      @goldman1195 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @CanadianTShirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@rowanbean3757 The dividend yield is always based on the current market price so the dividend yield fluctuates every minute. Don't worry about the dividend yield, the dividend per share (a dollar amount) is what you really care about. That is how much money you will receive in cash for every share that you own, and this does NOT depend on the price of the share. This value is usually fixed for at least a year, until the company decides to increase or decrease it

      Check out my video on Investing with your TFSA:
      th-cam.com/video/i_bWf1NyUbE/w-d-xo.html
      That's the same strategy I use: US stocks in RRSP and Canadian dividends in TFSA but you should also place extra priority on Canadian REITs in your TFSA. The reason for this is that in a non-registered account, REITs are taxed much higher than regular Canadian dividends. REITs will almost be taxed as much as regular income (the highest possible tax rate) so REITs benefit the MOST inside a TFSA. I'll be making a whole video on REITs soon so stay tuned for that =)

      @CanadianTShirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The first step is always scary... but remember, the most important thing is to not give into your emotions and fear and panic. If you believe in the company's future, then ignore the short term fluctuations. Hold onto the stock for the long term. And remember you do NOT have to jump in with all of your money at once! Maybe just start with $1000 or so and then next week put some more money in. It is much safer and less stressful to spread out your investment over a period of time. Happy investing! =)

However is their a a risk in having only stocks in Canada and US? I don't believe their would be such a disruption in which that would be the case but should I even bother with international stocks If I hold diversified dividend ETF's in Canada and US as well as solid dividend companies in both? Quick question: How did you come up with 28% payout ratio for Allied? D/NI? AP.UN's payout ratios are between 70% (NFFO) to 84% (AFFO). If you are using D/NI, other REITs are much more attractive than AP.UN.
    And here are also my thoughts:
    - REITs: If you are investing in REITs, instead of investing in only one REIT, you may as well get VRE for a basket of REITs to diversify the portfolio with higher distribution rate.
    - Financials: Considering where the economy is heading, we should consider the potential increasing default rate in 2020 & 2021. It may seem attractive right now, but it may be better to wait until after Q2 release to see banks' bad debt reserves.
    - Util/Comm: These categories are probably more stable at the moment, but util is a better bet because part of telecom's revenue is from subscriptions and live events (vs necessity's guarantee). With everything shuttered, their revenues are impacted.

    If you buy these Canadian stocks on the NYSE, your dividend payouts will be in US dollars as well, and despite the conversion fees to purchase them initially, its likely that the USD-CAD movement in the future will actually benefit your profits.

      I don't like gambling with foreign exchange rates, they can be incredibly volatile. Sure you "can" earn some extra money if the rate moves in your favour but you are guaranteed to pay around 2.5% in currency conversion fees. I would rather keep my Canadian investments in CAD and US investments in USD

      It is always better to diversify your investment rather than put all of your eggs in one basket just to reach that DRIP value faster! I get the temptation, you want to reach that DRIP as soon as possible but what happens if that stock suspends their dividend? Then you are left with no passive income! It's much safer, especially for beginners to spread out their investment over multiple stocks. Sure it will take longer to reach DRIPs with all of them but it's not a race, you don't have to reach a DRIP all at once. You can do it step by step over the course of months =)

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The dividend amount is usually constant for a year. Usually at the end of the year, they will decide whether they will increase or decrease the dividend. That was the old school method of banking and investing when investors would hold stock certificates and then the companies would send them a cheque! It's amazing to see how far we have come! Also regarding Allied, remember don't focus too much on the short term performance. Yes Allied is DEFINITELY hurting which is why they are trading at such a discount but these properties will still be in a huge demand once offices reopen. They currently have a payout ratio in the 70s which is still quite normal for a telecom company. Sure I would prefer a lower payout ratio but as long as it's below 85%, I'm comfortable. Also another thing to consider is that Telus has long term contracts with millions of companies and consumers and that is guaranteed revenue for years to come so I don't see them killing their dividend streak anytime soon
