This is miniature gaming done right. One of the best systems for determining initiative that adds tension and unpredictability to the scenarios at hand. Great demo presentation and a superb gaming table. Who wouldn't want to get engaged with such a miniatures system such as this? You can actually pick up the game through this video and that means they got the rules right. If I hadn't invested a ton in Dust Tactics, I would be very interested in this particular format. Might just try it down the road.
Ive been eyeing this since its ruleset seems amazing! But the setting and artistical theme of Dust is so wonderful ive looked into that as well. Then i heard about Konflikt 47 and im utterly mega hyped about it :) Dust still has the most badass models but konflikt47 seem to shamelessly steal its entire idea so who knows what may come!
Great how the vid explains each step, for non gamers well. I don't mind the pace their going at as their going thru the moves etc rules etc, tactics well i think this is an example/demo if u want to place your units out in the open in the first moves ...your decision. This has explained a lot re mechanics of the game rules. For me great.
I've been following warlord for a good few years now, the only thing holding me back is how I'll find people who play bolt action as I don't have any close (nerdy) friends.
Although this is an instructional/learning video of the Bolt Action game, there is a very useful tip for ALL wargamers who will insist on calculating all the variables applicable in a situation during a game before rolling the bloody dice! at 47.09 he just rolled the dice and then discussed what that meant, i.e. a miss! During a regular game, this simple little process really speeds up the game play, of course not whilst you are still learning the game rules and mechanics. Most games involving die/dice rolls, have systems where rolling low is bad and high is good or vice-a-verse, so roll the dice first, if it is a 1 and that always results in a miss, then wasting time calculating what would have been a hit is now superfluous! So, ROLL THE DICE FIRST!!!!
Giancarlo Torres I downloaded the rules last night after watching this. It helps that the rulebook is cheaper by several orders of magnitude. But the game has a nice balance reading through - there are levels of complexity, without getting TOO complex. We're thinking of maybe focusing on the Pacific, esp the fall of Singapore, and we can start work on it going "the British were pretty inexperienced ... the Japanese elite troops", and you can start working out scenarios based on that ...
Its alot like 40k in a way. It's really money friendly. And if you like historical it's pretty cool. I like it. Didnt think I would, but I do. Seems awesome. Bought 2 boxes already. US and Waffen SS
I love playing 40k, but my gosh, the prices. For $300 you could have two pretty nice Bolt Action armies. In 40k $300 will buy you half of one decent army. I'm actually considering switching to Bolt Action from 40k before I get too invested (literally) into Warhammer.
Bolt Action really revived my inner child having collected and kinda played (with own rules) Warhammer back in the day...I recently got me a pack of US infantry and oince theyre painted Im gonna get some germans...I always paint one set of figures before getting more otherwise I cant keep stay motivated and end up with a half painted army haha This was actually one of the best demo games Ive seen on YT for any tabletop game, especially because a new player played vs some veterans...best way to explain the rules!
Why is this so entertaining to watch? I've never played a single miniature wargame in my life, but this had me hook from beginning to end just as an spectator.
Thanks to you guy at beasts of war I got my first bolt action infantry set and I'm planning on going to play a game of this next weekend when I get everything I need to start so thanks
We're so glad to hear you've enjoyed our content so much to get your own, please let us know in our forums how you get on with your games :) We'd love to see a followup battlereport!
Hi guys! That was a very interesting and informative video. I just started Warhammer 40k last year so it's unlikely for me to switch the game already but I'll definitely follow it :) I've seen other tabletop channels talking about different games and giving painting tutorials and from a 40k point of view with all the unrealistic rules and units I always wondered how a WW2 or other realistic games would be played. So this video was exactly what I was hoping for, well done guys! Now I have some questions for you veterans: 1. Are there many players/tournaments going on? As for me this is the first time hearing about this game 2. Is every successful wound and instant kill or are there special units with more health points/wounds/lives? 3. Can you attack for example the guy in the turret of the Sherman tank so that he can't use the (tower) MG anymore? I think that would be a realistic move for a sniper if he doesn't have other important targets left like officers or bazooka teams
In my area (Sacramento) there's a game store called "Ogre's Den" which has Bolt Action games every week and often has Bolt Action tournaments on the weekends. I actually see more Bolt Action than Warhammer at this store, probably because the cost of models is so much lower for Bolt Action.
1. I also came from a 40k background and in my area though there are more 40k players there is still a strong Bolt Action community. I will also say that in my experience that community tends to be significantly friendlier as well! 2. Almost without exception a kill is a kill. The only thing I can think of that is even somewhat different is with weapon teams like MMG or mortars in which case most people glue all three men to a single base, though they are still treated as though they were three separate models. No space marines or power armour so a bullet is enough to take someone out of action! 3. Not exactly, but sort of! You won't be able to kill him but you can suppress him! Open topped vehicles (and unbuttoned ones!) can be pinned by small arms, something that a closed turret one could not! Hope this helps!
Fantastic vid (both part1&2). Very informative. Great introduction to the world of role playing. This was so inspiring, that I decided to build a terrain base with my son (mainly basing it on the scene/terrain as in this vid). I can see this becoming a main pass time hobby....thanks for sharing.
Hello, I was trying to look up the Assault On Normandy set on the web site but cannot seem to find it. Where can I get this set as it is the one you highlight in the video?
Great video again guys. These demo games really help get to grips with the dynamics of a new game. I'm just drooling over those models and the possibilities! Love your presenting Warren.
The models are nice, the equipment option of guns is brilliant as it is truly (what you see is what you get). I have not seen the bag of turn dice before but seems equally brilliant.
I like the Stug (Tank hunter/destroyer) It's got great camo finish! They would hide in the terrain and then pop out to 'shank' enemy tanks then quickly disappear from sight!
This is the kind of thing I love. Simulating historical war that I cannot actually take part in. Perhaps there can be a modern war game with UAVs. Much more interesting than Risk, though both are fun.
Great video and great Bolt Action board. The random shrubs and bushes seem stuck or glued into the board. What are they made from? The bocage and larger trees are obviously separate I am just referring to the smaller more random shrubs. The effect is great, I am in the process of making a modular board from foam insulation board and want to use a similar method on bushes.
World war 2 snipers didn't work in two man teams, that tactic wasn't developed until after vietnam. Its funny how little things like that nibble on the back of your head.
I wouldn't say WW2 snipers didn't work in teams, because Russians did in many instances use spotters. So maybe it's more accurate to say that American snipers didn't work in teams yet.
I've been away from the miniature community for awhile. I was wondering, is it common for people to just collect and paint these rather than playing? It seems like it would be cool just to have these figures for the look of them.
+OdinMMA Thats what I do with my Battletech minis, but that is partly due to having no one to play with which I sort of need to help me learn the rules. I have painted most of my minis simply cause I like doing it.
That's a gorgeous board. Really well designed and represents its theme (WW2 Europe) well. This board is specifically designed for the scale of this game, kind of lowers it's replay-ability on other board games of different scale.
Bought the 1st edition of this game at the start of the month for 50% off along with Future Wars. I haven,t regretted it, good game, solid rules, well written, clear rules. Now I just need to purchase a bunch of WWII miniatures...
I like the look of this game, the simple dice rolls...i wish the leadership roll was simple like the shoot and fire...but the initiative is a clever thing to do.
the tank 90 degrees diagram that you put up at 47:27. is there a down load of that so it can be used in games where player done agree on with is or is not the side armour ?
i have to admit that after those videos I bought Bolt Action Normandy starter and planning to buy starter armies nasi and US to expand the box. looks great and I got enough wh40
Hey anyone, maybe a bit of a silly question, but I'm looking to get into this, but for the most part, are games limited to 2 players or can you include more people?
@1:04:00 Gotta like how the judge just casually eyeballs that half of the squad might be over half range and then proceeds to measure just to check and it turns out his instinct was right.
YO! Alessio... anyone! I bought some Soviet Assault Engineers SG43 HMG team, and there's no indication of rules or the points they cost! Do they have body armour? How many points for Reg or Veteran? Does it have extra pen like DSHK or extra shots like MAXIM? Can't find rules for em!
Hey guys. Just getting into Bolt Action. This board looks amazing! How would I go about making one like this (that isn't just flat)? Are there any good tutorials out there?
InDaValley We are working on Flames Of War, but this has the advantage that if you already have 28mm scenery, you're pretty good to go. We're assembling the FoW armies, but we know we need to start collecting the scenery for that scale, and that's a bit of a :(
Essentially, yes. You can have off-table reserves and sometimes a scenario calls for first turn wave: figures are not set up, but come on from the table edge when given an order die. Turns are based on drawing order dice (not you-go-I-go). Finally, using your officers, multiple units can be moved in the same turn.
great looking game. would love to see a video about hail Caesar, im interested in that game also coz of the time period but would like to see how it plays first.
I don't know if it was brought up, but when you lose your commander you get a permanent pin marker to that unit and one more pin so that unit should be at 2 pins.. Correct me if I'm wrong
If you thought 40k figs look out of proportion next to 28mm figs like these warlord ones hen wait till you see a 40k vehicle next to onw of these. The tanks here are 1/52 scale (which roughly correlates with 28mm scale) GW tanks are their own made up uber scale, but are closer to 1/35. Great video, Bolt Action is a really fun game, and the figures available, both Warlord and others like Artizan etc. are great. A brilliant game to try if you fancy moving into historicals from 40k.
Hey gentleman, please excuse my ignorance. I am totally knew to the game and just purchased the rule book. Is the rule book enough to get started. I bought a few hundred dollars worth of Menoth and finished painting them. Them didn't come out too bad, but I think they are table top worthy. As long as there is some color to the figures. I really dislike to see unpainted models on the field. I love this hobby and I think painted models only add to its enhancement. I could use a few pointers so I will keep in touch with you guys. I am looking forward to new videos and can't wait to get started on my own army. Take care and happy war gaming to you guys.
I think the best aspect of this game is a difference in gameplay. I like it because it's different from other fighting board games (namely 40k) where a few 72" weapons absolutely dominate the field and there are some unrealistic things that come into play with the traditional move, shoot, assault phases of a player's turn. I've seen a player took all their units out into the open to focus fire on a unit and knock them out and go back to cover the next turn, which in RL would be stupid at best.
are the models from this game same scale aka could be use to represent some sort of wh40k imperial guards? like some form of archaic back world army? or are they too small?
I love this video I watch it over and over I just recently started building a table and I got the Band of Brothers 2nd edition box set I was just curious as to what you think I should add as reinforcements to both sides to make for a slightly bigger game . I'm trying to keep it historically accurate to the theater and time from . Maybe a m3 stuart to reinforce the allies ? Maybe some German paratroopers?
Although the maximum effective range of a M1 was about 500, studies show most WW2 battle fighting distances for US rifles were less than 300 yards. Trust me, most soldiers cannot fire accurately at the maximum range of their weapons and actually fight at closer quarters than the maximum ranges of their weapons. Likewise, my M16 has a range up to 800 yards, but most battles I fought I was shooting distances are closer to 200-300 yards. I think the distances are limited, but allow more flanking.
I have to say, never having played a tabletop war game before, this video sold me on trying Bolt Action! Very entertaining chaps!

@@-Markus- Go even further and Use Konflikt and Dust minis in a proxy imperial guard 40k army.
I know times change and one should not be stuck in the past but I miss these times. Beasts of War, bolt action and flames of war
This game is amazing, so much fun.
Thanks Lloyd :D
Great how the vid explains each step, for non gamers well. We're glad you enjoyed it from an outsider perspective :D
Alessio Cavatore, the man who wrote the best Skaven Army book in GW history. If he's in this game, the chance is I'll follow suit.
I didn't choose the stug life... The stug life chose me, molded me into it.
Thanks to you guy at beasts of war I got my first bolt action infantry set and I'm planning on going to play a game of this next weekend when I get everything I need to start so thanks

Loving this game so far; and I've just ordered a box set of waffen ss. Can't wait to paint them up!

I just tried a demo game of Bolt Action at my FLGS on Sunday, and it was awesome. Totally hooked on this game, one of the best I've played.
Very fun to watch. Love the commentary and production from BreastsOfWar. Great game too.
Good video to learn the rules by!
Ordered the book (2nd edition) and dice. Got some printed paper/card buildings to make. Then going to get a few small units to start off. Can't wait.
Best bolt action tutorial ever!!! Thanks!!
Hello, I was trying to look up the Assault On Normandy set on the web site but cannot seem to find it. Where can I get this set as it is the one you highlight in the video?
I've watched a few games online, but this is the first time I've seen the rules explained properly. Looks like a lot of fun.
"wrath of the master race shell"
The whole terrain looks ace
Great video again guys. These demo games really help get to grips with the dynamics of a new game. I'm just drooling over those models and the possibilities!
Love your presenting Warren.
Most enjoyable! I have started painting infantry for this very game.

excellent batrep, love the dice turn mechanic
Game is brilliant and cheap when compared to GW Monopolyst. Great models, great variety of them, I'm playing it and loving it.
Hello , I'm just getting going and my first question how do you do artilary and bazooka
Another good series from BOW. This and the Flames of War series are doing a great job of enticing folks like me into looking into starting the game.
One of the best war gaming videos I have ever seen, thanks guys!!
why is this stuff so fascinating?
I watched this whole video , I'm such a geek.
My first time to see war gaming.... fascinating..... great video.
this game is awesome i totally made my decision to buy these models
This is the kind of thing I love. Simulating historical war that I cannot actually take part in.
Perhaps there can be a modern war game with UAVs.
Much more interesting than Risk, though both are fun.
Just received Assault and an extra rule book today. The contents of the box look extremely intimidating. Wish me luck.
Very much enjoying this vid. The rules remind me of the first set I used back in the 70's. I think I'll race out and buy the game next weekend.
Really great game you guys had going. Thats the kind of fun I want from a game.
The game has it's own dice. That cripples it.
World war 2 snipers didn't work in two man teams, that tactic wasn't developed until after vietnam. Its funny how little things like that nibble on the back of your head.
Truly
I wouldn't say WW2 snipers didn't work in teams, because Russians did in many instances use spotters. So maybe it's more accurate to say that American snipers didn't work in teams yet.
2 man sniper teams have been the norm since ww1
They did in most countries.
U.S. Marines in WWII had one man as scout/sniper in their unit (platoon-sized element ?)
This looks like a right giggle - going to show the video to a mate of mine who's into 40K and see if I can convince him into it! Thanks!
+James Beil :D
i was thinking of this game or flames of war now i prefer this game its looks amazing and good set of rules
I've been away from the miniature community for awhile. I was wondering, is it common for people to just collect and paint these rather than playing? It seems like it would be cool just to have these figures for the look of them.
OdinMMA that's pretty normal bud.
nuzuk Yes, in hindsight I guess it was a pretty obvious question aha. Thanks though, I appreciate the response.
+OdinMMA Thats what I do with my Battletech minis, but that is partly due to having no one to play with which I sort of need to help me learn the rules. I have painted most of my minis simply cause I like doing it.
I mix Bolt Action with 40K. Absolutely love it
One thing im struggling with is how to get the terrain that good. Great video, thanks!
Good demo. Love Bolt Action
That's a gorgeous board. Really well designed and represents its theme (WW2 Europe) well. This board is specifically designed for the scale of this game, kind of lowers it's replay-ability on other board games of different scale.
I thought you could not measure before deciding? (p31) But in essence, we see the new player deciding then measuring as he decides. 14:36
Nice guide and an excellent terrain table. Really like the dice action system.
Wow this looks a great game. Have seen this in my local gaming shop, wasn't completely convinced but after watching this I'm sold.
i have to admit that after those videos I bought Bolt Action Normandy starter and planning to buy starter armies nasi and US to expand the box. looks great and I got enough wh40
I assume this is a first edition game, what are the changes between first and second edition?
Ha, This is so nerdy, yet sooo cool. I would totally play if i knew people who were into this. Bad ass!
Why don't you check out the Places section on our website to see if anyone is playing nearby :) www.beastsofwar.com/places/
Fantastic introduction to the game. Thanks guys. Can you tell me the size of the table this demo was played on please
6x4'
More Bolt Action games! :) ...please.
I have studied this war for 15 years i have add. I have great fantasy so please id be glad to help.
Nice job guys. Soldier cam is great.

Hey guys. Just getting into Bolt Action. This board looks amazing! How would I go about making one like this (that isn't just flat)? Are there any good tutorials out there?
How do you know the health, damage, rate of fire, etc.?
They are really camoflagued to that board I didn't even think there was any miniatures on the table until he said so.
So do i need a book for every army or is everything covert in a main book
What is a good game like this to start playing? I was thinking about flames of war or even this, but I wanted to know what people are still playing.

the best way to play a wargame like this is to ignore what your opponent is doing or at least ignore what your soldiers could not see.

"I don't know, my head's on fire." Ha, Ha!
This was incredibly interesting to watch
Game looks very cool. My eye started twitching when you called the StuG a tank like 30 times when it's an assault gun though! :)
Dweeb: "he's pointing, as all good sergeants do!"
Nerd: "Good officer!"
Come on, man lol
Dakota Miles really? You're calling them dweebs and nerds when YOU are watching the video? 😂
great looking game. would love to see a video about hail Caesar, im interested in that game also coz of the time period but would like to see how it plays first.
I don't know if it was brought up, but when you lose your commander you get a permanent pin marker to that unit and one more pin so that unit should be at 2 pins.. Correct me if I'm wrong

do you actually have to hit to get a pin marker or you get apin marker only by shooting at the unit?
I like how during the demo game they don't roll any hits
great work guys, well done
whats the size of your battlefield
are the models from this game same scale aka could be use to represent some sort of wh40k imperial guards? like some form of archaic back world army? or are they too small?
I wonder if the 11+ would include the Maus, Tortoise and the T28 gun carriage
There are some sites with templates to make some terrain and what not just gotta scrounge them up!
Game looks interesting. Us Advanced Squad Leader players love WWII.
