Its just like Michaelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel, its a work of art Damien Martyn's technique, some of the best shots you'll ever see off front and back foot. Magnificent batsman to watch in full flight.
The epitome of poise, grace and timing. In terms of pure aesthetics and ease, I can't think of any better in my lifetime. As a West Indian, I enjoyed watching him, Hooper, Mark Waugh and Mohammad Yousuf bat for this reason.
My favourite batsman of all time right here. Patience, timing, footwork, balance and power when he needed it. He didn't always get the runs he should have, but when Australia collapsed early and were 2 or 3 down for less than 20, usually overseas, he dug them out of the mire making batting look easy. His centuries in Sri Lanka are my favourite.
Absolutely oozed class every single time he graced the pitch. Shame the current generation of bash and crash batters lack this kind of sheer elegance. Just listening to the commentators in total awe of his artistry is like poetry.
When batting looked beautiful. Top comment yours 👌👍 S Tendulkar Y Singh M Waugh D Martyn I Bell M Atapattu H Gibbs J Kallis A Flower B Lara S Anwar M Yousuf N Astle S Fleming Aravinda S Jayasuriya All classy & stylish batsmen !!
This guy was a fantastic batsman. So smooth, fluent and fluid in his batting. So effortless. Playing a forward defense for four? Unbelievable. The best timer of the cricket ball in history. I was never a fan but you have to give credit where it's due. I would pay good money to watch this guy batting. Respect
Damien Martyn found it difficult in finding a spot in the Australian batting line up. Such was their batting unit's prowess. Had Martyn played for a different country, he would have gone on to score plenty of runs. He makes batting look so easy.
Watched this probably 100 times.. We all speak about Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Yousuf Youhana, Inzamam Ul Haq, Kumar Sangakkara, Mark Waugh as great timers of cricket ball, but this guy is criminally underratted. I would like to mention 01. Those drives, half pulls off Ntini, Kallis, Pollock, Nel. 02. Those two defensive pushes against Vaas 03. Lofted cover drive off Azhar Mahmood 04. Those cuts ans drives off Simon Doull, Daniel Vettori and Chris Cairns. It was like watching a river flowing gorgeously through all the obstacles. He is one player i would probably pay and watch. Gorgeous on off side, straight as well as leg side. "Marto" was one of his kind and there would never be another like him.
With all the superstars in the Aussie team. I think DM flew under the radar. His record is respectable as well. This video is just a pleasure to watch.
I wonder why I still remember this cricketer aftr more than a decade f his retiremnt ; particularly when his career was not that long, often overshadowed by d legends of d game playing with him in his own team !! Now I realise what he was !! He was not as destructive as Hayden, Ponting or Gilchrist but it was his style and effortlessness dat gave him a permanent place in cricket lovers mind !! I think Mark Waugh and Herschell Gibbs were similar to him regarding class and elegance but Damien was more sexier and more soothing to my eyes !!
The Batsman that Test Batsmen pay money to watch. Absolutely gorgeous to watch. I will never tire of watching this video. Tx for compiling these shots.

Him and M Waugh, Australias most beautiful batsmen
Damien Martyn was a real life batting text book, compact, elegant technique, great player... Loved watching him bat, if only he was a left hand batter like me ahahah!! Great technique 👍
Is there, has there been, will there be, a better classier batsman than Marto , i think not , all coaches out there , all the Dads out there , do not listen to any advice onj how to bat , just watch this and replicate his style and you will have the most elegant style ever developed.
If you're that Allan Donald aka White lightning my respect for you as a person now equals your bowling. And I agree, he turned batting into a form of dance. When sport meets art there you'll find the "mart".
Would have to be from a genuine non cricket lover. There's no way you couldn't atleast appreciate the man. Still averaged 46 upon retirement. He was a class above most. Excellent in the shorter form, and if t20 was around, when he was there, you'd have to pick him on class for a start. That's what classy batsmen do. He'd have been successful. He was in the one dayers, so he'd have found a way.
Pure Class. In that era Australia was blessed with top order bats that would make any nations top order at anytime in history. Beautiful off side player. Effortless.
6:24 is arguably the best shot of all time in my opinion. Look at it just look. Look how FAST that ball travels over the line, look how little effort he put in making it happen.
The thing here with these shots is that they are not any express pace deliveries, most of them are in between 125-130 kmph and that shows how good a timer of cricket ball he is.
@Lats Niebling Tendulkar played only the last two tests returning after a major tennis elbow injury I reckon. Ponting also played the last test only and secondly Ponting was a pathetic batsman in Indian conditions in test cricket. Martyn was the best player of spin in that side
@Lats Niebling Wow great story!!! Smith is from Sydney as well if I'm not wrong? And Smith's century in Pune back in 2017 just proved why he's such a great player of spin.
Best cover drives in cricket (personal choice) - also guys who predominantly scored in the offside Damien Martyn David Gower Michael Vaughan Jacques Kallis Mohammad Yousuf
The only batsman that iv'e ever seen that times the ball better than Mark Waugh, in saying that there obviously better players around at the time, Lara, ponting, Tendulkar etc, but for pure timing and effortless strokeplay there were few better imo.
The back foot square drive @ 2:26 is the rarest shot in cricket, very few could play it, much less play it with that amount of power & timing. As the bowler, you'd be saying to yourself, 'where can I bowl to this man?'
Combination of technical elegance and flair. Damien Martyn was more graceful than Ricky Ponting. Like mark waugh, marvelous timer who's average does not convey his greatness. Genius of a batsman Martyn was.
Martyn, Mark Waugh and VVS were pure joy to watch. Just effortless timing
STJ _ the second game had Mark Waugh at the non strikers end. That would have been beautiful to watch.
@STJ, indeed, I would add Mohammad Azharuddin to the list as well, despite all that has happened.
And David Gower.
Please stop lying to the world

Those silken back-foot punches are stuff of orgasm. Even his front-foot defensive shots carried for a boundary. Absolutely magical.
Lol you need a girlfriend so you can have a proper orgasm bro. Orgasming over martyn is unhealthy
Did you have a hand relief over that?
Orgasm😂
Climax at 9:27.

Imagine a partnership between Martyn and Sangakarra both doing cover drives lol.
Lol Yousuf nowhere near as classy as those
Totally agree, NEVER seen anyone with better balance/stillness at the crease, or more boundaries from apparently gentle pushes through the off side 😌
@@ruchirmundhra6716Yusuf was very underrated
Hooper and Waugh should have been much better. Great talents that didn't quite get there.

A guy who never needed power to get the ball over the fence! I have seen very few batsmen who time the ball as elegant as Martyn did.

Kim Hughes comes to mind for technical correctness but like Marto did not have the mental toughness
Sangakarra, AB D. Both have just as classy cover drives.
Majestic glorious elegant all these adjectives are for Damian martin
Well that back foot punch of ntini. So much timing placement and elegance
My new favourite clip! Beautiful to watch.

this man is not human. this sort of timing, elegance is godly.

The thing here with these shots is that they are not any express pace deliveries, most of them are in between 125-130 kmph and that shows how good a timer of cricket ball he is.

Because of martin Australia won test series in India
@Lats Niebling Tendulkar played only the last two tests returning after a major tennis elbow injury I reckon. Ponting also played the last test only and secondly Ponting was a pathetic batsman in Indian conditions in test cricket. Martyn was the best player of spin in that side

@Lats Niebling Yes absolutely. He always preferred playing in the subcontinent than in Australia as said by Ponting in his autobiography
What really proves how special he was, is how he was able to play the same shot 6 times in a row without any difference at the end
What a classy batsman. His technique is very easy on the eye.

The speed off the bat is something else.
There is nothing better on the eye than a Damien Martin back foot square drive.
Damien Martyn is the 2nd most elegant Australian batsman ever after M Waugh. These two are one of a very few Aussies who batted with elegance.
Mark Waugh, Carl Hooper and Damien Martin were the best swift-timer, cricket fraternity ever seen
*Damien Martyn and VVS Laxman, these two are the most elegant stylish and greatest timer of the ball*
