My dad was tasked w/ the mission of fixing all the problems w/ the F-8 (both electrical and mechanical) and the A-7 was the result, He was Chief Engineer on this project and was given other Engineers from the Air Force and Navy to help. This was in D.C. and we moved from Arlington, VA. to Arlington, TX in '67. He was the Air Force Liaison officer in charge of construction and worked at the LTV plant in Dallas untill 72 when he was deployed as Asst. Base CMDR. in charge of the A-7 Fighter Wing Div. in Udontani (Udorne) Thailand (spelling ??) during Viet Nam Conflict. Alot of good memories from then including Sat. night races at Devils Bowl Speedway, Cowboys playing home games at the Cotton Bowl Stadium (Don Meridith QB) and lastly Rangers becoming a TX. Baseball team after leaving Washington (Generals) and the parking lot was Huge to accommodate Rangers Stadium, Six Flags and Seven Seas. I too have a Model of the A-7 "D" built at Dallas LTV and a framed picture with signatures from all who were involved including Jim Vought V.P. ( no relation to Vought Aeronautics of LTV). We (USA) manufactured and sold these planes until 2001 co-incidentally the year my father passed.
Still sad to see the Corsair II out of service. I've always loved that plane! Looks great, purposeful. I personally love the lines, just like the F-8 Crusader. The A-7 is one of my favorite jets of all time. Greece, since you retired this awesome bird, I'd be willing to take one of your hands.....if only I could afford to operate her!

Old but lethal war-birds. Back in 1972 on board the Kitty Hawk (CVA-63) I watched the Dam Busters and Golden Dragons fly sorties into Vietnam their bomb load was incredible. One day I watched the Asst. Flight-deck Officer get sucked into the intake of one still a memory hard to forget.

Round the world cruise of the USS Enterprise (CVn-65) for a home port change from Alameda, CA to Norfolk, VA. 2. Final cruise of my squadron and the sister squadron of the A-7E….transitioned as all remaining USN A-7 units to the F/A-18C….fresh off the factory floor from St. Louis.
Great aircraft but for the most part uni tasked. Primary Attack and Air-Ground. Yes it has a Sidewinder on the fuselage station as a defensive salon but still not as nimble as the F-8 or F/A-18 which replaced the A-7. I was ordnance on that and maintenance was a PITA. Bomb racks were heavy and for me I could slide under have someone release the bolts and carry it on my shoulder. The Gun was even worse, took a crew of about five to remove and reinstall and usually two to do the cleaning….Did I mention that most maintenance items were calendar driven so every 42 days the gun came apart for corrosion inspection. US Navy standards even to this day are every 14 days every aircraft gets a way whether it needs it or not. At sea it goes to every seven days. Man eater intake.

Painting a jet is really expensive. Tens of thousands of dollars. You don't just get some paint at the hardware store and some guys with sprayers to slap a coat on. Greece is not flush with cash, and why bother painting you old, obsolete jets which you hope to replace as soon as you can possibly afford more F-16s? You could almost buy an F-16 for what it would cost to paint the fleet of A-7s. And why? So they'll look pretty? Paint doesn't effect performance at all. Best it can do is protect form corrosion, and that hardly matters on a plane nearing the end of its service life. Although one of them is in good nick.
And that's a passenger. Even if it wasn't, it's Greece's own business what amount of facial hair their military personnel are allowed to have. Not everyone follows western standards.
Is that actually just old USAF SEA camo with HAF roundels painted over it? Or is that a HAF paint scheme? The new painted ones are different, but the old, faded ones look a lot like USAF jets.
all three of them are HAF camo. THe freshly painted ones look like this because the retard drawing the paint scheme failed to realize why it was as it was. Anyway, this video was close to their retirement year of 2014. 10 years ago....
