Boy. I'm not even halfway through the video and I'm already excited about working on mine. I would like to buy some of those Lawn Boy parts from you
I had a Lawnboy from HD that I bought new in 1989. It was self propelled with a 3 speed transmission. I changed the air filter, plug, and blade every year. after about 20 years of use the cable that ran from the bail to the cutoff switch on the motor broke and a new one was no longer available. I wired a toggle switch to the top of the handle, so I no longer had the safety feature (which I was happy about). Anyway, I used that mower up until 2018 when the electronic ignition model finally crapped out. I couldn't find a replacement. I never changed any other parts. It even had the original drive belt. I got 29 years of use out of it and the motor was running strong when the ignition gave out. I bought a 20 year old electric start Toro that still runs like new. I'm retired to the country now and have over an acre to mow. I bought a new Cub Cadet LT42 with the 5400 Kohler (Crowler) 18 horse single. I know this is the Courage motor revisited, but there are a lot of improvements. And I will check the torque specs on the top engine case bolts annually. After 1 1/2 seasons and 42 operation hours it still starts and runs flawlessly. It has a Taryl sticker on the center of the steering wheel, so I know it will last. Lol I'd really like to know Taryl's opinion of the new 5400 series. I knew I didn't want that made in China "MTD" motor.
@@tscrain8277 Better than any 4-stroke push mower ever made. Easier to push around the yard than even an overpriced, overweight POS self-propelled mower.
Every year we had to listen to our coworker grip about how much money it cost for the shop to ready his mower and then again during the season, usually, another big expense. After about 6 years, they told him it was done for. and he needed a new mower. We were stunned when he bought another Lawn Boy. Enjoyed your rebuild; was lots of fun.
We had one of these when I was a kid, my grandparents did as well. Mowed a lot of grass with them. The 2 stroke oil and fresh cut grass was a unique smell I miss when I mow.
I have about three or four of these sitting in my garage. One of the best trim mowers to have especially if you have a real steep hillside you don't have to worry about the engine oil lubrication on a steep hill and it's lightweight.
Awesome video on a cool little mower! Ty for taking all the extra time besides the actual engine work, to record, edit, produce and come up with humor to add to these rebuilds on these old machines. Keep em coming! This channel is one of the best out there!
YOUR BUDDY JOE HERE. INFAMOUS. EXELLENT VIDEO. THE NEW COMERS I HAD COME OVER WILL LOVE IT. EXELLENT. YOUR A GREAT GUY AND A TOP NOTCH MECHANIC. AND YOU PUT IN TNE QUALITY WORK OTHERS WON'T DO. I LOVED THOSE MOWERS THE ONE I LOVED THE MOST WAS THE ONE WITH THE GREAT BIG BAG STICKING WAY WAY OUT THE SIDE. SOMETHING ABOUT IT WHEN I WAS LITTLE JUST BROUGHT ME GREAT JOY. THE SMELL OF SWEET CUT GRASS AND THAT GREAT BIG GIANT BAG TO DISFUSE THE AROMA. BEAUTIFUL.... THANKS TARYL FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT.
I never thought I would see one of these old Lawn Boys in action ever again. My grandmother purchased one back in the late 70's or early 80's. To replace her old Briggs 5hp reel lawn mower. I was in my late teens. Boy I'm turning into a dinosaur. Great video brought back old memories.
Fond memories of my Lawn Boy 21 inch, mowed lots of lawns with my little business. The commercial version with the orange gas tank was king back then. Thanks for doing this pal.
I remember seeing these all the time when I was a kid. They always seemed to cut good. But I preferred the Suzuki powered Toros that required every ounce of strength to pull over. Almost no plastic and still very light and powerful. For sure the best mulching and bagging mower I've ever owned. I even know a few commercial outfits still running 70s and 80s Toros despite them being near 40 years old.
"Brendan" - the quintessential Generation Z boy. I loved the one lawn boy I owned. 1990, self propelled (part of the reason toro bought lawn boy was to get at their awesome drive system) 2 cycle and super light and great power. Mine smoked a little under load. Had an aluminum deck. Super light weight and great for hilly lawns. Never had an issue with it.
I got a self-propelled one for $50 at home depot around '97 that somebody returned. It was a 4 cycle. Made the job so much easier than the old push mower I was using.
The early models are the best. Kinda went downhill with the Silver and Gold series…. Getting the blade adapters off intact was the hardest part of working on these. Worked on a lot of old LB mowers back in the day. Still have a couple of customers with the two strokes.
I have an all original 1980 Lawn Boy Scamp. It's in very good condition. Took the carb off and completely disassembled it and cleaned everything. New plug and fresh 2 cycle gas and it started right up, and it ran perfectly. Really have no use for it. It's been in the family sense around 1995. My parents neighbor couldn't get it running and gave to my dad. It didn't take me long to get it running. My parents used it a few times, but they were getting old, so a push mower wasn't best for them. After they passed, I ended up with the Law Boy. I used it a few times to trim around the house. Worked great, but I had newer lawn mowers that I used instead. I have no idea what the Scamp is worth? The only thing that is missing, is the plastic grass deflector. It was on the machine when the neighbor gave it to my dad, I am not sure where it ended up? The blade has little to no wear. I think I replaced it shortly after my dad ended up with it. My question is, what do you think the Scamp is worth? Is 100 dollars to much? I really have no idea what to ask for it.
Taryl your comic antics are genius. I have watched more of your videos than the next 3 channels put together. Very smart adding comedy into mechanics. I look forward to your goofy intros and extros
Old school lawn Boys.. cut better than any push mower on the market today.. I use a vintage lawn boy.. in my lawn care business today... cut quality is 1#.. great video Taryl..👍
Those old lawn boy 2 cycle mowers were the best ever . I ran them out in my lawn business 8 hrs a day 360 days a year for 14 years and not a single break down . Once a year they got a full service but they just wouldnt quit . The cut was better then any mower and they were súper light . If they made that same mower today i'd buy them for my kids homes .
Inherited a 77 lawnboy very similar to that one from an uncle, still runs perfect to this day. And I expect it to run for another 40 years as well. I love how lightweight it is and it can take a beating. Great little machines
The best thing you Dan do for them is make sure to run them on 32:1 mix, that’s what they all called (except the M series with oil injection) and 50:1, even with modern synthetic 2 cycle oil just isn’t enough lubrication. I’ve seen a few D and F engines and a ton of Duraforces with low compression thanks to guys running their 50:1 chainsaw gas in them. I’m sure someone will chime in and say I’m wrong and 50:1 works fine on theirs but I always say better to air on the side of caution, especially when you’re only talking about adding a few ounces more oil.
@@MrTheBigNoze Are you SURE about that mix? I have a 1980 r7070 (F engine), and it specifies 32:1. I started running Echo Red Armor oil, and I actually mix it at 25:1 since it works out better to just use a 2 gallon size bottle to 1 gallon of gas. I ran a little less than 1 tank through it last year, and it already runs smoother on the Red Armor.
We had on of these lawn boys back in like 1963 and it was super. It got where it wouldn't start so we had a squirt can with 2 cycle gas we would squirt in the air intake an it would start first pull and run like a champ. We used that mower for 10 or 12 years priming it to start and it worked great. I think probably the crank was either loose or the main seals were bad thus making it not having enough suction to pull fuel to the ports but no matter it was easy to prime. Great video.😊😊😊😊😊
Growing up one of our neighbors had a lawn boy with the side bagger. The sound was distinctive compared to the Toros and other 4 cycle mowers everyone else had. You could tell he was moving two streets over.
I love that thing. I want one. When I was kid, we had a mower with a crank recoil. You'd flip the handle over on top, crank it up till it got tight, then turn a knob to spin the engine. I remember I was 1 crankin son of a gun. I despised that thing. Lol
My Grandpa had one of those same mowers back in the early 1970's up in Northeast Ohio. He used to have me go cut the yard with it ..I was just a kid back then ...I remember winding that thing up ,then flipping the handle over and hitting the button And the darn thing didnt start ..I was one winding Fool back then ha ha ,Until that thing started..Good Memories
Growing up 1960’s and 70’s We had an old Jacobson reel mower with that same crank recoil mechanism. Once it caught and fired boy you had to hold on as it was self propelled as well by those two big wheels on either side. No throttle. One speed. Turning and going the opposite direction was scary as hell. Grass clippings all over your legs and feet as it was a reel mower. Hated that thing.
We had a riding mower that had that crank style ignition. The engine was underneath you kinda in between your legs. It had a strange bubble style body. Kinda looked like a spaceship. I can't remember for the life of me what the brand was though.
I had one of these and did the exact same as you - got it all cleaned fixed the issues and got it running. Ran like a top. But the stupid starter rope and return spring kept having issues. Replaced the pinion gear but it still kept jumping the winder and I would have to re-wind it. Finally gave up on it and got me a 1978 Snapper 2 Stroke with a Wisconsin-Robin engine. Completely rebuilt it and it runs second pull EVERY time - and it has a throttle too. Nice job.
Very informative video, and full of good experience. I learned alot. These videos take a lot of time and effort to produce, and I appreciate what you do. Great mechanic. Thanks
You're a master at your craft. You got that old Lawn Boy running good, and it mowed grass great. It seemed to run better the more you used it. I need one of those tube squeezers, I might have to order one from your store.
I had one and the light weight was why I purchased it. Someone borrowed straight dino juice from the neighbor once and it seized. When I came home I took out the spark plug and squirted some dino syrup into the cylinder, the carb, and the gas tank. I rocked the blade back and forth a few times until it freed up and then it started right up. I got about another 3 or 4 years out of it.
We had a 50's lawnboy in the family that was used well into the 80's. It still ran good and was so light to push. Got killed one summer when my brother filled it from the straight gas can.
Reminds me of my neighborhood growing up. We'd hang out with a bunch of friends, playing street hockey or football and someone's Dad would be mowing with their 2 stroke Lawn-Boy. Great mower.
Love those 2 stroke lawnboys, had one in 2007 never stalled it... Even in deep grass pushing fast. I also remember it venting the exhaust down into the mower deck through a big u shaped muffler
29:05 Break the top ring in half and use it to scrape out the ring groove. 29:34 Oven cleaner has lye in it. 33:52 Too tight of a ring gap can make them break. Always measure the gap.
Reading through the comments, I see polar opposite responses: "finest mower ever made" or "what a piece of junk." I'm thinking that the people who say it's junk didn't read and follow the owner's manual. In the spring of 1988 I bought a brand new model 7073 (steel deck) and still use it to this day. If you consider the pull-rope a consumable, then there has never been any major work done to it. Carburetor has never been off or even had the bowl removed. To my shame, though, I have never cleaned the exhaust ports yet it continues to run fine. My care and feeding routine: Always use Lawn-Boy brand oil mixed 32:1 Almost always use ethanol-free gas Turn off fuel and allow bowl to run dry when done mowing I've also used Sta-Bil in the past, but after seeing Taryl's tests on fuel additives, it probably isn't doing any good (but probably isn't doing any harm, either).
In my area I am pretty sure I will not run into one of these. But I found this very interesting & watched full video. Great fix Taryl, always nice to bring them back. Hold on to that clip board & manual, it is a part of history. Stay safe, Joe Z
I like the fact that you tell the naysayers Taryl, that you don't care what they say, you have the experience, apparently they just want to be a know-it-all, and I know my opinion of know-it-alls is probably the same as yours Taryl, they know nothing!
my Grandma had a electric start lawn boy push mower. I mowed for an older man who had a self propelled one that never ran right. But I really liked my older Lawn Boy. Easy to push and mowed beautifully.
These were simple and complicated all at the same time. No valves, cams, or many other moving parts. Especially after the governors went away with the F engines. If the crank seals, carb, and ignition coil were good, they run. Always. Run straight gas in them for a few minutes and it's all over, though. 2-stroke mower owners shouldn't loan their mowers out..........
Wow that brings back memories from when took small engine repair in high school learned all about the lawn boy and Briggs & Stratton engines I liked the lawn boy they were great lawnmowers as long as you added the oil too the gas but some people didn’t do that and you would see them on the tree lawns I’d go and pick them up if it pulled and had compression I’d get it running very easy too work on thanks for the video 👍
Those older mowers used to run RICH and smoke like crazy. The exhaust under the deck let the blade blow it away from the operator so it wouldn't gag you too bad.
That sound brings back memories. Used lawn boys for years. My dad got a new one in 70s and we used it till the 80s. Unique sounding mowers. You should consider some other repairs that are necessary in the shop. like floor jack maybe?
Thanks for the video. Granddaddy always had Lawnboys. I inherited his last one when he passed away in 2006. I didn't know anything about small engines then and let it go when it quit running. Wish I still had it.
I have two of them I love them ones of self-propelled I will never buy a lawn mower again when they quit making lawn boys they did away with the greatest lawn mower ever made
Mine had the muffler around the shaft under the deck and yes it was pretty quiet. I think that comes from the bottom exhaust discharge on their outboards.
Man! I've just tuned into your channel for the very first time. I've NEVER done this before but, when you showed that "Metal Tube Gipper" dealio I thought, okay... Now that brilliant! So, I went to "YOUR STORE" & placed an order for the larger 2.5" wide champ. I honestly love this concept as you're keeping the tube-goo flowing evenly, or for Pearl Jam fans, Even Flow... I digress... But, now I can keep the tubes nice & neat & use it to the last drop! Hmm... Now I'm getting personal!😂 Anyhoo... Such a great channel. Looking forward to catching up on watching more. Take good care & great job on the Lawnboy. I'm a big Lawnboy fan & I'm currently restoring g my beloved 1993, / 3-Speed, Self Propelled beauty I picked up for $80 online & this things runs like a charm. Bought it 3 years ago & I just decided to do a complete restoration. Paint and al! You're a big help. Many thanks!
Bought my 1978 LawnBoy mower in 1980 after building our first home in Claremore, Oklahoma and continued to use it into the 2000’s while living in Lamar, Missouri where a LawnBoy factory had been for years. Great mower. Don’t ever wash it while the mower is hot because the electronic ignition won’t like you! 😜
The first lawnmower I ever bought was about a 1980 or '81 Lawnboy that I bought around 1983. I really liked that mower, self propelled and lightweight. They seemed to cut better than others in my opinion. I've always been a fan of Lawnboy and Snapper and I have an old Lawnboy like the one you just rebuilt that needs some attention, it won't run.
Things too check spark and fuel 90% if the time it would be the float got waterlogged and would sink and it would spill gas all over the place out of the carb. I don’t remember how many I fixed like that but it was an easy fix but now I don’t know if you can get parts like back in the day like the carb rebuild kit? Good luck
Great job! We had one that was older... All metal. Kind of white, or off white. That same wheel arrangement though, I remember that.... And we bagged, we had a bagger... Mulching was still a future invention.... It must have been 1970, or 71, when I started cutting the lawn.... and the mower was not new, back then... Pretty sure my Dad got it used back then. Anyways, it ran great, forever... I was pretty young when I cut the grass... I couldn't push the mower. The mower was self propelled! Heh heh heh! Safety stuff??? Yeah, there was nothing... If I fell down, mower would keep on going, until it crashed into something.... It's amazing any of us lived to see adulthood, isn't it?
Neighbor when I was growing up had several lawn boy mowers. Him cutting his grass practically every day with his tongue sticking out just pushing away behind his mower is a fond memory of my childhood and a late neighbor who treated me like a son.
We had one of these in the mid 70's. It was self propelled with a bagger, my dad would spend most of the day mowing an acre and a half with it. Thanks for that memory.

Light weight, powerful and does a beautiful job of manicuring a lawn.
They should have never quit making them !!!!
I've got 2 lawnboys. Best lawnmower out there I say.
OMC built good engines for these LB's then big daddy Federal said no more lawn mower two-stroke engines
@@redwolfpiping5701 OMC sold LawnBoy to Toro in 1988 - years before the Fed Ban.
The only thing I didn’t like about mine was that the right front wheel was behind the discharge chute so it wanted to dig into the ground when mowing uphill. In some parts of my yard I had to drag it behind me.
EPA killed a beautiful thing
Great story. A piece of Americana that is being lost... the local family owned hardware store. You have a talent for story telling.
His store sounds like it was fantastic
Back i 1973, I went to work at a local nursery, and they were a dealer. They sent me to Cleveland for a Lawn Boy service school, on a Saturday. I got a certificate of completion-big time stuff! These were always my favorite mower-if I had yard again, I would get a refurbished LB to cut my grass! Thanks, Taryl!
and thats why l hoard, cool little 2stroke, they were all over now l never see them , guess l went right over shirts and hats and onto monogrammed parts,
Taryl's voices crack me the hell up... Maybe you need to put in some voices on the channel. :-)))
Just keep using your Taryl fuel-testing mug.
I seen a lot of lawn boys restored on pintrist didn't know that these mowers were so sought after. I also didn't know that people collected chainsaws either. I guess when you have been doing this as long as I have you just look at lawn equipment as something that comes in doesn't run I gotta fix it. LOL
Hands down the toughest push mower engine I've ever witnesed
Mustie1 watched other people fix stuff for fun?!
When he showed that bag that said mustee, i thought of mustie 1. and low and behold a comment from mustie him self.👍
Best combination of comedy and repair videos on TH-cam ! You’ve definitely got a forever subscriber !
The sound of summer! Growing up in Michigan in the late 80s/early 90s, probably 75% of the neighborhood were running Lawn Boys. I rescued a nice ‘73 D400 from the curb last year, runs great 👍

Nice! I remember cutting grass at my grandfather's house with a Lawnboy mower in the 70's! It was a great mower!
Grew up in Owosso Michigan. My grandpa bought me a lawn boy in 81 because my push mower broke while i was mowing the neighborhood lawns. Took me 6wks to save the money to repay him & he refused to take money from a 7yr old. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Great to see these old Lawn Boys still being restored Taryl your the man.
I love how you make old machines come back to life. 👍🏿
I love how you have $200,000 worth of tools to make this stuff happen
@@fair2middlin not even close.
We had one with a bag when I was a kid in mid 1970's. It was also self propelled.
Thank the E P A ..for that .
There was/is no 2 stroke ban. If you find one, let me know.
All my grandfather ever used was a lawn boy mower, he loved those things!
I'd love to see you do more Lawn Boys. I learned a lot watching you do this one.
I think Brendon wants to do a lawn boy also.
Let this be on your shoulders,
Lawn-boy Lover? Didn’t they have those great hits like Turn me over, and Mowing for the weekend? Love that band!
Everybody's mowin' on the weekend ALSO Mowin' every minute of it
I was given a mower just like this 2 days ago. I'm amazed at the coincidence of your video being only 2 weeks old addressing a lawnmower over 3 decades old at the right time for me to take my first nosedive into the wonderful world of Lawn Boy.
I'm not even halfway through the video and I'm already excited about working on mine. I would like to buy some of those Lawn Boy parts from you
Really love these lawnboy mowers some of the best mower ever made.
I've got a few of them I want to restore eventually. Lawnboy probably is one of the best walk behind mowers ever made. Love them.
Wasn't impressed.
The silver and gold series I liked the most due to the amount of power they put out.
@@tscrain8277 Better than any 4-stroke push mower ever made. Easier to push around the yard than even an overpriced, overweight POS self-propelled mower.
@@karlschauff7989 Again, it may have been just a bad Lawnboy I had, but not impressed! 😏

Great to see old mowers run again! Finding parts is our big thing! Wheres your dumpster at🤣🍻
Fond memories of my Lawn Boy 21 inch, mowed lots of lawns with my little business.
Always like looking at a mechanics work shop! Rock on Taryl 🤘
I'm pretty sure LB adopted Toro's self propel system.
That old Lawn Boy will still be running when you and I are gone! Good Job!
I'm a bit of a LB collector , got several of the D series and a few F series. Love them , they just keep on running with a little TLC.
@@russellmaddock3492 Depending on condition I would think a collector would offer $150 -$200+.

Old school lawn Boys.. cut better than any push mower on the market today.. I use a vintage lawn boy.. in my lawn care business today... cut quality is 1#.. great video Taryl..👍
If oil = dinosaur syrup, and gas = dinosaur juice, then 2-stroke fuel must be dinosaur cocktail!
GOOD one!
@@J.R.in_WV Thanks for the advice. I do run 50:1 but I use Lawn-boy brand oil. The machine says to run 50:1 but I may keep it a little richer
@@MrTheBigNoze
Are you SURE about that mix?
That is a neat mower. Good job on the rebuild. Glad to see it getting some love.
Nice job.
I love the mustee joke, I just seen the coffee mug used in the latest video of the log splitter.
My 2 favorite TH-cam channels. Taryl and Mustie1. Come on Mustie, get some mugs to sell so Taryl has something to drain old gas into.
Love the sound effects, especially the spring "boing".
I used to love those lawnbiys, so lightweight. Good one Taryl!
I got about another 3 or 4 years out of it.
great way to spend a sunday afternoon-watching taryl videos
We had a 50's lawnboy in the family that was used well into the 80's. It still ran good and was so light to push. Got killed one summer when my brother filled it from the straight gas can.
they would run forever if you added oil to the gas
Reminds me of my neighborhood growing up. We'd hang out with a bunch of friends, playing street hockey or football and someone's Dad would be mowing with their 2 stroke Lawn-Boy. Great mower.
Love those 2 stroke lawnboys, had one in 2007 never stalled it... Even in deep grass pushing fast. I also remember it venting the exhaust down into the mower deck through a big u shaped muffler
Thank you so much for this video. Have to do an engine rebuild on my D600 soon. Really appreciate this and the humor.
This is awesome! I used this exact same mower to cut my grandparents lawn when I was a kid. Brings back some memories...

Mustie and Taryl best on TH-cam..👍
Reading through the comments, I see polar opposite responses: "finest mower ever made" or "what a piece of junk."
I'm thinking that the people who say it's junk didn't read and follow the owner's manual.
My care and feeding routine:
Always use Lawn-Boy brand oil mixed 32:1
Almost always use ethanol-free gas
Turn off fuel and allow bowl to run dry when done mowing
I've also used Sta-Bil in the past, but after seeing Taryl's tests on fuel additives, it probably isn't doing any good (but probably isn't doing any harm, either).
Wow, does that bring back memories, including cleaning the exhaust ports. Thanks Taryl.
Did anyone notice taryl put that twist tie off off that 20$ bill in his hair 🤣🤣🤣
my Grandma had a electric start lawn boy push mower.
Why was the muffler down in the deck was that to keep the noise down or just because that was the most covenant place to put it.
Those older mowers used to run RICH and smoke like crazy. The exhaust under the deck let the blade blow it away from the operator so it wouldn't gag you too bad.
Blew exhaust down to smoke out the bugs 🤷♂️
I thought it was to cauterize the tips of the grass after it was cut to keep it from growing back so quickly
In this way you get to step on the smoke and leave a true Carbon Footprint
That sound brings back memories. Used lawn boys for years. My dad got a new one in 70s and we used it till the 80s. Unique sounding mowers. You should consider some other repairs that are necessary in the shop. like floor jack maybe?
Keep the right gas mix in them, clean the carburetor and ports once in a while, they'll run forever.
Thanks for the video. Granddaddy always had Lawnboys. I inherited his last one when he passed away in 2006. I didn't know anything about small engines then and let it go when it quit running. Wish I still had it.
I have two of them I love them ones of self-propelled I will never buy a lawn mower again when they quit making lawn boys they did away with the greatest lawn mower ever made
Really nice job on the video Grass Rat! Thanks for taking the time to teach us!
: But Taryl---you can use a hose clamp instead of a piston ring compressor.
that sure seems like it would work.................
Run one of those for years! Brought back a lot of memories. Thanks Taryl!
Just curious why taryl didn' pressure scrub the lawn boy before he started tearing it apart?
Love those lawnboy mowers! Two stroke smoke and fresh cut grass!!
These should run quietly when repaired and running properly as the exhaust is exiting into the blades... is that right?
Mine had the muffler around the shaft under the deck and yes it was pretty quiet. I think that comes from the bottom exhaust discharge on their outboards.

A better way to neutralize it is to mix some baking soda in water, and pour that on it. Plain water just thins the acid out.
Good luck
Would have liked to seen the difference in the compression after you worked on it.
For the dental picks you can get some broken ones from your dentist for free. That’s what I did. Just ask and they might be able to help you out.
Does this guy look like he goes to the dentist? The entire families teeth are jacked up .
You can buy sets of them cheap on Amazon and eBay as well
They might report Taryl to the ADA for tooth abuse.
the lawn boy mower is the only mower that cuts the grass the same way even when you pull the mower backwards ,,very cool video taryl.
You are a man of thousand mysteries.
I lmao every time I watch your video.
He was a good man who loved a pretty yard.
Very Nice little suitcase style LawnBoy! I have a 1980 8401 commercial, with an F-series engine on it. Best mower I’ve ever used!
