On one of their tours, I sat right next to Neil peart's drum set. On the day he died, I cried the entire day. These guys were the greatest band of all time. And nice! No drugs. No alcohol. No partying. Just three nerdy dudes. Peart wrote all of the lyrics to most of their songs. The world will not be the same without him.
I was 12 years old and was playing in the park of my hometown in Thornhill and we heard music coming from the factories so we climbed on the dumpsters and watched these 3 guys playing the coolest music. They noticed us and we thought we were in trouble but they came out and talked about hockey (that's what Canadians do😂) and they told us about themselves and their music and we talked about their cars they were driving nice cars. Then Geddy and Alex gave us guitar picks and Neil gave us drumsticks. They were so down to earth and humble. I didn't know who they were but I went and found out. I went to see them in 87 and 03 truly an amazing experience and a great bunch of guys. RIP Neil❤
And on the drums, the one and only, the GOAT, the Professor, Neil Peart. RESPECT! Rock in Peace Neil 😔 Yes, Rush! They are sooooo good. Keep going on them. Just three suggestions from them Spirit of Rádio, Limelight, YYZ. Keep rockin'. Peace
Not to argue but go listen to Jethro Tull Bursting Out from 1978. Barriemore Barlow did all the things Neil would do but much earlier. Just to compare.
@@ericburch2531 I get it.. but I saw Tull years before Rush was popular. I think they are both phenomenal drummers, but one was doing it a few years earlier. John Bonham said “Barriemore Barlow was the best drummer to ever come out of England”… look it up.
40 years, totaling 30 albums. Seems like it should be 40 albums, though, considering that they were releasing at least 1 per year during their first decade of making albums. There just comes a point at which a band will have to start pacing themselves a bit more. 👍
Arguably the sickest 3-piece group to ever take to the stage. All of them are phenomenal. Geddy is one of the best bass players I've ever seen, in addition to the vocals, and keyboard work. Alex is probably in my personal top 10 guitarists ever. Then there is Neil, who was and likely still remains in basically everyone's top 5, or even 3, and often 1 greatest drummer in rock history. There are very few bands that I consider to have the kind of musical sophistication of classical composers. Rush is one of them.
I used to play drums, and all of the accolades about Peart are true, but Geddy's bass playing is world-class, and Alex can play the hell out of a guitar. How the three of them could find one another and mesh as well as they did (professionally and personally) is a gift from God.
Welcome to RUSH. You are very welcome to the family. Legions of loyal fans. Platinum album after platinum album. Sold out shows all over the world with absolutely no mainstream radio play. There music and musicianship did all the talking and publicity fir them. Can't wait till you delve into their music even more. Geddy Lee: vocals, bass/bass pedals and keyboards. Alex Liefson: guitars Neil Peart: drums and percussion 3 ABSOLUTE LEGENDS 🤘🏻🇬🇧🖤
You’ve been blown away by what is perhaps the greatest three piece rock band to have existed. Nearly 50 years of progressive rock and all of it, uniquely their own sound. There was no one like them. It’s a long, incredible ride. Take it in and enjoy it. Rush just makes you feel good, think, and appreciate the human condition.
Holy shit, I'm so ready for you to dive down Rush's discography! They played for 40+ years and LITERALLY never made a bad song. Yes, some are better than other, but none are bad. I recommend you check these out (in order): Spirit of Radio Limelight YYZ (Live in Rio) Natural Science 2112 The Trees Cygnus X-1 (Both Books) Witch Hunt The Necromancer La Villa Strangiato Fly By Night The Fountain of Lamneth Working Man Then from there, you have hundreds to go through. Make sure to read the lyrics. They are so deep and thought-provoking. I'm sure everyone will tell you about the members, but Neil Peart (the drummer) wrote all their lyrics (with a few exceptions).
Definitely go down this rabbit hole. They are a musicians band with all 3 being masters of their craft. Geddy Lee's voice is usually a like it or hate it thing, but since you like it, you really should hear more. Oh and Neil's lyrics are incredibly poetic.
This is a story of a modern day Tom Sawyer, adventurous, questioning authority, going his own way to make his mark. A warrior of truth and intelligence.
Keep in mind, this is just three dudes jammin’ like this. The level of talent of each member is truly amazing. RIP Neil, you were one of the best that ever sat behind a kit.
Hahah I was in mid comment when he said that I it stunned me for a sec. I was hearing the rattle in this one geezerz head… bahahah Oh absolutely the BEST MUSICIANS WERE ABSOLUTELY 60’s-90’s I could narrow it down but had to stretch it for the sake of some of the ones sprinkled in and out of the decade ❤
This is a Canadian band The singer bassist/keyboard synthesizer wizard is Geddy Lee we just call him Ged (hard g sound) The drummer is The Professor of drums Mr Neil Peart (pronounced peert) who was also the mastermind of words and ideas. He provided all lyrics since he joined the band after their first two records. And last but certainly not least is Alex Lifeson the guitar master. I have watched these guys live play until I thot their hands would fall off literally. Visibly swollen. These guys gave so much to us in their lifetime of music creating it’s almost beyond words. They were my first concert at age 14 and I saw their last concert tour. They actually had fun. They were goofy as hell, intelligent, all musically gifted and generally just good dudes. They said fu to the industry when they were blacklisted by radio in the US and kept going until they were finally recognized with this particular song. In the eyes of their very loyal fans (mostly men btw) their genius is unparalleled. Rush fans are like no other. It’s an acquired taste for many. Glad you enjoyed it. First hit was working man. That was without Neil. Try it out. It’s heavy rock n roll great riff from Alex. Great vocals from Ged. 🖖🏻 More suggestions would be YYZ , Red Barchetta, Subdivisions. My fav older tunes from the seventies include Lakeside Park, Fly By Night, Something For Nothing and the rock opera 2112. Fav 80s are Limelight, Closer To The Heart and 20th Century Man And there’s so much more
Neil Peart. Arguably the greatest drummer of all time. Certainly one of the most innovative... Check out: Neil Peart Drum Solo - Rush Live in Frankfurt
One of Canada's many musical treasures. I always love watching young people discover Rush. PURE talent. And Neal Peart (RIP) IS your favorite drummer's favorite drummer. The Professor. He was also the lyricist for the most part. Geddy Lee is the singer, keyboards and bass and Alex Lifeson a totally underrated guitarist. Keep heading down the Rush rabbit hole!
I’ve watched many videos of people reacting to Tom Sawyer from Rush for the first time, and here’s another one I’m watching right now. Many people watching this video for the first time don’t seem to notice that the dude with the long black hair who’s singing between conga drums with headphones on (Sir Geddy Lee) is also the same guy on keyboards, Taurus pedals (keyboards for your feet), and bass guitar. This version is taken from the actual recording session at Le Studio in Montreal; that’s why you see Ged doing these things separately… live, he does it all practically simultaneously. These three men are the pride of Canada. Edit: the drummer’s name is Cornelius Elwood Peart, better known as Neil Peart (last name sounds like “peert”). Neil wrote 99.9% of Rush’s lyrics and is widely regarded as one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. RIP Professor. The guitar player’s name is Aleksandar Živojinović, better known as Alex Lifeson. His original last name is Serbian, and translates roughly to “son of life”. He has a chord named after him, the opening chord from “Hemispheres”. It’s an F sharp major with the added 4th and flat 7. Geddy Lee was born Gary Lee Weinrib; Geddy was a nickname given to him by his friends due to his mother’s thick accent. She pronounced Gary as Geddy, and it just stuck. Welcome to Rush Land, hope to see you back again soon ✌🏻
3 musical geniuses right here! Alex, Geddy, and Neil. Alex Lifeson is the amazing guitarist. Neil Peart is the Lord of percussion. Geddy Lee plays bass guitar, synthesizer keyboards, bass synth foot pedals, and he's the singer. These guys are wizards of rock music! Thanks man! Keep crushing it!
Dear MollyBoyTV. This is my first time watching one of your reaction videos. I liked seeing your sense of wonder when you first heard Rush. I'm sure my face looked the same. As I look through what you've reacted to so far, I almost have to laugh, respectfully. I like seeing hip-hop fan react clips, but it looks from your history of videos, that you've been captured by another genre as your musical knowledge grows. Like you had lived in the house of hip-hop for your entire life, then wanting to explore the world outside your house, and settling in your neighbors flat to dig in to all of their metal albums. I think you're doing good work here. Keep it up. I'm really glad to see you may have gotten into prog rock. I agree you need more Rush. A good transition for you here would be YYZed for starters. Instrumental only, but lyrical at the same time in the melodic themes. Progressive rock is where metal meets classical. It will blow your mind, sonically. I'm currently too poor to pledge, but I hope my words will persuade you. -M
The people that told you no, don’t listen to rush are nuts! Rush is one of the very best progressive rock bands of the late 70s and early 80s they were a band that set the president for bands like tool, Alice In Chains, and a number of others. People just don’t realize how much of an impact rush actually had on music as a hole.. this band showed everyone that heard them but you don’t necessarily have to have a song that is in 4/4 and structured in a certain way. And at the time when their music was around, they’re just wasn’t too many bands that attempted things like that. Genres like jazz, fusion and others that messed with different times signatures just we’re not listened to until rush came along Rush basically brought an entire new way of thinking in to the mainstream. And Tom Sawyer is a great song to get started with this band although it is one of their most played songs. It is that way for a reason as you have just heard. Because it throws some curveballs at you that you totally don’t expect and that is the thing that rush is most known for so I am 100% on board and I don’t know if everyone else is here but this is totally a rabbit hole you should take the space elevator down into.
I have to say this….i was watching your reactions and I was all smiles. Seeing the look of dazed bewilderment on your face, trying to take it all in, figuring it all out. Geddy Lee is the bassist, vocalist and synthesist, and yeah his voice is unique as hell. Neil Peart is the drummer. And yeah his drumming on this song is just mind boggling. His precision, energy and complexity is just jaw dropping. Alex Lifeson on guitars. He is known for coming up with bizarre ass chords and some truly wicked soloing. The impression you’re left with is “how can so much sound come out of just 3 people?” They were all serious technical masters of their craft, and they were only 27, 28 years old when they first recorded Tom Sawyer. It was the first song off their Moving Pictures album released in early 1981, but recorded/produced in 1980. So you were really close as to WHEN this song came out. It makes me so happy you enjoyed this. It means a lot.
The relevance is this: The character, as introduced in the novel, is very much a smart, precocious kid who constantly rebels against his much put-upon Aunt Polly and his much more conformist half-brother, Sid. Sawyer's creative mind makes him the leader of a group of boys in his town who all run around together, pull light-hearted pranks, ditch school and constantly get into small amounts of trouble because they won't behave "properly." The key thing to know, though, is that the novel -- ostensibly written for children -- has as its setting a town in 1840s Missouri. In other words, the social norms with which Sawyer can never seem to conform are those of the slave-holding Antebellum South of the United States, about 15 years before the outbreak of this country's devastating Civil War. As such, this "children's story" is rife with Twain's scathing, hilariously satirical commentary about the hypocrisy of those social norms. So, listen to this song again and follow the lyrics while keeping in mind that literary context. 😁
@@thomashiggins9320 Your synopsis is one of the most accurate, concise comments on Tom Sawyer that I've ever seen. Well said!!! You are correct in that Clemens aka Mark Twain was one of the pre-eminent satirists and humorists of his time.
GREAT reaction MollyBoy! It's never, ever too late to dive into Rush!! Be prepared to be blown away, jaw on the floor, gobsmacked at the intricate, progressive, heavy rock you are about to witness with this band! 3 unassuming gents from Toronto, Canada (drummer Neil is from St. Catharines). Geddy Lee on bass, keys & vocals, Alex Lifeson on guitar, and your favourite drummer's favourite drummer, Neil Peart, The Professor, on all things percussion! Your in for a journey my friend! For a smattering of what's next: Working Man (live in Cleveland), Xanadu (live in Montreal), Subdivisions (music video is good), YYZ (live in Rio - instrumental), 2112 (once you get your feet wet - there is a graphic novel video - because the lyrics are VERY important with this band). Oh yes, we're ready for this! Cheers!
It's 1981, dude ... Tom Sawyer is the name of a character in author Mark Twain's books back in the late 1800's. Rush used the name to espouse the characteristics of a modern day individualist. Geddy Lee = bass, keys, vocals / Alex Lifeson = guitars / Neil Peart (pronounced Peert) = drums, percussion There's only 3, yet their power is IMMENSE !!! Next up - the song Xanadu LIVE FROM EXIT...STAGE LEFT - DO IT! LOVED this reaction ... welcome to the world of RUSH 🇨🇦🎶🎤🎸🎹🥁
I was surprisingly introduced to this song decades ago, when I was at a place and around people that were culturally very different, otherwise I probably never would’ve been exposed. After all these years, I still get the same reaction from hearing Tom Sawyer. I still listen to the “album” to this day, but until watching this content, I never realized. That I’ve never seen these guys on video. We all know and have our compliments for all the musicians because they’re fantastic. But what I’ve become to appreciate most is the songwriting. The lyrics to ALL the Rush music is absolutely phenomenal!
I was born in Canada 1966 and grew up with Rush in some respect. I probably enjoyed it the most as you played it. How exceptional they were and how well it comes together
These are, in my opinion, the greatest three musicians as a group in the world. Neil is without question the greatest drummer to ever live. They work together so beautifully. I don't care how much the song is overplayed it's a piece of my childhood and I love it.
You mentioned that this song gave you goosebumps. The funny thing is that I have listened to it hundreds of times and regularly get goosebumps when I do (including this time). Such an iconic, inimitable song!
It’s all been said already. The best rock drummer of all time. Lyric writer for the band. And an amazing soul. Neil Peart. His passing was one of the saddest in rock history. Having seen Rush live twice (wish it could’ve been more) in Detroit, they are all they seem in the studio while live. Imagine Geddy Lee playing the synthesizer live with his feet while he’s playing bass and singing at the same time. Unbelievable trio. And because of the incredible talents of Neil and Geddy, Frankly their guitarist, Alex Lifeson, really didn’t get the credit he fully deserved. If he was in any other band he would have been a total stand out. But he fits perfectly in the pocket in RUSH holding more than his own while allowing the trio to be a tripartite tour de force.
I respectfully disagree...John Bonham is hands down the best drummer that has walked this Earth. His drum solos are legendary with Moby Dick probably his most famous. However, Neil Peart is top 5 for sure...
Bro, you have just stumbled on to the musician's favorite musicians, that they will never admit to loving. That drummer is is Neal Peart. He is highly regarded as the GOAT on the drums. He set the standard. You're gonna Love going down the Rush rabbit hole. Have Fun! We'll be watching!

They did their fair share of pot and coke, but NEVER before a show. Showtime was , they were professionals.

You need to read Geddys book if you think these guys didn’t do drugs or drinks, they were heavy into it in the 70s and 80s even in the 90s too.
@@marysampietro2359 Respect for acknowledging a mistake. That's all too rare a quality.
RIP Neil❤

THREE OF THE GREATEST MUSICIANS EVER!
And don’t forget he plays the keyboards with his feet at the same time as the bass!
I used to play drums, and all of the accolades about Peart are true, but Geddy's bass playing is world-class, and Alex can play the hell out of a guitar. How the three of them could find one another and mesh as well as they did (professionally and personally) is a gift from God.
Alex is probably in the top ten all time. Just did get the recognition because of the extreme talent of Neil and Geddy.
It's so cool seeing a new generation getting introduced to Rush. Truly one of the greatest bands of all time. Unbelievable talents.
Insane sound! Get ready to be shocked! Neil is one of the best (if not the best) rock drummer of all time! Truly sensational!

This is a Canadian band
The singer bassist/keyboard synthesizer wizard is Geddy Lee we just call him Ged (hard g sound)
The drummer is The Professor of drums Mr Neil Peart (pronounced peert) who was also the mastermind of words and ideas.

Neil Peart. Arguably the greatest drummer of all time. Certainly one of the most innovative... Check out: Neil Peart Drum Solo - Rush Live in Frankfurt
The argument against is, of course, that he doesn't qualify as a drummer. Instead, he is a percussionist.

Geddy Lee - Vocals, bass guitar, keyboard
Alex Lifeson - Lead guitar
Neal Peart - Drums, all things percussion
One of the greatest rock songs by one of the greatest rock bands ever. Mesmerizing.
I wish more people knew about Triumph too.
3 musical geniuses right here! Alex, Geddy, and Neil.
Alex Lifeson is the amazing guitarist.
Neil Peart is the Lord of percussion.

Am Canadian so seen Rush many times as well as some of the best rock bands ever- Rush is literally the best pure rock band ever.
I would highly recommend starting a RUSH day. They are often described as your favorite band's favorite band. They have 40 years of amazing music.
That's a severely hot take. There are way more bands that influenced a lot more people than this overrated one. On every level.
I would say, in addition, that they were the best prog band through 2015. And I don't know who you'd name now that could possibly claim the title.

The impression you’re left with is “how can so much sound come out of just 3 people?”
They were all serious technical masters of their craft, and they were only 27, 28 years old when they first recorded Tom Sawyer.
It was the first song off their Moving Pictures album released in early 1981, but recorded/produced in 1980. So you were really close as to WHEN this song came out.
It makes me so happy you enjoyed this. It means a lot.
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is an 1876 novel by Mark Twain. I studied it for my O level English in the 80's.
The relevance is this:
The character, as introduced in the novel, is very much a smart, precocious kid who constantly rebels against his much put-upon Aunt Polly and his much more conformist half-brother, Sid.
Sawyer's creative mind makes him the leader of a group of boys in his town who all run around together, pull light-hearted pranks, ditch school and constantly get into small amounts of trouble because they won't behave "properly."
The key thing to know, though, is that the novel -- ostensibly written for children -- has as its setting a town in 1840s Missouri.

These are, in my opinion, the greatest three musicians as a group in the world. Neil is without question the greatest drummer to ever live. They work together so beautifully. I don't care how much the song is overplayed it's a piece of my childhood and I love it.
These guys are on the same level with Led Zeppelin for me. Each person is a master at their craft. How they got together must be a small miracle!!
