One of the best Albums ever written. They were all breaking up, cheating taking way to many drugs and destroying themselves and each other all while writing this album. The pain, love and despair of them all runs right through thus whole album.
The chain was the only thing keeping the group together.
It’s crazy how good this album turned out to be with all that gut wrenching drama

I was about 15 when this came out and still remember all of the lyrics to the entire album but I couldn’t tell you what I did yesterday 😂. One of the best albums of all time for me!! Amazing band!!

Best. Breakup. Song. Ever. The live version, with Stevie and Lindsay staring daggers at each other and spinning incredible riffs as they fling their venom is an all-time classic.
This was the only song on the album with a song credit to all the band members. Pure gold!
This song was actually about not breaking up the band. The band is the chain.

Lindsey Buckingham has an amazingly strong, clear and expressive voice as well as being a fabulous guitarist. They had four or 5 of the best albums ever and you gotta immerse yourselves in them for hours.
All their relationships were falling apart when they made this album, but "The Chain" that holds them together is their music.
Rumours is one of the 5 greatest albums ever made critically and commercially a magnificent piece of music creativity

THE bassline to end all basslines. This rhythm section of John McVie and Mick Fleetwood were solid as individual musicians. Together they were one of the best to do it. Always perfection in the pocket
I have told people you could play the first 3 or 4 notes of the bass at the bridge and I would know it.
For real. It's amazing and it catches you off guard. It takes the song from this chill place to full rock. So powerful.

Lindsay Buckingham is a musical genius .... he writes and sings like no one else. This song gives me chills every time I hear it ... the chain holds them together ... whether it is a chain of gold or of iron is a matter of perspective.
Listening to Rumors is the auditory equivalent to being a peeping Tom to a band ‘s couple private break ups, adulterous behaviors and relationship disenagrations

Anyhow... Fleetwood Mac has been around since the 60s and the lineup kept changing except for 2 of the founding members... Mick Fleetwood and John McVie (McVie being the Mac in the band name).
The mainly final lineup in 1975 (When Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were recruited) was: Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and his wife Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, and Stevie Nicks.

That’s Lindsey Buckingham singing lead. He’s also ranked the 99th best guitar player of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. If you want to really see what he’s all about watch the live performance of Big Love from their concert show called The Dance. He is famous for finger-plucking instead of using a guitar pick.

The Chain represents the trouble Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were having in their relationship. "If you don't love me now, you will never love me again". Sounds like an ultimatum.
Also Christine & John. They all had input in creating this song.
I have heard Stevie say that it was about the band staying together through all of the personal struggles.

The song is made up of pieces songs the individual members had written. Lola My Love Lindsey Buckingham, Keep Me Safe by Christine McVie, a bass line John McVie used to warm up to. I can’t recall where Mick Fleetwood’s drum part came from. Stevie went home from their day of jamming and wrote the lyrics, which were a little bit angsty. The took all the great lines from her lyrics and created a less sobby song into one of the best songs in rock.

Christine was seeing Dennis Wilson, the Beach Boys' drummer. The song, You Make Loving Fun is about him.
My husband and I spent a month listening to Rumours on 8 track in the summer of 1977. It was the only tape we had that summer. We were 17🤣❤️I still know every word.

This has been one of my favorite albums since it came out
This album was massive in the late 70s and is still on Billboards top 200 chart , sitting at 33 today , about 45 years after its release. I would check out their other female singer, Christine Mc Vee, who passed away about a year ago, check her out in the song Songbird. She has a beautiful voice .
"Little Lies" was also fire.
There were three lead vocalists in this band...keep going with this LP and you will see why this LP is so great!
To me, Fleetwood Mac created their own genre of music. You can hear many influences in their work, but they wove them together into something unique and timeless.
Probably my favorite Fleetwood Mac song.

Yassss!!!! When I listen to it with my headphones on my iPad, when it gets to the build up, I put it on full blast, especially when I’m watching the live version from ‘The Dance’.
The Chain is really holding the whole band together. There was multiple breakups within the band at the time, they could have easily have been done after the first or second album with Stevie and Lindsey on it. This is their only song that credits the entire band as song writers. They each had elements of the song they were working on and put them all together for The Chain. That's why it sounds like it's different songs.
Stevie wrote the lyrics and the song is about the demise of the relationship between her and Lindsey. The reason the entire band is credited is because "The Chain" is a conglomeration of previously rejected material from the band that was literally stitched together by cutting and splicing tapes of other compositions together by the studio engineers.

But what it became was their commitment that that band was bigger than their personal differences and if they just kept holding together with the music at the center bonding them, they would be able to continue making great music. Pretty sure I heard that in an interview at some point. If not, ok.

I also read that Stevie brought the lyrics to the band and said something to the effect of "I wrote something that I think expresses how we all feel" suggesting that perhaps there was dual meaning from the beginning which was not uncommon for Stevie's lyrics.
@@keithbond9423 Nah. Stevie wrote a song called The Chain - it's a baby don't leave me song. It's on the Rumours Deluxe album. Lindsey asked for the lyrics in the chorus (If You Don't Love Me Now) . At the time Stevie said he was ripping the heart out of her song and didn't care. Later she revised her story that she gifted them all the lyrics. Lindsey wrote the verses - kind of obvious with the all the damns - Damn you love, damn your lives.
One of the best Rock and Roll songs ever written and produced in my humble opinion.

The courage and honesty to not only write this song as a group going through what they did but then go onstage and put it out there for the world to see continues to amaze me.
The Chain is their music, their shared love for music, their common incredible talents as a band. They all knew they were making great music even when their personal relationships were crashing and burning all around them. But their love for music was the chain that kept them together because they knew how incredible their music was.
You can't beat the three-part harmonies on the verses, with Lindsey Buckingham, the guitarist (is the guy) then Stevie Nicks, and Christine Mcvie (on keys) singing harmony. The song is about the band. During the recording of Rumours, Stevie and Lindsey broke up from a long relationship, and Christine McVie, divorced her husband John (the bass player) and they couldn't break the chain because they were in the middle of creating an amazing album that is one of the best-selling albums of all time. The three vocalists all wrote songs, and the most reliable hit-maker was actually Christine McVie. You should check out You Make Loving Fun which she wrote and sang off Rumours.
I hardly ever hear that song any more. It is all Stevie, Stevie, Stevie.
I always thought Christine won this album. Stevie and Lindsay could throw it back and forth at each other, but John didn't write songs, so we only got Christine's side there. 😂
Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac together. They had a love hate relationship which produced some of their best songs. Lindsey sang and played lead guitar in this one!

You need to watch the concert video from 1997 called “The Dance”. This song opens the concert and it’s phenomenal to watch their performance and musical brilliance.
The passion in that performance is breathtaking-I've never seen anything that approached it. Definitely a must-see.💜☮
I agree. You can practically see Stevie and Lindsey spitting venom at each other. So sad to see but spectacular to watch at the same time.
The version in 1982 in Malibu is even better. Lindsey singing this to Stevie, Stevie screaming back, and it's like watching too people rip each other's heart out on stage.

that's a great performance, but I prefer the 1982 live version. A lot more passion (hurt, bitterness, anger, etc.) in the delivery imho.
This song in England is synonymous with the BBC's motor racing coverage, my mind is automatically catapulted straight back to Murray Walker and the 70s/80s!
'Rumours' is definitely my desert island choice, never get bored with hearing it. My favourite song is "Go your own way" - the lifespan of a whole relationship rolled up in one song - perfectly bittersweet.
One of the best albums EVER! All the songs are good, most of them are great. The dynamics of this band will never be recreated. All the emotions they all were experiencing were thrown out there and crafted in to music gold
I play that little bass riff all the time at church in the morning before rehearsal when I am just warming up. Since the rest of the worship team is all under 30, none of them have any idea who Fleetwood Mac is.

This is one of my all-time favorites. I love that there is an undercurrent of danger, the song gets quiet and then breaks into a controlled chaos that comes off almost like begging, a prayer, and hope all in one.
Black Pegasus is like "there isn't a Fleetwood Mac reaction that I haven't enjoyed." I'm like "just you wait BP, there will be a lot more."

One of the few bands that sounds as good, if not BETTER live. The live version of this song is incredible for the interplay of emotions of the band as they’re playing.

I remember seeing a live video of this. The looks they were giving each other were priceless. You could feel the tension. Good thing looks can't actually kill.
Despite their relationships breaking up, this was a Grammy Award winner and most successful album. And kept together anyway and put more albums. Crazy stuff

Originally "Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac" naturally with Mick Fleetwood and John McVie but with 3 guitarists: Danny Kirwan, Jeremy Spencer, and The Legend that was one of the greatest Blues guitarists in the World: Peter Green. Peter lost it by' taking acid. Danny became a drunk and Jeremy joined a Cult in THe USA so Fleetwood Mac re-invented themselves with a transatlantic line up which we all know.
I've always found Stevie's voice to be annoying on its own, but when she and Lindsay harmonize... ~chef's kiss~

The bass solo and build was used for the Formula 1 opening music in the UK, an iconic sound that i'm sure will bring back the memories of many Brits, you can almost hear Murray Walker in the mix!

The Rumors albulm is the first music I ever remember hearing in my life. I was born in 84 and my mom was a huge Fleetwood Mac fan. I finally got to take my mom to see them when they toured a few years ago. Worth every penny and something neither of us will ever forget.
Not a male; that was Christine McVie who was the keyboard player and a brilliant songwriter and singer in her own right.
RIP Songbird.

That ending bass and guitar change up always reminds me of The Cure.
I had Fleetwood Mac Rumours on 8-Track if anyone remembers those. I played that tape many, many times. This song puts me in that time in that car. All of Rumours is great and you can listen to all of it with fast forwarding. Such a great band with so much going on in the undercurrents between the members it's a wonder they made it at all. Sometimes I wish I was Black Pegasus hearing these tunes for the first time today.
This is the song you need to see live, the actual venom coming from them as they stare daggers across the stage...amazing performance.
This album is one of the best of all times. Saw them live in LA twice in the early 80s. They sound even better live. Such a strong performance.
The Chain is my MOST favorite FM song. Just LOVE EVERYTHING about it! I've read that it was put together from a few song fragments that they connected up together. That's why every band member is listed in the writing credits. The last part from the "dirty" break onward just makes me ecstatic!❤❤❤😊😊
Lindsay Buckingham is an incredible guitar player and vocalist. The live versions of "Big Love" and "I'm So Afraid" from The Dance reunion show in 1997 are unbelievable

I can name plenty of my father's favorite bands. He loved Fleetwood Mac and especially Stevie Nicks. She can't only sing but a very beautiful woman.
This is also one of my moms favorite bands too. And she's not as much as a music person as my dad and myself. Music is my personal therapy. So deep connection with most songs.

One of my top albums as a teen! I am 61 years old and I just love their music still. Just went to see Stevie Nicks and Billy Joel at US Bank Stadium recently. Great concert! They both still can bring it! I wish Fleetwood Mac was still around. 🙂

The story behind the Rumours album is crazy.
They are all in the middle of break ups, the songs are about those break ups and the emotion on the akbum, and even moreso concert is palpable
This year my 14 year old played this song for me and I was hooked. I had heard a lot of Fleetwood Mac's 80s music but not this early song. I love the instrumental break the best. It's funky. Fleetwood Mac was soooo awesome and I'm glad that the young people of today, especially my son, are embracing their music. I also really love the lesser known, "I Don't Wanna Know" from the Rumors album. Love from the Bahamas
I hear this song as a woman/man who is speaking to their spouse during a divorce/break up. They are saying I can still hear you saying you would never break the chain, the chain being the promise to each other to always stay together, but there's no love being felt. At the end they say over and over, "chain.. keep us together ".

I've heard this track countless times and not once did I associate it with 'chain gang' but now that you brought it up, I can't unhear it. Brilliant addition BP.
Highly recommended watching the live versions of these songs after the studio, especially the older ones from 70’s/80’s. Not only does it show off the talent the musicians but a lot of the time the live version offers a unique nuance to a song based on how that artist is feeling on that particular day, and it makes it feel more powerful.

I saw them live just after this album was released at the Philly Spectrum in '77. The headliner was Loggins and Messina. The Amazing Rhythm Aces started the show and Fleetwood mac was the opener for Loggins and Messina. They blew the roof the place! Two standing ovations and encores.
