Prior to this innings in early 2001 (the first year of the 21st century in actual fact), very few batsmen had passed 150 in a one day innings. The australian record at this point was 145 held jointly by Dean Jones (1990-91) and Ricky Ponting (early 1998). Three years after this, Gilchrist made 172 against India, 3 years after that Matthew Hayden got 181 against New Zealand and the current record by Shane Watson of 185 not out was achieved about 4-5 years after that. In around all this, Ponting, Andrew Symonds, Steve Smith and David Warner, among others for Australia have all gone well past 150 on several occasions each. And this is just one country, not to mention other country's batsmen. Not denigrating the class of such batsmen, but one would have to conclude that batting in one day cricket has been considerably easier post year 2000.

The best ever slip fielder, more than a useful off-break bowler and an outstanding opening batsman. Such a thorughly useful player for any team. Australia were lucky to have had a player of his class.

Mark is the most stylist.. Rohit sharma, and VVS come in the same class.. These guys hit shots with clinical precision.. Never see them make any awkward body movements.. No slogging.. I guess elegance is attitude.. Loved watching Mark after such a long time. Thanks Criicket Australia for taking this video out of the vault.

There was a long period back then where if Mark Waugh wasn't firing, Australia lost, simple as that. Legend of Australian Cricket.

I came here to watch and listen the gem of the commentaries by Mr. Lawry, Mr. Greig and Mr. Beanaud after listening to the shouting match (a disgrace to the sports commentary) of today’s Aus vs WI (02/04/24). Thank you for the memories and Mark’s graceful play.😊

There were a few years there where Mark Waugh was the best ODI opener in the world in my opinion.
It was so good having his balance of relaxed but very aggressive opening in that period.
He alway made you feel good seeing him come out to bat.

8 balls from carrying his bat through the entire innings & score half the team's total - a good day's work.

Mark Waugh is a bit of an enigmatic figure as his career charts show. He started off as a brilliant test batsman and an absolutely majestic player of high quality fast bowling, his stats in West Indies against Ambrose and Walsh & in South Africa prove it. Then transformed himself into an excellent player of spin bowling. But as his career progressed, he became a full-fledged ODI specialist with declining test form. Still retired with great figures though, no doubts about his being an ATG in limited overs cricket.

Mark Waugh was one the most elegant batsman ever. Superb at slips. It's crazy how ppl forgot how good both Waugh brothers were. Steve Waugh is undisputedly the best cricket captain since may be Clive loyd and border.
