These automobiles were overbuilt to last a lifetime or more, unfortunately there is nothing like this today.

Beautiful car! Too bad it doesn't smell like a Mercury. Next to the exhaust note, that smell is my favorite thing about them!

I love these totally stock. I prefer the '49 model over the '50 for the dash and bit of cleaner front end. This example is amazing. I love the color and originality.

@ Joseph Consoli I Replaced The Original 1950 Dash In My Merc, (That Had Sweep Gauges), For A 1949 Dash Instead. Not Only Because It Looked Nicer To Me, But The Updated Modern 12-Volt Gauges That We're Needed When It Was Switched Over To 12V + Ground, Fit Right Inside The 49 Dash Gauge Holes. The Whole Cost Of Buying The 49 Dash, Having It Repainted, Installing The Gauges And Doing The Rewiring Cost Me About $2K. But HEY; The Public Looks At The OUTSIDE Of The Restored Car To Enjoy. While I Can Look At The Nicer INSIDE Of The Dashboard To Enjoy While I Drive It. Adding To The List Of Improvements The Car Has On It... Almost The Same Green Color, Only A Few Shades Brighter...

Should start at 1st crank,, from the 1939 all flatheads start 1st time my experience from 1940 to date
Overdrive works after 35 mph then the kickdown is for passing

Battery is shot, needs to be replaced. And overdrive is NOT a passing gear. I had overdrive on a 50 Ford and it simply is a fourth foreward gear. Meant to be a gas saver. Steering wheel is not standard on a 49 Mercury. That's from a later model. I had a 49 Mercury as well, so I'm familiar with it.

My 50 Buick on 6volt did the same when I cranked it. Wire wasn't good between battery and starter. Fixed that and it cranked like a champ. So either your battery or wire/ground isn't in good order.

Definitely Needs A New Battery, Water Added To The Cells Or Charged Up. Starts WAY TOO SLOW. Overdrive ISN'T Working. You Push The Dash Lever IN To Engage The Overdrive To Work. Could Be A VERY COSTLY BILL To Have Repaired With Electrical Components, Or Even The Gearing Itself. Soft Spongy Hoses Could Be A Sign Of Deterioration INSIDE The Hoses. Steering Wheel Is From A Later Model Car. Perhaps Another Early 50's Merc. Vacuum Wipers AREN'T That Good To Depend Upon, Even Though Mercury Pulled The Vacuum Through The Fuel Pump To Assist Them. NOT A Rainy Day Car To Be Driving Anyway. Roof Visors SUCK, Causing Added Restricted Vision From Already Smaller Windshields. Might Be Usefully In Continually Sunny Places, Like Arizona Desert Areas. Leaky Shocks Are An Added $100.00+ Expense. You Need To Show The Car Underneath, Especially To See If The Dual Exhaust Came From Separate Headers Attached To Each Side Of The Engine Block. The Original Exhaust Had A Crossover Pipe That Added To Excessive Exhaust Flow Restriction. Sometimes Overheating And Even Block Damage. NO, The Sloshing Fuel In The Gas Tank On Turns Made NO DIFFERANCE. Fuel Is Drawn From A Tube At The Front Bottom Of The Tank, And A Glass Fuel Bowl Is Part Of The Fuel Pump, To Keep The Additional Carbonator Fuel Bowl Supplied With Fuel... Ford's 100th Anniversary Was In 1953. HOW Was A 1949 Mercury Car, (That First Came Out About 10-Years Earlier In The Late 1930's), Become Part Of A 100th Anniversary Special??? Makes No Sense!!!
